Chapter One - Mobile Prophecies

The glow of Ezra's mobile lights up the wall near his bed. News highlights from his RSS feeds stream across the screen.

quote:
"...21 Degrees on Friday, and 24 Degrees on Saturday. In sports, Devan Dubnyk is playing as though he plans to keep his starting spot for a while.

Dubnyk made 31 saves and the Oilers beat the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 on Tuesday night, giving Edmonton two wins in three straight games with Dubnyk in goal.

We all remember it: March 3, 2013, the NDP Party led by Brian Mason won a majority government, proving that change was not only needed, but coming. Now, the NDP Minister of National Defence Peter MacKay along side United States Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta have officially petitioned the UN to append the Geneva Convention to make the War on Terror more successful and less costly. The proposed changes are said to promise a 40% decrease in the expected time required to completely remove or otherwise pacify all foreign threats.

In other news, the Obama administration has nearly finished assembling the new PEDA. The planned committee, now 12 months in the making, will be in charge of assessing other countries, cultures and peoples for their 'Ethical and Moral values in regards to all things'. It is hoped that this committee will better identify threats to Americans way of life and increase the standard of living everywhere..."

Ezra opened his eyes and sat up, stretching a bit. He glanced at his RSS feed, dismissing it. He felt fresh and awake this morning. He switched his phone over to music, Aphex Twin, and hopped out of bed to do some more serious stretches -- twisting and bending to Fingerbib. After he felt loose and mostly awake, he headed to the shower. Most of his best thinking went on there and he mused about new ideas to talk to the guys about. After he showered he got dressed and drank a high protein smoothie and ate whole wheat toast.

Feeling more ready to handle the day, Ez grabbed his shoulder bag and locked up. He headed down the street towards the public transit, glancing at the headlines on the rows of papers and magazines at the new-stand. He noticed they have a copy of an indie Japanese tech magazine he really likes, so he grabbed it and left a few bills on the counter as he went by. Right outside the entrance to his stop is a little coffee cart he likes. He gets a mocha before he heads to wait. When he boards, he finds a seat and flips through the magazine, looking for inspiration. The last few issues had been heavily centered on robotics, but remote control and wireless data are always popular topics that are relevant to him. The ride passes quickly this way and soon he is at his destination.

The place he was meeting his partner was a non-descript building a block from the stop. It seems he found a potential client, an Etherite, who feel in love witht he base features of the design, but wanted to work with us to create a phone that he could modify to work with current and future projects of his own. Ezra really liked the possibilities. Modular, self-customizable products was an exciting design space.

Ezra's business partner, cabal mate and spiritual brother, Tome, waited outside. "What's up, my man? You ready to do some deals?" He puts out his hand for five. Ezra slaps it and smiles, "Always. I feel like this project wants to live and people are drawn to it." Tome chuckles, "You're talking a little like Frankenstein here... which might be good, given that Dr. Neon inside is a mad scientist type. Seriously though, Ez, his designs are solid, really cutting edge stuff. If we like what we see, we may want to take him on as our R&D." Ezra nods, "I like that idea."

They both head into the lab.

Just through door of the lab was an array of complex security devices when scanned and identified the two as guests. A little hovering ball with a soft, pulsing violet light said in a pleasant voice, "This way to the lab. This way to the lab." The men followed it down a short hall into automatic doors which opened with a hydralic whoosh.

Inside was a hazy lab with neon light dotted througout, some blinking and some constant, in a broad variety of colors. Machines and computers hum and buzz. A figure in a stylized labcoat and strange goggles woorks with fine on tools on something on a lab table. As they get closer, Ezra sees that it is a leyLine phone.

Dr. Neon tuns around, "Gentleman, so glad you're here. I have to say, you've outdone yourself on the phone. It meets all of my needs, advanced as they be. I didn't expect it would." Ez chuckles, "Thanks for the honesty. I'm glad to hear it lived up to its reputation. I'm Ezra, and you've met Tome before?" The doc nods, "Yes, and he gave me the pitch. I had to say I was intrigued. And now, here we are. I'd love to show you some ideas I had for the phone." "That's why we're here."

The doctor nods, "Well, I have been working with the physical structure of the actual phone. Here's a simple example. Perhaps you might like to work on a tablet sized screen on occasion." The doctor places a thumb an forefinger on oppsite corners of the screen, and begins spreading it, as if you were enlarging a photo. The screen, and the entire device, smoothly expands as the doctor spreads it out. He stops when it's tablet size. "I call it fluid structure." Ezra and Tome watch, impressed by the display. "Now, here's a more complex reworking of the phone's structure. An app I call Drone." He returns the phone to normal size and opens the app menus, choosing the Drone app. He sets the phone down and it transforms with some whirring clicks into a tiny three legged robot wit a camera eye. "The drone takes simple verbal commands and follow targets, take photos and relay other types of info. Phone." At the command, the drone returns to its smartphone form. Ezra and Tome seemed to like that feature as well. "I have two more apps, this one's called Firepower." He taps the icon and the phone transforms again, this time into a sci-fi like pistol. "The usefulness of this speaks for itself." With a click the gun is back into a phone. "The last app allows the user to download codes for specific medicines and allows the phone to administer them to you."

The app opens and array of selections of medicines. After a short moment of downloading the chemical structure, the appropraite mode of entry emerges from the phone. Doc Neon chooses NO2 and a small inhaler tip springs out. He quickly breathes the gas and is pleasantly out of it for a moment. He adds, ina slightly deeper voice, "See, very handy."

The doc was brilliant. These were applications that never crossed Ezra's mind.

Ezra says, "Thank you very much for inviting us here and sharing your designs. I think there is a good future for us. Would you consider having a drink later tonight with us? I just heard of alittle place I know you'll dig. It'll give my partner and I time to work out some details."

The place was called Izzet Werkz and had a very Mad Scientist vibe with a little steampunk thrown in. The place was awesome and decked out with tremendous details, Ezra suspected it was run by an awakened, but he hadn't been there often enough to be sure. He sends the info to Doc Neon's phone.

"I'd love too. I read about that place on a board, but haven't had a chance to go."

Tome and Ez leave Doc Neon to her work and take a train to their meager headquarters. It's barely and office, tiny workshop and a modest storefront that sells their sleeper line of smartphones that rival any competetors. Tome goes right to the workshop and continues a programming project he's been working on. Ez goes through a list of possible clients and patrons he can set up meetings with. He'd like to wait until DOc Neon gets on-line, so he'll have more features to show off.

An idea comes to him... he rapidly texts Doc Neon asking for some pics and specs of the apps he just saw. He wants to get the jump on other parties, taking a gamble and showing the Doc's designs before a contract is signed. It's risky, but its ballsy too and he really wants to be a cornerstone to this emerging market... a pioneer in the field.

He takes an hour or so using what he's gotten from the Doc to make a nice looking presentation that's short, vivid and easy to navigate.  After it's done he shoots it off via email to the potential clients, particularly the larger ones, like Chantries looking to issue cabal wide phones and the like. He adds a line saying he would appreciate the chance to meet in person at their earliest convenience.

Ezra hits save and the .PPT uploads in seconds to his cloud storage. The email falls into place just as easy, following an almost perfect business format.

Sum Gui
Sum Kumpany Inc.
2632 Tarible Place

Dear Mr. Gui,

Ezra hits the send button, and then feels a mug of some sort of hot drink thrust into his hand. Ezra looks up from the keyboard and his surroundings have changed.  The person delivery the drink walks around a large table fitted with microphones and sits down. To Ezra's right another mans talks into a microphone.

"...and the person responsible for these new additions, one Mr. Ezra Stern. Who we are lucky enough to have in the studio at this very moment."

To Ezra's left is a large window looking out over the city. The whole room is dressed progressively, popular media references and memes of all sorts cover the walls and the two people present seem to match the demographic, wearing attire adorned with counter culture symbols and computer code.

"Ezra has been creating new innovations that have benefited awakened and sleeper alike for years now, but has recently made the decision to change his direction in his field, isn't that right Ezra?"

The room begins to blur a bit as the man sits staring at you waiting for an answer. The room shrinks and fades, replaced by Ezra's workshop and his computer screen showing one new email in his inbox.

Ez swallows and tries to gather his swimming senses without leaving the microphone silent for too long. He takes a deep breath and clears his throat, "Ahem... yes, of course... because what is innovation without change? Great creators leave seeds for other creative minds to shape into new forms. They do not micro-manage, lording over each idea, coldly pruning it to perfection... no... instead, great ideas are set free into the world, a dynamic free space in which the ideas are given a chance to evolve. Thus, it is my duty to leave such new ideas into the capable hands of those who can do the most with them and set my eyes on much greater horizons. For, even the technology I am now known for was once a distant destination that seemed so far away."

He blinks again, scene changing once more. he sees the new email and clicks it open to read.

As Ezra begins speaking of his duty to place in hands of those more qualified the great new ideas that come to him, the room fades back to his workshop. Finishing off his impromptu verbal manifesto for all his walls to hear.

"...into the capable hands of those who can do the most with them and set my eyes on much greater horizons. For, even the technology I am now known for was once a distant destination that seemed so far away."

"What was that Ez?" Tome yells from another room.

The email pops up on Ezra's screen...
"Ezra, it's me, 'r you I mean. It's Ezra."

Ezra's cell phone starts to ring.

"Leave the office, leave that room... actualy, give me a second."

"I'm going to call you in a couple minutes, 'r soon."

Ezra quirks a brow, "What exactly is in this coffee this morning, Tome?" He shakes his head briskly to clear it. Then the phone rings. Looking at the number, it seems the phone is calling itself. Ez answers, "Hello?" After a beat, "What? Seriously?" Click. "Tome, I know this sounds weird, but I think we have to get out of here."

Ezra's phone starts to ring again.

"Ezra? hey it's me, 'r you I mean. It's Ezra. Have I already called you?"

"Just tell him!" you hear in the background.

"Yeah, sorry. Ezra, Tome isn't who you think he is.

Or, well he is, but that isn't Tome in the next room. Trust me here man, get out'a there, and do it quietly. Don't worry, get outside; and remember, Hail Eris."

"That isn't going to work."

"Shit, yeah. Ok. I'll send a pope. Just get out'a there."

Ezra hrms, peeking into the other room and back at the phone. He nods, "Oh, yeah, ok... hrm...well... alright then." He clicks the phone off and  quietly stands. There is a back exit out that they rarely use, but there is no time like the present. He moves back there quickly, attempting to slip out.

Ezra manages to exit the building, leaving just as Tome starts asking about his plans for the next couple months.

The door latches behind him and he steps out into a back ally.

The sun shines down through the chilled air, foreshadowing a sense of hope in this confusing situation.

The back ally is accented by vehicles that haven't moved in months, garbage cans and tramp nests.

Ezra's car is parked out front, making his way down the back ally he comes out onto 112 St. The building faces the University Hospital. Directly south is Whyte Ave, a common commercial and recreational section of the city.

Address: 8409 112 St NW

Standing on the main street Ezra sees a Hot Dog vendor standing at his cart with a big grin gesturing for Ezra to come over.

The cart is out of place in late September. Fall is well established and the all ready chilly temperatures will only get colder in the remaining weeks.

Ezra rubs his eyes behind the lenses of his glasses as he steps out into the chill. It takes him a second to get his bearings, things seemed to be flowing oddly. The out of synch hot dog vendor does nothing to help this feeling. He kind of just stares at it for a moment, trying to place it. Though out of season, a 'hot' dog sounded pleasant in the cool weather. He steps up to the cart. "One please, Montreal style." It was sort of a regional favorite, coleslaw, onion, mustard, relish, and occasionally paprika.

Ezra walks up to the shivering wiener salesman and places his order.

The vendor smiles and nods enthusiastically but something about his half vacant expression tells Ezra he may not get what he was after.

After a few short moments a still shivering hand drops a hot dog into Ezra's hand, covered in brown beans and Lays All Dressed.

"There ya go man, and keep yer numbers, this one's on the emperor. Hail Aris!" he says with a warm grin.

He then walks up close to Ezra and leans in, checking first that no one was in ear shot. He slides next to the bun a long and thin silver object.

"Here ya go man; and don't worry, I won't tell anyone..." his eyes shoot back and forth as he searches in his mind for the non-existent secret "..you know, whatever your doin'."

He goes to turn to a women waiting at the cart but then turns back "oh, ya and what was that you said..  uhm, the sidewalk vents...walk, uhm, walk around them. Yeah. Have a good one man, hail eris." he turns to serve the women.

A train runs directly underground where Ezra is. It goes to the University, and many of the sidewalks on these blocks have rusting metal grates that serve to vent the tunnels below. They are considered by most as innocuous and background, just a feature of the block.

Also, the side of the Hot Dog stand says "Emperors Wieners" and has a picture of the vendor's face with a giant grin.

Ezra's car is still about a block away, just across the intersection to the south.

Ezra looks at the dog and shrugs, it still looked delicious. "Thanks... this is from the Emporer you say? Then I am honored. I hope you'll pass on my thanks." He takes a bit of the hot dog, pocketing the object for later inspection, while the man talks. He nods with great interest as he swallows, "Thanks for the tip... it's a dangerous world. This hot dog is excellent by the way." He wants to tip the guy, but he knows money is meaningless... Then he gets an idea. He digs for the small, platinum coin he kept on his person. It was his favorite metal and he felt it conducted magic excellently. He draws it out, he whispers the names of Zadkiel, the angel who watches over business owners. As he does so, he attempts to transfer a point of Quintessence into the coin as he hands it to the guy. Though he can tell it doesn't work as intended. Though, he doesn't draw the coin back.

Down the block Ezra's attention is arrested by a tall man leaning up against a lamp post.

His long dark brown, almost black, London Fog coat reaches his feet. Underneath he wears a simple button up shirt, and black pants.

He smiles warmly and has piercing yet wise eyes that pear through long dark hair

He stands looking in Ezra's direction.

Ezra offers one last gesture of appreciation to the deli dealer and then focuses his attention on the strange man a block down.

His appearance wasn't out of place in this part of town, but people of this sort rarely stand around staring at people.

Ezra, intrigued by the mysterious individual, makes his way down the block making a point not to give his intentions away.

The strange man leans forward "Excuse me sir, might you be Mr. Ezra Stern." the man sports an inquisitive look, betraying no signs of guile.

Ezra stops and says casually, "I suppose it depends on who's asking." He dabs his mouth with a napkin in case hot dog residue remains."</aqua> He hated being too suspicious of strangers, especially when trying to establish a business, but he had been in some entanglements lately that made caution necessary. If he was dead, there's be no business at all.

"Oh I do apologize!" His hand shoots forward. "Christian is my name."

"Transparent alloys, time travel and small silver objects are my business."

The man has incredibly controlled posture and sports a charming expression that is nothing short of bullet proof.

"Oh, you'll want to just tap the end of it friend, just the bit with the Mandarin." he gestures to Ezra's pocket. "It's sort of, important; to keep this fixed point from fragmenting and weakening the temporal integrity of this universe."

Ezra nods, "Thanks, a pleasure, Christian. As I am sure you know, I was having a little trouble staying fixed today, which is odd... well for me anyways... since I am fixed." He depresses the the end with the symbol, "Transparent alloys you say? That is something I would definitely be interested in."

Ezra's view goes blurry for a moment as all the light around him comes rushing at him, hugging him, then suddenly it rushes away. Everything clears and Ezra sees that his surroundings have changed. After a second or two he is able to deduce that he is about a block and a half back. The air is a little bit chillier, like it was as he first stepped out into his back ally. Christian has traveled along with him and stands a few feet behind.

Looking across the street Ezra can clearly see the hot dog vendor from before opening a box of hot dog buns. After placing various condiments on his cart the vendor goes about opening the steel covers on his cart to begin his day of sausage selling.

The little bit of sidewalk between Ezra and the crosswalk is fitted with those familiar rusty grates. After a few seconds Ezra can see the opposite traffic lights turn yellow, his walk light would soon be lighting up.

"If you want that thing you're probably going to want to give it to him." he steps back and holds his hand out toward the road, inviting Ezra to cross.

"Oh, hey, actually, wait. Here ya go." he walks up and hands Ezra another small silver object. "There ya go, now you won't be up all night going crazy thinking 'but if I got it by giving it to myself, where'd I get it in the first place.'" The man again steps backward and gives Ezra a quick wink.

Re: Prelude: 112 St and 83 Ave (Prodigy & Ezra) by 112126 Ezra Stern

Ez nods, trying to get his bearings straight again for a second, lifting up his collar against the cold. He heads toward his crossing, keeping well away from the grates as he does.

Re: Prelude: 112 St and 83 Ave (Prodigy & Ezra) by 94807 Christian (NPC)

Ezra walks around the grates, keeping close to the wall of the nearby building. As he approaches the crosswalk he pays close attention to the grates. The light turns green and Ezra is almost at the curb when he trips on a large crack in the sidewalk and stumbles into a traffic sign barely able to grab it to pull himself up. Seconds later a bus races past the curb two feet from where Ezra is standing, apparently having not noticed the red light. Several vehicles traveling the opposite direction slow down to avoid the bus, honking their horns.

"Wow, that was a close one.." he sighs "...I've always liked that part."

Christian stands leaning against the nearby wall watching the situation.

She was pulling up to drop her mother off just a few blocks away from her destination, as she drove she looked around and enjoyed the pleasure of seeing TIME as it truly was.  Something that could help in the future.

Not doing much she then lets her mother out and then drove off.

Re: Prelude: 112 St and 83 Ave (Prodigy & Ezra) by 112126 Ezra Stern

Ezra's face screws into an awkward expression of surprise as he trips, nearly into oncoming traffic. The sudden blaring of all the horns is almost as alarming. He looks up at Christian, a little bleary eyed from the tumult. "Which? The near brush with an oncoming bus or the unceremonious lurch into the street?"

Re: Prelude: 112 St and 83 Ave (Prodigy & Ezra) by 94807 Christian (NPC)

Christian begins walking out onto the cross walk, passing Ezra he replies "I love the part where you save your own life, Mr Stern." Christian steps out on the street and swaggers across to the other side leaving Ezra to follow.

Re: Prelude: 112 St and 83 Ave (Prodigy & Ezra) by 94800 Aether (GM)

The neighborhood is familiar to Prodigy. The university is in sight across a field, a theater she used to go to a couple blocks east, and of course Whyte Ave.

As she pulls out into traffic another wave of deja vu flows over her.  The feeling of driving down this street, in this sort of weather, perhaps a few years ago. She has clear images in her mind of the pedestrians, overcast skies, and the smell of hot dogs. After a moment or two she can feel her pocket watch come to life and the hands go to work showing the effects of time displacement.

As she heads south down the street the address on the piece of paper in her pocket closes on one block away. As Prodigy gets closer she can see a hot dog stand on the corner.

EDIT

Re: Prelude: 112 St and 83 Ave (Prodigy & Ezra) by 113227 Prodigy

Shaking her head she didn't like the feeling of deja vu.  But it all seemed too real, as if she really been here before and did things.

Driving down the road and seeing the hot dog stand made her drive a bit slower, it all seemed to be happening again.  AGAIN, how can that be when this was her first time coming this way today.

The smell of the hot dogs did attract her scent and she pulled over to get something to eat plus she could walk the rest of the way from here.  This was a good place to park cause there might not be a parking spot down the street further.

Exiting the car and walking over to the stand she walked a bit slower than normal, she wanted to make sure that the feeling wasn't going to happen again.

Re: Prelude: 112 St and 83 Ave (Prodigy & Ezra) by 94800 Aether (GM)

Ezra isn't sure what to make of this aloof individual. If anything, he could use some more effective interpersonal skills.

Ezra furrows his brow as Christian walks off mid conversation. Ezra never was one for theatrics, he viewed it as a barrier to communication, and communication was something he very much wished he could have right now.

Taking a second to check for traffic Ezra stepped out onto the street and made his way across to the other side. Christian was already waiting at the hot dog stand, the only customer until a women walked up.

"Yes please." Christian says to the Vendor. "Anything for your friend?" the Vendor asks, apparently having seen them talking across the street. "Oh, uh no," he looks back at Ezra "I think he's going to wait until about 20 minutes ago."

Ezra walks up awkwardly and gives the Vendor a forced smile. It was odd meeting a person you've met before who hasn't met you yet. "No thank you."

Ezra looks to Christian who has already made his way through half his hot dog. Christian gestures to the Vendor.

"Right, uhm, Mr." Ezra looks down at the side and remembers "Mr. Emperor. Would you do me a favor. I'll be coming back here shortly, could you give this to me please?" he holds up the small silver object and after pausing for a second the vendor reaches out and takes the object.

"What is it?"

"It's an... electronic lighter." Ezra throws out a random lie.

"Oh, right. Sure thing friend!"

Ezra looks to Christian who is smiling at the women waiting to order. "What about those metal grates Ezra." Christian still stares awkwardly at the women. Prodigy can't help but return his gaze, feeling somewhat awkward that this random person was staring at her.

"Uh, yes. The grates. This might seem odd, but would you be able to give me a message? Those sidewalk vents a block back...tell me to walk around them."

"Yeah, sure! Have a great one friend." he replies before turning to Prodigy. "What can I get you miss?"

Prodigy had her order ready but was distracted by the name. Ezra? she thought to her self. Prodigy reaches into her pocket and pulls out the piece of paper to confirm the name. Ezra Stern was written very clearly next to the address.

"Ezra Stern?" she asks.

"Maybe...? Who's asking?"

"My name is Prodigy. Would you happen to know anything about a fob watch?"

Ezra looks to Christian, who simply winks at him, before looking back to Prodigy. "Uhm, I know what they used for...?"

Christian throws his napkin in a nearby trash and starts sauntering off down the block.

"Hey now, just wait a second." Ezra commands. The person with all the answers wasn't about to just walk out of his life.

"Excuse me." Prodigy says to the Vendor as she follows after Ezra.

"Sorry mate, places to be, people to send back in time. You know how it is."

Prodigy catches up with Ezra and prepares her series of questions but pauses when Christian spins around. "Wait!..." his eyes shoot back and forth as his mind races "We need to activate you. Now." Christian takes a step back, and crouches slightly. He begins waving his arms up and down, slowly at first then speeding up; apparently indicating the curves of an invisible women. Ezra and Prodigy hear Christian start to gobble. Starting somewhat quietly, then building into a highly audible chant.

At first the act is merely an odd display, but Ezra and Prodigy quickly become very aware of that familiar feeling of warm peanut butter running down the back of your neck or that feeling you get when you don't think about what you may have forgotten to remember. They are also very much aware of each others thoughts and feelings toward the current situation. Ezra and Prodigy each feel their perception start to shift directions, not to the left, or right, or in any direction one would recognize, but in a new direction somewhere in the middle resulting in a mind set completely the same as the opposite of what they weren't seeing before watching a gobbling orangutan. The world has changed somehow, or maybe not the world. Ezra and Prodigy have changed. They feel different. Sort of, at an angle. No, straight, much straighter. Ezra and Prodigy feel balanced and straight up and down, but they can't believe having never before realized how lopsided they had always felt. They were both aware of the others similar feelings.

An unknown amount of time passes and Ezra notices Christian had stopped gobbling and was walking away slowly, toward a traffic sign. "You may want to move out of the way. You'll be come down the block soon."

A voice catches Ezra's ear and he quickly realizes it's his own. Ezra looks back and sees himself talking to the hot dog vendor. Without being completely clear as to why, it becomes clear to him that he should place himself out of sight before his past self approaches. At the same moment Prodigy and Ezra turn and enter the doorway of a nearby building, placing themselves out of line of sight. A moment passes and they watch Past Ezra walk by heading toward Christian.

Re: Prelude: 112 St and 83 Ave (Prodigy & Ezra) by 112126 Ezra Stern

Ez lifts his brows at prodigy, "To quote Alice, 'Curiouser and curiouser'. That's that can really be said. I mean... I'm pretty sure this is all supposed to be going on, I mean... it just feels right, but boy is it a ride. I can barely keep my head on straight, let alone navigate the last few moments. How are you doing?"

Re: Prelude: 112 St and 83 Ave (Prodigy & Ezra) by 113227 Prodigy

Shaking her head to help clear her thoughts, she didn't know what to say at first but once she heard Ezra voice walking toward them she too thought it wouldn't be a good thing to see himself or let alone she would we walking down that was soon as well.

Everything happens for a reason she thought.

Following Ezra down into a doorway she looked back once to see where her past self was at this moment.  Or was there a past life of herself.  She knew that her own Avatar was of the ancient past.

Now hearing the present Ezra speak to her she turned to him. "I am feeling better now, just that first rush was something.  But still I'm wondering what is going on.  How did we even do what just happened.

Re: Prelude: 112 St and 83 Ave (Prodigy & Ezra) by 112126 Ezra Stern

Ezra hmmms, "Do you have any talent with Ars Temporis or Ars Conjunctio? The most I can make of it is that two different timelines were intersecting, but I think the other me knew something in that time that I needed to know now... perhaps. Does that makes sense?"

Re: Prelude: 112 St and 83 Ave (Prodigy & Ezra) by 113227 Prodigy (editor)

Nodding her head but she didn't say to what question.

"Let us move somewhere safer.  I don't like this

His sentence is cut short as all the light around Past-Ezra comes rushing at him, hugging him, and then Past-Ezra and all the air around him suddenly vanishes with a subtle snapping sound followed by a low thump as the vacuum is quickly filled.

Christian turns to Ezra, "I'd be happy to setup an appointment, I offer very competitive prices." apparently resuming his past [or present?] conversation.

Just then a smart car quickly appears from around the building, whirling around the curb stopping instantly a few meters from Christian. "Ah, fantastic. Our transportation."

The passenger door opens and an excited man leaps out of the passenger door and runs around to the sidewalk.

"Ezra!" Ezra recognizes the man as Tome, his cabal mate.
"Are you alright man?
St'-Stan..."

"Stephen!" The driver of the car says, as he pops his head out the drive side window.

"Yeah Stephen! told me about those Agents of the Greys."

"Agents of Grey Face." Stephen corrects him again.

Tome quickly looks Ezra over, checking for any obvious injury.

We all remember it: March 3, 2013, the NDP Party led by Brian Mason won a majority government. Proving that change is not only needed, but coming. Re: Prelude: Christine - The Alarm Goes Off by 111403 Christine Buchmann

Seems as if this committee has a lot to do...
Christine stretches herself, still in her bed, then puts away the blanket and stands up. The radio is still on, filling her apartement with music and news. Mostly news, to be precise.
On the way to the bathroom she checks her 'things to do' list for today and turns on the coffee machine.

Enjoying her coffee Christine sits at the small table in her kitchen, a towel around her hair. There's still time before work starts, so she logs in to Chess-Online and checks her game against 'Maverick', an experienced chess-player on that site. It seems as if Maverick has made a new move to corner Christines king and it takes Christine a while to figure out a move to get out of it - for now.

-------------------------------
To Do:
O cherry-cake recipe (Mom)
+ next turn on Chess-Online
O library!
-------------------------------

Re: Prelude: Christine - The Alarm Goes Off by 111403 Christine Buchmann

Around midday, during her break, Christine phones her mother and asks for the cherry-cake recipe.
"Christine! How are you? I haven't heard of you for over two weeks!"

"I'm fine, Mom. No need to worry. The last weeks were just very busy, we've got a new project at work and only now enough people to actually start working on it."

"There's always a little time for a call if you really want to." Now her mothers voice sounds reproachful and Christine almost regrets not having called her earlier.

"I'm sorry!" Christine takes a deep breath and then changes the topic. "I wanted to ask you about that cherry-cake recipe. You know, the one Martha likes so much. She's coming here next week and I thought it would be nice to have a cherry-cake here."

The talk carries on for several more minutes with Christine catching up to the family news. Not very exciting, but at least everyone back home seemed to be happy.

Christine puts the small paper with the recipe in the pocket of her jeans and turns back to her work. She has not been lying, there is a lot to do and they still lack two or three scientists for the project.
At least John is there, too. A colleague of Christine, who looks almost like a Cowboy sometimes, though Christine couldn't pinpoint what makes her think of him that way. True, he wears jeans most of the time and sometimes even a plaid shirt - though he sticks with plain shirts most of the time - but other than that...

"Breaks over?" John asks a little surprised and stands up from his chair, his sandwich half-eaten in his hands.

Re: Prelude: Christine - The Alarm Goes Off by 94800 Aether (GM)

Christine sits in her chair and tries to get back into work mode.

She looks up at her computer and sees a pink sticky note on the side of the screen.

"and then put it in the freezer."

John calls from the breakroom. "Christine, coffee?"

Re: Prelude: Christine - The Alarm Goes Off by 111403 Christine Buchmann

With a frown Christine takes the sticky note from the screen and puts it into her pocket, too.
"Coffee sounds great", she calls back at John and turns her attention back to the screen. There was this diagram she wanted to finish today...

Re: Prelude: Christine - The Alarm Goes Off by 94800 Aether (GM)

Christine navigates the screen with her mouse and clicks her project. Moments after it opens a banana drops from above her onto the desk.

Wrapped around it is a pink sticky note that says "pick this up, go into the breakroom..."

Re: Prelude: Christine - The Alarm Goes Off by 111403 Christine Buchmann

Christine couldn't help but take a look up to where the banana has come from. Someone really dislikes me doing my work. First the sticky note with the freezer, now this one... With another annoyed look at the banana - where did it come from, anyway? - Christine picks it up, puts the sticky note in her pocket to the other one and heads over into the breakroom.
"I just forgot something", she murmurs as she enters the room. There's no way explaimimg to John that a banana just fell off the ceiling.

Re: Prelude: Christine - The Alarm Goes Off by 94800 Aether (GM)

Christine walks into the break room and sees John standing by a counter posed in an awkward way. He has one hand on a hip and sports a exceptionally camp smile.

"Brought you coffee didn't I have to could have walk over you Christine."

He turns back and continues stirring. "Accounting got it fixed hey, that charge back. I'm glad of it, horrible mess."

Off to Christine's left is the fridge/freezer, a microwave and a water cooler.

Along with several mail-order magnets proclaiming the benefits of cleanliness at work, two dozen magnetized letters and numbers cover the door to the freezer. a cluster of letters in the middle read dOnT DRINK iT.

Christine's cell phone starts vibrating in her pocket.

Re: Prelude: Christine - The Alarm Goes Off by 111403 Christine Buchmann

"It's alright, I just forgot to check something." Christine smiles at John and turns towards the freezer, only to frown slightly at the message on the door of it. Now, what's that supposed to mean?
As her phone starts ringing Christine pulls it out and glances at the display. She puts the cell phone back into the pocket, pulls open the freezer and takes a look inside, then glances upwards, almost expecting another banana to fall down.
"The coffee machine broke?" she asks, sounding more casual than she actually feels.

Re: Prelude: Christine - The Alarm Goes Off by 94800 Aether (GM)

Christine manages to piece together the unusual happenings. She reaffirms to herself that the coffee may not be the best idea. Then in her minds eye the messages become clear.
"I'm sending something for you. It will help. Look up... Pick this up, go into the break room and then put it in the freezer."

Re: Prelude: Christine - The Alarm Goes Off by 111403 Christine Buchmann

With a short look to John Christine puts the banana - and the sticky notes, for good measure - in the freezer, then closes the door of it again.

Re: Prelude: Christine - The Alarm Goes Off by 94811 Stephen (NPC)

After a moment or two Christine can hear a light electric crackling sound come from in the freezer. It lasts only a second, and then silence.

The silence is broken by the sound of the coffee maker finishing it's brew. Christine turns to see John holding the carafe full of coffee and a cup. Just as the coffee falls from the carafe it slows to a crawl in mid air and takes it's time entering the cup. Not just the coffee seems to have slowed down, the bubbles in the water cooler take their time raising to the top, and the second hand on the clock moves at a fraction the speed.

Suddenly in the middle of the room a low hum builds and quickly climaxes in a bright flash of light. The flash sends cracks and fractures tearing through the tile on the floor and also results in a man appearing several feet off the floor, upside down, before promptly dropping to the floor. "Wahaahaaaaa...ugh!"

He stands quickly and jumps off the pain. "Wooooooooooooh!! Awesome!" he screems. The man stands about 5'4" with red hair and sports several scars on his face and arms and has an apparently very fresh cut on his cheek and a developing black eye. He points over at the freezer "Thanks, the uh, potassium, it gets cold and uh..."

He quickly looks around and sees John behind him, still several minutes away from filling the cup with coffee. "..Oh ya ok, I see what you mean. Lets do something about that."

The man faces John holding his arms high in the air, snaps his fingers and then strikes a rather camp disco pose. A long enough moment passes that it seems like he had done absolutely nothing, but Johns visage quickly starts to shudder and slowly starts to meld and stretch revealing an entirely different entity.

The red haired man walks slowly around the odd creature, searching in his pocket for something. He pulls out a small device, plays with it for a second, and then points it at the creature and makes a sound with his mouth similar to an classic 1960s laser pistol. The red haired man places the device on the counter, takes the carafe and cup, places them on the counter and walks back to the creature placing a hand on it's shoulder. He winks at Christine and gives her a nod before both him and the creature vanish, sending another wave of fractures through the floor tiles. Bloobloobloop... the bubbles in the water cooler have returned to their usual cheerful selves.

Re: Prelude: Christine - The Alarm Goes Off by 111403 Christine Buchmann

For a moment Christine just stares at the man who suddenly appeared from... somewhere. "Hi", she finally manages to say, when he suddenly turns John into something else. Or was it something else appearing to be John? Suddenly her knees feel as if they can't support her weight any longer and Christine steps over to the counter and leans against it for several moments.

After a while she takes a closer look at the device the red haired man put there, but she avoids to tocuh the coffee carafe and the cup.

Re: Prelude: Christine - The Alarm Goes Off by 95130 Jacob (NPC)

The device sits in Christine's hand, dormant. A long and thin silver object, it had a small symbol on one end.

The second Christine looks up she sees an orangutan standing between her and the room where her desk was. He stands up tall, dignified.

Around the orangutan's neck is a collar with a brass tag showing his name. Jacob

Jacob is wearing a chocolate coloured bow tie.

Jacob stands facing Christine, and begins waving his arms up and down very quickly; apparently indicating the curves of an invisible women. Christine hears the primate start to gobble like a turkey, starting somewhat quietly, then building into a highly audible chant.

At first the act is merely an odd display, but Christine quickly becomes very aware of that familiar feeling of warm peanut butter running down the back of your neck. Or that feeling you get when you don't think about what you may not have forgotten to remember. Either way Christine's perception was now completely the same as the opposite of what it was before watching a gobbling orangutan.

The room has changed somehow, or maybe not the room. Christine has changed. She feels different. Sort of, at an angle. No, straight. Christine feels balanced and straight up and down, but can't believe she had never before realized how lopsided she had always felt.

Re: Prelude: Christine - The Alarm Goes Off by 111403 Christine Buchmann

Christine tried to gulp down the surprise of seeing the second unexpected visitor in not even five minutes. Then she shook her head to get rid of the strange feeling. "Uhm, hello. Jacob?" She wondered if the orangutan was able to speak while at the same moment guessing that it might just be the case. "I suppose you're not here for my work, are you?" Resisting the urge to offer him a frozen banana Christine leans back against the counter, trying to at least seem relaxed at visitors popping into the office every few moments.

Re: Prelude: Christine - The Alarm Goes Off by 95130 Jacob (NPC)

"Miss Buchmann, it is truly an honor."

"If you would like to know what - that, was - you will need to come with me. I will explain everything to you. Including why you are in danger, and who the man was."

Jacob almost forgets something and adds as an afterthought "...and why you are able to hear me."

He extends an elbow for Christine to take.

Re: Prelude: Christine - The Alarm Goes Off by 111403 Christine Buchmann

"For all I know you could be dangerous, too", Christine said with a wry smile. "Could you also explain to me if John was, well, John or if he always was this... thing?" Carefully she made a step towards Jacob, then took the offered elbow. Who would go through all this length of appearing and disappearing if they just wanted to see her dead?

Re: Prelude: Christine - The Alarm Goes Off by 95130 Jacob (NPC)

Jacob, leading Christine by the arm, takes her over to a supply room and leaving her in front of the door way reaches in and pulls the door shut. He then presses his hands together for a moment, then opens them to reveal a key in one hand. He locks the door, then unlocks it and opens the door. Through the door way Christine can see something entirely different from before. Instead of a supply room the doorway opens up into a long hallway. The unusual circumstances don't seem to faze her as they normally would. She finds herself easily able to accept her office now has a doorway into a completely different locale.

"Shall we?" he holds his arm out again for Christine to take.

Re: Prelude: Christine - The Alarm Goes Off by 111403 Christine Buchmann

Christine cautiously accepts the arm and holds it lightly, wondering whether she would get the answers she'd asked for.

The application of correspondence to meld these two locales filtered through her mind just as easily as climbing a flight of stairs, or entering through an exit window.

Re: Prelude: Christine - The Alarm Goes Off by 95130 Jacob (NPC)

Jacob lead her through the doorway and closed the door behind them.

"You are very correct Ms. Buchmann. I could be dangerous; but I can only hope the last thirty six years are about to prove my loyalty to you and your family."

The odd path his words took fell into place for Christine, as she connected the beginning of one event with the end of the next.

"You're co-worker is safe to be sure. He were able to time him just under eleven years under this one. Efforts to rehabilitate have already begun." he turns and gives Christine a reassuring smile.
"Still, gray face should not have been able to elude our fingers like that.

That, thing from before, if you see one again do not fear it, it is no longer capable of harming you."

The journey down the corridor comes to an end as they reach door number twenty three.

Jacob knocks and then waits. "I'm glad you're on channel number five now, this next bit could otherwise make you a bit crazy."

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off by 136092 Herbert Cummings (Player)

3-2, that's curious.  Oh well, still a win.

Herbert slaps the top of the clock-radio to stop the incessant ramblings. "Up and at 'em Herb," he tells himself before groaning and rolling out of bed.

The covers roll out with him, having been wrapped around like a cocoon, cushioning his fall.  He presses his forehead to the cold laminate and tries to will energy into his limbs. Too much rum. Ooo, money! He wriggles out of his cocoon, reaches under the bed to grab the crumpled up $5 bill, tosses it on his rumpled bed and pulls his body upward.

He scratches, stretches, plops back on the bed beside the bill.

"HOO-HOO!"

"Oh, sush, Calcifer! You sound like a kid's wooden whistle and I'm a bit...Ok, a lot hung over."

Despite his words, Herbert pushes himself out of his squeaky, low bed and crosses the three feet to pick up the little burrowing owl. He cradles the bird in his arm and scratches the bird's neck.  It closes its eyes in pleasure.

"Hungry?"

Calcifer's responding hoot is enough to signify an answer. He places the owl on a perch, no more than a stick glued and nailed to the side of the bookshelf filled with an assortment of objects. Herbert pops the mesh lid off a terrarium and makes kissy noises at the cockroaches inside. He selects one of the insects as Calcifer's breakfast, puts another in a low plastic container in case the owl wants more and proceeds to find some clothes to wear.

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off by 136092 Herbert Cummings (Player)

He opens the tiny 2-drawer dresser that isn't much more than his night stand and grabs a clean pair of underwear. He has to pick his blanket up from the floor to find the pants he wants to wear so the thick faded-green comforter ends up back on his bed. He pulls his grey jeans on, stretches and yawns, falling back onto the bed.

The old phone in his pocket vibrates signifying a text.

"Tee-hee! Hello, Ryan?"

Another notification makes him reach into his pocket to pull his phone out. He rubs his left eye, yawns again and checks the messages.

Six of Spades: Meet for your winnings you lucky bastard.
Six of Spades: Bring your bets for tonight's game?

"Well, duh." He rolls his eyes, looks over at Calcifer and shakes his head. "What do we feel today, hmm?"

Out of the other pocket of his jeans he pulls out a pair of bone-colored dice. He rolls them one at a time into the lid of an empty pizza box on the floor. He takes a quick look at the dice, fidgeting with his phone, and then types out his reply.

After a moment's thought he puts the phone down without sending the message.  Calcifer makes his toy-whistle noise, wide eyes intent. Herbert stands up, shoves the $5 bill in his pocket and straightens out the bed. What do I feel today? Something new? Work? Quiznos?

He crosses the three feet back to Calcifer's book shelf and grabs a palm-sized pair of blue felt dice.

"Here, blow for luck," he says to the bird, holding the dice out.

Calcifer nips one of the dice lightly and chirrups.

"Close enough."

He takes a deep breath, blows on the dice himself and tosses them onto the half-made bed. He picks up the phone, deletes the unsent text and types out a new one.

Me: No dice. Meeting will have to be postponed. Take the profit and put it all on the soccer game.  Brantford Galaxy, 4-2 high stakes. Keep initial as tip, spread the wealth to your baby-mama.

"We're goin' out today Cal."

Herbert grabs a dark blue dress shirt, only slightly rumpled, from the back of one of the kitchen chairs, gathers up his wallet and keys, grabs his black trench coat last.  He runs a brush through his long hair almost as an after-thought. He pats his pockets to make sure he has everything, realizes he doesn't.  Grabs the dice out of the pizza box, the ones on the bed and a small notebook jammed under his clock-radio. Almost at the door he turns again, grabs a small wooden box from the top of the fridge.  He snatches up the last two cockroaches, closes them up in the box and pockets that.

"Ready Calci?"

He holds open the biggest pocket on the inside of the trench coat. Calcifer glides off his perch, catches his claws briefly on Herbert's hip and hops into the pocket.

"Ouch! Time to trim buddy."

He scratches the owl's head and makes for the door.

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off by 95130 Jacob (NPC)

Herbert opens the door to find an orangutan standing in the hall facing him. It has a rather unimpressed look on it's face. It's left hand shoots forward, offering a bag of hot dog buns. It wraps it's bottom lip up over it's top as if to punctuate the offer.
  aaaaaand ==>

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off by 136092 Herbert Cummings (Player)

Herbert startles, dropping his keys and making Calcifer hoot at him.  He looks down the hall and then studies the orangutan.

"Uh...Hello?"

Well, what do you do with a big orange monkey anyway?

He slowly reaches out to take the buns, keeping his body as much inside his apartment as possible and one hand on the doorknob. "Thank you?"

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off by 95130 Jacob (NPC)

The orangutan puts it's hand to it's chin and gestures thank you in sign language.

Around the orangutan's neck is a collar with a brass tag showing his name. Jacob

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off by 136092 Herbert Cummings (Player)

"Uh...yeah, ok. So," Herbert leans forward to look at the name tag. "Jacob. Alright. Would you...like to come in? Or something?"

Herbert takes a step back and opens the door wider.

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off by 95130 Jacob (NPC)

Jacob waddles into the apartment and heads into the living room.

He waits for Herbert to close the door and join him.

As Herbert walks into the living room he can see Jacob adopting a wide stance.

Jacob stands facing Herbert, and begins waving his arms up and down very quickly; apparently indicating the curves of an invisible women. Herbert hears the primate start to gobble. Starting somewhat quietly, then building into a highly audible chant.

At first the act is merely an odd display, but Herbert quickly becomes very aware of that familiar feeling of warm peanut butter running down the back of your neck. Or that feeling you get when you don't think about what you may have forgotten to remember. Either way Herbert's perception was now completely the same as the opposite of what it was before watching a gobbling orangutan.

Herbert is suddenly aware that the orangutan had stopped gobbling and was sitting on his couch smoking. Jacob is now wearing a chocolate coloured bow tie and has his legs crossed.

The room has changed somehow, or maybe not the room. Herbert has changed. He feels different. Sort of, at an angle. No, straight. Herbert feels balanced and straight up and down, but can't believe he had never before realized how lopsided he had always felt.

"Yes, well. You are welcome." Jacob says.

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off by 136092 Herbert Cummings (Player)

"Hrrerr," Herbert squeaked. He cleared his throat and tried again.

"What just..?"

His mouth opened and closed, like a fish out of water. Suddenly a bunch of thoughts popped into his head at once and took a deep breath. His mouth stopped flapping uselessly. He looked at the hot dog buns, squished in his fist, tossed them onto the kitchen counter. He opened his coat to check on Calcifer, scratching the owl's head to comfort him. Finally he crossed the room, threw open the balcony window to clear the smoke and stood staring at Jacob.

"What are you?"

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off by 95130 Jacob (NPC)

The smell of marijuana was a strong undertone in the smoke, accented by overtones of dried fruit.

"Jacob." he takes another drag "Thats my name."

"Tell me Herbert, why does Pickering’s Moon go about in reverse orbit?" he puts the cigarette to his lips.

"There are nipples on your chests sir;" he says through a cloud of smoke."...when do you expect you'll need to breast feed?"

"And what, the fuck, is up with Heisenberg’s Law?" as he swears Herbert becomes aware of a subtle British accent that he hadn't noticed prior.

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off by 136092 Herbert Cummings (Player)

Herbert contemplates.  "Kay. Jacob."

He closes the window a bit before taking the owl out of his pocket and sitting on the arm of the sofa.  "Right, look, I have no idea what's going on here and I'm sorta freaking out. You just come out of nowhere and I'm cool with that because that sort of shit is like my recipe for heaven or whatever but this is so far from Kansas we're not even in Oz anymore. I have questions but I'm not even going to ask right now."

He frowns at Jacob and wraps his hands protectively around Calcifer. "You have nipples too, you know!"

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off by 95130 Jacob (NPC)

"Yes, frightfully disturbing at first, but I've learned to worship them." Jacob says in response to the comment about his nipples.

"Do you ever think about where all of this confusion, all of this discord, where all of it came from fnord?"

Jacob stood from the couch and put out his 'cigarette'. "Order, probability..." from behind his bow tie he pulls a small silver device. Pauses for second, looks over into the kitchen for a second, and then back to Herbert. "..they are keeping you from doing things like th..." his word is cut off as Jacob and all the air around him suddenly vanish with a subtle snapping sound and a low thump as the vacuum is quickly filled.

A moment later Jacob pops back into the room where he had vanished from, holding the same bag of hot dog buns from before. He places the buns on the table and sits back down on the couch. "So, about Heisenberg’s Law..." Just then, Herbert hears a knock at the door.

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off by 136092 Herbert Cummings (Player)

Herbert remains silent during the whole ordeal, until the knock on the door brings him out of the thoughts that had him trapped. He sits Calcifer on his shoulder and stands up simultaneously. He walks toward the door slowly, turning to walk backwards so he can talk and face the orangutan in case something else peculiar happens.

"Do I ever think about it? Welcome to my life, Jacob. I can't stop thinking about randomness. It's like some stupid rotting pudding stuck up here," he taps his forehead on the right side. "I can't explain how badly I need to figure this stuff out, to understand it."

He pauses with his hand on the door. "This could be my landlady or a neighbor asking about the smell. Can you hide?"

He quickly throws his hands up at chest level, palms forward, eyes wide. "But don't leave!"

The idea that this was a mental break-down from his "career" or some drug was laced into his drink last night had crossed his mind, certainly, but he didn't want this fantastic opportunity to just vanish.

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off by 95130 Jacob (NPC)

Jacob steps a few feet to the side, out of line of sight from the doorway.

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off by 136092 Herbert Cummings (Player)

Herbert nods and slowly opens the door enough to stick his head through.

"Hello?"

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off by 111403 Christine Buchmann

"Hi", Christine said as someone spoke behind the door. She looked at Jacob, wondering if he would say something, since she didn't even know why they were here or what they were about to talk about with the one living here.

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off by 95130 Jacob (NPC)

Jacob from the hall saunters past Herbert into his kitchen and grabs the original bag of Hot Dog Buns, leaving Christine in the hall. Jacob from the living room walks out into view and approaches Herbert. Passing the Jacob from the hall he nods his head "Evening Jacob..."

The Jacob from the hall nods back "Jacob." as he takes out the small silver object and again taps one end sucking him into a single point and vanishing from the kitchen with a pop.

The Jacob remaining walks up to Christine and offers her his hand, "would you care to join us?"

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off by 136092 Herbert Cummings (Player)

Herbert frowns at the new Jacob as the door is shoved open. "Hey!"  His grip on the door handle tightens, his teeth grind and he forces a deep breath through his nose.

"Listen, you. Jacob. I don't think I can deal with having another guest at this moment, you are brain-numbing as it is."  He grabs the buns, shoves them out the door at the strange woman and shuts the door.  He opens the door again, says, "Sorry, I'm sure you are nice and all, it's nothing personal," and shuts it again.

"It's not polite," he says as he turns to the orangutan. "To invite people into a guy's territory without his permission."

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off by 111403 Christine Buchmann

Christine catches the buns being shoved at her but looks too surprised to answer anything before the door is shut. When the door suddenly opens again she managed to say: "I'm sorry, I thought you knew about this visit." Then the door slammed shut again, leaving Christine out of the apartment again.

OOC: is Jacob inside the apartment or outside with Christine? I'm not certain.

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off by 136092 Herbert Cummings (Player)

Herbert stands at the door frowning at the floor. He sighs, rolls his head around on his shoulders and then opens the door again.

"Shut the door behind you," he says as he makes his way into the kitchen.  He grabs a glass and turns the tap on full to fill it, splashing along the back of the sink.

To Do:
O cherry-cake recipe (Mom)
+ next turn on Chess-Online
O library!

Re: Prelude: Prodigy - The Alarm Goes Off by 113227 Prodigy

It was another morning and Prodigy was used to getting up, taking a nice hot shower and then making herself some breakfast.  But for some strange reason today she didn't feel like eating.

Hearing on the radio about how the new PEDA was nearly finished.  Why did the president have to worry so much about "Ethical and Moral values of the people", did he not have enough on his place and how would they determine those of mystical abilities. Would they give us our own moral value? she thought as she was brushing her hair.

Picking out a few pieces of her nicer clothing she dressed for the day. It was going to be a cold one and she didn't plan on freezing her tush off.  With heavy leather jacket and a nice wool sweater underneath would surely keep the chill off her.  But then again she could try to conjure up a spell that would keep her warm.

Re: Prelude: Prodigy - The Alarm Goes Off by 113227 Prodigy

She finished up brushing her hair and then proceed to head downstairs to see if her mother was going to question her on what she plans to do about college.  Her mother wanted her to go to Yale but her father was pushing her for the local colleges.  Prodigy was a well educated young girl and many would consider her a genius, but she liked to think of herself as a normal girl.

Walking down the steps she thought of what to do for the day but something caught her eye outside by the window.  A figure was standing there looking inside the house but then it just faded away. That alone made her gasp, but she knew know to alert her mother for it could only cause more problems.

"I'm going out she said as she walked to the front door.

Re: Prelude: Prodigy - The Alarm Goes Off by 94800 Aether (GM)

In the mail slot Prodigy finds a small stack of mail. Several envelops addressed to her and her mother, but two of them have an incorrect address from across town. This has been going on for the last couple months. Every few weeks. Prodigy's mother has sent it back to the postal office with 'Wrong Address' scribed over them, but they still seem to come.

The address on the envelopes is to a clock shop on the other end of town. A Mr. Gone's Clockworks.

Also, the new library downtown is now open. It had been open for the last few days, but the first day was a private dedication, and the next day a private gala for VIPs and investors. One of the things you like best about it is that they have consolidated many of the libraries in the city's inner core into this one large one. It is rumored that this new library caters to alternative content by building an evening lounge on one of the below ground levels. It will be home to underground, alternative, and subculture content.

Today is one of the two days a week that the cities community college is having an open house. One of the letters that came today was addressed admail with a general invitation to residence of the city. The letter seemed iniquitous enough, except the page stapled to the back has a hand written schedule for the open house and a badly drawn map of the city showing how to get there.

Re: Prelude: Prodigy - The Alarm Goes Off by 113227 Prodigy

Wrapping herself tightly to keep the cold off her, but she knew it wasn't going to be that bad.  If she had to, she knew how to make the air around herself a bit warmer than normal.

"See you later mother. she said as she went out the door. It also seemed that she was given a great allowance for she liked to shop for things that was expensive.

Walking to the mailbox before getting into her car, she looked at the mail before driving off. I wonder why are we getting this mail. He never lived here and the addresses are completely different. she thought.  Placing the mail in her hand she walked over to the car but looked at the ones that had her name upon them.  She was glad to see that there was more info on the Library but she also was looking for her own invitation to some of the special events.

Backing her car up and heading out to work she thought of dropping the mail off to Mr. Gone's Clockworks seeing that it was in the same direction she was heading.

Once at the shop, she walked in and looked for the owner.  She wanted to know why his mail keeps ending up at her place.

"Hello, hello is anyone here? she asked.

Re: Prelude: Prodigy - The Alarm Goes Off by 111718 Daniel Tammet

Looking around Prodigy sees all the various wall clocks, floor clocks and desk/counter top clocks scattered around. There doesn't seem to be a single item in the show room with a price tag on it.

The counter is covered in small, impulse buy, made-in-china trinkets.

From a door to the rear of the room a man in his late 40s, maybe early 50s walks into the room carrying a box. He eyes Prodigy and freezes in his place, staring at her.

After a moment he resumes his path to the counter and puts the box down, watching Prodigy carefully.

"Yes..? How can I help you?"

Re: Prelude: Prodigy - The Alarm Goes Off by 113227 Prodigy

Noticing the man stopping in his tracks and looking at her for a bit made her feel a bit uncomfortable.  But she had a mission and was going to see it through.

"Are you Mr. Clockworks ? she asked in a soft tone.

"Your mail keeps coming to my place and I was hoping that you could contact the Post Office and let them know that you don't live on the other side of town. she allowed her eyes to gaze around the room a bit more and then ending up on the man.

She wanted to focus her eyes on him as well to see if there was any mystical auras around here.

You rolled 3 successes using 5d10 with the World of Darkness 3rd ed system with a target of 6 ((9,2,10,4,9))

Re: Prelude: Prodigy - The Alarm Goes Off by 111718 Daniel Gone

"No..." he says, preoccupied with the envelopes.

He slowly walks around the side of the counter to Prodigy.

Looking around Prodigy sees cabinets behind the counter, filled with various clock related curios and collectable trinkets. Between the cabinets there is a wall covered with pictures of various people. Some with the shop keeper in them, either posing with his companions or hard at work with them.

A couple of the frames are deeper, containing various objects. One such frame contains a single letter envelope with the same markings, address and shape as one of the envelopes Prodigy has brought with her. The only difference is the color of the envelope, a faded brown off yellow color, adding many years to it's age.

The store keeper walks up to Prodigy.

"May I see them?"

"...uh, Mr. Gone." he adds.

"...please?"

Re: Prelude: Prodigy - The Alarm Goes Off by 113227 Prodigy

She relaxed a bit more when she wasn't noticing much mystical auras in the area, but still don't mean that there will be some soon.

As he is walking closer she takes a step back for a moment. her eyes looking at the wall where a couple of the frames containing various objects. And one such frame contains a single letter envelope with the same markings, address and shape as one of in her hand.  At first she got a bit nervousness to see that he had one on his wall but then again if he was dangerous why would he post it.

Taking a deep breath she took a step toward him and handed him the letters.

"Can you tell me more about it.  It seems that they are more than just a letter that is accidentally being sent to my place.

Re: Prelude: Prodigy - The Alarm Goes Off by 113227 Prodigy

There was something that Mr. Gones wasn't telling her but he did know something about these letters.  If not then why would he have one framed.

Re: Prelude: Prodigy - The Alarm Goes Off by 111718 Daniel Gone

Mr. Gone takes the envelope from Prodigy and looks it over briefly before sliding it into his inner jacket pocket.

"It's a...

Well, it's, one circle closing, and, another one opening." he smiles at Prodigy, pausing for a second to watch her reaction before moving back behind the counter.

As he rounds it's corner, the bell to the front door rings and the door swings open.

A man in a gray trench coat and faded burgundy fess enters with a concerned look on his face.

Mr.Gone furrows his brow and holds up a hand to Prodigy. "Please...uh, just," this unsuccessful social pleasantry is cut short as he returns to the other side of the counter to greet the man.

The oddly dressed man stops a few feet short of the counter. Ruff! the man barks like a dog and gives Mr. Gone a half bow.

Meow... Mr.Gone replies.

"Calm down my friend, stop being paranoid." He takes a step closer to the man and quietly reassures him "They are after you; but you're in no immediate danger." Mr.Gones comment sends fear into the mans face and he goes a little pale. Mr.Gone takes the mans hand and discreetly places something in it. The man looks down into his hand and then back to Mr.Gone, he nods hurriedly and then leaves.

As Mr.Gone walks slowly back to the counter Prodigy hears a faint low electric hum in her ears. She can't quite place where it's coming from.  "I am sorry... He uh.. these people, completely..." his comment trails off as he searches for where their conversation was left off.

"Oh. Yes, the letter." He pulls it and looks it over. "It is kinda, weird hey." a warm smile shows for a moment and he giggles a little bit.

"Oh, yes. aaaaand. This was left for you." he hides away the letter and pulls from under the counter something wrapped in a deep purple velvet.
He places it down on the counter in front of Prodigy and points at it. "It a..."

he cocks his head and stares at it for a second. "It's."

"I don't know."

Re: Prelude: Prodigy - The Alarm Goes Off by 113227 Prodigy

She kept quiet and watched the strange interaction between the two men.  But when she heard Mr. Gone speak of the man's future that only made her wonder more.  Was he tuned into the Sphere of Time or was he a Prophet.  Either way she waited there for his return and when he did she looked at him a bit more to wonder what was so special about him.

"Why would you use the word weird, life is full of surprises.  One must needs to know how to accept them. her eyebrow arched when she was done saying that but still this was all a game that he was winning.

She looked at the counter something wrapped in a deep purple velvet. Another mystery unfolding and she seems to be just starting.

"I do have to wonder how many circles will be placed before me before I reach the end.

Taking the item she wanted to know what it was.  Slowly she unwrapped the cloth to see what was in her possession.

Re: Prelude: Prodigy - The Alarm Goes Off by 94800 Aether (GM)

"Surprises, yes, indeed."

Unwrapping the velvet reveals a titanium fob watch, accented by brass designs. If Prodigy opens it she finds 4 hands and 4 dials. They represent milliseconds, seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months and years respectively.

Re: Prelude: Prodigy - The Alarm Goes Off by 113227 Prodigy

She looked at it then at the man "Do you know who left this here for me? she asked and was in shock by the nice design.

She had no idea as to what it was really for or was capable of doing. She knew her mother didn't have nothing to do with this so who.  All the females of her family seemed to possess a strong knack for the Spheres but Prodigy was extra rare for she was awaken at a very young age like her own mother.

Re: Prelude: Prodigy - The Alarm Goes Off by 111718 Daniel Gone

Prodigy's question takes a second to sink it, but eventually sparks a warm smile.

"Someone who I'm sure has your best interests at heart. That is a very fine watch."

He pulls back his sleeve showing 3 old worn out wrist watches, checks them and then disappears under the counter. He pops back up with a pad of paper and a pen.

"Here, if you'd like to thank them in person, they should be at...112 st..and, 83 ave. At, 4:13. This afternoon." he jots it all down as he speaks, taking care to print clearly. He hands Prodigy the paper and then checks his watches again. "I'll be closing up here soon, but you're more than welcome to come back. I'll be getting in some new things next thursday."

Prodigy's cell phone begins to vibrate.

Re: Prelude: Prodigy - The Alarm Goes Off by 113227 Prodigy

She looked down at the watch again "It looks very expensive. her words were almost a whisper when they came out.  She didn't know who was that kind and knew her.

Listening to where she should go wasn't in the same direction she was heading but still this was starting to be more of a mystery to her.

When her phone vibrated she looked down to see who's number was showing .

Re: Prelude: Prodigy - The Alarm Goes Off by 94800 Aether (GM)

Prodigy looks down at her phone and sees "Mum" on the screen.

TEXT: 'Habibti, I need to be heading to my appointment in a little bit. Would you be able to drive me to Whyte Ave? We would need extra time because of traffic. Stacy says they are redirecting traffic up 112 St.'

Holding the watch Prodigy feels the familiar feeling of prime coming off the watch.

EDITED

Re: Prelude: Prodigy - The Alarm Goes Off by 113227 Prodigy

Looking at the man "I will like to come back one day and talk more about things.  It seems that now is not the time and I have other things that needs to be taken care of.

It was good to meet you Mr. Gone. wrapping the watch back up in the cloth and carefully putting it in her pocket.

Then she walked out and returned a text
TEXT: I will be on my way home and can drive you.  It will be a moment for me.

Re: Prelude: Prodigy - The Alarm Goes Off by 94800 Aether (GM)

Mr. Gone bows slightly and thanks Prodigy for visiting.

Prodigy walks down the street towards her car and getting closer she can see a parking enforcement officer near it. He is more or less ordinary and a somewhat handsome looking fellow with shoulder length hair, sitting on a bench smiling at her. As Prodigy approaches her car he tips his hat. "Hello there."

Re: Prelude: Prodigy - The Alarm Goes Off by 113227 Prodigy

She looked at the man next to her car and gave him a nod of her head "Good day sir.  Just a tad bit too cold for this time of the year.  Wouldn't you agree? she asked to get his intake on the day.

Moving up to her car with her keys in hand she was prepared to quickly get in her car and get out of there and make a phone call to her mother.  But it seemed that this man was going to try to delay her somewhat.

Re: Prelude: Prodigy - The Alarm Goes Off by 94800 Aether (GM)

Prodigy gets in her car and heads off toward home.

Arriving she sees her mom standing in the door way.

Her mom gets in the car and it isn't long before they are heading toward downtown.

"Stacy says she heard something about an Orangutan running around outside near the University. It was stopping traffic and causing all sorts of commotion. She says it must have escaped from the University but I don't believe that, why would they have an Orangutan at the University? It doesn't make sense, but you know Stacy she believes anything she hears, she even reads those Anchorer magazines that are just full of garbage, just the other day she tried to convince me..." she goes on as she usually does, chatting with Prodigy.

Note: Anchorer is Enquirer but she got it wrong.

Marakash was easily one of the most intelligent people in the city and an accomplished Mage in her own right. But she was also a simple women, with simple interests. Stacy, an endearing sleeper who Marakash befriended years earlier always had her ear to the ground and was often a great source of information for Marakash. Especially when it came to staying informed about the social climate of Edmonton.

Re: Prelude: Prodigy - The Alarm Goes Off by 94800 Aether (GM)

"Prodigy, what is that you have."

Marakash stares at Prodigy with a serious look.

"What do you have Prodigy, show it to me. You know you can't hide things from me." She holds out her hand.

Re: Prelude: Prodigy - The Alarm Goes Off by 113227 Prodigy

She was shocked that her mother was so demanding at seeing what she had in her pocket. What ever it was it must be strong enough to get her attention.  Looking at her mother. "It was a gift from someone. slowing pulling it out and making sure she was able to deal with the fact that she went to see a stranger without telling her mother.

"Mr. Gone said it was left for me at his shop.

Re: Prelude: Prodigy - The Alarm Goes Off by 94800 Aether (GM)

Marakash's eyes widen as she stares at it. She takes if from Prodigy, handling it liberally.

"This looks familiar, but I can not seem to place it."

"I can tell you this Habibti, you have a treasure here from out of time."

She looks it over and holds it in her hand for a second or two. "I would say about thirty five years."

She pulls a hand away and studies it and then looks to Prodigy. "Ars Vis, Prodigy."

She places it back in her palm, and Prodigy can see a pulse of prime come off the watch as it activates. The hands of the watch split and move at ever so slightly different rates.

"Prodigy, this watch shows you time. Time as it truly is, not restricted by our relative location."

Marakash had a knack for simplifying otherwise complicated concepts.

When the watch was back in her hands and she could feel it pulse she looked at it a bit more closely. "I don't know why someone would leave it for me.  I don't know Mr. Gone but he seemed to be a nice man.

He owns a clock shop downtown.  Have you ever been there before, mother?

Once they were in the car she started to drive off in the direction her mother needed to be let off, plus she wanted to stop at a certain location to thank someone.  Or at lease to find out who they are.

About 10 minutes away from Prodigy's destination the watch starts up and some of the dials start moving about. It happens for only a few moments and then goes back to normal.

A strong sense of deja vu washes over Prodigy.

"Prodigy, have we been to this clinic before? I am fairly certain I have been to this clinic before, but I can not recall when.

So odd."

Chapter One - Omnisia
"...b ...a  ...c ...k ...a n d   l a stly please stand still for a few minutes, you may have a bit of dizziness and you won't know where you are." the voice fades, beginning very slow at first, and low in tone, then returning to normal.

Ezra, Prodigy, Christine and Herbert are standing on a metal platform, cold and a bit damp. Unsure of where they are. Beneath the platform is an expansive body of clear dark water. Through the water they can see faint lighting.

Overhead and on either side of the platform is a large metal ring that connects down near the water. Off of the ring runs insulated pipes and hoses covered with frost and ice.

The entire area appears to be one large sphere made of metal and stone with a few entrance and exits.

"Just breath slowly and your memory will return...short term at least."

The voice is given a face as all four see a man walk out from behind a white wall. "Yes, well, that was fun.

Uhm, yes, sorry, your memory.

The vortex has a few side effects, many of which are actually beneficial, all of which are fascinating." he pushes his glasses up onto his nose. "You are experiencing Omnisia, that is what I call it..You see the residual energy in the neuron-pathways left behind by temporary yet substantial nuero-activity..." he is cut off by another man off to everyones left.

"Doctor, must you?" the smartly dressed man says.

"My friends, please, step down." he motions for all four to join him on the large cement area in front of the platform. He holds several towels and offers one first to Christine.
