Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off
The smell of marijuana was a strong undertone in the smoke, accented by overtones of dried fruit.

"Jacob." he takes another drag "Thats my name."

"Tell me Herbert, why does Pickering’s Moon go about in reverse orbit?"
he puts the cigarette to his lips.

"There are nipples on your chests sir;" he says through a cloud of smoke."...when do you expect you'll need to breast feed?"

"And what, the fuck, is up with Heisenberg’s Law?" as he swears Herbert becomes aware of a subtle British accent that he hadn't noticed prior.

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off
Herbert contemplates.  "Kay. Jacob."

He closes the window a bit before taking the owl out of his pocket and sitting on the arm of the sofa.  "Right, look, I have no idea what's going on here and I'm sorta freaking out. You just come out of nowhere and I'm cool with that because that sort of shit is like my recipe for heaven or whatever but this is so far from Kansas we're not even in Oz anymore. I have questions but I'm not even going to ask right now."

He frowns at Jacob and wraps his hands protectively around Calcifer. "You have nipples too, you know!"

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off
"Yes, frightfully disturbing at first, but I've learned to worship them." Jacob says in response to the comment about his nipples.

"Do you ever think about where all of this confusion, all of this discord, where all of it came from fnord?"

Jacob stood from the couch and put out his 'cigarette'. "Order, probability..." from behind his bow tie he pulls a small silver device. Pauses for second, looks over into the kitchen for a second, and then back to Herbert. "..they are keeping you from doing things like th..." his word is cut off as Jacob and all the air around him suddenly vanish with a subtle snapping sound and a low thump as the vacuum is quickly filled.

A moment later Jacob pops back into the room where he had vanished from, holding the same bag of hot dog buns from before. He places the buns on the table and sits back down on the couch. "So, about Heisenberg’s Law..." Just then, Herbert hears a knock at the door.

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off
Herbert remains silent during the whole ordeal, until the knock on the door brings him out of the thoughts that had him trapped. He sits Calcifer on his shoulder and stands up simultaneously. He walks toward the door slowly, turning to walk backwards so he can talk and face the orangutan in case something else peculiar happens.

"Do I ever think about it? Welcome to my life, Jacob. I can't stop thinking about randomness. It's like some stupid rotting pudding stuck up here," he taps his forehead on the right side. "I can't explain how badly I need to figure this stuff out, to understand it."

He pauses with his hand on the door. "This could be my landlady or a neighbor asking about the smell. Can you hide?"

He quickly throws his hands up at chest level, palms forward, eyes wide. "But don't leave!"

The idea that this was a mental break-down from his "career" or some drug was laced into his drink last night had crossed his mind, certainly, but he didn't want this fantastic opportunity to just vanish.

"Hi", Christine said as someone spoke behind the door. She looked at Jacob, wondering if he would say something, since she didn't even know why they were here or what they were about to talk about with the one living here.

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off
Jacob from the hall saunters past Herbert into his kitchen and grabs the original bag of Hot Dog Buns, leaving Christine in the hall. Jacob from the living room walks out into view and approaches Herbert. Passing the Jacob from the hall he nods his head "Evening Jacob..."

The Jacob from the hall nods back "Jacob." as he takes out the small silver object and again taps one end sucking him into a single point and vanishing from the kitchen with a pop.

The Jacob remaining walks up to Christine and offers her his hand, "would you care to join us?"

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off
Herbert frowns at the new Jacob as the door is shoved open. "Hey!"  His grip on the door handle tightens, his teeth grind and he forces a deep breath through his nose.

"Listen, you. Jacob. I don't think I can deal with having another guest at this moment, you are brain-numbing as it is."  He grabs the buns, shoves them out the door at the strange woman and shuts the door.  He opens the door again, says, "Sorry, I'm sure you are nice and all, it's nothing personal," and shuts it again.

"It's not polite," he says as he turns to the orangutan. "To invite people into a guy's territory without his permission."

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off
Christine catches the buns being shoved at her but looks too surprised to answer anything before the door is shut. When the door suddenly opens again she managed to say: "I'm sorry, I thought you knew about this visit." Then the door slammed shut again, leaving Christine out of the apartment again.

OOC: is Jacob inside the apartment or outside with Christine? I'm not certain.

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off
Herbert stands at the door frowning at the floor. He sighs, rolls his head around on his shoulders and then opens the door again.

"Shut the door behind you," he says as he makes his way into the kitchen.  He grabs a glass and turns the tap on full to fill it, splashing along the back of the sink.

"Thank you very much. I apologize if we are disturbing you, I am more or less along for the ride it seems. I gather you have met Jacob before?" Christine carefully closes the door and then waits to be invited into the main part of the suite.

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off
"Mrrph," says Herbert as he guzzles the water. He seems not to care about the water on the counter any more than the water dribbling onto his shirt.

He sets the glass rather gingerly down on the counter and wipes his chin off on his owl-free shoulder. "Long time friends. Just met this morning."

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off
Herbet's phones vibrates a few times.

Seconds later the intercom goes off, BBbbZzzzzzz.

Herbert, keeping a watchful eye on Jacob, makes his way over to the wall and holds down a button. "Yeah?"

"Oh, hey dude! uh, I've got a pizza here for a Hubert Cumins? I think it's a vegetarian." Just as Herbert is about to take his finger off the button, the voice adds "Oh, and the bananas, I've got those too."

Jacob straightens and half points at the wall. "Ahh, that will be our transport."

Jacob slowly waddles toward Herbert. "And a vegetarian pizza," he says it's name as if it was foreign to him. "is that to your liking?" Jacob doesn't wait for an answer. "Herbert, events are about to transpire, certain chance encounters, if you will; and it is unknown why they are happening, or why they ended the way they did. These events will cause the suffering of many; however we, right now, are in a position to make a difference. You do not know this, yet, but we trust one another. So I ask you, and Calcifer; take this one chance and come with me. Help us discover the darkness that threatens to remove all that makes this universe vibrant and alive."

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off
Herbert scratches the owl under its chin, checking the buzzing phone to read the message. He continues reading as he answers the buzzer. When Jacob starts talking Herbert gives his full attention, putting the phone in his pocket and moving Calcifer into a cradle in his arms.

He thinks through what to say very carefully before he answers. Cause suffering? How does he know? Inevitable, however. Chance encounters. Unknowns to be known. Trusting Orange-Ball-of-Enigma. Keeping the Universe something or other. Wait...Calcifer?

A quizzical look at the tiny owl in his arms, a glance at the strange woman in his home, a rumble in his tummy. "Well. How long would this all take, anyway? I have a...thing. In a few hours. Maybe?"

Jacob smiles at Herbert's question and slowly makes his way to the door. "I guarantee, you will be able to satisfy prior commitments."

"Jacob, what has happened to my co-worker, John; is he alright?"

"John is safe, I can take you to him now if you would like.

What do you say Herbert? "

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off
Jacob thanks Herbert and is the first to leave. After the apartment is locked up Jacob allows Herbert to lead them out of the building.

Just outside the building, a few meters from the entrance, the group sees a bright yellow smart-car, parking along the curb.

Perched on top, in the asana pose, is a red haired individual, apparently meditating.

"Stephen, are we ready to depart?" Jacob says.

Stephen's eyes pop open and he jumps down with very little difficulty. "Absolutely, is this everyone? I've got John inside."

"Yes, I believe we are ready to go" Jacob walks around and opens the passenger side door and gestures for everyone to get it.

Herbert frowns at the empty passenger seat. "That doesn't look like a vegetarian pizza is in there. If you are trying to kidnap me for nefarious purposes I should warn you: I am a highly trained kung fu master. And you won't get me to touch your john."

With a glower at the strange man, Herbert takes a seat in the car. He places his owl on his lap.

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off
As Herbert steps into the car he is suddenly aware that the car was much larger, on the inside. Something in the back of his mind tells him he may have noticed before getting in, but for some reason convinced himself otherwise.

First Level

Looking toward the back of the car he sees a rather nervous man sitting on a bench seat on the right side of the car. He has a terrified, yet medicated look on his face. Across from him on another bench seat was a large white pizza box. Further back Herbert notices a small set of spiral stairs going up to what might be a second level to the vehicle.

"If you will move back Herbert I believe you will find the pizza that was mentioned." Herbert stands motioning for Christine to enter the car as well. She stands at the door looking in with a confused look.

Stephen hops in to the driver seat and starts up what sounds like an augmented ether-engine. (Only a character having met a Son of Ether with one, or having seen one, would know what it's like. They are fairly common.)

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off
Herbert makes his way to the pizza box before Jacob announces it. Placing the owl on the back of the seat, he plops down unceremoniously and starts to chow down with the box on his lap. His lanky legs stretch out into the aisle. He chews an impressively large mouthful and contemplates the nervous man, making no show of covering his staring.

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off
Jacob gets in, followed by Christine, and Jacob chooses a seat opposite Herbert.

"Okay! And away we go!" Stephen shifts the vehicle into gear and takes off down the street; people and vehicles outside of car are seen to move very slowly, but the movement from inside the car indicates rapid speed.

"We will need to drop off" Jacob appears to forget the mortal's name momentarily "John. Christine, John will need, assistance, being reintegrated. Are you able to stay with him?"

"Yes, I can do that." Christine looks to John with sympathy.

The vehicle stops in front of a tall apartment complex and Christine helps John out. After a brief conversation Jacob says goodbye and gets back in the car. "Proceed to the next stop Stephen, we should arrive in..." "3.67 minutes!" Stephen cuts him off. "Yes, alright."

The car takes off again, heading in the direction of Whyte Avenue.

"We're making great time!" Stephen says, "only a 0.1 variance!" the car screeches down the street, increasing speed slightly. "5, 4, 3..." As it turns a corner the world outside comes to a sudden stop, causing little or no change in momentum inside the car. "2! Ahhhh! So close."
Outside the car, stands a tall imposing man, with a grim look on his face. The occasional breeze moves his shoulder length white hair, and very little of his eyes can be seen through his dark round sunglasses. The wind also plays with his full-length coat, despite being fastened in many places with straps and buckles. Next to the man stands a shorter man, dressed in business casual wear, and despite his clear attempts at conversation doesn't have the attention of the taller man.

The taller man walks up to the car and bends down to peer into the drivers window.

A smile splits his angsty expression, "Jacob! it is great to see ya!" the man speaks in a raspy voice, with just a hint of a European accent. "Hello, Cagliostro," "Count! Cagliostro..." The man corrects him, still brimming with delight. "...it is good to see you as well." The man wastes no more time with pleasantries, "I've found the young lad you were looking for." He glances over at the man outside, who stands impatient and inquisitive. "And a bloody absent bugger he is too." he says under his breath. Cagliostro turns and stands to his full height, facing the other man. He loses his sunny disposition. "Right, into the car little fella, this is where I leave you." The man, apparently intimidated by Cagliostro, makes his way around and gets in.

"Wow, this is awesome!" Tome chooses a seat toward the back, introducing himself as he goes. "Driver, hi, how are ya. Hello hi, I'm Tome. Chimpansee, yes...very nice. Alright; and sitting down. Smart-car, bigger on the inside...right. Well this is all pretty great!" He smiles at everyone present, including Jacob. Tome appears to be having a hard time accepting everything that is going on, but it's also fairly clear that he isn't putting much effort into it.

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off
Herbert stops staring at the nervous man and instead inspects his next slice of pizza. Seemingly satisfied with the toppings, or whatever it is he was looking for, he takes a bite. Before he can even finish chewing that bite he puts the slice in his mouth again - this time to hold it. Wiping the grease off his hands he searches through a few pockets before finding his phone. He checks for messages. Switching from left leg over right to right leg over left and back again he tries to get comfortable. Ripping the pizza out of his mouth with one hand he continues to check his phone, chewing noisily. Switches legs back again. Not satisfied with having to keep the pizza box from falling again he places it on the floor. Taps his right foot in the air methodically. He shakes his head to try to get the hair out of his eyes. Gives up and uses the pizza-laden hand to brush the offending strand behind his ear. Comfort still sought after, he tries to reposition his entire body, standing partially up and adjusting his pants and jacket before sitting again. Takes another bite of pizza and puts his phone in a different pocket. Leans back and takes another look around the strange vehicle. Brushes his hair out of his face. Adjusts his jacket. Raises an eyebrow quizzically at John's choice in shoes. Indicates his disapproval silently with Jacob. Munches more pizza. Folds his legs under himself. Takes Calcifer down and nuzzles him gently on the beak, rubbing his head with one finger. Finishes his pizza. Wipes his mouth on his sleeve. Nods absently in valediction as Christine and John exit. Watches out the window curiously. Shakes his head. Brushes his hair out of his face. Admires the coat of the white-haired man. Adjusts his own coat. Stretches his legs out into the aisle again. Picks a feather off his arm. Lets Calcifer climb into a pocket inside his jacket. Watches Tome's entrance without expression. I wish the pizza weren't on the floor. Fiddles with a button-hole.

Re: Prelude: Herbert - The Alarm Goes Off
"Right, on to the next location." Jacob says to Stephen.

As the car begins to drive off the world outside slows back down to a crawl.

The trip lasts only a few minutes, but covers nearly 40 city blocks.

The car screeches around a corner and stops suddenly in front of an auto-body shop.

Out walks a middle-aged women, with bold facial features, long black hair, and strong posture that suggests accustomed authority. Her complexion and dress would suggests Middle-Eastern decent.

Behind her follows an Orangutan in a bow tie, looking remarkably like Jacob. The primate only steps out of the doorway a foot before his figure and the area around him get increasingly dark, and suddenly he vanishes with a loud snapping sound followed by a low thump as the vacuum is quickly filled.

The women walks around the vehicle and gets into the passenger side. "Oh yes, very wonderful." She says and she looks around the car. She eyes Jacob and moves closer to him, sitting a few feet away. "You were correct sir, I am certainly interested in what you have to show me. But first I must see Prodigy."
"Absolutely Mam, we are heading there immediately." Jacob replies.
