It's funny, I find that people that try to channel my mind over RPOL are often wrong but those that try in person are often right. I must have a lousy poker face or something. And I mean REALLY lousy. How someone can determine that the pharaoh's mummy stumbling towards them was actually the king under a mind control spell by my facial expressions is beyond me. Man.. that sounds like a fun game! Maybe your group knows you so well that they can just guess by a certain glint they see in your eyes whether the enemy is real or if it's some kind of trick!

Also, there were some mind reading a few days back when I had to pick a new class, if I remember correctly >_>

Just for the sake of it, I'd guess that there'd be a passageway somewhere in the abandoned fortress that was quite as abandoned as the fortress itself and quite ran over by a race of monsters of some description. I'd wager that this fortress is dwarven(ish?) in nature and that the passage would be connected straight to Azul Irkul!

I will neither confirm nor deny suspicions of said tunnel or alleged decrepit Dwarven fortress. Time will tell =P

And yes, the character creation there was some, but not in the game heh.

As for my players IRL, that's probably the case seeing as I've known them all the better part of a decade. But it wasn't even that they guessed that the mummy was a friend, they guessed that it was both the king, and that he was mind controlled the second they saw him. This coming from a group of players who's sole joy in life is to mercilessly slaughter every single enemy I lay before them with brutal efficiency.

In reply to DM Visceri (msg # 27):

Maybe there was a description of the mummy that somehow reminded them of the king? It is pretty cool how they can guess just like that, although I can only imagine how difficult it would be to try and give them unexpected encounters...

That being said, I'm ever so grateful for people that take up the GM mantle coz the amount of time they put into it! Man.

My GM for WFRP IRL only does the session once a month because, apparently, we give her headaches after every session, going off on tangents and just, generally not going where she wants us to go. But, ya know, that's OUR job :p

Admittedly, it can be a pain here and there but the rewards outweigh the pain. My games are my babies since I always make them up from scratch. There is an interesting fact about my games that will come to light soon that one or two of you will get the significance of but I wouldn't spoil the fun yet.

As for players not following the DM's railroading, it's only polite that eventually the group tries to conform to the story at hand, assuming it's not a sandbox game. Think about it, why would you want to miss out on the fun things a DM has prepared for stuff they either didn't care about or have to make up spur of the moment? I try not to railroad TOO much but I like there to be a story that is obviously able to be followed.

Re: OOC Discussion

I've never actually roleplayed face-to-face, though I've been doing PBP and real-time chat roleplay for about twelve years. I think it's probably easier to surprise and amuse your players with PBP, but I'm sure there are other qualities that you get in face-to-face RP that can't be replicated through other mediums.

As for the essay, I had to choose a relatively contemporary article and relate it to some sociologists we've been studying this semester. I chose an article on the role of social media in the Arab Spring and the London Riots. Quite an interesting topic... it's a shame most of my thought on the subject took place during a semi-delusional state of half-sleep.

Re: OOC Discussion

Well the one benefit of face-to-face RP that I always enjoy, is quick combat heh. Nothing like taking 5 minutes to kill a group of goblins rather than 5 days. The Dance of the Dead game I also run that Gren and Strange are in started as a IRL game with me and two friends and when one went off to the Navy, we moved it to here. In the 2 months we played it IRL, we blasted through 7 levels, 3 dungeons, and a boatload of story. In the year since it's been moved to RPOL, the group has gained 1 level and took 3 months to conquer a dungeon. I have a feeling that it will be the first, and last, dungeon I play in that manner. Again, another thing that RPOL has no real answer for which makes me sad. I oh so love dungeons and traps after all.

Re: OOC Discussion

Well, currently the game is quite linear but our GM usually gave each character a day in each town we had come across to do whatever we want. However, the choice we often take is something she hasn't prepared or something completely out of the blue for her. I think that's the source of her headache. A player will take 5 minutes going down from his room to grab breakfast coz he'll do whatever it takes to get the breakfast for free, for example. Another player will go to a temple of Mor to pick up random herbs, offending the priests, etc. We'll be there when the actual event happens but before then the group completely splits off most of the times. Also, doesn't help that this is her first time GMing.

Also, I know what you mean re the speed of the game! We had no dungeon crawl yet but our usual combat lasts half an hour or so because we're all quite new and learning. I would very much love to see how traps work in real life games. Do the rogue just naturally sense something's up ever now and then or do the party just continuously check for trap every few meters or so?

Playing online has an advantage of rping, I think. IRL, I tend to be quite shy so I play character that doesn't say much. Also, I don't speak English quite as fluently (or correctly) as I'd like so that doesn't help =/ I think, the storytelling opportunities in online rp can be well worth the wait for events to move along :)

And, Kass, that essay sounds interesting and relevant to the current society. I've never heard of the Arab Spring but I do know bits and pieces about the London Riot (though mostly media fed garbage). All the best with it! :)

Re: OOC Discussion

The Arab Spring refers to the recent revolutions/protests in Egypt, Lybia and Tunisia. Syria is following along the same theme, it seems... many claim that social media such as Facebook and Twitter were instrumental in these revolutions' success.

Anyway, I've written that essay and handed it in, so I don't wanna think about that too much, haha.

I also like the storytelling aspect of roleplaying online, even though my posts have been rather short and lacking in description lately, I think it's much easier to create a coherent and consistent character in writing than I'd imagine it would be in real time.

Hahah of course! But now I might go and do a bit of reading on Arab Spring myself. Sounds like something a friend might be interested in.

You said you've done some real time chat role play before. Wouldn't that be similar, in terms of thinking thinking on your feet and whatnot? The only consistency my char has in that RL game is her determined desire not to speak and slight racist behaviour (wood elves in WFRP are xenophobic...)

Re: OOC Discussion

Well, yes real-time chat RP is more spur-of-the-moment, but you've got logs to look back on and can see exactly what your character said and did last session, so it's much easier to remember quirks and such, as well as include them in your description without it seeming odd. Often my real-time RPs were based off PBP RPs where I already had an established character, too, so that made things easier.

Re: OOC Discussion

Well the rogue in my RL parties always seems to get hit by the first trap and then check every single door and room form there on out because he's scared. Ever since I ran this one friend of mine through a Tomb of Horros game (if you're unfamiliar, the unofficial motto of the game is "You will die. A lot. To stupid shit.") he's been super suspicious of anything I do. I like to create a lot of really intricate traps with false triggers, double traps, etc. While they're a little difficult to pull off in PBP, I did manage to kill a rogue because of the cause of one rather simple trap in my other game I play. Gren and Strange can attest to that haha.

As for the whole IRL vs PBP or real-time debate, my 2 cents are that when you're IRL, the game moves faster but the RP suffers and vice versa when you're on PBP. I personally am a huge story junkie so PBP affords me a better opportunity to let some of the details and plot intricacies that might be typically left out to find a place. Plus, I find my characters really come alive when I can take a moment to judge how each would respond, keeping with the theme of consistency.

Re: OOC Discussion

I'll eventually weigh in with a legitimate response, but in brief... I agree that combat and dungeons are bawlz on RPOL but that it tends to breed vastly superior character representation and development, which IMHO makes it totally worthwhile.

I play 4e IRL with a LAN/MapTool/custom framework setup at my buddy's place and it's pure combat, no RP, because the dullard WotC target market can't handle it, but it's still a ton of fun.  I get my write on via fiction and RP here on RPOL.

Good times.

4e?! *HISS! BOO!* =P

Agreed though, while there have been situations where combat is easy and entertaining (see the scenarios where all players post 1-2 times a day and finish a boss encounter in 3 days) but the all too familiar dredge is the bane of my existence (see the scenarios where 2 people don't post for 3 days, forcing me to NPC them finally, then a different 2 people don't post for 3 days and a fight consisting of 3 measly mobs lasts close to 2 weeks).

I bitch regularly, have no doubt.

I think RPOL combat should be up to the DM to resolve based on pre-submitted basic strategies and such, because it is most certainly NOT fun at RPOL pace.

Re: OOC Discussion

The problem is, of course, that DND is primarily designed with combat in mind, so we should theoretically be using something else if we plan to emphasize RP, like maybe the oWoD storyteller system. But it's all good.

There's a price for everything, and pace is the price here.  It's totally worth it if you get strong characters and plot.

Well, in a way, and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong those of you who have played through my combats, I kind of give a resolution based on the player's intents and my ideas of what the combat would look like. So it's kind of a hybrid of doing that while still allowing players a hand in it instead of just leaving it up to fate. Cause you never know when a player will pull something totally imaginative and unique out of their hat and make an encounter completely different.

Re: OOC Discussion

Well, I kind of feel the same, though if the players are capable of resolving rounds of combat relatively quickly (as they have been so far, in this game, as far as I can tell), it's better to leave combat to the player, as the DM could easily misinterpret a character's well... character, and do something that the player may not agree with, and that kind of thing can lead to tears... so, better avoided when possible, in my opinion.

I think I know what you mean about the toys... I'm expecting a lot of Warhammer figurines for Christmas and we don't even have the space for what we currently have. One of the major downside of the holiday season >_>

I think I'm with Tevlin on that one. I've never been a huge kid person but I sure do love me some good legos. Those things are fun no matter HOW old you are.

And I'll say this just as a heads up: On the 21st, I will be heading out of town to visit family and won't be back until late the 26th. The week after that I will have my best mate who has been away in the Navy for 7 months in town so posting will be sporadic and likely later at night. I should be able to check my computer through the entirety of the time I mentioned with the exception of Christmas itself, of course, so those that can post, I will keep you afloat. Those that cannot, have a very happy and safe holiday!

This thing is brutal.  I feel like a sissy, because I know it's totally just the command cold, but MAN is it knocking me on my behind.

You ever see that NyQuil commercial?  I'm totally having a Man Cold.  It's hilarious; I dealt with a sprained back, a partial patella dislocation (different events), dislocating all five of my toes on one foot at once, various wounds while working security, handled all of it with more poise and dignity than this irritating little bug.  It has reduced me to a sniveling wretch.

By the by, have we already given out loot (I assumed Kass already had the rapier, but wasn't sure about the potions)?

If so, who got what? I wanted the rapier and two potions; Shield of Faith and Sanctuary. If there's a spare Cure Light Wounds potion going I'd happily claim that, too. :P

Also, regarding the 10 longswords, can we retcon that we sold those back in town or donated them to the town guard or something? I don't think any of us are really prepared to carry around a bunch of swords...

Re: OOC Discussion

It is hard for me to play dumb characters.  Of course playing a character smarter than you are is probably harder.  If one or more of you are playing smarter characters here are some ideas about our current situation:

There is something out there that has appeared at a distance several times watching us.  Now it is scratching at the door then disappearing.  It has had several times to just charge in and attack, but hasn't.  Either it is trying to get us to split up so it can attack us one at a time, or it is trying to warn/ward us off.  Either way it suggests cunning and it is likely not just some ordinary animal.

Of course, my character is too dumb to think of any of this himself so...he's just going to sit there picking ham fat out of his beard and worrying about Yeti.  If it is a bear, Gren is all for trapping and eating it.  He will be against burnign it.  A nice warm bear skin would do marvels in this weather.

Well, Kass has 18 INT but I'm dumb as a short plank (or however the saying goes) so, though I had considered that I'm not sure how exactly to approach the situation. At the moment, she's just kind of following the group's lead at the moment, though she may speak up if there's any indecision about going out into the snow.

I would've thought, though, that being able to 'read' a creature's actions like this would come from a high wisdom score (sense motive)?

It depends what course of acton you're trying to pursue. If you're trying to sense motive or track it like you're trying, wisdom is the key. if you're actually trying to discern something about the monster (generally have to know what it is or see it), that's where your int comes into play. Of course, just general ideas and stuff can be loosely based on intellect and hey, even a blind squirrel gets a nut every now and then so just because your character is "dumb," doesn't mean they can't have a good idea from time to time.

Ooooooh. Oh. So, the thing, whatever it is, might be IN the castle with us? I'm like, a thousand times more scared now x.x Thanks for the diagram, that does help a ton.

I vote up the stairs because then we can fling the beastie off the castle tower, when we inevitably get cornered by it and can't defeat it. Alternatively, we could go either way and set my trap up at the entrance.

EDIT: Even given a diagram I apparently can't understand what's going on. Nevermind... Still, I vote trapping whichever entrance we leave behind us.

On another note, why is the monster on a sled? Or are they wheels? Or is it like, a giant slug/snake/worm thing with claws and.. two bodies?

And I never said it was on a sled or anything. Just that it looked like that. It could also look like someone's feet dragging if that helps you to visualize it.

Re: OOC Discussion

Santa Claws! Like the evil Santa from Futurama! It certainly fits with the holiday theme :D

So, where should we go? Further into the fortress or up? I don't suggest going out into the blizzard. That would be a death sentence... Judging from the creature's ability to just disappear without leaving any track or indication where they might have been, I'm guessing they can do more than just become invisible. Although, the creature seemed to leave tracks in front of the room. Why is that? Gren mentioned that it's trying to either warn/ward us away or its trying to split us up and kill us one at a time.

A question arise from that deduction. Why now? Tevlin and Lyria had been camping in that place for 3 days and, presumably, never seen a thing or been attacked. Attacking when there were only two people (or one, when the other was gathering food) would've been much easier than having to do these diverting tactic, surely? Alternatively, if its goal was to warn/ward us away, why not do it sooner?

What I think might also be interesting to note is that the room that the group occupied, until just recently, contained a fire and was considerably warm. Could it be that it can only perform its disappearing act in the snow/cold weather? If so, I'd go deeper into the fortress where there won't be any snow/blizzard. I'm thinking that going up will lead to the ramparts where we will be equally buffeted by the blizzard than if we were to just go outside.

What do you guys think?

Well, it not attacking you guys while you were already there suggests that whatever it is is stalking our group. Eh?  If they can move a greater distance, you don't know the distance so you can't make any assumptions on the basis of the amount they moved in the first round.  Maybe they only WANTED to make a partial move, for example.

I can indeed see the map.  Also, Strange is a gargoyle; they walk 40' and fly 60', so it really depends on what he's doing.

At this point those of us in the other room don't really know what's going on with Gren and Lyria, but once we find them we can assist.  I think given that Gren called out for us it wouldn't be too difficult for us to find them. :P

Baw, your responses sadden me. It's my favorite book series and the reason I started DMing. I agree there are a metric ton of characters but that's what I love about it. The world is so utterly fleshed out that it could really exist like a real world. That level of depth is incredible to me as a reader and world-builder.

Re: OOC Discussion

Hm... totally unrelated but I'd just like to moan about something that's happening in another game here... sorry if anyone is offended by this short rant.

Our party decided to split up into two groups, one to go do some sneaky stuff in a swamp (that was provided by the GM but wasn't an appropriate task for 8 people, especially when 2 of them are mounted), and another to do something else out of the swamp (not a task provided by the GM but approved by him).

Rather than making something interesting happen with the group not going into the swamp, the GM has decided that our ploy, for no discernible reason, is a spectacular failure. At least so far. And then, to top it off, he's making us do things that we haven't even said we wanted to do yet, like, it's suggested as an idea and then he just says 'Well, now that you've done that this is the situation'. That kind of annoys me.

Grr. I know GMing is an art and not an easy one to master, but sometimes it feels like people make so little effort. I suppose I should be grateful that he has some interest in keeping the game moving, at least.

/rant.

Re: OOC Discussion

Pandering noted and filed into the gear distribution center.

I have to agree that DMing really is as much about telling a story as it is about social and managerial skills. 90% of the game is keeping the people you're bringing along for the ride happy. If your players aren't happy, they will make sure you aren't happy. While I like it when my players follow my ;cough; subtle ;cough; nudges down the path of the main story line, there are times when a random whim sends them in a completely different direction and a lot of times, those little asides end up being some of my favorite parts of the game. For instance, earlier in this campaign, when Strange decided to stay at the Temple of Iomedae instead of going with the rest of the group, I was initially a tad annoyed but it led to some of the funniest exchanges I've had on RPOL between him and Gilford, the slow guard. Basically, as long as it isn't going to completely destroy your world or do something that is just absurd, I tend to entertain player ideas (don't let it get to your heads. I have a tarrasque laying around here somewhere afterall =P)

Oh and Lyria, the book that just came out is the last in the series. It is fin.

Re: OOC Discussion

I think that's one things that a lot of DMs don't do right. If you have reservations or outright conflict with a character concept but like the player, just ask them if they wouldn't mind playing something else. Most of them will but even if they don't want to, it's better to pass on them for a different person whose character will fit into your world than trying to jam one that won't in. It's like trying to fit a puzzle piece into the wrong hole. It might be able to stick but nothing else will fit with it.

And who says it's loot? >:)

And yes, 14 books is a lot, especially since each book has an innumerable page count.

That includes the prequel but still, a stupid amount.

EDIT: On a side note, this game's post-rate has sped up that it's dangerously close to overtaking my other game. Odd that the current batch of adventurers there took over at ~700 posts and are now at 2246 and this game started from scratch around the time they took over and is at 1993. Just a fun observation.

I suppose when read a book at a time, it might not be too bad. I believe 100,000 words is average for a normal novel but fantasy books tend to go far above that. Ahh my poor, poor bookcase will not be able to withstand the sheer volume of the written word! If I was to start reading, which would should I start with? The prologue or book 1, finish the series, then the prologue?

Originally I picked up WoT BECAUSE of the length. I got -so- sick of running out of story by page 400. Eeesh. I prefer 700-900 pages. A good Trilogy to Quintet I find is best. I don't mind 'sequels' but yea, I do adore the wrap ups at the end of some books. But WoT sure seemed to never properly wrap up books from what I remember. There wasn't a satisfied feeling at each books end from what I recall, and by the fourth or fifth cliff-hanger....
It gets tedious, y'know?

I actually don't mind the 7 books in HP because each book has its own ending. Three seems the easiest to work for though, in terms of pacing.

Oh wait. I lied. I've read 15 books series before. Those trilogies were actually 4 books series. And the last is 7 books series. Oops... Well, that makes the WoT looks somewhat more manageable :)

My advice, start reading and stop when it seems like it's too much. then come back to it in a month or two and read another. If you're like me, you'll be surprised how much you miss reading it after you come back to it.

I may be wrong, but I believe most of our party has it. I do, Strange does (I think?) I think Tevlin does, and I would not be surprised if Gren does. Should I cast my 1/day darkness spell? And if I do, where do you want me to cast it?

The rooms with the snow in them offer illumination from the sky outside since the ceilings are gone or partially gone so you can assume those without darkvision can see fine. The rooms with no snow, however, are dim light and are subject to the 20% miss chance for those who don't have it.

The ground is made of old stone.

Dancing lights should still be active.

We need to start knocking these things around or we're going to be in a lot of trouble.  Tevlin really is too low-level to be spec'd for dealing a lot of damage.  I can do Elemental Ray like 9 times per day, so I'm not apt to run out of d4+1 damage-dealers, and I can cast Magic Missile a few times, but low-level casters mostly suck in combat :(

Elemental Bloodline and stupid-high Charisma for the win!

Yeah, I can spam elemental ray, but I have to actually hit with it in order for it to do anything and it doesn't do a TON of damage.  It's kind of like having Eldritch Blast as a Sorcerer, though; it keeps me able to do something, and from a safe distance, pretty much throughout combat.

Yeah, DM and I discussed the attacks during character creation.  I can make multiple attacks as a full round action, but each consecutive one takes a -5.  The rulebook says I should be able to make all 3 attacks (claw x 2 + bite) at full BAB but that was one of the things we decided was too OP for me to have at level 1. :P

Re: OOC Discussion

Copied straight from the Core rule book.:
quote:
Natural Attacks: Attacks made with natural weapons,
such as claws and bites, are melee attacks that can be made
against any creature within your reach (usually 5 feet).
These attacks are made using your full attack bonus and
deal an amount of damage that depends on their type (plus
your Strength modifier, as normal). You do not receive
additional natural attacks for a high base attack bonus.
Instead, you receive additional attack rolls for multiple
limb and body parts capable of making the attack (as noted
by the race or ability that grants the attacks). If you possess
only one natural attack (such as a bite—two claw attacks do
not qualify), you add 1–1/2 times your Strength bonus on
damage rolls made with that attack.
Some natural attacks are denoted as secondary natural
attacks, such as tails and wings. Attacks with secondary
natural attacks are made using your base attack bonus
minus 5. These attacks deal an amount of damage
depending on their type, but you only add half your
Strength modifier on damage rolls.

Based on those rules I should be able to make three attacks (two claws and a bite, all denoted primary) but at level one and even level 2 now that's way OP.  Instead I get multiple attacks but every attack after the first gets a -5, so when I actually get to a BAB of +5 secondary attacks are handled normally.  There's other bonuses I won't be getting until later levels too: higher DR, higher natural AC bonus, and of course the flying thing.  It's all part of the cost of lowering the ECL of crazy monster races. :P

Ah yes, the thing I was remembering was the strength modifier difference. My bad. :)

The thing is a natural attack user drops off later, right?

However, if you have your -5 BAB thing for consecutive attacks, it basically just means you're acting as though you have two attacks already. Right?

I'm intrigued to see how your character develops to be a 'better' Gargoyle... will we find a stonemason to fix you up? :P

That's what I thought.  The spell I am considering is Infernal Healing (the only healing spell on the sorcerer/wizard list that I have found).

Gren's mother is a full-blooded Ogre Chieftess with the ancestral blood of eldritch Giant's running through her veins.  As far as Gren and his mother know his father was also a full-blooded Ogre.  So how is it Gren is a Half-Ogre?  Turns out his father was a sorcerer who got his rocks off by using transmutation magic to alter his appearance and then went around mating with different species.
Considering Gren's heritage, I'm sure that some potential for evil exists in there some where.

- Plenty of plot hooks for you to find something interesting to do.  There is a main quest line but I dislike railroading so I'm not going to force it.
- Lots of other fun stuff.

If you've got any questions feel free to PM me here or send in my game linked above.  The last thing I want to do is steal games away from the DM here so if you're considering it but you're worried about overloading yourself then just stick with what you've got already.  The last thing I want is for someone to burn themselves out playing in too many games!

Oh, NOW you use Pathfinder!

But yeah, basically what he said, don't want anyone burning out here but check it out if you're looking for a new game. I was in it until the rest of the group up and disappeared and it was fun, Strange is a good DM, he'll treat you right and only try to kill you half as often as I do!

So I'm still a little confused.  In order to get through the pass do we have to go through the ruined fortress or is that just tangentially connected to the great hallway carved through the mountain?  Can we just go through the hall and come out on the other side of the pass to begin our descent or do we need to explore the ruins to find the way to the other side?

Well, you can see that the giant hallway is above and behind the fortress. How you want to try and get to it is your call. You can try leaving the fortress and climbing the mountain, seeing if going deeper into the fortress brings you to it, or whatever other ideas you come up with. Depending on what you try, I will have something waiting for you to act out!

Indeed, on the road again sounds good to me. I've been itching to get some writing done so since I'm getting the general consensus that the group wants to go through the fortress to try to find a way up to the mountain, I'll start hedging my bets on that. No, there's still a wall between you. Just below Lorelei is a wall - Lyria is standing in the doorway between those two rooms. I don't know if you could move and attack the non-mephit baddies in the same turn... I found a download for CSUAC, an old database of them though its nearly impossible to find. The other half was from the player who played Erasmus. If I could ever get my Dropbox to work, I'd share them with you. I also believe there is a site called rpgshare or something along those lines that has some sets available for download.

Re: OOC Discussion

So we have a problem. This game is a one post per two day model and recently, we've had people no posting for a week or more at a time. I see that people have logged in and seen the posts and that they need to post but either forget to do so or just don't for whatever reason. I would really hate to shut the game down due to inactivity but it's getting close to that point. I find it hard to justify bringing in new players at this point in the game due to how long they may have to wait to be introduced and that it would essentially be almost a new party with no attachments to the main story line.

So here's the deal, if you can't keep up with the posting rate, please let me know in a PM. Otherwise, this is a role call to see who all is looking at this. After 2 days, if to haven't replied here or in a PM, I will be NPCing your character and removing you from the game. Nothing personal but I'm not going to just Lethe game die if I can help it. The same goes for those of you are in my other game as well. I'll be posing a similar post there as well.

I fully confess to being one of those people who have read but not posted.  It happens in my games too and I have yet to find a good method of combatting it.

The only reason I haven't posted yet is because I was waiting to see what others are going to do, but I know that's not a good enough reason.  Besides, what if others are waiting to see what actions I'm taking?  It's a vicious cycle I tell ya!  :P

Re: OOC Discussion

I've tried to solve this problem in a game I'm running by just saying that I'll always put up a post on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. If I have to NPC the whole party to do it, I will, otherwise I take a lack of a post as equivalent to a post saying they do nothing.

That said, the game I'm running has very little combat in it.

Re: OOC Discussion

My advice for that problem is to just throw out a post detailing what you can do without hearing from other party members. Once they've posted, you can post again. Not posting at all does nothing to further the game though and that ends up killing the flow. I do agree that it is a vicious cycle but hopefully we can work through it by seeing if that's what everyone is waiting on.

Re: OOC Discussion

I did not get the stats for it because I was not planning on having Strange use it as a weapon.  He's just holding onto it until the party gets to Azul Irkul where he can hand it off to someone who might care.  While he doesn't trust the others in the party not to pawn it off at the first shop they find he most certainly won't mind handing it over to a dwarf.

One of the downsides to playing a living statue is the lack of inventory options.  I'm pretty much limited to what Strange can carry in his hands or mouth.  A statue would look fairly odd with clothing and bags hanging off of it.  Kind of ruins the surprise, when the statue suddenly comes to life and tries to bite your neck. :P

Good. The descriptor that comes after the / is what breaks through the DR, if anything.

DR 5/ magic would mean that all physical attacks deal 5 less damage
DR 5/ holy would mean all but holy spells or holy-modified attacks
DR 5/ bludgeoning means all physical attacks except those by bludgeoning weapons deal 5 less damage.
DR 5/ - means you're shit out of luck any way you look at it lol

This is a fight I have every day.  It is the most dire of battles.  I leave the couch to use the bathroom.  I return to find that my cat has stolen my spot.  I glare at him to get out of my spot.  He gives me wide, sad, adorable eyes.  I end up trying to sit around him.

So Kass and Lorelei, something happened a few rounds back that might help us in this fight.

quote:
Strange dropped the Dwarven hammer to free his second claw. As the hammer hit the ground, a dazzling light even stronger than the kind it had been letting out before burst forth, causing the creature to shy back for a moment, providing the perfect moment for Kass and Strange to strike home.

Might be worth trying the hammer as a distraction even if none of us can use it effectively as a weapon.

Moving right along! So you may notice that the coordinates at the top are ridiculously numbered but there is a reason for that. Since we're exploring the same area, I just added the actual room onto the map that we used for the last encounter so if, for whatever reason, you feel the need to run into the forge room at any time while exploring the church, you can do so and still be represented on the map. Aren't I just the most resourceful (lazy) DM ever?

On a different note, I just realized how close you guys have come to catching up to my other game in posts. You started something like 700 behind them and are, as of this post, only 12 behind. I blame you chatterboxes who talk in OOC all the time :P

Also, this is out of the blue but a combat question. Only if I was duel wielding, using a double weapon, or completely unarmed could I do two attacks with a full attack? Like I'm using only one 2hander, I can't forgo my move and hit twice correct?

I think the only way you could do it unarmed is if you had Improved Unarmed Strike.  With two weapons or a double-weapon you can make an extra attack with a full round action but you are severely hindered if you don't have the Two-Weapon Fighting feat and/or use a light weapon in your off-hand.

Yeah, I've read the rules of two weapon fighting. I was just curious if the same thing was possible to do with one weapon. I guess that's not possible until we hit the later levels and we get multiple attacks per round.

All you know is that your shadow seems to have come alive and wants to kill you. A very astute observation, by the by.

And in regards to this combat, I would like to try a different format than what we have been doing so far. I want to see how a split-initiative combat will work for us and then get your opinions at the end of the combat. Basically, if you beat the shadow's initiative, you are in Group 1 and act before they attack. If not, you are in Group 2 and post after. This can help keep things moving instead of waiting for every person every time as well as letting you really judge what you want your action to be after the baddies go. We'll see how it works out.

It looks like Dale's light caused the shadows.  You can draw a straight line between him, our companions and the shadows behind them.  Not sure why Nori's light hasn't caused any yet.  Is it weaker than Dale's?  So near the walls and each other, maybe there is no space for a shadow to fully manifest?  Maybe it's because it is the tower keeper's item?

Re: OOC Discussion

Alright, so you'll take the AoO from the first shadow, you'll need to roll for the reposition of Dale, and possibly gain another AoO from the second shadow. This could be a pretty devastating round for you.

quote:
Reposition

Source: Advanced Player's Guide.

You can attempt to reposition a foe to a different location as a standard action. You can only reposition an opponent that is no more than one size category larger than you. A reposition attempts to force a foe to move to a different position in relation to your location without doing any harm. If you do not have the Improved Reposition feat or a similar ability, attempting to reposition a foe provokes an attack of opportunity from the target of your maneuver. You cannot use this maneuver to move a foe into a space that is intrinsically dangerous, such as a pit or wall of fire. If your attack is successful, you may move your target 5 feet to a new location. For every 5 by which your attack exceeds your opponent’s CMD, you can move the target an additional 5 feet. The target must remain within your reach at all times during this movement, except for the final 5 feet of movement, which can be to a space adjacent to your reach.

An enemy being moved by a reposition does not provoke an attack of opportunity because of the movement unless you possess the Greater Reposition feat. You cannot move a creature into a square that is occupied by a solid object or obstacle.

SRD:
Draw or Sheathe a Weapon

Drawing a weapon so that you can use it in combat, or putting it away so that you have a free hand, requires a move action. This action also applies to weapon-like objects carried in easy reach, such as wands. If your weapon or weapon-like object is stored in a pack or otherwise out of easy reach, treat this action as retrieving a stored item.

If you have a base attack bonus of +1 or higher, you may draw a weapon as a free action combined with a regular move. If you have the Two-Weapon Fighting feat, you can draw two light or one-handed weapons in the time it would normally take you to draw one.

Drawing ammunition for use with a ranged weapon (such as arrows, bolts, sling bullets, or shuriken) is a free action.

And it does NOT provoke an AoO.

I was thinking... if Dale 5'-steps up one and to the right, then I can 5'-step to where he is now, and then I can just go into total defense and hope for the best. This has a double benefit: Dale isn't in (as much) danger anymore, as the enemies have to walk through me to get to him, and also I'm no longer being flanked.

Also, I just had a thought. I have a racial spell-like ability that allows me to cast Darkness once per day. Do you think this might be helpful?

As an experiment, my husband and I created a high-level character solely from the first level of all the core and base classes.  The result: horrible BAB, fantastic saves, about a million 0- and 1-level spells, and an obscene number of special abilities.  It turns out that you get a lot of special abilities at first level.  This meant that he could do a whole lot in one round, but he wasn't very good at doing any of them.

But we've got some work to do.

On that note, I apologize for my seeming absence this last week. I've been absolutely swamped with work and family matters as well as keeping up with the one in-person game I play in. Fair point, there. And we just had another very close call. I vote for continuing, but then Kass has had quite a lot of luck in the surviving combat department. It'd probably be best not to push it.

So, if the majority thinks the best option is to bypass the tower thing and go straight for the city (if that's even an option!), then I'll not resist it.

If that's the case, the only thing I can think of doing (which will undoubtedly make me take some damage) is try to flip the brazier over.

All three of those sound like good ideas to me. However, we should consider the possibility that disrupting one side of the room will unleash the other. Would we rather fight firey things or shadowy things? Or can we think of a way to deal with both sides of the room at the same time?

I'd do it, but I don't want to touch her with those runes on her.

On a different note, in the Advanced Races Guide, standard races cost 10-15 racial points to create.  I think I did the teenage mutant ninja turtles in 15.

I just made a Kryptonian.  It cost more than 10,000 racial points.  Just for a land speed that could break the sound barrier.

Well congratulations to Dale.  I hope it all goes well and you're back here with us soon!

In the meantime I'm all for keeping on as we have.  If the current situation devolves into a fight then any playerless characters might need to be NPC'd.  If we can squeak by here without a fight we might just make it to Azul Irkul and any NPC'd characters could split off from the group for a bit.

Whatever works, you know?

Thanks all.  And yes, it is my first.  I don't know how other women manage to do more than one pregnancy.

Anyway, my thinking is that if we put out the braziers, the portals will close, but the monsters already out of them will be free.  And I don't think we could survive a fight with that many bad guys.  But the drow might help us then.

On the other hand, killing Zatara might solve the problem altogether.  Or make it much worse.  Dale would probably object to that idea on principle, though.

Re: OOC Discussion

Well, turning out the lights entirely got rid of the shadow things before, and water dealt with the fire things pretty handily, so it's possible that we could deal with them all without even having to fight. I.e. Kill all the fire mobs with Drench and Ray of Frost before anything else, and then put out the last brazier, thus turning out the lights.

Well, I'm worried that she's actually halfway through some kind of ritual and is just stalling for time so that she can complete it. How about we take defensive positions and see what happens if we attack one of the monsters while they're still immobilised, and if the poop hits the fan we can extinguish and light the braziers using spells (I presume you guys have some form of spell that can light a brazier prepared? If not, we need to get some torches or something ready.

*Cracks neck" 10,000 years can give you such a crick in the neck!

Well I hope you all have enjoyed our month-long hiatus. I just had my birthday yesterday and my personal schedule has been pretty hectic in the intervening time so it came at a perfect time, seemingly for most of us. I'm ready to hop back into the action though sometime very soon if you all are up for it. I just want to do a quick roll-call to make sure everyone's still game though by the last few posts in this thread recently and Gren's IC post, I'm guessing we all are.

I'll be bringing in a player from the Dance of the Dead game that unfortunately closed down just before our downtime as a healer for you guys since going forward without one can generally get messy. So without further ado, let me know what's up with you all!

PS- Dale, congrats on the new kiddo! Hope all is well on that front!

Re: OOC Discussion

Hmm... well sorry to hear your job situation hasn't improved but, it sounds like some progress was made at the very least? All we can hope for I guess...

Re: OOC Discussion

As far as I'm concerned, I'll be here if you ever have a triumphant return, boss.

Best of luck to you, though; of course I hope your situation improves before you return to gaming. :)

Re: OOC Discussion

Yeah, things turned around but it seemed that when I came back, most everyone had moved on. Such is the way of the world though. I'll be sure to keep you all in mind if things start opening up again at some point. Best of luck all.

Re: OOC Discussion

Not nearly as active as my 'glory days' when I had pretty much no daily obligations to hold up on, but still floating around in case something happens :p

Glad to hear things turned around for ya, I know how hard it can be to get some stable footing nowadays.
