A Game of Throws

At 3:00AM it was expected that most of the people in the casino would be at least half drunk and tired. What was unexpected was how few of them were left inside.

Akwesasne Mohawk Casino always had people in it, from the basement MMA fighting rings to the upstairs all-you-can-eat buffet. It never closed, not even on holidays. Especially not on holidays. And that's the way that Joe Blackfur Shoemowetochawcawewahcatowe, also known as the Blackwolf, liked it. What he didn't like however, was the hostile takeover that turned his fighting pits into deathmatches, his buffets into a stripper bar, his profits into someone else's and him into a prisoner in his own club. That he could get a message out for help, without getting caught, was a testament to the Blackwolf's cunning. And that message somehow made it into the hands of his son's friend from the military.

Crossfire had done two tours with Denver Tallgrass Shoemowetochawcawewahcatowe, the Plainswolf, who had saved Crossfire's life on at least one occasion. So it was safe to say he was owed a favor. When Denver called that favor in twelve hours ago, he could hardly say no. Luckily for him, his partners Vibro and Quiksit were 'game' enough to help.

Nearly two weeks ago a mysterious figure made his way to the Blackwolf under the pretense of a high stakes poker game and won ownership of the casino. At least that was the story that everyone was given. Blackwolf had been forced to manage the casino and remain a figurehead within, all the while unable to stop the unlawful changes throughout. Always watched, Joe never made it out of the casino anymore, and most likely had a threat lingering over his head that kept him from any escape attempts or calls for help. That is, until Denver managed to get to Crossfire.

Now, in the early hours of the morning, a small team of specialists in their own right roamed the tables of dice, cards and roulette on a mission to save Shoemowetochawcawewahcatowe and his casino.

Re: A Game of Throws

Vibro never understood the appeal of gambling. That's not to say she wasn't enjoying herself. The background hum as people  diced their lifesavings away, and the raw excitement from the spectators was palpable. Despite the hour, Vibro was full of life. For others the noise may have been distracting, but not for Vibro.

Listening to all the various snippets of conversation, Vibro scanned the Casino floor for any word or mention of Blackwolf.

Re: A Game of Throws

OOC- So here's a good point to interject. Good first post by the way. You've done the right thing by describing your action, but now you'll have to give me a roll. Sometimes I'll ask for it (usually in a PM), sometimes you can just offer it. This one will be a perception check, as perception includes listen, spot, etc. You'll include this in a private line to me. At the bottom of your post, you'll give me your roll, and any of the little things you weren't willing to include in the story-post. Also, if you're making a roll, you'll go to Dice Roller, make your roll, but put what the roll is for in the description and your %. Once you've rolled, you highlight and copy it into your private line. Like so:

By the way, I won't be posting interjections in the proper game. Just this one.

I better not be too obvious, wonder where that damned Crossfire & Lizard got too?

Grabbing a champagne from a passing waiter & sipping slowly, Vibro continued meandering through the crowds, feigning attention to the games going on around her whilst taking in the myriad of conversations.

Re: A Game of Throws

Crossfire moved across the room, scanning for talent. Sure he entered with that talented piece Vibro - no cancel that, that line of thinking could get a fella killed pretty quick.

Hmmm that one in the blue evening gown is nice, isn't she a bit too nice for this Hicksville Indian joint.
"Evening Maam, beautiful night for it" Better keep circulating, get the mind back on task, now's not the time for distractions

Compared to a jungle mission this playground looked pretty sweet, buffet and babes instead of rations, bugs and GI's. The mission was pretty similar too, let the intelligence types identify the target and remain ready to eliminate it.

Pulling himself together Crossfire thought to himself First things first identify how the enemy was deployed and stay out of notice, just blend in with the crowd. Crowd, what crowd, shit the place was quiet, not much chance hadn't been made

Crossfire casually scaned for the joints muscle while subconsciously feeling for that reassuring bulge under his left arm pit.

Re: A Game of Throws

Quiksit scratched his head in wonder at how stupid Crossfire could be at times. Why did he approach me so early with his..  "Evening Maam, beautiful night for it", and was that code for something?

Of course to the casual viewer Quiksit's head scratch appeared no more than a quick adjustment to a particularly beautiful hairstyle.

As Quiksit and Crossfire parted in the crowd Quikzit scanned the room looking for the armed men. Not the obvious official guards, the hidden ones that had to be holding this operation together.

Damn Vibro and Quiksit for talking me into walking into this killing field.

Now I'm in plain sight, at close range in a near empty room when I could have been hiding out the back blowing em away at range from the shrubbery.

Re: A Game of Throws

The service was indeed slow. For a place as large as this, there were very few staff to be seen. In fact only a few of the tables were occupied at all.

Despite the lack of people, the casino's noise was still plenty and loud, even without the extra voices added to it. However, even through the cacophony, Vibro's keen aural senses pinpointed exactly what she was looking for. That, and more. The source came from another room adjacent to the central gambling area. She listened intently as she sipped lightly at her champagne, meandering through the lack of crowd.

Only meters away, Crossfire was feeling good about the flirtatious return from the woman he just spoke to. The gentle tussle of her hair could only mean that she was interested. He considered his opportunities as he combed the room with his eyes. So few people made it easy to spot the security. Large men of Native American decent stood vigil at various points throughout the room. Two stood vigil by the entrance, one each on either side of the room, and the occasional floater that moved between rooms. All  had some indication of Mohican heritage about their person, whether a few feathers or beaded necklaces. The largest of them wore his long black hair in pigtails, Pippi Longstocking style.

Quiksit noticed the same Native American security as Crossfire. Outside of them, there didn't seem to be any sign of the unofficial regulators he was looking for. He did, however, get to see a patron vomit violently on the offensive carpet. One of the security officers from that side of the room was already strutting over to him.

OOC - Vibro got a crit with her perception. Any roll in the first 10% of your skill is a crit. There are levels to success and failure in this game. So with Vibro's 85%, if she rolled anything between 1 and 9, she'd have gotten that crit. Don't assume anything else is a success or failure though. On that same token, a 99-100% is a fumble.
Normally I'd write the outcome of Vibro's success in a PM to her. I want everyone to see how this will go, so here it is:

Crit on Perception. Heard the Blackwolf's name from a voice around the corner in an adjacent room. The crit allowed you to hear that he'll be overseeing the 'Buffet' in 5 minutes, and a guy named Barry would be his babysitter.

As for Crossfire and Quiksit, you'd get a PL that would look like this:

Crossfire - success on your perception. Though it was over your score, it was an easy check, therefore you get a bonus to spot them. The way your skill rolls work is, you roll the 1d100 without bonuses, unless I give you bonuses to add. The roll you get with the d100 would be checked against your skill. If you take out the +66 you rolled with, your roll would have been 89, which is over your score of 66. This is a fail in most cases, but because it was an easy roll and I gave a +30 to spot them, you got it.

Quiksit - failure on perception. Yours was harder to spot, so there was no bonus to see the ones you were looking for.

Re: A Game of Throws

As a robot waiter passed, Vibro made a random choice from the less than appetizing selection of finger food. Eyeing the unidentified morsel skeptically, surely it can't be too bad, what motivation would they have to poison the clientele?, Vibro took the plunge and popped it into her mouth, and immediately regretted her action.

Coughing the offending article into her napkin, Vibro attempted to discretely secret the package in the nearest potted plant and down the remainder of her champagne to wash the taste of .... well she'd rather not imagine ... out of her mouth.

Re: A Game of Throws

Noticing Vibro's well placed suggestion that he interact with the Model 9145xrt Robot Waiter Quiksit elegantly glided between the tables to the nearest of the machines.  Kneeling down beside it to adjust her shoe Quiksit whispered a quiet "Hello Model 9145xrt Robot Waiter, you are looking very dapper tonight."
The words flowed into the robot's sensors as pure machine code and the Robot Waiter ground to a sudden halt and turned towards this unexpected source of programming. Remembering at the last second to proffer one of the trays of delicacies to The Programmer.
Quikzit sniffed at one of the dainty morsels and briefly considered trying one, but the truth is that although they looked tasty, their smell told Quikzit that the meat on them was too fresh and needed a few more days to mature.  A sad fact about the human race is that they seemed to have such poorly developed digestive tracts so their meat had to be eaten virtually fresh, and heavily cooked.
Ignoring the tray, Quikzit asked "Where is your registered owner,Joe Blackfur Shoemowetochawcawewahcatowe? and which of these people are staff?"

Re: A Game of Throws

Shuddering at the sight of one punter spilling the contents of his stomach onto the floor, Vibro considered her options, damn, they may well be out to poison everyone.

Taking a few steps over to Crossfire. "Hello Love, where have you been all night? I thought you'd left me.", Vibro leant in and kissed him gently on the left cheek, lingering a moment. Almost silently, "Our friend will be overseeing the buffet in 5 mins, Barry will be making sure he keeps out of mischief"

Re: A Game of Throws

OOC - Vibro had a good question. She asked if I could see all private messages/lines.

Yes. I can see everything you do in this game, apart from the faces you make while you type (and thank God for that).

Also, there are things you'll want to keep private, but there are things that you may want to include in your writing. Take for example Vibro went to whisper something. You can write in the small things you do, but not include what you actually said. Then you can PL the speech to the person you whispered to. We only have to get that secretive when people start metagaming, and I think we've all agreed not to do that.

Quick question for Vibro: why did your quotes come up as <quote> instead of " ?

Also, Quiksit, thoughts should be italicised so we know which ones are thoughts. And by the way, not to criticise, but you may want to check your grammar before you post. It shows me that you care. :) That, and I'm kind of a grammar Nazi. And just so I'm not singling you out, you other two have erred a couple of times as well, but as this is a practice run, I'm going easy on you. My brother makes everyone go back and edit their posts in his game.

As a note, I usually like to wait until everyone has had a chance to post before I do, so that I don't get ahead of what someone wanted to do. However, if you want to put filler in, be my guest. Anything you write has the potential to be character building.

Re: A Game of Throws

OOC - I hit quote rather than use ", my mistake

Leaving Crossfire, Vibro made her way over to a stationary robot waiter, and took another champagne. Taking a sip, Vibro casually remarked to the nearby lady attending to her footwear "Excuse me miss, are you ok? I do hope you haven't broken a heel and ruined those lovely shoes. Here let me see if I can help."

Kneeling beside her, Vibro bent closer to inspect the shoe, whispering at a barely audible level " Barry, get full name, mobile number, address, picture if you can. Buffet 3 minutes."

OOC this is where Crossfire points out that speech colours are supposed to be individual and sorry Lizard but I got blue first.

If a pass is for being within 10% of your target stat what incentive is there to put any ranks in a skill?

Crossfire tried to recall the plan they had discussed before they walked in here.

He seamed to recal Vibro saying "don't kill everyone, you could do that from outside dummy, this is a recon job"

Crossfire said to no one in particular "That buffet doesn't look half bad, I reckon I'll go grab a prawn"

Standing up, Vibro commented "There, it's not so bad. Mind you, I'd go careful walking on this floor, there's a nasty mess over there." and indicated over her left shoulder towards the security guard, who had made no attempt to conceal his disdain for the patron who had vomitted over the fine flooring.

"If you can still stomach eating anything, why don't you join my boyfriend and I in the buffet in a couple of minutes, and I can tell you where the best place to get Charlotte Olympia platforms is, at an absolute steel."

Taking another sip of her champagne, Vibro headed after Crossfire towards the buffet.

A couple of minutes later when the dame in blue joined him, Crossfire figured he was in with a chance, it was time he tried his killer line.

Hi Maam, you haven't seen my buddy anywhere have you, he's a Greek chap named Herklitis, never around when I want him. No I'm not trying to be rude that's his real name before you accuse me of starting a conversation about hairy clitoris' - damn just shut your trap you idiot, show the beefcake and keep the trap shut and you'll have a better chance.

He moved away from that conversational devastation to try Vibo "HEY HONEY, have you noticed how quiet this is, they can't be trying to turn a profit, wonder what the real motivation is and why they're driving the customers away"

In reply to Heraclitus (msg # 14):

OOC  None of Quikzit's post is thoughts... he has asked the robot where its owner is as a question.

I am not sure what answer Quikzit will get... but I'm expecting something there... if only "unknown" or "Would you like a a drink sir?"
