 Terrain.

Mountains -

    Most likely to have Dwarves residing in them.
    Harvestable Materials: Gold, Iron

Hills -

    Most likely to have Dwarves and Orcs residing in them.
    Harvestable Materials: Stone, Iron

Forests -

    Most likely to have Elves residing in them.
    Harvestable Materials: Lumber, Food

Swamps -

    Most likely to have Goblins residing in them.
    Harvestable Materials: Stone, Food

Plains -

    Most likely to have Humans residing in them.
    Highest likelihood of caravans and random encounters.
    Harvestable Materials: Food, Caches

Rivers -

    Generally impassable. Can be crossed with enough diplomacy and payment to a Civilization Point.  But, you can live along them.
    Some access to Food and Stone

Please note that all of the above are "normalizations" or "generalizations."  You can find gold on a plains tile and food on a mountain tile - it just changes the odds a bit.

Those of you who have played in previous iterations probably recall the maps being much larger.  Unfortunately this lead to a lack of the 'vP' in 'PvP'.  The world will be a small and dangerous place.
