Re: Ponyville Schoolhouse
Still giggling, Poppy retrieved her yellow, red, and green plaid lunchbox from her saddlebags and scampered outside to eat before the bell rang. Looking around, she sought out somepony to eat with. "Mind if I join you, BB?" she asked, trotting up to the yellow pegasus.
Bumblebee looked up, "Hey Poppy! Nah, enough shade for the both of us." she said, offering a small bag of carrots, "You wanna trade for my carrots? I'm not really keen on them but mom packed some." she said.
Granted she only asked that because she saw neither her mom or her older brother to get on her case. Her father didn't care much for carrots either so he was a constant co-conspirator.
"Sure," Poppy laughed, pulling out a couple of bags of veggies of her own. "I love carrots. Do you prefer asparagus or zucchini?" she asked, nodding at the two bags of green veggies as she pulled out her sandwich - honey-oat bread with fresh lettuce and tomatoes, and a good thick filling of homemade apple salad, with corn, carrots, plenty of mayo, and a bit of parsley and sunflower petals for good measure. A juicebox of pear juice and a bag of chocolate chip oat cookies - plenty to share - soon followed.
"Asparagus I guess." Bumblebee said, "I've only ever had it in soup though" she shrugged, pulling out her own lunches other bits, which included moist, chewy brownies and some crispy apple chips, "Here ya go" she smiled, happily sharing her lunch with Poppy.
"This is broiled in the oven, with olive oil and just a hint of garlic," Poppy grinned, passing over the spears and moving the cookies to the middle. "We always used to steam it, and that's good too, but the olive oil just brings out the flavor so well. It is really good in soup, too, though - Mom made a really good cream of asparagus soup with curry, it was amazing." There was the briefest hint of... something in the blue filly's eyes at the mention of her mother, but it vanished as quickly as it had appeared.
BB smiled, taking the asparagus with a nod, "Thanks." she said, she had noticed the brief glance in Poppy's eyes but decided she wouldn't comment on it yet. She didn't want to ruin the mood.
"Was I imagining things or are you Already done with your book report?" she asked, munching on the head of one of the green stalks, "... yum, this is really good."
"I'm already done," Poppy giggled. "There was an article so interesting, I just couldn't put it down. So I wrote the book report right away, before I could forget everything I learned. And it'll really help me learning to grow vegetables as well as flowers."
"Wow." Bumblebee chuckled, "I'm still trying to figure out how I'm gonna write a book report on a cookbook" she sighed, nibbling at the crust of her sandwich. "At least Miss Cheerilee said it was okay to do. I just have no idea how I'm gonna pull that off."
"Hmm... maybe try a few recipes, and write about your favorite? Like what's in it, and where it comes from?" Poppy suggested. "Or find a recipe you like, and try changing it a little to make something new, and then write about that?"
The pegasus blinked at the other foal, "... hey, that's a good idea. I can also maybe go into the background of honey too." she said, tapping her hoof to her chin, "I mean, not at length but a brief overview. I mean that's why I choose the recipe book, all the honey stuff."
Poppy nodded. "I don't know very much about honey, except that it's really yummy," she giggled. "Hmm... maybe for the next book report, you could find one on beekeeping - I bet that would have lots in it about honey."
Bumblebee blinked, "..." she then facehoofed, "That is the last time I choose a book to read when I'm hungry."
Well, now the answer to that question (that being -why- she chose a cookbook for her book report) was out in the open.
"Kinda like why me and Ava don't go to the farmers' market before lunch," Poppy giggled. "Still, I bet writing about a recipe will be a really neat book report, and it's an excuse to make and try yummy foods, right? I mean, the beekeeping books in the library aren't going anywhere. Or if they do, somepony'll return them," she grinned.
"Yup! There is that. Hey, you wanna come over and be my offical taste-tester? Gotta have an objective third party, right?" she asked Poppy with a wide grin.
"I'd love to!" Poppy nodded. "Ava says that peer review is essential to good research, and I'm your peer, right?" she grinned.
"Right... I think." Bumblebee giggle, "Though you don't look like something I should tie a boat to" she winked at the other mare in her bad joke, "So long as you don't pressure me of course."
"I dunno - I like swimming, it might be fun to try and tow a small boat," Poppy giggled. "That could create some pressure."
