The Summer Song Cafe

-=Summer Song Cafe=-

The Summer Song Cafe is a coffee shop opened by a newcomer to town from Canterlot in recent years.  The property was originally the Clover Cafe, but was purchased by the new owner and converted into a specialty cafe rather than a conventional restaurant.  Offering a variety of delicious coffees, teas, and other refreshments, it's become the go-to place for a quick pick-me-up day or night.

The cafe itself is a quaint shop that doubles as the home of its owner, Merriweather, and her son Meadow Lark.  The interior is clean, cozy, and has a very welcoming atmosphere that many Ponies find to be soothing on tired nerves.  There is a stage in the corner equipped with various musical instruments where locals are invited to perform if they are capable or inclined.

Re: The Summer Song Cafe

--Intro Post--

"Finally, a place to refuel..." Darkmoon grunted as she pulled a wagon along the streets of Ponyville. She was a Pegasus pony, with a mustard coloured coat. Her main and tail were short and spiky, red streaked with black. Her cutie mark was a rainbow coloured moon, complete with Nightmare Moon on it.

Pulling up to the parking area, she set the wagon down with a heavy sigh. "Pegasi shouldn't be pulling wagons..." she grumbled, though it was her own doing. She was the lead singer of a popular rock and metal band named Alicorn Repaint. She once had a large house in Las Pegasus, and another in Manehattan. She attended parties every day when she wasn't recording and lived a live of decadence and excess. However, something happened in her life that caused her to give it all up. It caused her to sell her homes, put the band on hiatus, and move to Ponyville. She was determined to start fresh, to work hard and to live a proper life. She had to prove it to herself that she could do it. She also needed to prove it... for the reason she came here.

She cracked her back as she stretched, letting out a sigh of relief. Heading into the Summer Song Cafe, she opened the door and stepped inside. "Hello?" she asked, her green eyes looking around for staff.

Re: The Summer Song Cafe

<--- From Sweet Apple Acres

Trotting down through Ponyville's main business thoroughfare, Applejack was sporting a freshly washed and braided mane, and a lovely Wonderbolt Cadet by her side. The two captured a little bit of attention, dressed out as they were, and Rainbow had only just gotten in from training... So of course, there were the usual choruses of greetings along the way. Applejack seemed relaxed, trotting along with Rainbow on the way to the Summer Song Cafe.

She got the door for Rainbow, and trotted inside just behind her - and the pair had entered shortly on the tail of Darkmoon. Applejack gave a little nudge. "Why don't we grab us a table?" she suggested, and led the way, getting Rainbow's chair and settling across from her with a warm smile.

She reached her forehoof across the table, for Rainbow's.

"Ah'm real glad 'yer back, Rainbow..." She smiled earnestly. "Tell me about training...? How'd it go?"

Rainbow Dash smiled and reached out to touch Applejack's forehoof after taking a seat at the table. She glanced over at Darkmoon, who was still searching for a staff member. She looked REALLY familiar, but she couldn't place it.

Dash turned her attention back to Applejack. "I'm glad to be back." she smiled and then shrugged. "It went well enough that I got promoted." she beamed. "It was really just a lot of classroom stuff. It's more about flying at this stage... I need to start learning how to be a responsible leader. Something I'm not sure I can do. I'm not Twilight after all. Or you. You always manage to lead the Apple Family every harvest after all."

"...  Actually..  ah' wanted to ask.. You were talkin' about Scootaloo, bondin' with her durin' the Runnin' of the Leaves.. That mean you think we can go ahead and adopt her?" She asked, hopefully.

Re: The Summer Song Cafe

--Intro Post--

Given the time of day, it wasn't all that busy in the Summer Song Cafe.  The most hustle and bustle always showed up right in time for the breakfast rush or the lunch hour - brunch was still a popular time, but not quite as much in comparison.  Darkmoon, Applejack, and Rainbow Dash had no trouble finding spaces for themselves, be it waiting at the counter for staff or helping themselves to a regular table.

"Welcome to the Summer Song Cafe!  I'll be right with you." China Saucer, the slim-and-pale Unicorn waitress for the locale, was busy collecting dishes from a patron who was just on his way out.  Her telekinesis floated them on over through the serving window to the kitchen, though her gaze was distracted from Darkmoon when she spotted the two love birds coming in soon after.  Her bright blue eyes gleamed at the sight of Rainbow Dash in uniform and she set a hoof to her lips to sharply whistle toward the back.  "Oi, boss mare!  Need a hoof at table fourteen, thanks!"

With that call for help done, China ambled on over to the road-weary Darkmoon with a cheerful smile and gesture to either the counter or a nearby small table for two.  "Thanks for your patience.  My name's China Saucer and I'll be helping you out today.  Go on and have a seat wherever you like.  Can I get you some water and a menu?"

Re: The Summer Song Cafe

--Intro post--

It wasn't long until China's call back to the kitchen was answered.  Not with words, but simple action as the so-called "boss mare" herself ambled on out through the swinging doors.  Merriweather certainly didn't look the sort to be managing a cafe given her towering build and stoic expression, but the apron she wore said otherwise.  She was already in mid-motion of telekinetically pulling out a pad of paper and pencil to take down table fourteen's order when she actually looked up long enough to see who was there.

Seeing a look of passive calm on Merriweather's face was common.  A disapproving scowl, or a furrow of her brows when something annoyed her, also showed up more frequently than she would have liked.  But, from time to time, there were things that warranted a genuine smile out of the mare.  As she approached Applejack and Rainbow Dash, the Unicorn's expression piqued and eased from being placid quickly into a warm, excited grin that was practically ear-to-ear by the time she arrived.

"Look at you!  Goodness, Rainbow, stand up and let me see you better!" the scarred mare was absolutely beaming over the sight of Rainbow Dash in her uniform, proud as could be.

Re: The Summer Song Cafe

Applejack didn't quite have the same ear for  popular music that Rainbow did, so  Darkmoon's status went a bit over her head, but she did recognize that she didn't know the pegasus. She offered a charming little tip of her hat in greeting as they passed her by, but she wasn't going to get sidetracked on her afternoon date.

She nodded to China Saucer as she passed her by, smiling a little with a hint of pride as China called out the 'boss mare' herself to serve them. The tense question evaporated a bit as Merriweather approached to admire Rainbow in her dress uniform. Appledash felt the awkwardness of the Scootaloo Question fade into a warm, flzzy glow ofpride as Merriweather asked Rainbow to stand. She stood, and stepped out so as not to be the only one on her flank. "Hee-hee, Howdy, Merri. Yeah, RD does cut a pretty nice look in that uniform." She confessed, a blush blooming on her cheeks anew. Applejack was beaming, and there was no real denying why - that uniform did have a bit of an effect, especially now, as she got to show off Rainbow in it. She brushed her hoof along Rainbow's shoulder, and smoothed the uniform out beneath her wing.

She smiled at Merri. "Ya'll been doin' alright? We've been mid-harvest, but 'ah couldn't wait 'ta spend time with Rainbow... Now that she's back." Applejack confessed happily, leaning into Rainbow's side.

Re: The Summer Song Cafe

"Hey, Merri!" She smiled back as the cafe owner approached. The proud smile on her face filled Rainbow Dash with a warmth she rarely let herself feel. Rainbow Dash's own mom had long since been out of her life, so she had taken to going to Merriweather about advice on most things. Being former military only helped to strengthen the bond they shared. Dash had even taken to jokingly refer to her as 'Merrimom' a time or two.

As Dash blushed and modelled her uniform for Merriweather, the proudness on her face and in her voice mad Dash's eyes well up. It felt good, for sure. She sniffled. "Sorry... not used to the air at this low altitude anymore. Making my eyes be stupid." She chuckled softly and sat back down. "They made me an official Lieutenant."

The very tired looking Darkmoon had taken a seat at the counter and flopped face first with a heavy sigh. Upon hearing China Saucer's voice she quickly sat up and regained her composure as best ahe could. "Oh, Faust, both sound amazing right now. I'm running on empty here."

Re: The Summer Song Cafe

Now there was a sight China was familiar with.  The hard-working or travel-haggard Pony slumping down in exhaustion... bit early in the day for it though, she thought.  There was still plenty of sympathy in her expression as she quickly magicked over a slim menu and fresh glass for Darkmoon, filling it from the pitcher with cool, pure water that was scented faintly with lemon and mint.

"You look like you've had a pretty long trip.  Visiting from out of town?" China made small-talk as she also brought over a small bowl of complimentary oats for the weary Pegasus, giving her something to chew on while she perused the menu.  The selection was a bit surprising though... despite being in a quaint little town like Ponyville, the cafe's menu looked like something she'd more likely find in Canterlot as it was lacking the usual sort of greasy spoon choices she might have expected.  But they sure weren't charging Canterlot prices for anything.

Re: The Summer Song Cafe

Those who hung around Merriweather long enough knew that her grizzled exterior was hardly a reflection on her inner mannerisms.  The war horse was plenty soft at the center and had absolutely no qualms in expressing it as she fawned over Rainbow Dash, unable to keep herself from pulling the diminutive mare into a gentle hug by the shoulders.

"I am so proud of you!  Though I'm sure they just toss out promotions like confetti, so you shouldn't preen too much just yet." Merri winked as she stepped back.  Despite that sort of remark there was no ire in her tone - Rainbow would have long since caught on to the playful rivalry amid the different factions in Equestria's military.  The Wonderbolts were always teased as being showponies who had it easy while Merri's former force, the Gallop Guard, were teased right back as never being happy unless they were fighting monsters, in the mud, uphill both ways, while on fire.  The Sea Pony Corps. always equally mocked the other factions as both being a bunch of foals too scared to get their hooves wet.  Despite the barbs and insults frequently tossed around, they were never made in genuine disdain - especially not when Merri gave that sort of playful jab while still beaming as if she'd watched her foal take its first steps.

The Unicorn couldn't help but take in the sight of both Applejack and Rainbow Dash together with a pleasant sigh.  That had sure been a rocky start... the cafe had been heavy with gossip about it for days, but she was glad to see the happy couple looking so content together.  "Things have been the same as ever; equal parts quiet and busy.  I rather like the routine.  Though let me know when you start sealing cider kegs so I can buy a couple.  I've got some new Autumn recipes I want to try." Merri chatted with Applejack as the two settled in.  "So what can I get you two?  Are you staying around for a while on a date, or are you just popping in for something quick on your way?"

Re: The Summer Song Cafe

"Ya'll be tha' first ta'know. But ah'm plannin' ta' distribute right before the Runnin' of the Leaves, so that everypony can go out 'an get Cider anywhere in town,  after tha' event." She grinned a little. It was a neat business idea, wait 'till ponies were at their thirstiest,in celebratory spirits, and let loose with the best drinks apples could make!

Applejack beamed a little, fussing with her hat once it was clear Merri was eying them both together. "We're celebratin' RD's promotion, an' her return home..." And judging from how AJ had gone out of her way to braid her mane, and the fact that she seemed quite clean despite it being the middle of harvest season... it was a special occasion. "So, ah... yeah, date~" She grinned at Rainbow for a moment, then Merri.

Honestly, the brush with Merriweather served as a delightful reminder for what was really important. Applejack had wanted to jump right into talking about business - Scootaloo and what was waiting for her. But they'd butted heads over Scootaloo before, and she didn't want an argument again - not right now. It wasn't that Scootaloo wasn't important. But there was more to say and do than talk about that again...

Applejack hoped that her smile to Merri conveyed half the gratitude she felt, as she lightly trotted back to her seat and settled in, putting a hoof to her lip. "Ya' got anythin' exciting' on the specials t'day Merri? It bein' a special day, 'an all? Bits ain't a consideration." Apparently, being with Rainbow loosened up some of Applejack's more thrifty attitudes - on occasion.

Rainbow Dash chuckled at the friendly rib. She knew it was just a joke and knew that Merriweather wasn't the type to say anything with ill intent. All a part of being in the Equestrian Military! "Heh, yeah. Flap my wings at the same time, get a medal. Do it not at the same time, get another one." she grinned. "Besides, there weren't any three headed dragons in the local area to fight, so..." she ribbed the much larger mare right back. She retook her seat with a smile.

"Kind of an impromptu date really. Seeing as I'm dressed up and Applejack is looking so good, we figured what the hay?" She smiled over to Applejack and then looked over to Merriweather quickly. "But I would love one of your chocolate malts! I've missed them so much!"

"I'm actually moving here." Darkmoon muttered as she managed to lift her head and down the glass of water in one go of it. "Another, please." She sat back and looked over the menu that was laid before her. "Whoa... I think there's a misprint on your menu. The prices for this food are missing a few zeroes." she chuckled, thinking about what she'd want.

"It was kind of a spur of the moment thing to move here, really. I just figured... it was time to get my life in order, ya know? Gimme the middle section. All of it." she slid the menu to the back section of the counter with her hoof. "I'm starving... I didn't think Manehattan to Ponyville was so far!"

Re: The Summer Song Cafe

"Yeah, you can blame the big minty cream puff over there for the pricing.  Don't get her started talking about mark-ups and gouging tactics in Canterlot - she'll talk your ear off." China rolled her eyes a bit as she nodded over at Merriweather across the cafe.  Minty, perhaps, but the imposing, battle-scarred mare sure didn't look like a cream puff by any measure.  In the meantime, China quickly refilled Darkmoon's glass and then just left the pitcher there for good measure, letting her help herself - water was free anyway, of course.

"Well, you picked a good place to make a new start for yourself then.  Ponyville's got it all.  Scenic countryside, quaint locals, at least two Princesses at any given time, an unpredictable spirit of pure chaos... oh, and Discord too."  the slim Unicorn had to chuckle at her own joke even if Darkmoon wouldn't get it.  Once she met Pinkie Pie, she'd understand.  "Anyway, gimme a few minutes and I'll get your orders on out one at a time.  Can't have you starving to death waiting for the plates to all come out at once."

If Darkmoon had the desire to continue chatting, she'd find China still within earshot.  There was a large serving window in between the kitchen and the dining area, so even as the waitress set about getting orders cooked up, she was still wholly within conversational range.  Of course, once dishes loaded up with food started hovering their way out to Darkmoon, odds were she wouldn't be interested in chatting much longer.  Not when she had delicious treats wafting her way - thick cut toast with fresh butter and preserves, zesty yogurt mixed with a variety of chopped fruits and honey, a simmering bowl of pale, savory broth loaded up with a medly of finely sliced autumn veggies and squash... and that was just to start!

"You're welcome." Merri joked.  With a flicker of her horn, she magicked up her order pad to float before her, ready for the two mares to figure out what they planned on having for brunch.  As Rainbow Dash asked for a chocolate malt, she ended up getting a brief, motherly glance over the pad of paper instead.  "Real food first, sweets later.  You don't need to be spoiling your appetite."

The very notion of a restaurant openly scolding its customers about their orders was entirely odd, but Merri never was particularly traditional when it came to how she ran her business.  Many Ponies around town saw her as a second mother of sorts and it was no surprise that she'd dote on the diets of those she served.  She gave a smile over at Applejack.  "As for the specials, we've just gotten in a bunch of seasonal veg, so we're full on into pumpkin bread, autumn squash soups, roasted sweet potatoes... I'd offer the baked cinnamon apples, but you probably get enough of that at home."

Merri was quick to jot down whatever the pair wanted and send the slip on back to the kitchen ahead of herself with a little flare of telekinesis.  "Oh, and as of now, you both get to enjoy the 20%-off Military Discount." she noted with a smile, though she also quickly added on: "...and before you ask, no, that does not retroactively apply to your tab, Rainbow."

Re: The Summer Song Cafe

Applejack grinned a little at Merriweather as she lightly scolded Rainbow for her casual approach to calling for dessert first. "Ah' think she's pullin' rank on 'ya, RD." Applejack quipped, teasing her marefriend playfully.  As Merriweather went over the recent specials, Applejack licked her lips lightly, and nodded. "Mhmm, ya' always make everythin' sound so enticin', Merri." She smiled to Rainbow, then nodded to Merri. "Ah'll have 'tha squash soup, an' some pumpkin breadsticks, ah think." She put on a grin. "And, ah... ah'll have whatever Rainbow's havin' to drink." She said, smiling to her military marefriend with a smile...

Though, she spared a brief glance back to Merriweather. She blushed a little as Merri revealed that she'd be benefiting from the military discount, too, and she raised a hoof to fuss with her hat lightly, beaming to Rainbow. After placing their orders, Applejack reached across the table to touch Rainbow's hood with hers, and took a deep breath.

"Does that discount apply to--" she began to ask, but was cut off by Merriweather's add on answer. "Very well... you win this round." Dash narrowed her eyes in mock sinister fashion. "I'll at least be able to chip away at that tab now that I'm earning Lieutenant's pay. Merri was joking the last time that she'd be contracting Twilight to organize and calculate my tab." She chuckled.

At the denial of her chocolate malt she rolled her eyes. "Always being Merrimom, huh?" She teased. "Though technically its a beverage and not a sweet." She tried to wiggle her way into getting it. "I want something deep fried... and also something super spicy." She grinned, feeling her stomach rumble. "And a soda, please."

As Applejack touched her hoof, she smiled and caressed it with her own.

Although, the mention of Lieutenant pay perked her ears up. "Uhh.. Hay, Don'cha get some kinda big fancy bonus when ya' get promoted, RD?" She glanced between Rainbow and Merriweather, raising her hoof in a gesture of helpful Honesty...

Count on Applejack to think of it.

Darkmoon grinned as thr first plates came out. She grabbed the bowl of free oats and sprinkled some in her soup for crunch and texture. It was a trick she picked up while touring in Caneighda, and she hoped she wasn't offending the cook by doing so!

"Yeah, Ponyville definitely has what I'm looking for..." she let out a soft sigh as she rememebered why she was here, why she gave it all up. The mention of the princesses and Discord made her chuckle. "This tiny town has a lot of star power, for sure. Princess Twilight, the Elements of Harmony too. I've read a lot about them. I hope to get an interview for my show. I got a gig over at the radio station for a show. Got a place in the upstairs to stay too. Thinking on another part time job, though. Know of anything?"

As Merriweather got started on their order, Applejack's ears perked up a little at the discussion nearby - mostly picking up on just a couple of relevant buzzwords. She leaned over toward Rainbow and lowered her voice a bit. "Hay, don't be lookin' now, but ah' think we got ourselves a fan." She chuckles lightly, then reached over, giving Rainbow a little nudge with her hoof.
