Hera's Hearth and Kettle (OOC Chat Thread)

Players:

Here we can discuss anything out of character.

This will also be the thread to discuss the kind of characters you wish to create, how your characters will know one another, and what your general goals in this adventure will be.  I am hoping for a collaborative gaming experience where party members will rely on one another as teammates while pursuing greater glory and vying for the attention of the Gods themselves.

Re: Hera's Hearth and Kettle (OOC Chat Thread)

Since we have three players now, I thought I'd open things up in here for everybody to begin discussion about character creation, and some background on how your characters might know one another.  If you already have an idea or concept of what kind of character/class/etc you want to be, go ahead and introduce yourself. Also, as MM I will be using all the rules available, including the companion PDF set, which includes such things as Background Talents, the possibility of becoming a Divine Agent, etc.

As for the world in which this game takes place, the Maze Master Guide has a pre-set world called "Mythika" that I will also be using as my template for this game.

Maze Master's Guide:
Mythika is an imaginary world reminiscent of ancient mediterranean Europe. It is centered around a Middle Sea bordered by a civilized country called the Land of the Three Cities, itself reminiscent of mythic Greece. Mythika is a place of wonders and perils, heroes and monsters, quests and odysseys.

This also includes a handy-dandy colored map as well which I'll copy/paste and put up on a separate thread so each of you can check it out. You'll see that the geography is very similar to the the mediterranean area of Italy, Greece, Egypt, etc...  For purposes of this game, your characters will start off in one of the "Three Cities".

Maze Master's Guide:
The Land of the Three Cities

As its name implies, this rich and civilized coastal country is divided into three independent (and rival) city-states: Thena, Heraklia and Argos.

Each of these city-states is a major political power with its own culture, economy and armed forces. In the past, the strong rivalry of the Three Cities has caused several wars but they have been in peace for more than 100 years now, thanks to the efforts of the Thenan monarchs.

With the exception of Barbarians, Centaurs and Amazons, most Mazes & Minotaurs adventurers will come from the Land of the Three Cities

I'm happy to answer more questions as they come up, especially with regards to character creation.

2012 Rules Update

Hey guys - be sure to check out the 2012 update that MM has regarding character creation, as well as other changes that have been made to the game, I'll be doing another read through the main manual myself as this has changed for me since the last time I ran a MM game (which was a few years ago)

Link is at: http://mazesandminotaurs.free.fr/UPDATE.pdf

Good luck with your rolls:

Re: Hera's Hearth and Kettle (OOC Chat Thread)

Hi Guys!  Bonivant here.

I'm interested in a Hoplite or Noble type.

Just saw the Olympic Torch Lighting Ceremony from Delphi.  Got me in the mood :o)

Re: Hera's Hearth and Kettle (OOC Chat Thread)

As for myself, I was in the MM's last (very fun) effort.  Reprising my role, Air/Darkness Elementalist.

Have always loved Greek mythology in general, and think M&M is a generally wonderful system.  Nice balance between old school and D20, I think.

Player 3:
I'm interested in a Hoplite or Noble type.

Either is a fine idea, as far as I'm concerned as the Maze Master. I'd prefer that players play the kind of character they are most drawn to.

I think if you go with a "Noble" hero, we'd play off that he/she would be either of a lesser family of Nobles from the Three Cities (and therefore not immediately recognizable), or perhaps that he/she is the youngest child, or their family no longer has status, etc... Essentially your character has noble heritage, but they have to earn their own way in life.

Spearman (Hoplite) is good choice as well. That'd be a class that would be easy to put you into one of the Three Cities' armies, or militas, or even somebody who just enjoys the art.  It'd put you in a different position then a Noble, as your access to NPCs wouldn't be necessarily be through politics, but could be through kinship or just mutual respect for other warriors.

Re: Hera's Hearth and Kettle (OOC Chat Thread)

hmmm....just saw the preferences and burst out laughing since they were the 2/3 options I was trying to choose between. Since elementalist is taken by the looks, thinking of Noble or Cavalryman.

Re: Hera's Hearth and Kettle (OOC Chat Thread)

I tell you what, I'll let you choose first :o)

If you decide on Noble, I'll go with Hoplite.
If you decide on Cavalryman, I'll go with Noble.

This was we could even be from the same Phalanx, Ippiko, or Prodromoi?  With the Noble being the officer?

We could ALL be childhood friends, each following our own destiny but remaining close.

Re: Hera's Hearth and Kettle (OOC Chat Thread)

I think I have a good starting adventure for the three of you ready to go. For now, you can roll up your characters at your leisure. (and let me know when you have a name ready so I can make that change).

Once your characters are ready, you can post your introductions at The Satyr's Flute, and we can do some character development there before putting everybody into the story proper.

Continue to discuss character ties in here though. Childhood friends is a good way to tie everybody together.

Re: Hera's Hearth and Kettle (OOC Chat Thread)

I wouldn't think of elementalist as 'taken', necessarily.

With a different pair of elements, it is virtually a different class.  We would have no spells in common.

Don't want to rain on anybody's parade for already having a character (mostly) ready. ;)

Re: Hera's Hearth and Kettle (OOC Chat Thread)

Yeah, don't feel that you are limited in your character selection. If for whatever reason everybody wanted to play as a "Noble", I'd be O.K. with that. I'd much rather have everybody play the kind of character they are interested in.

In reply to Player 3 (msg #8):

I like the friends option...and the nobles are versatile enough to have two if they are designed for different purposes.

Want to go friendly rival nobles?

Two Nobles!  That's a good Idea.

I'd like to be a Professional Soldier and Hoplite all the same.  I'll rework my CharSheet.

A pair of nobles does sound encouraging for the role play.

Re: Hera's Hearth and Kettle (OOC Chat Thread)

Two nobles is fine by me. They are a pretty versatile class. Feel free to work out the relationship between the two on your own, just remember that they'll be traveling together.

I think that while for roleplaying purposes, Petracles (formerly Player 3), would have a military background of a spearman, as a Noble, he'd have the "Aristocractic Authority" reputation effect instead of Military Comradeship.

Aristocratic Authority::
Nobles benefit from the reputation effect when dealing with people from their city-state or kingdom.

Military Comradeship:
Spearmen benefit from the reputation effect when dealing with soldiers of non- hostile countries.

It won't come into play all that often anyway, but just something you should be aware of.  After all, as a Nobleman, you'd be in the higher ranks anyway as opposed to your ordinary spearman.

How is everything else going? I believe I can re-bump my ad in a few days, but we can pretty much start the game as soon as everybody else is ready.  If you need help with character creation, or even just want a template to fill out, I'm happy to provide that for you.

Re: Hera's Hearth and Kettle (OOC Chat Thread)

All done on my sheet - (of course, I had a good head start) did a last check to see if there was anything at all I wanted to change - and there isn't.

I'm getting her background together in my head - mostly complete.  No problem changing whatever details you need to suit the start.

Should have it for you in writing fairly soon.

Re: Hera's Hearth and Kettle (OOC Chat Thread)

I think I've finished draft 2 of Petracles (pronounced Petra-Cleese) CharSheet.

Aristocratic Authority makes me from the Officer Class, right?
Sounds good to me.

I also went for Tactician and Wrestling as background skills.
Aiming for an Achilles type, short on words but double hard!

Re: Hera's Hearth and Kettle (OOC Chat Thread)

Now, you aren't perchance in Ben's game, and saying 'hi' in a humorous manner, are you?    (which will make no sense to you, if not, ignore...)

If correct pronunciation is wanted, Dysis = like Isis, with a D on the front.  Means 'sunset' in the Greek.

I'm not of noble birth.   And call on the powers of darkness, and worship an underworld goddess.   I'm expecting I may not win popularity polls with this.

Nonetheless, can be counted on as a team player; not into playing obnoxious, moody-loner types.

Ben's Game?  I don't think so.

You've gotta be drop dead gorgeous right?  Being a Priestess of Hades must have it's advantages...

Re: Hera's Hearth and Kettle (OOC Chat Thread)

She's not exactly an eyesore, we'll say.  But, I'm unlikely to use superlatives like "D.D.G." to describe any character I play.

And, it's Persephone she reveres -- as an elementalist.  It's as much metaphysical/philosophical connection, as it is religious.

I've got orator / scholar in the talents department.   Looks we've some overlap amongst us, but that's not a bad thing.

Re: Hera's Hearth and Kettle (OOC Chat Thread)

Please welcome our fourth player (Player 4!)

I'm going to bump my original advert tomorrow as soon as it is available, so maybe we'll end up with 5 or 6 players in total (which would be ideal).
