I'm concerned with more practical implications of 'does my god make a frowny face if we kill evil humanoids instead of taking them captive.'

Because then I have to stop party members who keep attacking, by force if necessary.

I prefer to not say outright what the right or wrong thing is, that is for you to discover with your character. I will give you clues if your actions cross the line, or toe too closely too often. This goes for all characters, not just paladins. Ignored hints will lead to alignment change in time.

Dekar, keep in mind that Heironeous is the god of chivalry, justice, honor, war, daring, and valor. From the right perspective, there is a way to justify many courses of action if played right.

Mentor...it's not about what one can justify. It's about what is right. People justified slavery RL right here in the US until a nice man named Abe Lincoln put a stop to it.

Morality is NOT subjective in D&D. There's a sentient being...in this case, Heironeus...making the call if you're within bounds or not. Fortunately, being Lawful Good, he's also really consistent about it.

Sleeping or helpless enemies have technically surrendered whether they want to or not, is the thing.

When Lawful Good shifts to Lawful Neutral, mercy is typically the first thing to go.

I'm not sure if Mentor is talking about rationalizing. At the risk of meta-gaming (don't hurt me Mentor!), we've seen the hobs being cruel to their slaves so there is a justice angle. You could challenge him to a trial by combat to prove his innocence, a chivalrous and honorable tradition in the church of the war god. Mentor's let me define much Solonor Thelandira's dogma and how it plays a role in Ah'vain's life and actions. I think that's what he wants you to do with Dekar. If you think the hob's life should be spared for now, you should announce it to the rest of the party so we know your intentions. Keep in mind that we have a band of freed slaves that could guard a prisoner. The sailor guy ex-slave seems competent enough. End meta.
