The Piper  Picked a Peck of People

Wednesday, 5am, in the cafeteria of the Glasgow branch of Interpol, two lone figures sit, unusual, since the cafeteria doesn't serve breakfast until 6.
I assume you wish to meet them today?

You assume correctly.  All things considered, they have done well so far, though cleaning up the Council's mess was a little louder and messier than I'd have liked.

Occupational Hazard when dealing with supernatural, especially wizardlings.

All things considered, it was probably for the best.  I assume Dr. Milos was killed before using his death curse?

Levy made no mention of such a thing.  I have to think it took him by surprise.  Milos was not overly experienced.  Which of course means he had a benefactor who understood mortal magicks.

That is why I backed you in starting these taskforces.  I agree something changed.  The amount of supernatural incidents have risen significantly, more than one man can handle.  Someone appears to be stirring the pot.

Like Chicago?

Ugh, I don't know what happened in Chicago.  It's unlikely some guy just stumbled on that kind of power though. I have the New York branch investigating the link between Sells and 3-eye.  Was he one of the suppliers?  Or just a local maker who was given a recipe? That's not a pleasant thought.

It's going to get worse before it gets better.  A lot worse.  Get your team prepared, Sergei.

<Brown>They will be, in due time.  I'm about to send them to follow up a lead on the 3-eye...

No! That's why I have Felix.  If it becomes necessary, I'll send for your team, but not right now.  It's time to put them firmly in the middle of things.  Sink or swim.  We've been asked for help in Wyvis, I talked to Dena, they can stay at the Lodge next to Loch Glass.

There is silence for a moment, Sergei staring hard at the table in front of him.<Brown>You are certain?

I will be after the briefing, one way or the other.  If the Piper is back, we can't wait.  This will let us know how capable Levy and Williams are, while also being a better test of their methodology. Oh, one last thing, about the previous mission, there was a gap in the real report.  What happened to the air spirit, and where did the gnomes move to?

Well, ma'am, we never ascertained the exact item the spirit was bound to, leading us to believe the object was destroyed while the spirit was out of it, thus freeing the spirit.  As to the latter, I'm afraid that's classified.

Sergei grins at his superior's grim look as Rebekah and Ariel enter, and get food.  Before they return to the sitting room, both previous occupants have left.

Israel rolls out of bed with a groan, his shoulder still sore.  At least there were no nightmares this time, he thinks. He recites his morning prayer and reads the daily Torah portion, before getting dressed and heading out for breakfast, grabbing his usual seat with Rebekah & Ariel.

Re: The Piper  Picked a Peck of People

Since it looks like last week was a bit of a fluke on the "clock in" time, I'm breaking my PT up.  The run is first thing in the morning and the strength training is later in the day, presumably after leaving the office.  That way I don't have to rush through the rest of my routine to make it to the office on time (15 minutes early).

However, I am wearing a weighted vest and light ankle weights to simulate the weight of kevlar and combat boots.  I'm also pushing myself to bring my 10 mile time down by 5 seconds within the next 2 months.

(Atlhetics:  7 unless that should be an Endurance roll, in which case it's an 8)

I get cleaned up and head on in to the office via the cafeteria.

Mornin' ladies, Levy.  How's the shoulder?,

Yes, Williams is in a great mood after his run this morning and he's hoping the rest of his day goes as well as his run did.

/to Rebekah/

Levy looks as if shocked. "First of all, the briefing packet failed to cover what would happen if a supervillian's circle explodes. Second of all, not my fault, never my fault. Third, you mean you aren't infatuated with me yet? Crud, I've got more work to do."

/to Jacob/

Levy feigns innocence, "You mean you've never had a suspect explode in your face before? I'm sure I've seen it happen in a movie. Stop destroying my illusions of America." He starts to grin, the smile growing wider as he speaks, "And when did you see Star Wars? Don't you Looziyana boys fight alligators for entertainment or something? You mean to tell me you have electricity in the swamps? Next think you'll tell me is you don't have to row down the bayou to go to work. I don't think my heart could take it."

I laugh heartily at that one:

Well, sorry to burst your bubble there, Levy.  Bossier Parish ain't got that many bayous.  Like Horace said the other day, I come from the part of the state that's practically in Texas, so we ain't all a bunch of web-footed coon-asses.  No, I'm from the civilized part of the state.  Of course, the problem with livin' in a state of lunatics is that you've got to go somewhere else to find a wife that's crazier than you are.  Krystal didn't exactly fit in around Seattle either, she might kind of be a hippie, but she never was into the drugs and... Jacob blushes just a bit since he's in mixed company weird sex and stuff...  No, Krystal's, well, I guess you'd say she's a conservative green Republican?  She's a vegetarian and kind of a health fanatic, she donates to the Arbor Foundation and the WWF (the World Wildlife Fund, not the one with Hulk Hogan, I was kind of disappointed too), and we saved some money and got one of those weird little hybrid cars that Toyota started makin' a couple years ago.  But other than not doin' drugs and not sleepin' with everything she sees, she didn't fit in with the yahoos in Seattle because she believes in Jesus and they just don't tolerate that kind of behavior up there.

It confuses us poor uneducated Middle Easterners. We are but nomads and shepherds - at least according to American Television." He laughs, then finishes his breakfast and motions towards the door to the office. "I guess we shouldn't keep the boss waiting."

Re: The Piper  Picked a Peck of People

In reply to Israel Levy (msg # 12):

The four of you enter the Cloud Basement, home of your division and the location of your desks and paperwork.  You automatically look to the glassed in office where you know you have a briefing momentarily.  Standing next to Sergei is a woman of about 5'7 in stature.  Not short, for a woman, but not particularly tall.  From here her hair, which looks red through the glass, is in a tight bun.  She is wearing a drab, unflattering business-suit, and is holding a folder threateningly.

Upon noticing you, Sergei extends two fingers, sweeps his hand to include the four of you, then rotates his hand to use the two fingers to signal you to come in.

Team, this is Director Bres, head of operations...That will do, Sergei, I can introduce myself.

I am director of the Glasgow operational center of Interpol.  Everything that goes on, through, or in conjunction with this compound is my responsibility.  That includes the explosion in the middle of Glasgow.  Thankfully, no one was injured, well, except for Dr. Krebotkin, but that terrorist doesn't count.  That's the stance Interpol is taking.  Yes, I know what actually happened.

Or I know what you reported.  So I find myself beholden to ask you: did you learn from this experience, or do you expect to blow up something in every assignment?  I have an American cop, which doesn't fill me with confidence in the non-incendiary aspect of this team's methodology, and a former member of Mossad, along with a liason to Mossad who specializes in fire, so you understand why I might feel less than fully confident in your methods.

Having said that, I'd rather have to cover the destruction of a building than have a lunatic puppet out there getting stronger and working for our enemies.  So congratulations on a successful first mission.

Williams, I am told you did very well in conjunction with Anti-Drugs, so even if this experiment fails, Interpol has a place for you. Levy, I've still got my eye on you, the reports I have received were satisfactory, if not stellar.

It has been decided to send you on a mission of some importance.  Agent Mikhailov will brief you and send you on your way.  I wanted to speak with you personally, introduce myself, and wish you luck.  We need you effective, but a degree of discretion will occasionally be necessary. Good day team.

With that, Director Bres walks out of the office, and makes her way back into the compound in general.

The borderline ass-chewing briefly takes a bit of wind out of my sails, but I rebound quickly (though I wait until after Bres has left the room to comment).

I think she's watched a few too many movies.  Just because I'm an American cop doesn't mean that I'm Dirty Harry or John McLane.  Of course, if we were workin' with some of my old EOD buddies, then I could understand.  Oh well.

Director Bres said you have a mission for us, sir?

Re: The Piper  Picked a Peck of People

In reply to Israel Levy (msg # 15):

Mossad uses different tactics to keep you on edge, sharp, ready for anything. KGB very similar, except instead of yelling at you, they made you disappear.

As to your assignment. You are being sent to the village of Wyvis, it is in the highlands on the shore of Loch Glass.  Arrangements have been made for you to stay at Wyvis Lodge for as long as it takes.  The proprietor, a Miss Dena, will be expecting you.  She is the one who contacted us about this situation.  I'm sending Rebekah and Ariel along. They will share a room, as will the two of you.

Dena is asking for help because, as of this morning, 6 children have gone missing.  We suspect a magical item at work.

Ariel operates a slide projector, the first picture is an artist's representation of the Pied Piper of Hamlin.

I will assume everyone is familiar with this tale.  If not, ask later.  We have reason to believe the pipe is real, and has magical qualities that control the minds of children.  Not much is known, except, every so often, children will go missing with no evidence of how or why, or by whom.  I believe it the work of the pipe, or perhaps the piper himself is behind it, and Director Bres and I are determined to stop it.

Also, this gives us the opportunity to see you in action of a different vein.  This must be held delicately.  We are already doing everything we can to keep this out of the press.  Keep that in mind while you're working out there, we do not want the press catching wind of disappearing children.  It could spark panic, and that would be counterproductive.

Interpol has a private airstrip for small flights.  The four of you will be boarding your plan and departing by noon. It is 15 past 8 now.

Go, gather your belongings, jackets and raincoats are on the plane. Horace should be back any minute if you need him, also, I will let the cafeteria know to pack your lunches, no inflight meal you understand.

Alright, dismissed, if you have questions, now's the time, otherwise, God's speed and good luck.

In reply to Israel Levy (msg # 19):

Nice intuition.  The general story is that the piper stole the children of a town because they refused to pay him.  In more recent times, the motive is less...I think americans would call it personal, as opposed to being business.  Really, does it matter what his motive is?  You humans get so caught up in "why's".

So far as I know the piper was never fae.  On the other hand, if a creature or being of supernatural abilities is stealing children, there are several possibilities, but not very many that leaves no trace of them afterwards.

Plus, I read the case, this isn't the first time that area's had this happen. Now, if you want a guess, I can speculate why someone would be stealing the children, but without investigation, I don't know for sure.

My first guess, if this is a human who found the pipe, and the pipe is a magical item with that power, my guess is the person is stealing the kids, then selling them.

Rebekah looks at Israel You and I have to sit in the back, less chance of shorting out the controls or the engines, that pesky sort of thing.

The plane you will be taking is a small corporate type jet, which can comfortably accommodate 20 agents. Since only 4 of you are making this trip, you have plenty of room to stretch out.

The plane lands, and two cars are awaiting you.  By 4pm, the four of you are standing in front of Wyvis Lodge, a 20 minute walk to town, though she does have bikes, or 1 jeep you can use.  Looking out from the lodge, you see Loch Glass stretching out before you, with the trees, hills, and occasional mountain ringing its shores.  Far out, shortly before the Loch bends and you can see no further, you notice a clump of trees.  A small island it appears to be, marring the otherwise pristine, mirror sheen of Loch Glass.

Dena comes outside to greet you.  She stand around 5'9"or10" and probably 210-230 lbs.  Welcome! Come in! I'll send my nephews to get your stuff.  You probably want something to drink, or maybe a nice meal.

Forgive me if I ramble.  I've had special guests before, but never Interpol agents on a case.  Off case come to relax, sure, I have a special rate for you lot, just in case you ever need a vacation.  I ain't bribing, you understand, but solve this case and the four of you might get special discounts.  The town is in a panic, as you might imagine.  But anyway, I ramble.  Let me know if you need anything, I'll help however I can.  There was talk of having the town leaders come up here to meet with you, or you could go to the town for a town meeting, but I told them to wait on their plans til you get here.  We just want the children back.

Dena shutters, and says quietly We want this to end. For good.

You've got mail

As you settle into your half of the room, you notice a little icon hopping up and down like a well caffeinated terrier.  It appears you have mail!

Dear Sucker, I am a Nigerian Prince and need your help claiming your money.

Ok, ok, so I'm not Nigerian, but I do have information.  Wyvis Scotland, 1980, authorities reported the disappearance of a child.  Interpol sent an agent to investigate, the child was recovered, the culprit was killed, and the case closed.

1950, child abductions in Wyvis, 1920, child disappearances reported around the western area of Loch Glass.  There are hints of it going on further back than that, but records are sketchy, you'd be better off finding an old person to ramble at you and hope for pay dirt.

Anything else you want my vast intellect working on, let me know, otherwise I'll see if I can dig up more to help you on this case.

Jacob's been pretty quiet the whole flight and busily studying the case files looking for patterns, looking at topographical maps and aerial photographs of the area for likely hideout locations, and quietly saying a few prayers for the kids and their families.

Investigation:  4 (+0)

We've got to find these kids soon, the odds are against finding them alive after 24 hours.  I really don't think I could handle dead children.  Please, God, anything but dead children...

After landing and meeting Dena, Jacob has a sudden flash of inspiration while offering his hand to Dena in greeting:

Jacob Williams, ma'am.  My apologies for bein' abrupt, but I was wonderin' if you know of any caves in the surroundin' area?  Could be that our kidnapper/piper/whatever might be based outta one of them.

I look at Israel:

I agree, let's take the bikes, that way we can split up if we need to.  I say we coordinate with the local cops and try to pick up the trail ASAP.  I've never worked a child abduction case before, but McKenzie told me about a couple that he worked in the late '80s.  Long story short, we're down by 7 in the 4th, the clock's tickin' and we're outta timeouts.  It's time for a Hail Mary.

In reply to Jacob Williams (msg # 28):

Dena slaps Jacobs shoulder in a sporting manner, Well aren't you definitely American.  There are bike paths and hiking trails all through the woods and hills here.  This area is mostly wooded.  The path to town is cleared, plenty of room, but it cuts right through the forest.  The trees start thinning as you go north around the edge of the loch.  There's a path goes that way, but it ends at Mt. MacGregor, oh, 8 km from here.  I know of one old cave up there, between 1 and 2 km from the path's end.

It's the cave the survivor was found in years ago.

So to answer your question, I know that one, but it is very possible there are others either in MacGregor or around it, hills, small mountains all through that area. For that matter, in the deeper woods, it's possible someone has a small cabin we don't know about.  Maybe not likely.  I don't get out as much as I use to, taking care of the Lodge keeps me busy.  Some of the townsfolk might know something.

One more thing, you mentioned working with the local cops.  Their names are Bill, the sherriff, and Frank, his deputy.  It's a small town.  They have organized a search party, but they haven't found anything.  Nothing.

Once the child leaves the town, no tracks, no cloth snagged on a branch, no ribbon fallen from hair.  It's as is they just vanish once they leave the town.

Tears are forming in Dena's eyes, and you hear the sound of a catch in her voice as she starts to tremble slightly.

Re: We have ways of getting what we need.

I'll pull Levy aside for a second:

Hey Levy, how about you and the ladies go secure the transportation and meet up with the sheriff.  Dena seems like she's holdin' somethin' back, my gut tells me she's not a suspect, maybe one of her kids was taken?

Once Levy gives us a bit of space, I return to Dena:

My apologies, ma'am, you have to excuse Levy, English is apparently his third or fourth language.  Anyway, you seem like somethin' is botherin' you.  You have kids?  I've got a son back in the States with his mother.  Here's the little stinker, his name's James.  I show her a picture from my wallet.

Re: We have ways of getting what we need.

In reply to Jacob Williams (msg # 34):

(Your rapport becomes a 6 thanks to the aspect)

Dena looks around, making sure everyone else is gone, and starts sobbing.

They took my niece!  I thought it was over, that kids wouldn't be taken in the night again, and then it started.  But it's not time yet, so I told myself it was something different.  Awful, sure, but different!  After all, the disappearances are always 30 years apart, which means if it is him, it shouldn't start until 2010!

She takes a couple of deep breathes, exhaling raggedly, looking for all the world like she needs a drink.  She directs you to the bar and a bottle of Summersisle Mead.  You open the bottle while grabbing two glasses and sit, pour, and listen.

The mead is sweet, and smooth, and a hint of apples.  You feel calmer, more relaxed, yet still alert.  You notice the affect on Dena is just as evident and quick working.

I don't know what you have heard, agent, but this place has a past.  Every 30 years a number of kids goes missing. I know it happened in '50, then it happened again in '80.  I was one of the last taken. Me and Abby. Except they found me...
She starts crying harder, torn by the memories and the guilt.  You know this face, the face of the tormented.  Suddenly you find yourself wanting something a little stronger than apples and honey.

I could see the disappointment in their faces.  If they could only find one, they want Abby, everyone wanted Abby.  Oh they were nice, they wrapped me in a blanket and hugged me and said everything would be ok.  Except it wasn't.  I was saved, and Abby lost.  and why was I spared anyway? I can see the looks they give me to this day, over twenty years later, like I had something to do with it.

I was found in that cave I told you about. I don't remember much, everything about it is vague, clouded over.

Meanwhile, outside.

In reply to GM (msg # 35):

Israel, Rebekah, and Ariel grab bikes and head into town.

Wyvis is a combination of small rural village, and tourist town.  In past years, fishing, camping, hiking, and other outdoor activities have brought a boom of tourists both foreign and domestic to Loch Glass, and Wyvis Lodge was ready to accept them before anyone else.

The locals have fought hard to retain the small town identity, and have done well, though occasionally one finds a tourist t-shirt in a shop.  Located in the highlands of Scotland, the air is cleaner, and a little cooler than Glasgow, and the town moves with the slow, stolid speed of a town that would rather be fishing than coddling tourists.  but money is money, and they have little other economy.

The sheriffs office is small but easy to find.  The sheriff greets you, and acts surprised Interpol has come all this way to investigate a case of runaways.

You watch, in a day or two those kids will come back into town, dirty, scraped, hungry, and embarrassed.  It happens every now and then, I guess it's the "mystique of the highlands loch" that's what loony ole Dena put in her brochure.

It happens every now and then, and they come back.  Dena's one of 'em.  She ran off twenty years ago with a local girl named Abby.  Something happened, she'd never say, but Abby's body was never found.  Sweet girl, Abby, hard not to like her, oh she had a temper, but it never lasted. Shook the whole town when she disappeared.

In reply to GM (msg # 35):

Stop right there, Dena.  You don't want to go down this road.  You don't want to do this to yourself.  Don't blame yourself because you came home and Abby didn't.  The only one to blame is the bastard that took you and Abby.

I pause for just a moment as some dark memories claw their way back out of the abyss I had cast them into:

I lost men in Iran, far more than I wanted to.  After I rotated back home, I spent months trying to figure out what I'd done wrong, wondering why I got to see my wife and son again when better Marines were in body bags.  I obsessed over it, what could I have done different so we all could have come home?  Maybe I'd missed something that would've tipped off the ambush we were walkin' into?  Maybe if I'd been payin' closer attention I would've seen the trip wire for that IED?  The fact is, though, that after an official inquiry and investigation, they found that I'd done nothing wrong.  In fact, I'd done everything that I should have done and that's part of why the whole squad didn't come home in bags, myself included.  It wasn't my fault, though at the time I thought I'd have felt better if it had been.  Survivor's guilt is a real bitch.

Stop beatin' yourself up and just thank God that you made it back.  There's a reason that you came back, you may or may not know what it is, but there's a reason you're here.  Maybe there was something you saw that you've blocked out for all these years.  Maybe there's something that you didn't think was important.

I swear to you, as God is my witness, Levy and I will do everything we can to get your niece back to you safe and sound.

I let this stuff sink in for a second and sip the mead a little before I go on with my questions:

Are you and Abby related?  You mentioned that these abductions have happened every thirty years, was it just you and Abby the last time?  And do you have a recent photo of your niece (and what's her name)?

Re: Meanwhile, outside.

For the most part, Israel just listens for anything the Sheriff says that could be important - he doesn't actually expect the sheriff to be particularly useful. It's more of a courtesy call.  He doesn't have much faith in small town law enforcement - problem of living in a big city, then working for the government.  He let's Ariel or Rebekah do most of the talking, observing instead.

When the meeting is done he finds a place outside, away from the town and where his is not likely to be observed and begins to attempt to track the girl via her hair.  He draws a circle in the sand and begins to work up a tracking spell.

As I can take as long as I want to do this one, and am not trying to dover a really long distance, I don't think it requires a roll (book basically says it rarely does), but that is of course, up to the GM.

Re: We have ways of getting what we need.

In reply to Jacob Williams (msg # 37):

to Jacob: My niece's name is Ildena. We were both named for my grandmother.  I have a picture from a couple months ago, she came up here to celebrate the beginning of summer.

As to Abby, no, we weren't related, though you might have thought so.  We were close, though we had little in common.  And we use to fight like the dickens, but it never lasted long.

The town elders covered it all up as best they could.  Abby and I were not the only kids taken that year.  We were numbers 15 and 16.

It's always 16.  From the time of the first kidnapping, there are 13 days. The first 6 are always one at a time, always at night.  Then, as though it was getting stronger, or experienced, it takes 8 in one night. The last night, the 13th night, is when it takes the final 2.

I tried to fight it.  I know this sounds crazy, but I spent the last 2 decades trying to find a way to stop it, if it came back.  I slowed it down, it usually gets the children faster than this, and I'm pretty sure I stopped it one or two nights, and now the time is almost up.  But that's why I think whatever it is took Ildena, to get at me.

We don't have much time! I called Interpol because no one in the town will help me.  They think I'm crazy or involved in it, or something.

Two more things you need to know.  It happens every 30 years, but not this time, which means something changed, but I don't know what. The other thing is that tonight is the 11th night.  The 8 will be taken either tonight or tomorrow night, and the last 2 taken on Friday night, the 13th of July.

In reply to Israel Levy (msg # 38):

The pull is weak at first, but grows stronger. After a few moments of concentration you have the trail, though it is tenuous.  The magic is pointing you north by northeast, towards the mountainous region of this area.

Being former Mossad, you are pretty certain the cave theory is going to pan out.  Whoever is doing this needs a place close to town, but not too close, and the elevation makes it very difficult to sneak up on the cave.

After conferring with Rebekah, you decide the cave is probably short-term, though the magic suggests Ildena is still there.  It is getting late to make the trip to go searching mountain caves.

<Let's face it Israel, we got here too late to go up into the mountains today.  I'd say our best options for now are to regroup with Jacob, and possibly speaking with parents of the other missing children, perhaps getting more hair or personal items.  They may not be forthcoming or helpful though, if they have the same mentality the sheriff has.>

I'm furiously taking notes while Dena's telling me all of this.

If you're crazy, they'll have to lock us both up, the whole reason I'm with Interpol now and not in Bossier City is because I shot a vampire.

Our intelligence suggests that it's something like the Pied Piper, but that's all we had before we came here.  Are there any local legends related to this or has there always been some sort of "official story?"  Is there someone we could talk to that would know when this all started?  Is there any sort of common factor between victims, is it always girls, do their parents have common work, anything?

<OOC>I feel like I'm focusing on the past occurrences looking for insight into how to stop this instead of trying to find the kids that are missing right now, but we need to have some idea of what we're involved in before we "storm the castle."  </OOC>

Knowing you take her seriously and are trying to help, Dena straightens up a bit, takes several breathes to calm herself, and then puts herself to the task of answering your questions.
No connections I know of except they all live around here, and are under 12. You know, now you mention it, the official story has always been they ran off into the woods.  There are wild animals out there, not as many as there use to be, but enough to be dangerous for a lone, unarmed child.  The official story has also always covered up the exact number, or that it happens regularly.

The only person I would trust, the only one I know who actually admits to believing something unusual is going on, is Granny Bri.  She lives in a cottage not far from here.  I need to warn you though, she's 107, and a little hard to talk to sometimes.

She's also Abby's great-grandmother.  I have a map of this area, it shows the bike trails and hiking paths, but I added a few extra sites to it, like Granny's, so hikers don't go bothering her by accident.

Of duct tape and nipple clamps

In reply to Jacob Williams (msg # 43)

Jacob hops on a bicycle, wishing desperately for the motorcycle left behind this time.  The team reunites as Israel and the girls are headed back up the path from town.  Jacob, having a map to Granny's house, leads the way.

You find a cottage that looks like it came out of a story.  Probably the type with witches and possibly ovens and naughty children.  The yard is in need of care, and vines have covered one side of the house, except for a small hole cute out to allow  for the window.

It is late afternoon/early evening.  The day has lost the heat of midday, and, this being the highlands, the air is becoming pleasantly cool. Pleasantly cool for two of you, Israel and Rebekah are both a little colder than comfortable.

The Vincent would sure be a lot better than this stupid bicycle, though I suppose the bicycle doesn't cause nearly the disruption to the rustic setting that a motorcycle would.  Of course, it would be kind of cool to feel like Marlon Brando right now...

I dismount the bicycle and ever so slightly shake my head at it disapprovingly before walking to the front door of the cottage.

How do you interview a 107 year old witness?  They didn't cover this at the academy.  Here goes nothing...

I knock on the door, loudly but politely and stand at ease in front of the door, waiting patiently for Granny Bri (which I'm going to assume is not her legal name and I'm kicking myself for not asking Dena WHAT her actual name is, addressing a potential witness as "Granny Bri" doesn't exactly sound official enough for an Interpol agent).  When she (or her caretaker, also didn't ask that) arrives, I'll formally introduce myself and present my badge.

Good evening, ma'am.  I'm Agent Williams and this is Agent Levy, we're here investigatin' the disappearin' children.  If you have the time, may we ask you a few question?

The Life & Times of Brighid Bres

In reply to Jacob Williams (msg # 45):

The door opens to reveal a red-headed girl of about 7.  You can't put your finger on it, but there just seems to be something special about the girl.  Further in you see a guy of probably 16 or 17, fairly obviously her brother, looking to see who is at the door.

Who is it? Tell 'em t'g'way if they're selling something.  Well, unless it's sweets.  Or if they're tax men just shut the door in their face! Don't talk to no revenuers!

The girl decides to let you in, since you don't look like the taxman, and she doesn't see where you appear to be selling anything.  She's a little disappointed you aren't bearing sweets though.

Well ma'am, from what my partner has told me and from what Dena said, you're the only person we've met so far that has a real clue what's goin' on.  So how about we tell you what we know and you can fill in the blanks?

So far, we know that every thirty years, 16 children are taken in the night.  It happens over thirteen nights, startin' with 1 kid a night until the 12th night when it takes 8 and then the final 2 on the last night.  The only connection between the children is that they're from this village and they've all been under 12 years old.  The last time this happened was 1980, so this time is 10 years early.

I check my notes to see if I missed anything.

Our intelligence from Interpol suggests that we're dealin' with a Pied Piper scenario.  Is there any sort of a deal that the village has reneged on?

When the smoke starts, he mentally readies a shield spell, preparing to cast it over the group if things go bad.

...and then it got weird...

Jacob scoops up the smoldering root as though his life depends on it, twists, and is aiming for the window when the oddest thing happens, certainly one of the last on the list of things he would have expected to occur at this time: the root bit him. A swift, sharp bite, just enough to draw a bright bead of blood, not enough to keep the plant from flying out the window.

The air begins to clear almost immediately.

Rebekah and Ariel quickly scratch a circle outside and pull Israel in, then activate it, protecting them from the magic assault on their minds. Working in tandem with Rebekah, a shield is brought up around the house.

Israel recognizes the root as the ugly little face bites Jacob then sails out the window.  It is a root in the Mandragora, or Mandrake family.  This one was old and dried, which is why it didn't try screaming at you.  A little more blood might have revitalized it enough though.  Rebekah heads around to deal with the root, it would not be good for a child or anyone else to stumble upon it.

As herbal remedies goes...here's the list.  A couple of key ingredients are missing from your area, but some of it can usually be found in the average kitchen these days. Fresh is better, but dried beats nothing.  The one plant you really need though is called a Maidenhair Fern. The only place in Northern europe it grows is Ireland.

Thankfully you know a druid who lives in Ireland right?  I'll contact Druid spell, and see about getting you the fern, you start on the rest of it, shouldn't be hard, decently common plants in those parts.

Thorn: I'll stay here.  If Jacob feels like catching up, then we will later.  Besides, it probably doesn't hurt to have an extra pair of eyes here at the house.  Something unusual is going on, and I don't like it.  Why now, why the accelerated timeline?  Why attack the old woman?  And to use a mandrake and a mental assault?  It's overkill unless you suspect supernatural forces at play, and there was no reason to.  No one knows about the two of you, or shouldn't, and I wasn't here.

Whoever, or whatever this is, something has it scared, and that's bad for you.  If they're scared they'll be on guard, and quicker to take action.  Just be careful. Here, take this, it isn't much, but it might help you, Levy.

You reach down and accept a leaf from Thorn.  It feels warm in your hand.

Winter Court detector. Limited in power, I'm not going to just give you a magical fae detector.  It will last until sunrise.  It'll start growing cold if Winter Court fae are nearby.

With that, the three of you go outside, where it is quite dark, but enough light is shining from the moon and stars, and this is not a city, that you can see the path back to town.

You ride, the girls close by, and once you reach the village, you are certain you are being followed by no less than 3 individuals.  From what you could tell, two were in the woods, one is following you but being careful not to be seen.

As you move to position, you think you hear, in the distance, the sound of pipe music calling from the darkness.

I'm using a fate point to invoke Family Man or Semper Fi, Do or Die.  My reasoning is that since I'm a family man and can't stand the thought of of failing to rescue these kids, I'm going to push myself through anything that stands between me and completing the mission (Semper Fi, Do or Die).  Basically, even if it kills me, I'm not letting Levy go it alone and I'm not going to fail these kids and their families.

I shake my head and stand up.

No, Levy, these kids don't have time for me to sit around just because I've got a headache.  Let's go catch this bastard.

In reply to Jacob Williams (msg # 65):

I should have been paying more attention, I'll compel Semper Fi, You don't want to be a burden or the one left behind.  You'll see the mission through.

instead of spending a fate, take one.  Like I said, I should have paid better attention and compelled it.

for that matter, I'm compelling Former Mossad for Levy.  You can choose seeking out the follower, or finding the piper, either one, but to the exclusion of most else.

of course, either of you may choose to spend fate to ignore it, meaning jacob stays in bed, and israel gets to dance around town at night.

Resetting the scene

In reply to Jacob Williams (msg # 67):

Israel, Rebekah, and Ariel exit the cottage and start down the path towards town.  As they are leaving, Jacob rises slowly from the couch, thanks Granny Bri for her help, then heads outside.  The cool night air feels refreshing and does much to clear his head.

As Jacob rides down the path, going a little slower at first, then picking up speed, he notices someone in the woods, watching.  As Jacob enters the town, he spots the town deputy following the team.

(well, now we know the identity of two of the followers, since technically Jacob just became one)

In reply to GM (msg # 71):

The town goes dark as windows latch shut and lights are extinguished. Across the village parents lock up, and pretend nothing is wrong, praying their child is not the one taken, that the piper will pass by their house this night.

The high pitched sound of a wood pipe comes drifting through the darkness.  Eight doors unlatch and open.  Eight children, 5 boys, 3 girls, step outside and begin walking towards the sound.

With tears in his eyes, Deputy Frank looks at Jacob and whispers, hoarsely : Don't you think I'd stop it if I could? That we all would? There are parents watching their children walk away into the darkness.  You think they have a choice?

The village is safe, so long as we give them a sacrifice.  They will be honoured, the families compensated.  And the village is safe. So long as we don't fight back.  So long as we let it happen.  We were warned, twenty years ago, when that Interpol guy showed up like the wrath of God. Him and that devil woman.  Now here you are, and who knows what the piper is gonna do.

In the darkness, just outside the edge of the village, the piper jaunts as he plays his tune.  Israel stands at the edge of the city, eight children walking in his direction.

As Israel Levy looks at the children walking toward him, a voice speaks from behind

This is the arrangement.  It does not concern you, outsider.  You are not of this village, not blood to the chosen.  Leave.  Now. And you may go in peace.

Conviction = 3 (just in case that's needed for my mocking banter)

Ah, spooky voice from behind.  Rationally, I should be completely terrified right now. But there's just something about jackasses that kidnap kids that boils my blood.  Reminds me to much of what happened with Seth.  Kidnappers don't deserve respect - only mocking.
Israel spins dramatically on his heal and faces the voice with a lopsided grin.
"Good evening. As a duly designated representative of Interpol, I order you to cease any and all supernatural activity and return forthwith to your place of origin or to the nearest convenient parallel dimension."

He leaves a brief pause, to allow the villain/creature/whatever to realize he/she/it is being mocked and then adds. "Come on, Ghostbusters. I'd have thought everyone knew that one.  Ok, let's go old school then. 'And the Lord said to Moses, Do not give any of your children to be sacrificed, for you must not profane the name of your God.'"

Israel mouths a silent prayer, then pulls out his blasting rod and takes a defensive stance should the piper respond with violence.

To Jacob: Deputy Frank trembles harder, his voice cracking with fear and shame.

Fighting will only make it worse! The others won't stand for it, not after the last time.  150 years ago something happened, the town elders made a deal with...something, and all these years later, we're still upholding the deal.  I don't know details, we are warned not to ask!  But something is wrong! They came early, and someone is fighting them.  We're doomed if we stand against them!

With that he crumples to the ground, cursing himself for a coward.

To Israel: You see a short figure, just over 5 feet.  In the dim light of the night sky you can make out at least 2 more shapes between you and the piper, who is still dancing and piping as the children move towards him.

As you look at the closest figure, something is nagging at the back of your mind.  There's no way this guy is normal. Something is wrong. But what?

You were warned.  Interference will not be tolerated! The exchange must occur uninterrupted!

A mist is flowing past him, stopping in a line right in front of you.  For a moment you wonder why, then realize, the mist is stopping at the very edge of the village.  Almost like a liquid meeting a barrier.  At this point, the first of the children, a girl of about 6 is mere feet from the mist. You take the briefest of moments to look, but her  eyes are glazed, you surmise she is not aware of what is going on.

The air is tense, the short men are watching you intently, waiting to see what you will do as they prepare to take the children.

And the piper plays on.

Midnight in the Village of good and Evil

In reply to Israel Levy (msg # 78):

Frank, why don't you take the kids home, I'll lead the officers to the Elders. Sheriff Bill says as he emerges from the dark.

If you two will follow me, the Elders are going to want to talk to you, too. And I guess it's pointless to ask either party if this can't wait til morning, so come on, Town Hall is this way, they'll be making their way there right now.

You, Israel and Jacob, follow Sheriff Bill as Deputy Frank leads the children back to their homes, their parents fearfully hugging them, not sure if this is a pass, or a temporary reprieve, whether the hope is real, or simply dangling just out of reach.

As you enter Town Hall, Jacob gets a text message from Ben, of all sources.

Check your frelling e-mail!

The Town Hall itself is an old building, dating back over 150 years, and the architecture is most definitely dated.  There are portraits of prominent townsfolk of the past, most specifically the Mayors, but the founders are presented, and there is a group picture of the ruling elders dated 1850.

Sheriff Bill stops at a door and says Right through here gentlemen

Odd? Here?

In reply to Jacob Williams (msg # 80):

A special e-mail address has been set up for your use in communicating with Ben.

(I don't remember Israel giving that permission, but obviously Israel isn't packing a smartphone or a laptop.  If you are packing a laptop, the whole flash bang incident reformatted the laptop into a paperweight.  We're going to say Israel gives Jacob the password and username for the emergency e-mail address, thus granting permission to Ben to talk to Jacob, more or less as a liaison.)

The culprits aren't fae.  True nature should be seen with Wizardy sight.  Or sniffing 3-eye.  Should be using a mortal as the piper.  Working as middlemen between the village and the purchaser of the children, most likely Winter Court.  Be warned, you don't have jurisdiction to intervene on the trade in the NeverNever.

Also, beware the power behind the village, the deal, and I haven't found it exactly, but it is between the village elders, the pipers, and the ones being traded to.

Israel, important note: spellcasting using rituals, circles, or drawing on ley lines/nodes may be unstable.  Of course, this also means you can channel energy and just let it go, hoping it doesn't destroy the time/space continuum, or unleash the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.

The instability could have something to do with the original deal. That place is sitting on an unstable confluence of ley lines atop an active magical node.  If that site were used for, say, holy rituals, sacrifices, burial grounds, or the such, that area could easily have become magically unstable. To the point where it would have leaked.  Back up to 1850, or maybe even before, when people were much more superstitious, and they might have been willing to make a deal with someone for protection.

One more thing, from what I can deduce from the rumors, old articles, and a spirit who owed me a favor, whatever is going on, the town elders are part of it, actively, not just seeing to it being upheld, but probably beneficiaries in some way.  Be careful if invited to meet them.  You don't need Ackbar to tell you it's a trap.

Oh its definitely a trap, and the elders are definitely in on this. In fact, see that picture of the Elders from 1850 over there? Twenty shekalim says we're about to meet the those exact same guys and that this is about some kind of immortality thing.

I'm sure you've seen and done terrible things, but we have to protect the greater good! We have to make the correct decisions others like you will carry out.

Everyone here has given children to the trade.  And it isn't as though they are dying.  We wouldn't abide that, no, we aren't pagans.  We aren't monsters, though right now you think we are.

But you're missing the big picture.

He stands and gestures to a map of Scotland.

There is a phenomenon here in Scotland, I'm told it happens in a few other regions in the world, but no one region as large as Scotland.  Our lochs, it seems, operate as nodes of magical power.  Almost all of them. It isn't unusual for a lake to be a node, but with this regularity, it is.  Also, Scotland has no nodes which are not lochs.  Which makes Loch Glass a node of power.  There are also two ley lines running through the village, which is saturated with magical energy still from its days as a holy place for druidic rituals.  The bleed-off was worse than nuclear radiation.

Ask yourself: if what we're doing is so bad, why haven't the Wardens come to stop us? The council doesn't come here. Interpol has even left us alone until recently. But we've seen to that.  You'll be getting orders in the morning to pack up and leave.

There is nothing you can legally do to us officers.  This is well out of the jurisdiction of Interpol, and it does not violate the Unseelie Accords, strictly speaking.

(Ok, had to figure out how to work this out.  Mr. Mayor has used his pomposity and windbagginess to attack with a 6 against mental stress.Took me ages to decide on mental or social. Now that I've determined mental, I really don't understand social stress.

Mayor got a 6, Levy got a modified 6, Jacob got a 1.  Jacob just got hit 5 on social stress.  This means you just got argued down and will go quietly to the jail cell to wait for the call from Interpol in the morning.  Unless you want to take a consequence. Be aware, to take a consequence, you have to regain 4 stress at this point, which is a moderate, and returns you to 1.  Israel can choose whatever he'd like, you're still in this.)

My ancestors fled from the Spanish inquisition - those men claimed the high ground as well - it does not diminish the evil."

"You say 'people like us make the law' and you call for the 'greater good.'  I have heard that before as well. Hitler, Torquemada, Stalin and Robspeierre all claimed to act for the 'greater good.'

"You act as if you are above your people.  The British philosopher John Locke said of govenrment power -  "It is a power, that hath no other end but preservation, and therefore can never have a right to destroy, enslave, or designedly to impoverish the subjects.  Never enslave - such as you have done with your children.

"You say, 'The warden's don't stop us'  as if that means something as well.  The warden's only stop those that threaten their own. It is not their job to stand for the pople - it's ours."

"I do not stand before you as an agent of Interpol, but as a man - one who serves the creator of all mankind.  Your children cry out - 'Miy-yäqûm liy im-m'rëiym miy-yit'yaTZëv liy im-Poálëy äwen' - Who will rise up for me against the wicked? Who will take a stand for me against evildoers?"

(ooc:Patrick Swayze's b-day, RIP!  Which means if you die, you get to come back as a ghost with a black lady to speak for you.  Or you can take a ragtag group of kids and fight commies if they take over your hometown.)

The Mayor, standing before his seat, lifts his glasses and rubs the bridge of his nose. Upon sitting, he sighs heavily, looks at the other members, several of whom nod to him or make some sign of deference to him.

We are not going to change your mind, nor you ours.  You think we've never heard it before? It is as Locke said, the goal of government is preservation.  Every 30 years, 16 children are taken somewhere else.  They are not slaves, they are not eaten, or killed, or raped, or forced to work in abhorrent conditions, as our parents did, and even some of us.  Designedly impoverish subjects?  One of the taken children recently came to visit here, she is personal secretary to a Queen.  And that's impoverishing?  Ah, but the families are broken.  There again, the village is healthy, and safe, and thriving.  There have been more children born here than ever would have been possible if not for our actions.  They can sleep well at night, knowing we have protected them.

A tall, proud woman stands, her face, handsome, if not pretty, strong, she is a woman tried and tested.

And how dare you criticize us? You who quote scripture with one hand, and cast spells with the other? I am sure you will claim it is God's boon.  His blessing.  But where is proof it is of divine origin?  No, it is simply a power some are born with.  And you, who have the power, believe it makes you fit to judge others. It does.  The only error is in the criteria you use with which to judge.

One last thing.  If you don't see a way out, or a way forward, think of this kind of like a tv show.  Right before the commercial break it looks bleak for our protagonists, and it is only after the commercial does a solution present itself.  Of course, sometimes you can't find a way forward because you've completely forgotten/overlooked something.)

"I need you to text Ben.  See if he can find the actual contract - and pour over it.  I'm looking for any kind of loophole here.  Anything that can be used against them to void the contract.  Also, find out what would happen if I destroyed the Piper's pipe - just in case things get nasty.

Re: High Horse, away! - clarification

In reply to Israel Levy (msg # 90):

(Note: I'm going to assume Jacob sends the text, and not wait for confirmation this time in order to move the scene along. )

So now I'm a paranormal paralegal, my mother's be so proud, assuming of course I had a mother.  The mayor is right though, by strict interpretation of the rules set forth by the Unseelie Accords, there's nothing you can do.

Well, you.  Because neither of you are members of any signatory group of the Unseelie Accords.  More specifically, the elders, or this arrangement, would have to cause grievance to a signatory or someone representing a signatory.

One thing, in this case, if you could find a relative, have to be blood kin, they could appeal to a signatory to challenge the elders on their behalf.  It's a tight fit though.  Since the trade agreement is to culminate on Friday night, you aren't allowed to delay that.  You either have to get everything together before it's over, or wait and challenge after the fact.

Dena, the lodge owner, could challenge for restitution, but not for release of the children or termination of the arrangement.

I looked into nearby signatories.  You aren't gonna like what I found though boss. These guys have been in business a while.  The Council is bribed, more or less.  Mortal authorities have been corrupted, all this covered up.

Your only options I see would be a faerie, have to be fairly high ranking, and that means striking a deal with it.  Or, uh, there is someone just South of you a little ways, but I have to discourage you from that.  Really, it isn't a good idea, take your chances with the elders.

Oh, last thing, from what I can tell, if you snap that pipe, absolutely nothing will happen except you getting 2 pieces of pipe and splinters. From what I can tell, with the proper ingredients, they aren't that hard to make, and the ingredients just happen to be indigenous to that area. They probably have another, or can get one.  Has to be a vanilla mortal though. I think.  You could always try it.  Play a tune around your partner while thinking: You will bring me a cup of tea.  If he does, you can use it, or he has a strong enough mind to block it.

Jacob fixes the mayor with a steely-eyed glare:

The children ain't harmed, huh?  I'd bet 3 months pay that none of YOUR kids were ever taken.  The families ain't hurt?  You don't know a damn thing about pain and anguish 'til you lose your kid.  It burns me up that I can't be there to hug my son every day when I come home.  It's like someone stabbed a KABAR in my heart and twists on it every day that I can't see him and tell him that I love him and I'm proud of him.  And that's just because his mother and I are havin' problems, he ain't been killed or stolen away from me by some arrogant bastard that thinks he's justified and doin' the right thing, there's still a way that I can see him and hold him again, unlike what you've done to these families.  You're wrong about me, I'm not just another dumb jarhead.  I'm a father.  I turn and look every single one of them in the eye.  If any of you had a shred of humanity 'n' decency, you couldn't ask this of your people.  No, you're content to sit here in your ivory tower gettin' fat off the sweat of your people's brow.  When they speak of you, if they dare speak of you, it's always quietly because they fear you. As Thomas Jefferson said, "When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. When the government fears the people, there is liberty."  And as Benjamin Franklin said, people willin' to trade their freedom for temporary security deserve neither and will lose both, your town is livin' proof of that.  You have no right to rule these people, you forfeited that when you gave away their children and their liberty.  And for what?  Youth?  Immortality?  Power?  "Whenever a man has cast a longin' eye on offices, a rottenness begins in his conduct."  You're whitewashed tombs filled with nothin' but death and decay!

The Great Debate

In reply to Jacob Williams (msg # 94):

In the end, perhaps your words affected them, or at least some of them.  The less convicted won't meet your eyes, or look at the leadership. The Mayor and the Tall Woman, however, seem unphased.  Their conviction and belief were forged through long decades of tyranny, and manipulation and fear.

As the meeting of the two sides grows longer, Deputy Frank enters the room, and whispers in Sheriff bill's ear.  He looks up sharply, questions him quietly, then quickly scribbles a message on a sheet of paper, and hands it to the mayor.

I see.  Gentlemen, it appears we have much to discuss. If you would be so kind as to give us time to talk amongst ourselves. Food can be brought for you if you like, there is also a room you can use to get some sleep if you would prefer.

He turns and speaks with the others in hushed tones. It is obvious none are pleased with the discussion.

At this point, it is well past midnight, you are both tired from a long day (it is Thursday morning now, you left Glasgow less than 24 hours ago). The Elders will be deliberating privately for a time.  You have been offered food, a place to get a nap.  They have locked the doors, you are not suppose to leave.

I don't think both of us should sleep at the same time and I'm not sure I trust their food.  If you don't mind, though, I should probably take the first shift on the nap, after effects of the mandrake and all that crap.

I really hate asking that, but I'm no good to either of us if I can't stay awake and there's only so much adrenaline can do.

The Resolution

In reply to Israel Levy (msg # 97):

You have been in the room just over an hour when the Mayor, Tall Lady, and Sheriff knock at the door.  They step inside the room with a slow, tired pace.

Mayor speaks up first: You've put us in a tight spot boys. This was always contingent upon keeping it quiet.  Once the public knows, or at least the supernatural community at large, we're through.

We can't harm you, that would bring too much attention, so we're stopping it.  Everything.  There will be no more deal, no more children taken.  Tonight marks the end of our part in this matter.

If you wish to know what happens to the children, or rescue the ones taken, I suggest you take that up with the Piper and his Troupe, up in the mountains, or with the buyers. They won't be around until Friday though.

Now, if you will excuse us, we have packing to do.  We intend to be gone before the village proper knows what is going on.

Feel free to gloat. You win, we lose, and now I have to run with my tail between my legs.

They begin departing the room single file, the sheriff last.

Frank'll be around in a bit with some food, if you need anything else, he'll get it for you. You really don't get it though.  This town is dead without that deal.  Not that you care about us.  We just didn't fit your sensibilities.  You never even found out what the deal was for, but judged them that harshly.

You'll find out soon enough though.

Finished speaking, the sheriff turns, and heads for the door.

Re: The Resolution

Israel raises an eyebrow, than leans in to the doorjam, blocking the sheriff's exit.  "You said, and I quote - 'This is about money, and town prosperity.  If a little prestige and respect get thrown in so much the better.' And you expected us to act differently?  Your own words accuse you. If you truly care about the people of this city then you will tell me - in exact, specific, and boringly minute detail, exactly what the contract was, who it was with, and why anyone would sacrifice their children for it. Or you can do what your Mayor just did. Leave, give up, flee.  Unwilling or unable to defend his people."

Israel stares at the sheriff with conviction in his eyes and a menace in his voice that hasn't gone away since confronting the elders.  "Let me make one thing real clear to you.  I don't care about your property.  I don't care about your money, I don't care about power or wealth or any of the idiotic temptations that normally effect people in power.  I care about the innocent.  I have spent my life preserving the innocent in an area of the world where my people are hated just for existing. I will continue to to that whether at home, here, or on the other side of the globe. That means if what we just did saved a few, but put the remainder of the people in jeopardy, than I will stay here and fight until everyone of your people are free of whatever petty tyrant has set themselves up over them.  Now you, and any men you have, can either help us - or get the frell out."

I will save these gorram people whether they want me to or not!

Well S**t.  I don't know all the details of the deal.  You didn't see my face in that picture.  On the other hand, I'm 80 and look 50, and it's because I've towed the line since they brought me here.

Agents, this place is going to be a smoking crater in less than 48 hours, and I don't know what it would take to stop it.  I'll get Frank, and we can evacuate the town, better to have done that needlessly than lose everyone because we couldn't stop what's coming.

They're going to blame you, Agent Levy.  I know that much.  Something about unstable magically whatever, and basically the presence of wizards can make it worse, especially if you do a lot of casting.

One more thing.  when the elders said the deal is over, they meant after the remaining children are taken.  After you came to the hall, the piper's troupe went and got kids.  No one said they had to be entranced.  They're the ones you have to worry about now.  They have the kids, and tomorrow night will make the exchange. They won't release the kids without a fight, and just so you know, they aren't human.

With that the Sheriff heads out to start getting people out of town.

There's the e-mail address, you might want to just give a few people the address and make it look like a reference source you've found.)

As you leave the room and head for the front door, two men are carrying Deputy Frank on a stretcher. You've both seen wounds and beatings before, and you realize he'll survive, but he took a severe beating.  Probable concussion, broken arm and possibly some cracked ribs, not to mention the bruises and cuts.

He smiles weakly when he sees you and calls you over, the effort causing him to cough painfully.  I tried to protect...didn't work too well for me.  Your partners gave 'em hell.  Almost literally.  The town is quiet again, but out past the village limits, it's war.

Parents have swarmed the pipers, trying to get children back, or make them pay for siblings, uncles, aunts, that sort of thing.  But we've only got til sunrise, then the pipers will be in hiding, and we can't track them through the mountains.

I squeeze his hand in a gentle yet manly fashion.

You done good, Frank.  Assumin' we survive this and don't get canned, there may be a place for you at the agency.  We could use more men with your guts.  Just somethin' to think about once you're on your feet again.  Good job, now it's my turn.

First off, we need to head to the airfield and grab some gear.  I'm thinking extra ammo, any special ammo we have, the M4, binoculars, body armor, a roll of duct tape, and a satellite phone if we have one.  Then we need to go regroup with Rebekah and Ariel and get the lay of the battle.

Jacob's a bit quieter than usual while gearing up and "gettin' tactical," he's pushing all of his worries about Krystal and James into the closet along with any of his other doubts.  Right now, these kids don't need him to be a father, they need him to be the warrior.  They need him to eat lightning and crap thunder.  They don't need him to be an investigator with an international occult taskforce, they need him to be a devildog spawned from hell itself.  It's not bloodlust or rage that drives him, it's the ruthless professionalism of one of the most prestigious and elite fighting forces on the planet.  The opposing force awaits and it's time to show them why the USMC is feared and respected throughout the world.

Right now, it is 2 am.  You have both passed your second endurance checks, so you are ok for now. To drive a car or jeep to the plane and back will take about an hour. Two pilots aboard the jet, their job is to hold down the fort and operate as base.  Also as communications center.  Speaking of which, Home base wants an update.

+1 body armor is available, weapons within reason (assault rifle, various pistols, clubs, stun guns, what I mentally consider standard.  This includes tear gas canisters but no bombs)

If asked nicely, I think we can come up with a Rambo headband.  For Jacob, there is also a GPS loaded with the local map, with trackers on him and Ariel.  You also have 4 trackers to be used at your discretion.

Ariel's tracker shows her to be in the area of Dena's Lodge, as you look in that direction, the sky is red, lit up like a fire.

Once they're in the vehicle he adds, "Atomic batteries to power. Turbines to speed. Ready to move out!"

The next few minutes are spent annoying his partner signing, "Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na...Batman!"

I gun the engine and haul ass to the lodge and strike up the Marine Corp anthem as we're approaching.

    From the Halls of Montezuma,
    To the shores of Tripoli;
    We fight our country's battles
    In the air, on land, and sea;
First to fight for right and freedom
And to keep our honor clean:
We are proud to claim the title
    Of United States Marine.

Our flag's unfurled to every breeze
    From dawn to setting sun;
We have fought in every clime and place
    Where we could take a gun;
In the snow of far-off Northern lands
    And in sunny tropic scenes;
You will find us always on the job
    The United States Marines.

Here's health to you and to our Corps
    Which we are proud to serve;
In many a strife we've fought for life
    And never lost our nerve;
If the Army and the Navy
    Ever look on Heaven’s scenes;
They will find the streets are guarded
    By United States Marines.

(gah! selective reading! right now yer lucky you aren't fighting Simon Bolivar and Pablo Neruda with an army of exiled post WW2 nazis. which would be ironic considering Neruda was commie. I've got a Culture of South America final in a week.)

Several things stand out at you as you approach the lodge.

first: The building was obviously set on fire, as you can see parts of it still smoldering, but no longer blazing.

Second: The ground around the building is soaked, as though here and only here got a storm.

Third: Not all that liquid is water, you see signs of fighting, and blood mingling with the water in some of the pools.

Fourth:  As you get close, you see Ariel's unconscious form leaned against a tree.  There are scratches and bruises on her, but it doesn't appear life-threatening at first glance. Several children are huddled around her.  Standing next to her, guarding them from a swarm of small men, is Dena, bleeding from her forehead, one arm hanging at her side, with a large branch in her right hand, the end blazing merrily.  She swings the branch, keeping them back, delivering a sharp crack to the head to one who gets too close.

Dena fights like a woman possessed.  Long ridiculed and viewed with suspicion, she vents twenty years of frustration this night, fighting the nightmares of her youth.

She has fought like a warrior poet, but you can tell she won't last much longer against such superior numbers.

Horny little goat people

In reply to Jacob Williams (msg # 117):

There is a shutter through the collective group, you hear murmurs of ...oompa loompa...

They are obviously not happy as they shuffle away from the children they came to take, the unconscious girl who scared the crap out of them, Dena, who fought them like a rottweiler versus a rottweiler's weight in chihuahuas, or the crazy American with big guns, or the Israeli who has video game powers.

(I didn't fully realize it before, but internationally, Americans have traditionally been associated with, well, the American Cowboy. Big guns, shoot outs, violent for violent's sake.  a little crazy and uncouth.  then the Israeli, you step on their foot, they burn your house. A little country in a sea of nations who want nothing as badly as to see them dead.  And it hasn't happened.)

For a moment, it looks like they shimmer, when you, Jacob, then Israel, look again, it's almost like looking at a 3-D image without the glasses.  You see the short men, but now there is another image imposed over that, one with horns and furry legs.  You aren't highly educated in the supernatural, but you recognize a satyr when you see one. Beady eyes look at you, surprised as they realize you are seeing through the glamour.

We leave.  Bother this place, these people, no more.  The (Something) tells us to go. Assuming neither of you speak goaat, you don't pick up one of the words.

The Satyrs look nervously at one another, then the back ranks slip into the darkness. Three stay behind, from what you, Jacob, can figure, two are bigger, with larger horns, probably the leaders of the group, or at least the ones sent here. One is small, possibly a child or female, it's kinda hard to tell and you're new at this.

We trouble the town no more.  Sunrise soon, no satyr trouble town then. Craziness in town.  Satyr acting like non-Satyr. Take too many, take adults, attack people.  Attack old woman.  There is fog in head.  Clouds our minds

Re: Horny little goat people

In reply to Jacob Williams (msg # 119):

We satyrs taught men how to make pipes.  Our magic comes from us, not the pipe, for man, he needs magic pipe.  He made another, one that works on us. But it wouldn't work on <goaat word>, too strong for little man pipe.  which means <goaat> is against us too.

they all seem very worried about that thought.

there is cave, in the mountain, they take the taken there.  When ready, they are moved to the trading spot. I do not know how they move them to the spot.

We do not know for sure. Water, not mountain.  Not far cave from water!

Re: Horny little goat people

As much as I love to talk, I don't think we can spend anymore time here.  Rivkah's already up the mountain and the town is apparently in civil war.  We need to get up to the mountain caves and end this.

Ooh, Action rather than words, what a change!

Shut up subconscious, nobody asked you.

Re: Horny little goat people

I agree, first we need to get these people safe.  Dena, can you get these kids into the lodge and bunker down until we can get back to you?

I'm going to check Ariel's injuries, make sure there's nothing life-threatening, and carry her into the lodge with Dena and the rest.

In reply to Israel Levy (msg # 123):

Israel, you get a strange feeling, then realize someone has put a charm on you, and probably Jacob as well. You can now see the satyr's true forms unless they really fight to keep it secret.

As the fighting here at the lodge ends, several adults come running, looking for their children.  You see them embrace Dena, thanking her, and you.  The kids and Ariel are taken inside an area of the lodge that didn't burn.

Dena looks at you, obviously tired. Thanks for the help soldier! You got good timing.  We're going to set up as an infirmary.  If you find injured, send them this way.

Don't mention it, ma'am.  Few things put the fear of God into someone like a Marine and his rifle.  We get through all this and the first round's on me.

I check my gear again right quick before looking at Levy:

Let's roll.

An hour to sunrise.

Dena points you in the direction of a path that will lead all the way there, and tells you how to find the cave.

As you start the jeep down the path, you pick up a message from the pilot, it's fuzzy, but he says he has to go, top priority orders for him to return to Glasgow to pick up reinforcements.

<Grey>Repeat: Director Bres wants you to locate, and if possible apprehend, the Mayor.  Any of the other elders if you can, but most especially the Mayor, a woman described as tall, solemn and unpleasant.  It is important they not escape, but of course your top priority are the kids.  Just keep an eye and ear out for them, or entrust it to townsfolk, something.  Someone's gotta pay for this mess, and they are favorite candidates.</Grey>

At the foot of the mountain, the jeep starts sputtering.  You see Thorn waiting at the base of a trail leading upwards.

Nice to see you alive! Those little devils put up a fight, and of course I'm not at my best at night.  They took the little girl at the old woman's house.  Be careful you two, someone's working magic up there.  From the feel, they're not all that strong, but experienced at what their doing.  Sort of the opposite of you, Levy. Their potential is low, but they've done the same handful of magic so often they are good at it weak or not.

Jacob's pocket vibrates.  He has to walk away from Levy and the mountain a little ways, but a new e-mail has come in.

You have less than 24 hours before that whole area goes up.  There might be a way to slow it down once the sun rises.  Be advised Director lady and Sergei will be at the lake by 8am, approx.  (3.5 hours)

Don't take stupid...nevermind.  Try not to die, unless you are in to that sort of thing.

Also, be aware, the Lake Guardian is coming. He/she/it preserves, watches over, guards the magical nodes/major lakes, of Scotland.  apparently all this disruption caught its attention.  Be polite.  Seriously.

Re: An hour to sunrise.

I fill Israel in on what Ben just told me.

Thorn, I need you to help with the evacuation and keep an eye out for the Mayor and a tall, severe woman.  They're mostly responsible for this mess, so they can take the heat for it.  C'mon, Levy, we've got to move.

I set off up the trail, presumably with Levy watching my back.

Moments to sunrise

In reply to Jacob Williams (msg # 129):

(you both passed endurance checks. Be advised they are going to get progressively harder without proper rest)

You hurry, pushing yourselves to reach the cave before it is too late.  At last, the first clouds in the east beginning to streak with oranges and pinks as the sun is making its way around the horizon, you reach the cave. The path ends at a large flat area, in the back is the cave, and standing stalwartly in front of it, are 2 satyrs, large satyrs, with sharp pointy sticks, and the Mayor.

Do I really have to say it?  I know you are fond of movie quotes Mr. Levy, so I will if I must.

Re: Moments to sunrise

Mr. Mayor, you are under arrest for child abduction, child endangerment, child slavery, and extortion.  Frankly, I'd have a hell of a lot less paperwork to deal with if I killed you where you stand and I'd be lyin' if I said I haven't thought about it since you first opened your mouth.  Bring the children out and come quietly, don't make this complicated.

Re: Moments to sunrise

"Ooh, Ooh, let me guess! 'YOU SHALL NOT PASS!' Is that the one? Well, I'm sorry to break it to you, but that line is restricted for wizards or at least the hero of the story, while you have managed to get your self cast as the villain. Feel free to twirl a mustache, stroke a goatee or monologue, those are all still open to you.  Though, I think we're kind of low on time here, so it would be much more efficient for everyone if you would just comply with my partner here."

"You make deals, you're a man of business, I sure you can understand a need for efficiency," Israel adds with a touch of snark.
