Posting Guidelines

When posting in in-character threads, players should adhere to the following guidelines:

1. Please narrate in past-tense 3rd-person perspective. I would like your posts to flow smoothly from one to the next as if written as part of a single, contiguous novel.

2. Please try to keep your posts both substantive and reasonably concise. Approximately 1-3 short paragraphs worth of text should probably do for an average posting turn. The general aim is to include enough meaningful content to make your post worthwhile without writing such a long-winded piece that it's a strain on readers' attention-spans or that it detracts from the interactive flow of the drama.

3. Please spell-check/grammar-check and edit your writing prior to posting it. It helps everyone to get immersed in the story when posts are well-written and free of glaring errors.

4. When your character speaks, select a font color (and stick with that color) for their dialogue to make it stand out from your narrative. This helps readers' eyes to distinguish between narrative and dialogue more easily and reduces the risk of players accidentally confusing the two.

5. When you need to state or ask something out of character that pertains directly to your post, include it after your post in a private line to me, like so:

[Private to Gamemaster: (OOC: Taking 2 actions this turn - firing at the thug on the left and dodging behind the righthand wall. How far am I from those crates?)}

6. This should be common sense, but just in case it isn't, never write in or assume the actions or dialogue of another character - write only for your own character's actions.

7. If it's uncertain whether your character should know something or whether a certain fact is common knowledge (including things you as a player know from having read the Fading Suns sourcebooks, but of which your character might not be aware), the best policy is to assume their ignorance until you can get confirmation from me. When in doubt, simply ask in the OOC thread (or privately if it's something that should be kept secret from other players).

8. As each of you take turns posting, please try to balance a steady flow of action with giving each of the other players enough time to post their characters' reactions. If you post too rapidly without giving the other players involved enough time to insert their posts, things get messy when their actions conflict with or invalidate yours (forcing you to go back and edit your posts for continuity or quote other players' posts and insert your own reactions retroactively - which drags down the game's momentum and makes the sequence of events confusing).

9. If you don't intend your character to do or say much of anything when it's your turn to post, either write some basic one-liner like, "Marcus merely watched the others silently, seemingly deep in thought." or make it known in the OOC thread that you're passing on your turn so that other players don't wait on your post.

10. If you get too busy with real life concerns or won't be able to maintain a steady posting rate for a while for any reason (with a "steady posting rate" being defined as at least one post per day), simply let us know in the OOC thread or send me a private message so that I can NPC your character as needed until you're able to devote more attention to the game.
