Re: Chapter 1 - The Eventide of Aven
"OK, I know your palms are getting itchy with thoughts of silver and gold" She spoke in a low voice, barely audible "But in Aven, things don't work in such an unorganised way. I see you are quite new to Aven, and I don't like pestering people on their first day, but Eventide, the guild, just won't let you solo. Even the thieves should follow an order around here. Of course, you have the choice to decline, but we have the quantity over quality, which probably won't let you live long in a way you like." She was kind, yet Zeb felt the willpower behind her words. She was a woman of her words, in her own kind. "So if you are in, throw an act like you would like to accompany me through these dangerous streets" she giggled "and I would see if you're a person of 'Eventide Level'" She silently stared at Zeb, waiting for his answer

Re: Chapter 1 - The Eventide of Aven
Zeb remained silent for a while after hearing it. Then he grunted, sighed and offered his arm to the lady, grinning.
"No miss, I must insist, these streets are just too dangerous for a woman by herself. Permit me to guide you home." His voice was deep and only mildly rough. "An interresting lass this is, and not bad to look at either.", Zeb tought by himself.

"The name's Zeb by the way.", he remarks as they start walking.

Re: Chapter 1 - The Eventide of Aven
"A decent start, indeed" she playfully noted. "You seem like you have some talent there, Zeb. I think you'll fit into Eventide." Zeb admired woman's talent. It is indeed looked like Zeb was guiding the lady through busy streets, but it was actually the otherwise. A slight nudge here, a barely noticeable poke there, the lady guided the way. "My name is Rose, by the way. I can't give you much details until someone of appropriate status approve your official entry to the Eventide." She brought Zeb to a isolated, neglected garden at the western end of the city. She nonchalantly pulled one of the horns of a stone gargoyle there, which revealed a hidden underground passage. Rose quickly pulled Zeb inside as the gate closed behind them. Without a break, Rose pulled him with herself, walking around corridors. Their path was somewhat obvious, because it was quite apparent that only few paths in this underground maze are being frequently used. While he managed to spot a few traps on their way, he failed to understand how and when Rose managed to disarm them. After a few turns, Zeb found himself in a large cavern, or inn, or both.

There were some people sitting on chairs, talking to each other. A middle-aged woman idly stood behind the counter. The cavern was illuminated with torch lights. Rose turned to Zeb "Welcome to Eventide Inn, Zeb"

Re: Chapter 1 - The Eventide of Aven
Zeb grunts his thanks with a grin. He preferred solo work. He didn't like people looking over his shoulders, controlling him. Still, he supposed there could be merits to working together like this. Better organizations, complicated heists, you name it...

"So, miss Rose, where should I apply for membership, and what should I be prepared for?"
Zeb hated initiations or tests, but it was sure to come around. They always did stuff like that. He would do the same if he ever would get so looney as to trust a thief to run an organization with him.

Re: Chapter 1 - The Eventide of Aven
Zeb rolled 11 using 2d6+2. Brawling check.
Zeb rolled 8 using 2d6+2. Intimidate.

"This!" a voice shouted, throwing a plate. It was unexpected, yet Zeb caught it before hitting him. Throwing a menacing look at the source, his gaze met with a graceful man with sapphire eyes dressed in a dark, fitting tunic. "Woah, woah, I needed to test your reflexes man, don't throw me that scary look" He backed of a step "I can see you can easily survive the dangers of the street. I'm Blue Lotus, but people often call me Blue. Now you passed second test, there is only one left behind."

"Which will be me" spoke a sturdy looking, long haired man. "I'm Verdigris, and I'll be testing your combat prowess. Ready yourself!" He stood in a battle stance, waiting for Zeb.

Zeb noticed there is a rack of basic weapons located just behind him, so he probably has the time pull of something from there. There are also chairs located nearby, and a large table, near a trio of water filled barrels.

Re: Chapter 1 - The Eventide of Aven
Zeb cracked his fingers as he walked up to the weapons rack. He did not like fighting and choose to avoid it if possible, but in this case it was needed. He looked at his opponent to see if he was carrying anything lethal to fight with. Like a knife or sword or something. He rolled up his sleeves slowly but steadily as he observed his opponent. He looked pretty sure of himself. Zeb liked to intimidate people out of a fight, but this was probably not going to work here. Well, at least he could try to make his opponent nervous so that he would make mistakes.

Once he was done rolling up his sleeves, he choose a wooden baton or club from the rack and made some practice swings with it, getting a feel for it. "I am not used to fighting for fun," he says as a matter of fact, while looking at the baton, "but I will try not to hurt you too bad. OK?"
Hopefully this unnerved his opponent, because when you're nervous you tend to mess up. Of course, he was nervous as well.

He started circling his opponent until ...

08:50, Today: Zeb rolled 7 using 2d6+2. Brawling.
08:50, Today: Zeb rolled 11 using 2d6+2. intimidate.

Re: Chapter 1 - The Eventide of Aven
Storyteller rolled 7 using 2d6+2. Verdigris: Playing the Tough Guy.
Storyteller rolled 9 using 2d6+2. Verdigris: Close-combat check.

Though he didn't want to show, Verdigris was certainly startled by Zeb's comment. Losing his temper, he grabbed an ordinary club from the table nearby and tried to attack Zeb. Zeb was expecting this, yet Verdigris was forceful, and managed to hit him.

It's now Zeb's turn.

OOC: I've used the brawling roll you provided, and taken that you were waiting for attack. You rolled 7 and Verdigris rolled 9 so you've suffered 2 damage ranks. This damage will be represented by two temporary [-2] tokens. You can distribute these tokens between your skills as you like, but I advise non-combative skills, because they won't heal until after the combat. You cannot drop your special move.

Re: Chapter 1 - The Eventide of Aven
Okay, lets take them from burglary then, I've got enough of that.

22:49, Today: Zeb rolled 7 using 2d6+2. Counter attack! (7 again? Man!)

"This Verdi-something's fast!", Zeb thought. But then again, fighting wasn't his strongest suit. The club hit him in the ear, painful and distracting, but also right nice to grab the arm of his opponent and shoulder-throw him on or through a table. So that's what he tried.

Re: Chapter 1 - The Eventide of Aven
Storyteller rolled 10 using 2d6+2. Verdigris: Close combat check (defence). Sorry :(

Bells ringing in Zeb's mind, he only managed throwing Verdigris away from him. In turn Verdigris swung his club, trying to hit Zeb again.

Storyteller rolled 7 using 2d6+2. Verdigris: Close combat check (Attack)
OOC: Roll a brawling skill check for defence.

Re: Chapter 1 - The Eventide of Aven
So that's three damage ranks? That takes my burglary to 1 (6-2-3) (unless it doesn't give damage ranks on successful defense rolls)

23:25, Today: Zeb rolled 10 using 2d6+2. Defending the heck out of himself!
23:25, Today: Zeb rolled 7 using 2d6+2. Counterattack again.

Zeb quickly ducked the swing and tried to follow up with a blow to the back of the man's knee in an attempt to unbalance him so he could floor him. He doubted this would work though, as this dude was like greased lightning!

Re: Chapter 1 - The Eventide of Aven
OOC: No, successful defence does not cause any damage, unless there is a tie. Though two damage ranks cause two individual [-2] tokens, with them put on your burglar skill, it is now dropped from Master [+6] to Good [+2]. For each point of damage, a [-2] token is created.

Storyteller rolled 12 using 2d6+2. Verdigris: Defend roll. (I never thought Verdigris would be this strong with a mere Good Close-Combat skill)

"No, I will not" Verdigris answered, trying to catch Zeb from he's leg and throw him on table.

Storyteller rolled 7 using 2d6+2. Verdigris: Attack roll. (Is this dice roller trolling me? Or today is a "Roll seven for attack rolls" day?)

Re: Chapter 1 - The Eventide of Aven
00:01, Today: Zeb rolled 7 using 2d6+2. defense. I guess this means I'm floored and beaten, don't got nothing left that is more than a +2 token.

Zeb went down, but not without kicking his opponent in his family jewels while flying.

Re: Chapter 1 - The Eventide of Aven
Zeb rolled 5 using 2d6+2. attack. +2 upshift bonus, which nets you a 7, again.
Storyteller rolled 9 using 2d6. Verdigris: Defence.

Though he managed to block Zeb's kick, it was visible that Verdigris was losing his concentration. It was probably an unusual sight, judging from surprised looks on faces of Rose and Blue Lotus. Breathing heavily, Verdigris picked up a chair, throwing it at Zeb.

Storyteller rolled 6 using 2d6. Verdigris: Attack.

Re: Chapter 1 - The Eventide of Aven
23:28, Today: Zeb rolled 13 using 2d6+2. defence.

A cornered rat will strike, that is a know thing. And just like that Zeb just caught the chair that was flying at him and in one spin threw it back towards his opponents midsection, trying to blow him over. Zeb can be seen to get red from anger. Or from exertion, but his face is quite contorted. Of course, he always looks scary.

23:28, Today: Zeb rolled 9 using 2d6+2. attack.

Storyteller rolled 9 using 2d6. Verdigris: Defence.

Verdigris barely stopped chair from hitting him, but his face was red with heat. "Alright... alright... a fighter knows... when to stop. You win" He tried to speak as he breathed heavily. Blue Lotus slowly began to speak "Wow, it's been a long time..." but Rose interrupted him "Yes, yes, but he passed the tests so we should take him to Lady of the Eventide, for his approval."

Rose turned to Zeb "You may need some rest for a moment, that was a decent fight, and when you are ready, we will take you to the Lady" she smiled "Don't worry, we have no more tests left"

Re: Chapter 1 - The Eventide of Aven
Zeb was still huffing and puffing, but he straightened his back, adjusted his breathing, somewhat calmed his mood and readjusted his collar and sleeve cuffs.

"Let's just get this over with.", he said as he was ready to go to the lady of eventide at once.

Re: Chapter 1 - The Eventide of Aven
OOC: Regardless of damage recovering system, you would be able to recover all your damage.

"Let's go" Rose began to walk. The trio and Zeb went through a corridor behind the cave, which was opening into a smaller cavern. This next cavern looked more natural, water dripping from walls, sun shined behind tiny holes on the ceiling, faintly illuminating inside. On a wooden throne, a cloaked figurine was sitting. Zeb was unable to see its face, but judging from its fragile looking hands, it was probably a woman.

"Welcome to Eventide, stranger." A young soft female voice began to speak "I'm the Lady of the Eventide, will approve your entry to our guild. Before my judgement, is there anything to be said?" She rather spoke in a reluctant tone.

"I, charming rose of this guild, Rose, hereby announce that I give my boon in behalf of this stranger, Zeb, for his social skills are adequate." spoke Rose, throwing a red rose in front of Lady of Eventide

"I, graceful lotus of this guild, Blue Lotus, hereby announce that I give my boon in behalf of this stranger, Zeb, for his mental skills are qualified." spoke Blue Lotus, throwing a blue lotus in front of Lady of Eventide

"I, perseverant nature of this guild, Verdigris, hereby announce that I give my boon in behalf of this stranger, Zeb, for his physical skills are competent." spoke Verdigris, throwing a green chestnut leaf in front of Lady of Eventide

"It's been some time since I've seen a candidate with three boons. Very promising. I, Lady of Eventide, will bless you with seal of Eventide. Come closer, and lend me your hand, Zeb" She lifted one of her hands in air, expecting Zeb to put his own hand on it.

Re: Chapter 1 - The Eventide of Aven
When their hands touched, Zeb felt a surge of energy inside himself, and everything blacked-out. He heard voices murmuring, but everything was too fuzzy to remember. When he woke up, he was lying on a bed inside a mossy cavern. Rose was standing at the door. "Sorry, I forgot to warn you about the impact. This is the touch of Eventide. It will provide you a knowledge of our secret signs and traps, and other mumbo-jumbo. You know, we needed to get ahead of magi. Lady Eventide says you already have magic in your blood, so you might be able to pull some tricks yourself, I guess."

"Well, you are now part of Eventide. We have simple rules. You must keep this order and place a secret. And you must keep away from other member's targets. You will understand when you see the place, or person. We all have special means to mark our targets, and you can mark your target as well, if the target is clear of course." Rose spoke as she began to walk away. "If anything else, you can always find me or Blue Lotus at this inn. We would answer your questions."

Re: Chapter 1 - The Eventide of Aven
Zeb scratched his head. It was all a bit much to take on. He expected some sort of petty gang, not this magicky secret society stuff.

"How do you mean marks? Are they visual signs or is it more ..." he pauses, "supernatural?"

He got up on his feet and leaned agains the wall. "And more importantly, is there a tithe to give to the organisation on our hauls or do we get it all?"

Re: Chapter 1 - The Eventide of Aven
"You get it all, as long as you play by the rules. Lady Eventide covers the expenses of this place. In return, she wants us to run some errands for her from time to time, mostly stealing specific items from specific places. And for some reason, she doesn't want any solo thieves around Aven. But we don't ask many questions here."

"The signs and marks are mundane, but you now have a supernatural vision which detects these marks, and transliterates them for you. This is a personal gift designed by Lady Eventide herself, because leaving magical marks would be detectable by magi of the Academy, while a mundane teaching will cause security issues during a treason. Lady Eventide instantly removes her blessing from traitors, which renders them incapable of deciphering marks."

"So I'm supposed to come up with some kind of personalised mark. Right. When should I decide on that?", he asked her as he stood up. "I'm about to go and have a drink. Wanna come?", his rough voice said. He also had his stuff still at the inn. He wondered what the deal was now. Would he sleep here or at the inn? Perhaps he could ask Rose if they went for a drink.

Re: Chapter 1 - The Eventide of Aven
"Sure, why not?" Rose replied. "By the way, you can stay here if you want, for free, and eat what our secret inn offers. Cheaper than outside. Or you can stay at wherever you want. It's up to you." As they reached to the tunnels leading outside, she spoke again "These tunnels are full of traps. And they all trigger with same action: Waiting. If you stop and begin to examine things in these tunnels, I'd say first thing you'd learn would be how much pain you are able to feel." she giggled.

They went to the inn Zeb was staying, and picked up a table to sit and have a drink.
