Dann of Clan Valin:
Right, well, this whole scene would probably easier to deal with with a picture or two. I can appreciate the fact that it is not easy to do. But the issue is probably more on my side than on the GM's -- I will try to pay more attention next time, and ask questions if I have doubts.

Let's assume Dann stays hidden for now. Do I need to change my last post?

I can fix.

Ok pics.

One the way up, but there are rough steps carved in the path and less tourists.

The cave entrance The stairs end just below the boulders on the left hand side of the picture, there are two youths midpicture, a few more boulders scattered around and a looming figure inside the entrance.

Just to clarify...

We are now all waiting for Dann's posts right? He is definitely the tip of the spearhead now.

@GM: Can I assume Drake hooks up with the team outside the cave without any further encounter, and dive right into fixing the plan?

Re: OOC Thread 2.

@GM: Did Drake, Jon and Griff finish exploring the lower cave? I mean did they see any other tunnel or chamber deeper inside than where they found the girl?

Also, according to Aphail, which are the sacred caves? The lower one? Or the upper one guarded by that black armored outsider?

I was under the impression that you guys had searched the whole lower cave, and that the sacred cave was the upper one currently guarded by the outsider.

Re: OOC Thread 2.

Hahahahaha...my sincere apologies GM, everyone! I really wildly misread all the posts!

If I had understood the higher caves to be the sacred caves, I wouldn't have asked just Dann, Aphail and Jakk to go up. :P I had thought upstairs is just a rest area for the Borderers. *SIGH*

Okok...I will edit my posts. And I have Drake flow with Usopi's idea.

Re: OOC Thread 2.

Let's continue the tactical discussion here...

Usopi's idea to create a diversion to draw the outsiders' attention, together with Chlainn's suggestion for a smoky fire. If started at the lower levels, coupled with the 2 Borderer sentries raising a fire alarm and NOT an intruder alarm, this might do the trick. The outsiders might send down some Borderers together with 1 or more of themselves to investigate. We can handle this.

We can then perhaps use the subdued outsiders' attire as disguise to walk in the front and begin our assault.

Usopi Venia:
Usopi points up to the small figures above them on the pathway, ”I beleive he would be up one of the fellows up there scouting the sacred cave that the large bear was killed to obtain. If the bear’s cave is similar to what you described of this one, I am uncertain stealth will be an option. A single long hallway used as a dwelling for twenty or so borderers and the gathered cult leaders would be a hard thing indeed to sneak through.  Perhaps the best plan would be a similar one to our approach so far. Those of us with skill in stealth attempt to infiltrate, and when they are prepared to act, those of us more comfortable with the obvious approach can draw the borderers and cultists out of the cave. This could possibly create a pincer of the known force attacking from without supplemented by the unknown force seemingly attacking from their where they thought they were safe.”

OOC - saving time by assuming we’ll know what Dann knows once we get up top, I’m not sure how you’ll be able to sneak in if the mouth of the bear cave is guarded by multiple borderers and one of the cult knights. One way might be for Chlainn, Dann, Lann, and I to climb up on to the shelf and draw the guards’ attention. This might provide at least a small window of opportunity for our stealthy members to sneak in the front? (Though would almost certainly swiftly draw out most of the cult leaders to the cave mouth, so it’d be risky.

Drake Taubron:
Drake is thoughtful after Usopi and Chlainn offer their suggestions.

"If the upper cave is like this one here - single entrance, and guarded, then it would be virtually impossible to sneak past the sentries and enter undetected. Chlainn's plan - start a smoky fire - if done here at the lower level to draw down the outsiders, we might be able to deal with them one by one."

He turns to Chlainn. "Did you not encounter some Borderer sentries as you made your way up? Perhaps they could raise a fire alarm, making the deception more believable..."

Excellent! Good man Lann!

GM:
Drake recalls that the cave he had just explored had been stripped fairly bare of most combustible items it would take some work to bring fuel up from the forest and stock it here to start a fire....but it was doable.

Hey GM, in your descriptions of the cave Drake and company explored, there were old furs, discarded clothing, etc. Could these be conceivably used to start and keep a rather dirty smoky fire going:
- right outside the cave entrance so that the interior of the cave isn't smoked out (rather that girl inside doesn't suffocate to death!)
- where it isn't directly visible to anyone looking down from the upper caves
- such that the smoke floats up and becomes easily visible to anyone at the upper caves?

GM:
Griff led the way into the lower cave followed by Jon and Drake,

...

They pass old furs and cooking frames, stone ovens and firepits, discarded clothing and hide and dolls twisted out of rawhide and carved from wood.
...

Bones lie here, still hanging with black strips of meat and rancid fat they are piled here all about. Griff notes them off as his eyes range over them; deer, rabbit, ptarmigan, capercaillie, badger, squirrel, lynx, wolf....man...

Beyond them piles of badly cleaned furs sat, the smelled even worse than the overpowering stench of rot and spoiled gore....

Re: OOC Thread 2.

Sure. Not a good fire....and certainly not a pleasant smelling one but if you want lots of really bad smelling smoke that'll do it....just watch out for the fleas, ticks and lice...

it won't be a hot fire so the smoke will rise quite gradually but they'll definetely be able to smell it.

Re: OOC Thread 2.

How narrow is the pathway from the sacred cave to the lower cave? It might be interesting to see if there’s some point where one of us might be able to hide, so that as any inspection team comes to check out the fire we can shove one of the big bads off the path (and down the mountain?). I imagine taking out one of the big bads by dropping him off a mountain would convince the borderers with him to surrender swiftly. (Alterbativley if they just send borderers then I can be waiting at the fire to convince them to surrender.

No big deal, if we get the tribals to go, thats one less casualty.  If we distract the borderers, that'll weaken them.  I'm sure they'll go investigate eventually...  Wouldn't want to attract attention.

Gathering that fuel for the fire will take time.  WOnder if there might be a lot of lamp oil, bear far or other stuff.  SUrely they might've stocked some firewood?
