Re: Rosmuillean

Drake Taubron:
Turning to Brannon, he squats down on the floor and picks up a small stone. "There was another skeleton clad in bronze armor and slumped in a corner. This one carried a two metre long battle standard. The man had a broken his hip bone, likely from falling. These are the symbols and markings on the battle standard and its armor..." Drake begins to draw out the symbols on the floor.

Fascinated by the prospect of more historical artefacts, Brannon forgets their immediate predicament, and hurriedly grabs paper and charcoal from his pack to begin jotting down the symbols Drake reports.

"A battle standard... it is a shame you could not bring it down." Brannon muses. "I daresay it is delicate. Not easily dropped. And likely another climb up would mean more confrontation with those bats..."

He glances back up, pragmatism and ambition clearly warring within him...

"Look guys, I understand your interest for history, but there are probably many other places to explore to discover the things of the past. And we have only one life. I don't see what we have to gain continuing to battle forces which are clearly stronger than us!" says Dann. The story of Drake made him slightly mor impatient to leave the place.

Kores Varias:
"Seems fine, but I'm not sure if these wounds will keep on bleeding.  Leeches and bats need to keep feeding."

Drake nods at the Scholar. A flicker of gratitude appears in his gaze, but it disappears almost immediately. The man is eccentric that's for sure. But he is certainly powerful in his Art. Thank the Heavens he is with us.

Kores Varias:
"Can't you see?  They dead speak to us.  Every time there is danger, someone from the past dies and remains for who knows how long.  Man must succeed, and the dead are there to guide us.  We see how they died and that prepares us to survive where others have fallen."

Drake frowns at Kores. The Scholar's words disturb him greatly.

"It would be good that you not speak this way. If I had not known you before to be eccentric, I would have concluded that these caves have begun to affect your sanity and that your mind is starting to come unhinged."

"As I said awhile ago, there were probably some amongst the legionnaires who became insane as they tarried here in these deadly caves..."

He takes a glance at Colm who seems deep in thought and in a world of his own. Turning to the muscular Borderer whose cautious judgement he had come to rely upon, he says, "Where would be a good place to camp down for a few hours? While the HeathFather comes to a decision whether we continue in these caves or leave..."

"A good first step would be to leave these caves first. Then everyone will be able to decide if they want to come back here or not." suggests Dann. "Leaving might prove to be a challenge though." he adds, thoughtful.

Drake nods thoughtfully at the Borderer's recommendation. Retrieving a small piece of cloth from inside his tunic, he begins to wipe his sword clean. He looks up at his other Companions.

Colm frowned, " At the least we should probably make camp and have something to eat....I would like to go a little further if possible....though we have enough gold and other items for a beginning nest egg without loss of a single member of our company.....barring Kores arm."

" Strange as it may sound I think it may be safer bivouacing here or at the base of the stairs than outside.  Reavers and lawless men are too afraid to enter the cave and apart from the bats nothing seems to be alive in here...and the dead haven't bothered us overly much so far."

" But as I said, we have a tidy nest egg already."

In reply to Colm Cernach (msg # 541):

"You crave gold and riches but you fear the unknown.  I would rather discover what has been lost.  There were once men who built these structures, and tried to withhold its secret from future generations.  Do we have enough to fund a private army?  Just by tasting these undiscovered caves I crave to explore further and to reveal what I believe would be greater wealth and (smirks)riches, and the great knowledge of what has came to pass."

"Alas, perhaps some other party with greater ambitions and love of knowledge will be more worthy that us...  of the secrets beyond."

" An ancient prison created by those who walk in shadow....but not just a prison."

He turned toward Brannon, " What have we found? An altar....a storeroom....the dead body in the frozen passage. Was it Selentine? If so perhaps that was originally the way up...a continuation of the stairs as this corridor is."

He glanced at the cleft in the rocks, " Where does this lead?"

That cleft is how we got to this bat cave.  I figure we can easily deal with Bats.  If this rope is still here ve advance in force and take that position....

Re: Rosmuillean

Arguments fly back and forth as the Companions debate the way forward. Drake listens calmly to each person's argument and thoughts until silence lapses again over the Company.

As he considers the options, he turns to look at the Party, his eyes lingering a tad longer on the injured Jon, the childlike Lute, and the individuals who have been silent all this time.

Frowning, Drake grates in a soft resigned voice. "Our objectives are to seek out wealth to enrich each of us, while also adding to the HeathFather's warchest..."

"This place has an ill-favored feel about it. And our encounters here have also been inauspicious thus far, though except for Kores' arm, we have suffered no great loss. And we have found ourselves a small fortune in gold coins and other artifacts."

Sighing he continues. "Let's bed down here for a few hours. After we are rested, let's have two groups. Jon, Colm, Kores, Brannon, Dann goes up to explore the crevasse and see where it leads to. Lute and I will stay here with the heavy equipment and items you do not need for now. The time limit will be for a single day. After that, we shall get out of this godforsaken place together..."

"Agreed?"

In a rare moment of attentiveness, Lute whimpers at Kores' mention of the "company of the dead". Drake glares fiercely at the child-like giant until his whimpers and blubbering fade away. Pointedly ignoring the Scholar, he glances at the rest of the Company, looking directly into their eyes, waiting for their responses.

Drake nods. Finding a good spot on the stone stairs some distance from the fissure where he can easily keep a close watch on all approaches to the Company, the mercenary sits down to rest. His blade in his lap, he continues cleaning and polishing the weapon with a clean rag and a bit of fur.

"I'll stand watch." He whispers before turning back to working on his blade and lapsing into silence.

OOC - If any of you wants to do anything, please go ahead. I'll have Drake wake everyone up in my next post and lead the Company back out these caverns.

What are our plans beyond that point?

Get back to civilization to fence off our loot, then find out info about the situation with respect to Colm's problem?

"Aye." Brannon agrees, with one last whistful look in the direction of the lost battle standard. "There is little value in knowledge if we don't return to share it." He glances at Colm, then quickly adds: "Or riches, of course."

He settles down to rest near Drake's chosen spot. "Are we then to Rosmuillean, or back to Glissom?"

Kores's eyes are wide open, he clutches his staff unsteadily.  He has no religion nor beliefs, but surely there was great purpose, hidden truths and much to be discovered.  If this party want to spend time guarding caravans and hunting bandits he might just find himself another party or return to Ongus.  He will not speak of his plans but starts to think about taking a caravan out.

Colm nodded thoughtfully, " Aye, there are things we found here that Brannon may needs research at the temple...and as you say, money can be better used closer to where the merchants lair."

" We must pass by Mimirs Well and through Rosmuillean on the way back anyway...unless we want to strike off overland and risk crossing the Shadowspin elsewhere."

" When we arrive back in the city, lips are to be sealed as to where we have been and what we have found and especially regarding MY business."

In reply to Dann of Clan Valin (msg # 557):

After they had all rested and eaten the companions made their way back down the long stone stairs, collected items left there and then descended through the crevasse back down to the cave entrance.

Kores was greeted by his faithful donkey who seemed none the worse for wear.

After redistribution of weight the party struck off back down the Forest Road and past the village of Mimirs Well, the elder waved to them as they passed seemingly relieved that they had emerged unharmed from beneath the mountain.

The trek through the woods at night was uneventful, whether because of the still lingering favour of the Fair Folk or simply because the wildlife was not hungry who could say.

Lute was prevented from wandering off to inspect lakes or towers and around midnight they found themselves at the ford over the Shadowspin.

Entering Rosmuillean they were greeted with cheers by Reavers and then slightly confused expressions when they drew closer and the make up of the companions group became more evident.

Colm greeted the old woman he had purchased herbs from and the others grabbed a quick drink at the inn.
