Glissom City: The Return

The companions arrived back in the city the next morning exhausted, the trip from Rosmuillean being uneventful but tiring.

OOC:

Feel free to detail what you want to do over the next day or two.

In reply to GM (msg # 1):

Kores does seem confused.  He furrows his brow, deep in thought, seems to be raving silently to himself.  You see him open his mouth and speak inaudibly to himself and he seems to avoid eye contact with everyone.  He is quite agitated.  Sometimes he flies into an inaudible cursing fit and his knuckles crack around his staff.  He glares at nobody in particularly, scowls and grinds his teeth.

Glissom City: The Return

OOC - Thanks for the bridging post GM!

Drake quietly surveys the dirty streets crowded with people from all walks of life - grocers and street peddlers hawking their wares, farmers leading their animals or wheeling their produce about looking for buyers, housewives out marketing, proud looking city guards strutting about in the livery of the current lord of Glissom, travellers and mercenaries with ugly ill-favored faces, and the perpetual swarm of street urchins constantly running here and there, no doubt swiping purses and rings off careless, naive, and stupid foreigners - swindlers, liars, cheats, fools, and not a few murderers, the very best and worst of humanity, all out for a merry day in their miserable lives.

He watches in silence as a woman, a fisherwife out on a merry marketing trip by all appearances, walks past a filthy beggar covered in tattered clothing crouching in a dirty corner of the street. Drake's sharp eyes missed nothing, not the feigned innocence of the woman, nor the sham pitiful look on the beggar's face, neither the leather pouch surreptitiously passed from the woman to the beggar, whom upon receiving the item, waited for the woman to walk down several metres more before slithering up to disappear into a narrow backalley.

Back to this dangerous place again. Drake sighs before turning his attention elsewhere.

OOC - So...are we offloading the loot for cash? Or do the scholars and historians want to keep them for further study? If the former, I imagine GM will allow that Drake Hadrik has some black market contacts that may be helpful.

And we should get a place to stay for the couple days we are here.

And GM, what is coming up in terms of the adventure?

Also, do we finally get xp?

Glissom City: The Return

Dann does not hide his joy of going back to the open air, and back near the sea at that. He take advantage of the party returning to town to visit his favorite inns, drink a lot, and hang around the harbor when sober to gather some news of what's happening at sea with reivers and borderers these days.

Dann takes Lann with him to introduce him to other sea based Reavers and to make sure that the mountain lads face is associated with his own....so there are no...misunderstandings...

He checks in with the others over the next few days though he has a little trouble tracking down Hadrik he soon finds that looking for Lute and waiting near the big fellow soon brings Jon or Hadrik calling.

He drinks and tells tales, most of them true but called tall by those with whom he shares them...he tells of great battles in ancient cities and of horrors in a mountains heart and he and his companions are hailed as mighty warriors.

His ears are open and he hears tell that King Conn is calling for warriors to join in a great raid against the farmlands of Glissom when the harvest time is next here.  There is little news of his own Islander Queen and he surmises that they are probably raiding south into northern Ereworn at this time of year.

OOC: The party is at +1 Renown among the Reavers when with Dann or Lann for the next three months due to Dann and Lanns talespinning....though they are careful to honour their vows to both Colm and the Good Folk and change enough names and locations to not soil their honour.

Both Dann and Lann manage to burn through 30 florins each.

Re: Glissom City: The Return

It's been several days of restful peace, in which various members of the Fellowship had gone off to look in on their personal lives, to tend to private matters, or to catchup with fellow countrymen, swap tall tales, and get merrily drunk. Drake however, while enjoying the warm beds and hot food, was increasingly feeling the unease of being in one place for entirely too long a time.

And so he began seeking out each of his Companions, looking for them in homes, in the marketplace, in the libraries and academies, on the floor of barrooms, in exquisite high-class hangouts for the wealthy, in the seedy sordid filth of the slums, the brothels, and the dark alleys where no city guard would dare to tread at any time of the day.

To each person whom he found, he left word of a gathering. On a particular afternoon. In the basement of an unremarkable building long abandoned by its owners. Situated in a quiet sleepy area in the middle of nowhere. Far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The purpose of the gathering, would be to decide on the split of the loot, as well as the way forward for the Fellowship. In no uncertain terms, he made it clear to each that while the attendance was strictly by personal choice, the direction for the discussion, on all topics raised, would proceed ahead without waiting for any who chose not to turn up.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Drake pauses as he passes under the shadow of a nearby building and looks up into the sky. The time draws near for the gathering. His grim eyes survey the empty street before him, noting with satisfaction the total absence of any other person. This is the same as he has observed while surveying the area over the last two days. This part of the city had nothing to offer, not even the tiniest bit that would attract beggars, the homeless, or the occasional street urchin.
Heaving the heavy sack on his back to a more comfortable position, he turns his steps towards a nondescript wall...or was it a door... Taking a final look around and seeing not a soul nearby, Drake pushes on the wooden surface. The panel yielded easily to the pressure to reveal a dark interior shrouded in shadows. Drake disappears inside and the panel closes quietly behind him.
Once inside, he sets his burden down on a round table of sturdy oak and lights the lantern. He pours himself a mug of ale, then sits himself into one of the several heavy oaken chairs surrounding the table, and proceeds to wait for the rest to show up...
Outside, the streets return once more to their quiet and dreary emptiness...
Kores had waved away Drakes invitation, he was quite flush with coin after having sold off his share of the takings and some of the eldritch scrolls that he had found in the ancient catacombs.
He received a princely sum from the librarians at the Temple of Brigantia for the scrolls and Ciaran the Goldsmith was acting as bank for the remainder of his gold.
He purchased a small shop in Castleside that had once been a jewellers and set about decking out the rear of the place with desks, parchment, ink and as many old scrolls as he could pick up for his studies.
And there he stayed, he was in quite a bit of pain still from his burn scars though the staff kept others from seeing it and the loss of his arm slowed him more than he liked.
Most of the time the slat at the front of the store read Closed, but sometimes....just sometimes....it would say Open...and that is when he made a little extra coin...to further his studies.
Re: Glissom City: The Return
Colm bought the upper storey of a new building near North Gate and banked the majority of his takings with Ciaran ( with a small discretion fee) and set about investing the rest in a small but effective group of listeners and watchers throughout the city.
He did not go outdoors without some form of disguise, even if just a hooded cloak....but he gathered information on Kilnded and had barkeeps and prostitutes bring him tales of gold or fortune brought in by Borderers, Sheriffsmen and the like.
He kept tabs on his companions, as they all still carried his emblem on them....but his mind was occupied with logistics and plans and he had little time for other pursuits.
Re: Glissom City: The Return
Brannon clearly has mixed feelings about being back in Glissom. He left the city to get away from Temple politics, and now he finds himself headed straight back into it. With a secret that he must not let slip, to boot. In the other hand, the comforts of the city are welcome after his travails in the wild, and at least here there is no fear that every step may be your last...
He returns to the Temple, and sets about documenting his discovery of the Lost Legion. His only reference to the rest of the party in his document is to having "hired sellswords" to help him. Partly to avoid difficult questions... though, if he is honest, largely to ensure that he gets the credit.
He copies out his sketches, and brings what artefacts the others will spare as proof that he has found an ancient stronghold of Those Who Walk in Shadow. Now that there is no immediate danger, he rues leaving that banner.
Brannon unrolled the items, now rewashed and carefully cleaned, that he and Colm had taken from the dead Selentines and presented them to his peers.
He is careful to catch up on Temple gossip, but otherwise maintains his aloof disinterest in anything contemporary. When the word comes, Brannon makes his excuses and slips quietly away to the meeting.
He did not have to wait long. A soft rap sounds on the panel door and Drake looks up in anticipation. Lowering his mug, he gets up and moves silently to the door. Opening it a crack, he peers outward cautiously and sees Brannon waiting patiently outside. Eyes narrowed against the glare of the afternoon sun, he takes a moment to survey the street. Seeing that it is still as empty as before, he opens the door wider, nods at his friend, and waves him inside.
"You're on time Brannon." Picking up a clean mug, Drake pours a generous draught of ale and sets it down before his friend. Sitting back down, he looks casually at the Librarian. "Dann should be on his way. And perhaps...just perhaps...Lann may decide to show up too. That's about it." Drake shrugs.
His gaze turns the slightest shade more intense. "What news from the Temple?"
Brannons findings in regards to both the Lost Legion and the ancient stronghold made quite the impression and he found himself taken aside for numerous chats by older jurists, bards and druids at the temple.
OOC: Brannon now enjoys a higher status at the Temple of Brigantia and among the Druids, Bards and Jurists who dwell and work there. Brannon and anyone with him dealing with Temple Officials is at +1 Renown Level.
"Good of you to join us." Drake gives his friend a friendly nod. He gets up to pour the borderer a mug of ale, waving for him to be seated.
In-between swigs of ale, the three men update each other on news each has heard. From the scholars and practitioners of elemental powers in the Temple of Brigantia, to the raiding plans of King Conn and the riever kingdoms in the north, and the comings and goings of the black market and the underworld in Glissom and the nearby environs.
Dann of Clan Valin:
Drake glances thoughtfully at the Borderer. "Are you? Indeed what are your thoughts?"
EDIT: Added a hook for GM to advance our story. Through Lann maybe? :)
Drake smiles and leans back after a moment's silence. "It appears we men are suited to places and deeds more dangerous and more rewarding." He reaches over to pat a heavy-looking sack on the table, eliciting a vague sound which is a cross between the jingle of coins and the clatter of something metallic. "When Lann arrives, we have booty to split. And perhaps he will bring news of a more interesting variety..."
Lanns enquiries into the heritage of the dark sickle shaped blade are answered by a rather cranky old bard at the temple. He turns it over a few times, narrows his eyes and consults some scrolls, then disappears for almost half an hour.
When he returns he looks quite cross, " Now you just take this away with you and go back to your cattle raiding and sheep-buggering or whatever you borderer lads get up to these days.  We'll not have that here. Its not dangerous mind, so don't fret but it was made by those who walk a dark path and for what fell purpose I cannot say...but its a good blade...materially speaking....just not for here. Take it away."
When Lann hesitates he turns back, " It is a blade carried by those that follow Gulro..", his eyes flick about and he says a short blessing from the Hearthmother. "...even you lads know they aren....uh, weren't...good folk."
OOC: If I understand, It counts as a magical blade for enemies that require a magical blade to injure but it doesn't confer any intrinsic bonuses. So not +1 or +2.  It counts as a sword.
Finding out the sword's worth, Lann returns to the inn to join the companions.
OOC - it's not an Inn Toirneach. But an abandoned building in a deserted part of the city. :) Hope this helps towards our rp.
The panel door closes quietly behind him as Toirneach walks in and joins his companions at the table.
"We were waiting for you Toirneach." Drake gives a friendly nod to the newcomer, gesturing him towards an empty chair. He stands up and pours a mug full of ale, which he sets down in front of his friend.
Without further ado, Drake picks up the heavy-looking sack and empties its contents on to the table. Glittering coins of gold and silver fall out into a pile. Some roll about the table in lazy circles until they are gathered up and swept into the pile.
Eyes glittering in the reflected light of the lantern nearby, Drake looks up at his friends with a flourish.
"3600 florins. The grand outcome of our foray into the caves of darkness and icy death..."
He smiles and says nothing for awhile, allowing a moment for his friends to gape and marvel alittle at the fortune on the table. As soon as he sees anyone begin reaching out to touch the coins, he continues.
"...divided into 6 shares - Dann, Toirneach, Brannon, Kores, Colm...and Lute, Jon, myself will together take one share."
Carefully watching each man for disagreement, Drake quickly moves on to the value of each share, and the associated why's and how's of it all. In very short order, the treasure is divided and each person picks up his share of it. They further agree that Brannon will deliver Colm's share, and Toirneach Kores' share, with a message from the Fellowship wishing each man well in his pursuits.
OOC - Details of the share can be found in msg #705 of the OOC thread. I've already had Drake begin spending his share and preparing for the upcoming adventure.
Ok I'm done here. Don't need to rush GM, but we are ready when you are. :)
Entering and heading through he finds Kores hunched over a table with 6 lamps arranged about him and a wickedly sharp knife clenched in his fist.
Re: Glissom City: The Return
GM:
He mounted the stairs and knocked on the door, and was told gruffly to enter.
Colm chuckled at the offered monies and stowed them in a bound iron chest beside him, to Brannons eyes the chest already contained a great deal of silver.
" My friend, I may have need of you...and the others I suppose...my ancestral lands have been gifted to Clan Hewell but many of the folks that dwell there are still loyal to Clan Cernach."
" I would have you deliver this missive to one Blaine Lyssen, who dwells in the Dell of Lalliwick on my families old lands in the mountains north of the Erewon border."
" Its wild land, but there are herds and villages and trails to find your way."
" Are you willing? Shall we say 100 florins to be shared amongst them, it shouldn't be much of a dangerous journey."
Brannon takes the missive, and tucks it into his pack, making a point of not reading it. "Aye, I'm willing. For the others... who can say? I'll ask them. The money is little enough... but perhaps that is as good a test as any of loyalty. Good luck, Hearth Father. I will return when the message is delivered, along with any answer, or not at all."
He takes his leave, and makes his way back to the others, to explain their charge and Colm's offer. "I, for one, will go. I've heard tell of Selentine ruins out in the Pagans. I will make the excuse of an expedition to follow up on recent finds. The rest of you may join or not, as you see fit: the money is slight, but we are about a greater business here... let us refresh our supplies tomorrow, and depart at dawn the day after, to make the best of the light..."
Beyond that, his packs are as ever ready for travel. He makes his devotions at the Temple and prays for Brigantia's blessing on their journey, then makes his way to make the meet others...
Re: Glissom City: The Return
Time passes quickly and very soon the appointed morning arrives. Jon, Lute and Drake arrive early at the agreed gathering point, which is a small alleyway a stone's throw away from the East Gate. Even though it is early morning, farmers from the surrounding farmlands are already arriving outside the gate pushing their carts, leading their mules, and bringing produce of every kind waiting to enter the city to sell.
The trio is careful to stay out of sight. Their wait is short however, as the rest of the Fellowship arrive very soon after - Dann, Brannon, Toirneach, each carrying his own equipment, provisions, and weapons. The friends meet, and exchange nods of greeting. When the night curfew is finally lifted and the city gates open, the Companions join the growing stream of people exiting the city, stepping out the gate and embarking on their journey to the Dell of Lalliwick...
Without turning around, Drake nods at Toirneach's suggestion. "We will be following the King's highways for a while. Just keep together, keep our eyes open, look out for each other, and we'll be fine. When we are off the main roads and further south near the border, then let's do just that...marching order."
"Tis a dangerous lawless land, Ereworn is. Where vicious bandits range the countryside uninhibited. And where fey creatures come and go as they please...and we'll be right cross the border from them."
He half-turns and gives his friend a pained smile. Next he turns to glance at Brannon. "This errand isn't secret after all..right? What's in the missive anyway?"
A strange greeting to be sure. Is this a red-light district of some kind?
Eyebrows raised, Drake nods at the bargeman, bids him good day, and follows the rest of the Party through the tiny town. The few buildings marking the boundary of the town very soon disappear completely, giving way to flat expanses of farmland beneath the shadow of the mighty Pagan Mountains.
Drake notably relaxes as he leaves the town behind. The seasoned mercenary keeps up his watchfulness, but the slight, almost imperceptible tension that had gripped his demeanor disappears.
'Bren' does as he's asked with a resigned expression, the only weapon Drake finds is a short cudgel which Jon takes.
There appear to be about six or seven men inside, Erewornian from the accents....most of the conversation seems to be complaining about the new rulers of Ereworn and talk of where to go next.
Re: Glissom City: The Return
GM:
Jon churred like a nightjar to get their attention, indicating that others would soon emerge from the broch.  He cocked a head at Drake, and drew a line across his throat with his left hand before holding it up palm upwards.
Drake catches sight of Jon's gesticulations. He signals back with a single upraised hand with palm facing Jon, indicating to hold.
"Gentlemen, our time is up. Let's go meet these men..." Already in motion even as he speaks, Drake moves quickly back to Jon's position.
He whispers to Jon and the companions who have followed him. "Follow behind. Make no threatening gestures." Clapping a firm hand on "Bren's" shoulder, Drake directs the man to the entrance of the broch.
Stepping out into the open with "Bren", in full sight of the men gathered in the stone tower, Drake breaks out a greeting. "Greetings fellow travellers! It seems Fate has seen fit to bring us together to seek shelter in this place!"
Giving Bren a clap on the shoulder, pushing him forward, indicating that he is free to go, he continues on with the introductions.
"I am Hadrik. These are my associates. We are just passing through this region. Mind if we share this shelter with you for the night?"
Drake nods apologetically at Bren. He offers to return the man's weapons he had removed earlier. "Sorry about that mate. Had to be sure we aren't among enemies here..."
Drake smiles. "Overheard what sounds like trouble from your conversation. We are on our way to near the border. Wouldn't want to drop in on a fight we are not invited to..."
Bren glowered at Drake, though possibly mostly out of embarrassment at being so easily caught.
The other men within the broch stood as the companions revealed themselves, showing them to total eight in number.
An older man raised an eyebrow at Bren then answered 'Hadrik', " Aye, yer welcome to share this pile of rocks if you've got food and drink to share as well....we didnae get much chance to take a lot with us when we left home.  And we haven't had a lot of luck resupplying on the way here."
The mens eyes roamed over the group taking in Dann and Lann, and Drake and Jon....they seemed to quickly disregard Brannon.
The man nodded to his fellows and they began to retake their seats on the fallen masonry about the fire.
" So what brings a bunch of Glissfolk out here? And an odd bunch at that.."
Drake comes further into the broch and takes his seat at the fire beside one of the strangers. He replies to the man's question. "We are looking for work. The sort that calls for men who keep their cool and can handle themselves under pressure. As long as the job doesn't involve beating down the weak and defenceless, or stealing from the poor, and the money isn't too bad..."
As everyone takes his seat around the fire, Drake beckons for Lute to come forward. From the big man's pack, he retrieves some bread and cheese that he offers to everyone including the eight strangers. There's nothing to drink but water, which Drake freely shares with the strangers, passing around his own waterskin.
Drake observes the strangers as they eat, noting their accent and attire, armor and weapons, piecing together all this information in his mind.
A grave expression on his face, he turns to the older man who had spoken. "We wouldn't pry into your private business, Stranger. But it seems you had some trouble back home. Would you share what news you have, so that poor travellers like us wouldn't step into steaming piles of horsecrap we don't have shoes for..."
In his mind, Brannon weighs up the odds of these being potential recruits to Colm's cause. These men might be a useful resource - or a liability. Who or what do they worship? It depends also on whether this new king would back Kilnded or Colm if it came to it. No sense alienating a potential ally. But what if this king were a potential enemy?
"We need not cross the border." He replies to "Hadrik", softly. "But we will need to go close. It depends how far this trouble extends beyond Ereworn and into Gliss lands. We should learn more of this new King. Who knows what would happen should we stray into his territory?" To the men, he asks: "Who is this new King, that he so takes against his subjects and their places of worship? Has he pursued you across the border, or settled at driving you from your home?"
Drake takes another look around at the strangers. These are common folk, fishermen and sailors as they said. They are trying to flee the trouble, not stand and fight back. Certainly will be of no help to the Heath Father in his quest.
His gaze falls on the older man who spoke for the group. This old-timer probably had a difficult and harrowing flight over the last few days, even weeks. The guy looks almost done in. He has probably given up as much information as he knows about the situation. There is probably no more value pressing them or even engaging them trying to elicit more details.
He turns to his companions in a low voice. "Let's discuss our plans tomorrow morning. When these are not around."
He finishes up his share of the bread and cheese, then looks up and addresses the older stranger. "We should post a watch. And like two honest neighbors, I am proposing to watch in twos - one man from your side together with one from ours. Two hour shifts. What say you?"
The morning was normal enough, what with the shelter provided by the stone tower, the warmth afforded by the fire within, and the filling if bland dinner the previous night. However Drake wakes up to an annoyance that is slowly and subtly bringing up the nagging thought that something's not quite right.
"Alright. Gather your things friends. We are moving out on a search." He gathers his own belongings quickly, then turns to Dann with a grim face. "Can you find their tracks?"
Though his folk were more used to looking for signs at sea Dann knew enough from his youth hunting puffins and foxes to find a trail and soon enough he did....though there was only one set of obvious footfalls...which he assumed to be Hulls....Jon left very little trace of his passing.
The other Erewornians roused themselves and looked around suspiciously for a short time before they noted the Gliss contingents concerns for their own companion were real.
Dann followed the trail through the fallen masonry and found a patch of briars on the forests edge through which a rough trail had been cut very recently...
Dann crept forward through the snatching briars, with Drake at his shoulder and the others behind. Eventually he came to a clearing among the thorny bushes where he found both Hull and Jon sitting on a squared stone staring into space with a little drool coming from the sides of their slackjawed mouths.
Their weapons lay on the ground beside them.....
Drake immediately looks to the surroundings, checking that there are no enemies. He carefully observes the scene while keeping his distance from the two men...
OOC - Drake observes the situation. Some questions for GM:
1. Signs of a fight recently?
2. Signs that Jon and Hull just arrived a moment ago? Or does it look like they have been in this state for some time?
3. Are the two men facing in the same direction? If yes, which direction?
4. The weapons look like they were placed there or dropped?
He turns slightly to whisper to Brannon. "See anything...witchcrafty? On those two? And also that stone they are on?"
Brannon notes the stone is covered in very faded but ancient markings in spiral and coiling patterns...and there are old dead flowers which are not in evidence growing nearby laying at the base of the stone....an old altar to Brigantia...or one of the other gods....hard to be sure with two arses planted on top of it.
At the Brannon's assessment that this might be an altar to some being other than the Hanged God, Drake turns to look at his friend uneasily. Grabbing Jon by the arm, he, not ungently, half-lifts-half-drags the man off the flat stone he was sitting on.
"What do you see?" He asks Brannon, indicating that the Librarian should go on ahead to study the stone more closely. Turning back to Jon and Hull, he looks at the two men pointedly, awaiting their answers to his question as to what happened to them.
Drake looks critically at the two recently bewitched men. "You don't remember anything...Ok. Then...what's the last thing you remember from last night?" He indicates that the two men should speak up, and that he is still listening.
Turning to the older Erewornian who spoke for his group last night, he addresses the man. "What is this place? Do you know? And are you familiar with the motifs on this altar?"
Switching his gaze back to the stone, he examines it further now that it is free from arses. Reaching out with his hand, he gingerly and lightly brushes its side. Finding it to feel exactly like how a stone block would feel, he lays his palm on it and begins to push on it, checking to see if it can be shifted perhaps...
Brannon inspects the stone altar carefully. "Yes, it's Fomorian, all right." He runs his fingers over the engravings. "Though not, thankfully, a friend of Balor. These symbols are of Eithne. High Druid Huill described her centuries ago - people sought her favour before hunting or sailing, among other things." He picks up more of the dead flowers, and crumbles them between his fingers. "It looks like people still do, though Eithne herself must be long gone." He looks up at the others. "I would say it is just superstitious locals trying their luck, except we have just witness an enchantment first hand. Belike there is something here posing as Eithne in return for worship..."
With a curt nod to the two men as a sort of apology, he glances around at the party and sighs heavily. "This is a riddle I have no answer to. If we cannot find anything in this place that might hint at the motivation for the bewitching, I must assume that whatever motive the lass or lad had, has already been fulfilled. And this could be information about us, our intentions, and our destination..."
Drake's lips are tight as he considers the situation for a moment. "If there is nothing more anyone wishes to add, I suggest we get on with our respective journeys."
He turns to the older Erewornian and nods his farewells. "Thank you for the shelter. Be safe. And may you find whatever peace there is that still exists in these lands."
Just before he turns away, he looks up at the older man, a shrewd glint in his eyes. "Whereabouts is Gullet Hollow, good Sir? Is it near where we are?"
There should be a cattle trail somewhere nearby for when the kings share of coos are brought down to market....perhaps higher ground would help...
Brannon stepped beneath the trees of the ancient forest, though there were signs of human hands in the form of scattered stumps and strippings from logs there was still something primeval about these woods.
The companions began to climb through the rough undegrowth and stony outcrops towards the upper part of the slopes beneath stands of pine, birch, rowan, aspen, juniper and gnarled oak.
Capercaillie rattled somewhere off in the distance and curious crossbills watched them from the branches.
Dann found signs of both roe and red deer and many smaller animals, after sometime the group came across a broad eroded path bearing the marks of many hooves....but the cattle had not been driven down this path for quite sometime.  Seeing little other option the companions followed the stock trail up through the forest.
Suddenly Drake called a halt, his keen ears had picked up sounds ahead beyond a jutting boulder before there was a levelling out of the trail.
Before Drake in the clearing is a great bear, larger by half again than any he has seen before....its brown and grey pelt is slick with blood on its right hand side and a broken off spear projects from its right shoulder, another from its right flank....the bear is huffing heavily and rocking back and forth.
Drake backs away quietly. While the bear looks like it has hunters on its tail, and that it is having a bad time of the fight for its life, Drake is all too aware of the propensity of wild animals to attack ferociously at the slightest provocation when in such straits. He can do nothing about his scent, but he can behave in a unprovocative manner...
3. They seem very determined and more than one of them is injured, mostly cuts and bruises but some bear claw marks and are not looking too healthy.
As to anything beyond a group of folk doing very badly at hunting a massive bear...nothing appears 'odd'.
Dann and Lann do not recognise the plaid but note the hunters are all quite young, possibly too young to be recognised by their clans as yet.  It is possible they are still on their Wilding.
The plaid clad youngsters edge closer to the clearings edge and as one break and run forward throwing their spears at the wounded bear.
Four of them find purchase, others either fail to penetrate the thick fur and hide or miss entirely.
The bear roars in pain and rounds on its attackers, it charges scattering a few, one does not make it out of the way and is broken under the creatures great weight.  The bear does not slow and charges into the forest mowing down young pines as it does so.
Most of the hunters give chase, though a few stop to see if they can aid their fallen.
Drake, Lann and Brannon move forward firing at the bear, and see two of their shafts sink into the creatures hide the others hit one of the many trees or disappear into the undergrowth.
Jon and Lute run forward, Jon looks at the dagger in his hand and then at the bear and decides to lean back against a tree and watch, Lute begins weeping heavily.....
Dann moves up with his blade ready, he notes that the hunters seem to have little experience and are faring very badly indeed....he is impressed by the size of the bear...much larger than the brown bears he has seen on the shores of his home territory...and the fur is much darker in colour...
The hunters continue their chase throwing and retrieving their spears, with few striking their target.
After another 50m or so the bear comes up against a fallen oak and is forced to slow while it considers going around or over, two of the hunters fail to recognise the bear has stopped and run in too close.....two slaps of its paws and they are broken upon the crowberries.
The bear looks up and sees the hunters surrounding it, it huffs quietly and a resigned look comes into its eyes as it roars its defiance at them shaking the trees around it.
Drake slows his pursuit, coming to a halt a safe distance from the bear and its band of young hunters. He casts a curious glance at Lute's weeping, but turns back quickly to the injured and trapped bear.
Glancing curiously at the hunters, Drake notes their attire that is typical of Borderers in the region. Their youth and obvious inexperience do not escape him. It must be some kind of training. Or perhaps a test of adulthood. Shouldering his bow, he hangs back, turning aside to his Borderer companion Dann. "Do you know what's going on here? Some kind of test of manhood? The youngsters look like they need some help though...would it insult them if we do intervene?"
"They are not trained hunters. It might be some kind of test, yes, but this bear is not normal, I am sure of it. If this is a test, the people who set it were not being friendly." answers Dann. Without another word, he tries to approach the wounded warriors if they can be reached without getting too close from the bear.
Re: Glissom City: The Return
Drake looks at the young Borderers. He spies one young man, youthful in appearance, yet larger and better built than the rest, who seems to be the leader of the small band. He calls out to him. "A cornered beast fights the hardest. And I have no doubt yonder beast will take several more of you with it before it succumbs."
He turns and surveys the other young Borderers. "Most of you are wounded. A few badly. And there are some who will never walk again, or live to see tomorrow."
"So unless you have a good reason for killing this great bear right this moment, I suggest you leave it be and allow it to escape. Track it down and perhaps take it by surprise in its weakened state and kill it by stealth later."
"Tend to the wounded among yourselves first."
" Aye....I seen that....I seen that."
, the wiry one said with a smirk.
Boyd rounded on Drake and the others with a fierce grimace, " Get away wit ye!  Yer nae wanted here!"
He turned back towards the penned bear which was swaying side to side on its massive paws and champing its great jaws, " Get in there and kill it! We've nae long nou."
Face impassive, Drake steps back from the cornered bear and the young Borderer hunting party, keeping his hands down and relaxed, and far away from his weapons. Slowly making his way to the edge of the clearing, he motions for the rest of the Company to step back as well. He looks to Boyd with a "it's all yours" look, indicating the bear and the entire situation.
The Mercenary settles down to watch the scene play out.
