Usopi coughs to clear his throat as she asks him directly to explain himself. He straightens up his shoulders to give himself some measure of confidence in his reply.

"I honor Gatanades with purity of body and spirit. Relations," another cough, "without some deeper bond can lead to impurities of thought, or fixation on vice."

here he pauses for a moment and breaks in to a big, sheepish grin, rubbing the back of his neck, "Not that I am not flattered, or even uninterested, but virtue must be first and foremost in my mind if I am to show the grace of the savior through my example."

She frowned deeply as if considering his words then smiled, " Aye, tis a gaes of sorts laid upon yerself. Like the old lowlanders who came from the west across the mountains. Remember the old tales o' dragon-ships? They came with their one eyed god, and the men who followed him had cut themselves below to open themselves to his power. Their kind still live there, in Thuland, but our lot drove them from the highlands...well, had done...I don't know how things sit there now."

" But yer Gate-and-Hades, he dannae ask that of ye? I'll be a weeping if'n ye say aye."

She mused again with her hand on her chin, " Deeper bond ye say? So if'n we haed a handfasting there'd be nought stand in the way o' you tilling the soil?"

Usopi is wracked with a fit of awkward and embarrassed coughing and choking at the mention of cutting. He barely manages a "No, no cutting." between his fits.

When he's settled his embarrassment down to barely stable throat clearings he also ekes out, "I am not sure what a handfasting is," he looks to his more traveled companions for advice/help, "but as I imagine you refer to a commitment ceremony of some kind," another throat clearing, "then yes, something along those lines is what I refer to."

Rigan raised an eyebrow and queried, " So thats a proposal then?"

OOC:

All the local Gliss know what handfasting is, up to the others whether they've heard of it or not.

Usopi goes quiet, considering his words carefully as his friends remain silent. He clears his throat again, though this time in preparation rather then embarrassment, “I would not presume to put claim to you, Lady Rigan. As your clan’s leader I assume your coupling to be of import, and I will be leaving these lands for an unknown period come my party’s time to travel again. What kind of bond would I be to a leader if I am gone from the home of my betrothed?”

Usopi’s nervous fingers click against the cuisse of his armor, unsure of what the lady’s response might be, and unsure of what he would do if she pursued the topic further.

" Your words are as handsome as your face."
, Rigan said with a serious face.

" Well.....if that is to be the case,  then I will need to drink quite a bit this evening."

She turned to one of the younger folk near the door.

" Bring drink and food and song...."

Platters of food were set on hastily assembled trestles and casks were opened and drinking cups handed about.

One of the older people, a wizened old woman, leant forward, " So....we have agreed with Rigan that we of the outer holdings will support her decision to back Clann Cernach.  Are we the first to join your cause?"

Re: The Southern Pagans

With a small, quite sigh of relief as the food is brought out, Usopi takes a seat. He feels the need to have a bit of drink considering his recent ordeals, and when the food and drink is brought out he pours some uisge-beatha in to his mug and gathers a platter of food. He leaves it to the others to answer the older woman, and instead takes the time to reflect on the last few days, from the groups arrival here at Lamell lands, to their entrance in to the barrow, to his brief time in the dark void of what he assumes was death, to now. He also begins to contemplate the future and as he does so he smiles widely, enjoying the warmth of the alcohol and the flavor of the food.

Aphail is not a good speaker, but he is a good listener, having listened to his companions talking on the road about their journeys.  He has been listening to Hearth Warden Brannon in particular.  Equipped with this information, Aphail will inform the older woman of the tale.  *Posting for Brannon by Proxy*  Aphail is also of Clan Cernach, so is aware of the background details, and Brannon has filled in the gaps.

"Clan Cernach had their lands and titles taken away a few winters back, on the word of the Kings Steward Kilnded.  These lands were were gifted to Clan Hewell.  Clan Cernach has now re-asserted it's ownership of these lands.  We are to journey to Clan Hewell to resolve any difficulties.  Our leader, the Hearth Father, the rightful Lairn of Cernach, has recruited most the people here, save a few who have not met the Hearth Father.  The Hearth Father is traveling abroad, recruited individuals and families of import for the cause.  There will come a time when we much all stand and be counted, or bow down like ripe barley.

No one will have to break their oath with the king, for the issue is not with the lawful king.  Our fight is with the unlawful usurper who steals clan land and murders clansmen, who perverts nature and despoils for pleasure."

*Don't think/feel I'm META gaming here.  Aphail has had access to all this information.*

Re: The Southern Pagans

Aphails words brought a great deal of nimation to the old ones and they began talking amongst themselves, but one truly ancient man shuffled forward.

" Hmmm, a stand against the steward...but is not the steward the voice of the king? While the king sits in seclusion the steward carries his words to the people.  If, as you say, the Steward is acting against the Kings orders then when he emerges from the tower he will have the traitor cut down, surely?"

"We'll support Cernach, thats a certainty....but there may be a future time when folks will need more than just words to lay down their lives. But your master has us now, and thats as strong an oath as he'll get from the mountain folk...and stronger yet than any oaths he draws from those farther flung. Honour is a wonderful wife but time and distance can lead a heart astray no matter."

As they eat and drink Griff is given a small clay bowl inlaid with specks of quartz and jasper.

He looks up to see the old man he spoke with last time, " Was me sons son who done wrong at tolmen, thankye for set it right so he can move on."

....................

Lann is again approached by the bearded man and the thinner woman he spoke with last time he was here, " Would the heroes be wanting to celebrate with us this eve?"

The man pressed a silver and garnet ring into his hand his fingers lingering on Lanns own...

...................

Usopi finds that Rigan leaves him be for the evening....though with their Head-Woman away from him many, many others approach him and begin animated conversations with him with a great deal of touching of his arms and arms about his back and neck...later he notes someone has hung about his neck a small silver likeness of a hound on a leather thong.

....................

Chlainn soon finds himself in a drinking game with two large thickset middle-aged men. As Chlainn wins the third round they pass to him a necklace of silver on which are hung a number of old Selentine coins.

....................

Aphail and Brannon are drawn into conversation with the Elders and talk late into the night. They are both given silver knotwork brooches for fastening plaid.

....................

Dann finds favour with two sisters and they eat, drink and 'talk' until the early hours. He finds a fine steel dagger with a hawks head handle laid on his plaid when he wakes alone.

..................

Gat and some of the hall hounds manage to snag a leg of goat off the trestle and drag it into the corner to devour with some good natured rough-housing.  In the morning Usopi notes someone has fixed a thick leather collar about Gats neck inlaid with a knotwork pattern.

Usopi, though originally a tad morose as he thought back upon the past few days, quickly brightens as the clans folk gather round him. He is friendly and engaging, smiling broadly, shaking hands, though he is as oblivious to any come ones as usual.

When he finds the small silver hound around his neck in the morning, he makes his way to his friend Aphail and shows him the hound and the small figurine of a woman holding the spear and fireball from their last stay in Lamell lands.

”Tell me friend, do these symbols have any meanings I should be aware of if I am to keep them? I do not wish to spurn gifts, but I would also not wear them openly if they are signs of commitment to deities other than the Savior.” Usopi asks, holding them out to the man.

Aphail will accept the brooch with gratitude and grace, using it to fasten his cloak.

"Definitely Sir.  The woman with the Spear and a Fireball in Brigantia, Goddess of the Hearth Fire.  You can ask Brannon more about her.  Brigantia has a large following in Gliss.  The Silver Hound?  A symbol of the hunt for sure.  Maybe you have been marked as prey!"  grinns Aphail.

Though most of the armour and weapons have been left behind with Clann Cernach there is enough there...including Usopis sword that the elders nod and agree that it is troubling indeed and that man-beasts were thought to be little but legends of the woodsmen.

The cantankerous old man leans forward again, " This is terrible indeed..but do we know that these beasts and their actions are linked to this supposed treachery by the steward? Could it not be simple coincidence...even here the rumours of upheaval in Ereworn reach us...did they come from there?"
