Wish we had blood sword battle perspectives.  I liked the 2D boxes...  Got a vague idea of what the battle looks like.  Maybe we can just retreat to a wider place.

No chandeliers to swing on?  If only we had a sapper!  We could create a false surface for them to walk on...  or install chandeliers to swing on....

Re: OOC Thread 3.

Drake Taubron:
Usopi Venia:
whelp, I definitely missed my target (though Chlainn got a critical hit on him, so hopefully he’s dead unless his hp total is crazy.)

I’m pretty sure I’m clear of taking another hit though, so I’ll trade out with somebody in the next round and rest up a bit from my wounds.

I'll be glad for Drake to trade places with Usopi to the frontline. Though I will defer in favor of Dann.

However I think this is a good place to try a shove. Get one or both enemies off the cliff. So how it looks like is this: once Usopi backs away, 2 of us basically dive at one of the enemy, one going for his torso, the other for his legs. The object is to grapple the guy and shove him off the cliff. Either imbalance him with one quick hard shove so that he topples over the edge (roll a natural 1 on 1d20?), or slowly push him inch by inch to the edge and then some.

I will leave the mechanics to GM. But it may look like this:
The 2 of us who dives, each makes a grapple attack by rolling attack normally. On success => successful grapple. So the enemy can be single grappled or double grappled. And then the shove begins, basically a Strength check pitting our combined Strength vs the enemy's Strength.

Its an idea but be aware that was a very lucky roll from Drake, they are larger and stronger than your largest and strongest member and quite capable of pitching one of you off as well....they just like cutting you open more...aesthetically speaking.

Totally note that GM. But perhaps, just perhaps, 2 of us working together against 1 of them might grant some advantages that tip the balance in our favor...:P:D

And Drake is also waiting on Aphail's smelly smoky burning furs to throw on the helmets of those outsiders! :D

On a separate but related note, I realize we need some distance attacking and/or grappling options. Halberds and spears, perhaps staffs, flails (whether the morning star or spiked chain variety) and whips, and even weighted nets. And certainly bows and crossbows. This is for fighting overpoweringly tough opponents where straight melee doesn't work.

In reply to Drake Taubron (msg # 27):

Ah, Kores would be able to come up with all sorts of alternatives.  Not as great as a sapper.  We had all the time in the world to build siege engines and other anti armour hardware..  Would you believe it my 1st rank sapper was belittled in the hiabour forums??!!?  They just operate on a different time scale from most adventurers...  Says they wouldn't accomplish much in King Under the Forest...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trojan_Horse

There has been speculation that the Trojan Horse may have been a battering ram or other sort of siege engine resembling, to some extent, a horse, and that the description of the use of this device was then transformed into a myth by later oral historians who were not present at the battle and were unaware of that meaning of the name.

Methinks this was a mechanical wooden tank but the original plan failed and their man powered motility failed to work and they locked themselves in....

Griff might be a good choice as well. He's got the might spell on, but I'm not sure how long it lasts.

Also, I know a crit doesn't do double damage, but my hit and Brannon's arrow did 9 hp of damage to the same guy last round. Your hit then of 5 damage would then total 14 hp. I've got 14 at full health, so I'm curious how much farther these guys can go then me. (I may be feeling emasculated by them. :P )

Also, I know a crit doesn't do double damage, but my hit and Brannon's arrow did 9 hp of damage to the same guy last round. Your hit then of 6 damage (If I'm reading the rolls right and the 1d6 is for damage) would then total 15 hp. I've got 14 at full health, so I'm curious how much farther these guys can go then me. (I may be feeling emasculated by them. :P )

No Usopi. The 1d6 is for Armor Bypass, which is not needed since it is a critical hit. Damage for a mace (is that what you are using Chlainn?) is a straight 4 points, plus any Strength bonus Chlainn has.

If I didn't guess wrong, Griff is a Mystic. Even though enhanced with Might spell, he still presents a very soft and vulnerable target. Dann would have been preferred to step into the hole. But then again guys, are we trying the grapple and shove thingy? Or you wanna continue with the slash and bash melee?

Re: OOC Thread 3.

Ah, I see how I missread it.

I’m fine if you guys want to try the grapple and shove. I’m not obviously cause I’ll be stepping back to open the space, so no immediate risk to me. :D

I feel like if we had something particularly advantageous to the push. Is there a mechanic in place if the objective of an attack is to trip the target not hurt them? I imagine trying to roll a prone dude over the side of a cliff without him man handling you over the edge yourself.

Worse case scenario you all die, I beat and expoditious retreat (because you can’t kill the taint of evil if you’re dead) I go find the wildings whose leader girl has a crush on me, and I inspire them to come back and enact a more carefully laid out, ewok style ambush. ;)

In reply to Usopi Venia (msg # 31):

Lann is a warlock.  What armour has he got on?

Toirneach Lann
A son of a wise woman of Clan Gar. Toirneach Lann started his training as a youth under an elderly spear-witch who taught him to combine sword and sorcery to overcome foes.

Tall and lean, Toirneach Lann is pretty quick on his feet and is usually dressed in his suit of maille which was a gift from his mentor and friend, the spear-witch Magia. His pock marked face which was a result of a childhood illness causes people to shun him.

Dann's description doesn't indicate.  I thought he was a barbarian?  Chlainn is in mail too.

yeah, all I got is a d6,4 mace.  Thought it would make a change from swerdes...

Not sure, if I push, I might end up throwing myself over.  Reflexes are very low for the armoured squad as it is.  We need a sapper!

That is a good plan Usopi!  We're all expendable and can reroll new characters!  Hell, I might even come back as a flying head!

Ok so I am guessing we are NOT doing the shoving thingy. If that's correct, then yeah, Griff, better to let Dann go upfront have his ass kicked 1st...:P :D He is indeed much better equipped.

Yowza.... maybe we should just retreat fully down to the first cave? I don’t like the idea, but I assumed we were starting this fight at full strength and didn’t consider some of us might already be wounded. :(

I will have Drake do a check on his comrades next time. So that such information is surfaced in a timely manner, and not in such inconvenient circumstance. :D

As for retreat, I am unsure. Perhaps we try holding them here for a few more minutes?

Ok so I will just do some shameless metagaming...:( Sorry GM. I really am actually...sigh...

Lann...you are at least Rank 3 right? You have a ton of spells that can help!!! Serious! :D Can you look at what you can cast? Silent Warrior? Imperil? Illusion? Havok? These 4 allow you to help the fight immensely without stepping into melee. And if you actually do replace Dann, Fortune and Enhancement would greatly improve your effectiveness! And after the fight is won and the enemies neutralized, Lann can break out some healing.

Do you have the Players' Handbook Lann?

Usopi - badly injured. plate armor.
Chlainn - badly injured. plate armor.
Dann - injured. chainmail.
Drake - fresh. leather armor.
Lann - fresh. chainmail.
Brannon - fresh. Bow.
Griff - fresh. Bow.

For the frontline, to hold the 2 enemies back:
Drake should replace Chlainn right now. And if Dann takes one hit, then Lann should replace him. Because (I am guessing) Lann and Drake have the next highest Defence score. And Lann's chainmail armor would be a good boost to his durability.

For overall strategy:
There are only 2 enemies, though they are very tough. Good chance we can overcome them and win. But straight combat is not going to cut it. Unconventional means are needed. Magic is most straight forward - looking at you Lann! :D

If not, then we wait for Aphail and the furs. Once he arrives, we fling the furs on the enemies and light them on fire. That would give some advantage to us. Gotta see if that is enough to win. If not, we will think of and try something else to widen the advantage.

Re: OOC Thread 3.

Technically I would say I’m only injured, not badly injured. I can take another turn in the fray if needs must. I assumed I was going to take damage from that last hit because I’m still not great at reading DW rolls.

Do heal spells take a long time in game to take effect or are they instantaneous? If their instantaneous Lann could just heal us as we switch out back and forth from the front.

Would it help if one of us rushed after aphail to make sure he was actually coming? The man might be cowering in fear in the lower caves.

I cannot remember, probably because of a previous fight. That must have been some time ago, maybe as far as our trip to this frozen mountain cave.
