===> Return from LA

When Victor returns to Reign Academy he find Rylis waiting for him outside of his lab. No one heard what one was saying to the other but it got heated. There was a shouting match. The stories differ but people say that Havoc threw the first punch. Jericho responded by picking up his old friend and throwing him through his old friend front door. While Havoc was the loser of the fight between the two, cheap shot Havoc took gave Dean Jericho a black eye.

Josh heads into Havoc's lab and he went straight to the chair that Havoc loved to sleep in.

OOC: Cal is still with David and Mercy, modify post when you want.

Havoc is in his chair wrapping his torso with some gauze, he was in a fight, a bad one. He has been patching up the bruises and taking a good volume of whiskey. "Joshua..."

He tosses you a a bracelet with large chunks of metal on it. "Twist the metal, and the capsule in side will release an endothermic chemical, absorb about zero point eight shotgun shells worth of joules." It has four capsules. Havoc continues holding a glass of whiskey on the rocks to his bruised tattoos. "The chemical is Hallite's concoction, I think he wanted to make some sort of cold grenade for the fire department."

"Interesting backup should I need it no doubt. Maybe one day I'll control all of this energy in a useful manner." replies Joshua, and he affixes the bracelet to his left wrist.

"You look a lot prettier today. Have you been testing a new foundation?" he jokes. Havoc definitely does not look pretty. "Can't stay for long, unless you order me to stick around. I figure you need some downtime. I met Jason and he was asking about sharing the book with La'Rhane."

He takes the book out of his back pocket. "Figured I best ask you first, just in case I'm letting anything out in the open you don't want sharing."

"Jason? Good kid." Havoc nods. "It'd be a good idea to share that with La'Rhane, I think she could learn something helpful. When she was fighting those Slayers, she looked like a fussy toddler who was upset with her toys."

He walks over and takes the papers to make a copy. "It's a valuable bit of information. The people who wrote it knew what they were doing." The print hums and shakes with the 'improvements' Havoc made to it. He returns the both to Joshua and prints out another two for himself from the memory of the machine. He quietly returns to scribbling in his notes.

"Awesome. Well, I'll leave you to it. I'll be in the gym if you need. And oh...the devices I had hold of. I stashed them in the lab yesterday. I figure you don't want me having a warp device and nullifier in my pocket for too long. God only knows it would be fun to see what happened if those things were hooked up together."

He laughed at the thought of it. Most likely it would be similar to plugging a DVD player into an engine.

"What happened to Caligula? He wasn't around when I came in."

For the past few days Havoc has been a little more erratic. He has a ticker that prints out messages from Jericho. After reading them he burns them into a ash tray along random page from a magazine and a test he was supposed to correct for one of his classes.

Re: North-West Campus, Victor Havoc's Lab
Joshua enters the lab just as the ash tray completes the burning of ticker tape messages. He smells the smoke, but says nothing of it.

"Hey Doc. I need some help, think you can spare the time to run through some test diagrams with me?" he asks, taking a sheet of paper and beginning his sketches.

He draws a ragdoll outline and then starts penciling in the ideas he had had. Simple tight pants, though worn with riding boots that were embellished with brass fittings and spurs made from clockwork parts. He wondered what sort of thrust could be generated by one of Victor's warp devices to allow some form of levitation. "Got any ideas to help provide short range flight?" he asked.

Re: North-West Campus, Victor Havoc's Lab
You find Havoc in his lab as expected. He has his now usual exhausted look about him. Cal slinks by at Joshua's presence now certain food is coming soon. Victor takes a look at the paper. "Short range flight you say?" He aches with memories of past experiments. He supposed this was a rite of passage for all engineers and mad scientists. "It's not so hard, but it really comes down to how many bones you are willing to break and how large of a crater you are allowed...I'm sorry whats this for?"

"Well heck, I'm not worried about my own bones. Other people's though, well that might get messy. Craters are likely to cause a stink with the Deans too." replies Joshua, a cheeky grin forming.

"Haven't you heard? There's a renaissance fair starting up soon. I wanted to add some steampunk to my costume for a bit of cool variety."

Re: North-West Campus, Victor Havoc's Lab
Havoc stares at him trying to break apart the code he is using to speak. He tries a few different cyphers until he realizes it just pain English. He trying a reverse crypto-shift in Russian for good measure but that doesn't make any sense. "Reconnaissance fair? What the hell is a OH! Renaissance... Why did you just say so..." He spent most of his weekend chasing psychic assassins.

He stops a moment and raises a brow. "And you chose a time when everyone is going to pretend that they are still in the dark ages to design personal flight, a technology that has not actually been properly developed yet?" He sits down and takes a breath. The problem was interesting enough not terrifyingly depressing.

"Largest problem is a power source. That usually means fuel, and fuel means weight. Most personal flight systems die right then and there. But you might have an alternate option."

"Now I have noticed that you actually have a modal power, you are either absorbing or exhausting your power, never both at the same time. If you're serious about this, more control makes this idea more feasible."

Re: North-West Campus, Victor Havoc's Lab
"Well hey doc. Let's face it. If the dark ages never happened then the whole world would have advanced probably a few centuries earlier. Imagine if Leonardo Da Vinci had been given free reign to do what he had wanted!" replies Josh, but the idea of controlling his powers better made him consider the options.

"Modal power?" he queried, and then tried to recall what he had been taught. Nothing really came to mind.

"Are you trying to say I could, well...nullify gravity or something? Or are we talking some sort of propulsion like maybe an ion drive? I'm thinking ion drives normally don't put out much thrust if their surface area is small, like my feet. But nullifying gravity, or drawing in energy whilst simultaneously expelling energy would mean that there is directional control and a relatively decent speed of ascent?"

The inner scientist is coming out, and though he still speaks normal his understanding of physics is starting to become considerably better.

"Where do we start?"

He grins. The youthful exuberance shining through.

Re: North-West Campus, Victor Havoc's Lab
Victor sits there and stops sulking for just a moment. He takes a look at Joshua who he took as an assistant perhaps six months ago. He smiles to himself thinking that he might have done something good for once. "I had a personal flying device for a while. Warp core that gave a gravity shock to everything in a five foot radius. I didn't so much fly as I did fling myself in a direction and hope for the best." He laughs at the memory of the broken bones, he thought it was worth it then, same as he does now.

"For you..." He grabs a stack of papers and a text book or two. "High density energy management by the EDEN group and personal flight dynamics by David Hallite. Let me know when you are through with it."

Re: North-West Campus, Victor Havoc's Lab
Josh groaned in mock dismay at the wad of paperwork that he would have to read through to implement the design. "Doc, you're killing me here. Only old crusties like you actually get excited by the thought of ten hours reading and research you know!"

He doesn't give the Doc time to react though, and he reaches over to grab the textbooks and other paperwork. High density energy management sounded like a fucking heck of a battery and transfer system, just like he had on his bracelet. It would be similar to a capacitor that worked with his talents. Personal flight dynamics sounded a lot like a training manual for those who could fly. It could be useful.

He took to the corner and started flicking through the papers and textbooks to help him get a feel for the information. No doubt there would be pre cursor books that he would need to find too. Havoc had a way of making his students learn the hard way, but it promoted a deeper understanding of the subject matter.

Re: North-West Campus, Victor Havoc's Lab
Old crusty started machining some parts helping create the designs on your suit. Victor thinks of walking forward and saying something but stops. He believes that things will be superior if you come up with the solution your self...

Read the articles is difficult and takes you a long time, but you do make progress. The EDEN papers describe how to manufacture a device to use a high powered battery, in fact, if it even might given you the chance to draw the power from your own genetic talents.

Breaking it down you see that Havoc's warp devices draw power from an alternate dimension in the way your potential flight device would draw power from you. The difference being that the warp devices require a few hundred other components to maintain the connection while yours would be relatively simple in comparison.

However you have to admit, that Caligula is making things significantly more difficult by deciding that your papers are the most comfortable place to sit at the current moment. He might be waiting for food...

Re: North-West Campus, Victor Havoc's Lab
Joshua had taken off to the corner, but Caligula always made a bee line for him anyway. Half way through an equation describing the quantum entanglement and fixation of paired electrons the familiar feel of claws trying their damnedest to slice through his shins was definitely not an aid to scholarly thought.

He looked up at the clock and was amazed to see that almost three hours had passed since the first entry into the lab. "Heyyy, Cal! Man, it's well past your normal feeding time. Lets see what we can find for you in the cupboards. "

He rummages about, opening the closet that normally has the food in. It was almost empty. "Time for a supplies run soon. Cal is almost out here. Want me to put together a list?" he asks.

It might be some time before the question registered with Havoc, but Josh put down the bowl of food and then cleared away his notes to somewhere out of Caligula's reach. He would be back to them later. "I'll be back later. My brain is fried. " he says, and heads out the door. He wanted to go and talk to Mercy, as she might have a lot more experience in costume design, but then Terri and Rebecca could be perfect for research. Was there anything that Rebecca couldn't find?

Rebecca it was then. He took off to find here.

---> From Student Lounge

Thinking always made things interesting for Joshua. He was considering his powers, and thought about a different application for them. Something he hadn't considered before. He wanted to discuss it with Havoc first though, to make sure he didn't break some law of physics.

He looked around and saw Havoc still working. "Have you ever considered what I might be able to do as a blacksmith?" he asked, plain and blunt.

"I haven't thought about it either, but as I was considering making a sword for the renaissance fair I realised that my unyielding nature might allow me to simply press an object into shape. Maybe even release energy into it to effectively temper and harden it too, if I work on the technique."

Re: North-West Campus, Victor Havoc's Lab
When you return to the lab you see that Havoc has a an enumerated list of things he wants. They are written with sharpie in a magazine he left on the counter on prime numbered pages. This caused some confusion the first few times he sent you out for stuff, and while Joshua may not understand why, he at least returns with most of the stuff.

Victor walks over. "You want to blacksmith now?" He laughs. "You can bend cold steel, but the strain would make the metal rather brittle..." He narrows his gaze. "Unless you... if you could manage to keep the metal hot, you might be able to do some..." He twitches his wrist and the steel blade slides out of his arm brace. He inspects it noting that it has taken endured some were and tear.

"That's what I was thinking. But anyway, wouldn't the simple act of deforming the metal cause heat? And with enough heat, I might even be able to line up the molecules. I read an article that said the strength of those legendary katana blades was purely down to the alignment of molecules due to the forging technique." replies Joshua.

Clearly he had been putting his power resisting gloves to effect and browsing the net lately.

"Want me to try something with that blade?" he asks.

Re: North-West Campus, Victor Havoc's Lab
Victor slides a latch and uses a screw driver to loosen a bolt as he talks. "Yes, I could use some help with something... How steady is your hand Joshua?" He takes a moment to stop loosening the blade to grab an old notebook burned on the edges, water damaged, and barely held together with a rusted metal spiral.

The pages crinkle as he turns the pages. You see scrawls and half solved equations dashing up and down the margins. Joshua has been there for quite a while, and he might be surprised at how much he can actually understand. The notebook seems to be dedicated to Victor's combat harness. Dozens if not hundreds of variants and attachments fill the pages. Havoc turns to one particular page. There is an image of his arm blade, slightly different from the one he has now.

"This thing has seen some mileage. I need it put back into it's old dimensions, within half a millimeter of tolerance. Can you do it?"

"Tolerance of half a mil? Shouldn't be too bad. You want me to copy the old design to the letter?" he asks, and he starts to remove the arm blade attachment using the tools provided.

"Now, do you want it machined or are we talking about using the principles we just discussed?"

It was somewhat exciting to put his powers to the test, but machining things was equally fun.

Re: North-West Campus, Victor Havoc's Lab
Havoc unscrews the last bolt and places the blade on the counter in his lab. He turns around and rummages through a small pile of metal objects and draws a second metal blade, also damaged. He shrugs. "Fix 'em both. I'll tell you if I can tell the difference."

Victor wasn't entirely comfortable with someone else checking or developing his gear for him, but Joshua had already lasted longer than 74% of his previous lab assistants. Tuesday would put him into the dreaded 92% bracket. It occurred to Victor that everyone who lasted that long had at one point or another tried to kill him or at least caused a serious lab accident...

Re: North-West Campus, Victor Havoc's Lab
There was a lot of trust going on here, and Joshua could sense that Havoc was a little tense at the prospect of an unknown element at play. There would be a lot to risk by trying his technique out from scratch on the blades of his teacher, and so he set them aside and looked around for some cold steel to practice with.

"Great. Probably best to try and practice this technique before letting me loose on those blades, but I have a sneaky feeling that those blades will tolerate this process a little better than normal materials."

The next part was difficult, as it meant that Joshua had to try something that he had never done before. He took himself away to a safer part of the lab, away from external distractions and any fancy equipment. Of course, he needed to charge up, so he plugged himself into the grid until his hair was a platinum blonde colour. It tingled, but wasn't too painful to do so.

Sitting down, making himself steady, Joshua thought that the best way to begin would be to visualize things in his mind. It might not work, but it was a start. He had found moderate success by thinking of energy chakras and energy moving through his body, but this exercise would require something more akin to the flow of energy like that practiced by tai chi practitioners. Drinking in energy, and expelling energy through his fingertips.

He needed his eyes open, and as he started visualizing the flow of energy from his body to the object he was soon frustrated to find that it wasn't quite as easy as it looked. Nothing was happening!
