Re: North-West Campus, Victor Havoc's Lab
Some lights flicker nearby Josh in the workshop. In the other room Havoc start absentmindedly tinkering with a nameless gizmo of forgotten purpose. He checks the camera feed to the workshop and laughs.

He voices comes in over the speaker he installed. "Joshua... remember many powers operate off of emotions, instinct, and thought."

"Calming yourself may incite a stop of energy rather than a flow of it. When you have emitted blasts, it has always been through flashy. Think fast, alert, but avoid panic."
The advice was something he heard a long time ago from someone he use to call an enemy, he wondered if that mutant survived the war.

Re: North-West Campus, Victor Havoc's Lab
Josh had been slowing breathing in, and the noise coming over the intercom interrupted his flow of thought. It was a distraction, and he tried to catch what had been said. How long had he been trying this? He had lost all sense of time.

Sitting back, he took one of the bars of iron and pushed his finger through the bar deliberately and carefully. With the proper technique, he had been able to punch holes through the bar with his finger, a perfectly odd shaped hole being formed that fit the cross section of his digit.

Forging things would take more work than that, and so he needed to heat up the object first.

Quick, alert. No panic. Easier said than done.

Josh thought of the times that he had achieved a blast, but his memory had a habit of tricking him from recalling such information. He considered the times he had been confronted by the sentinels instead, trying to illicit emotions that had come at that time. Again, a blank. There was something, but it wasn't easy.

"It's no good. I'm going to get Jason to see what he can stir up."

Victor watches. He knew Joshua had the power, but was puzzled as to why it was not working as intended, this was supposed to be instinctive. Just then he turns around. "Joshua, come out of the blast chamber for a moment."

Dean Reign had just walked into his lab. This has happened maybe twice in his entire stay here. Once, she came to essentially tell Havoc that she did not like him. The second time she came for a different reason, but told Havoc that she didn't like him still. He considered for a moment her presence in his lab. "Joshua... I think someone is here to speak with you."

Re: North-West Campus, Victor Havoc's Lab
The youngster turned as his last attempts to eke out his power availed to nothing. Victor might see potential, but all Josh was feeling right now was failure to launch.

"To see me? Hey, welcome to our humble lab Miss." he welcomed the Dean as he walked up to her. He had left the block of steel exactly where it was. "Is there something I've done wrong?" he asked, wondering why the head of the school had decided to spring a visit upon him. He knew it couldn't have been related to the attack that he and the others had been a part of...that had been dealt with already.

Dean Reign looks around then glances at Havoc. He takes the hint and tries to find a place for the seating. He goes over to a table and lifts up on end dumping the contents with a shattering clatter. He pulls over a chair for the three of them and sits down.

"I received a call from your father Joshua, he saw the report from Los Angeles." She takes a seat. "He was concerned about what you were involved in and whether you were... whether people were sufficiently looking out for you."

"My dad? Is he ok?" asked Joshua.

He wondered what the dean had said about the situation. "What did you tell him?" he asks. Martin had a knack for mental intrusion, but his mother was the real genius. She would have closed down lots of the links with his details in, of course, but it was always the case that there was never enough time to close down everything.

"You family is fine Joshua. I told him the truth of course." Elsa shook her head. "Your parents are worried. Are you familiar with Manifest Prediction Theory?" Havoc has had some papers lying around. The basic idea is that manifestation, or the first time you use your powers, they come out much stronger than usual. This can sometimes used as an indicator of future power level of a genetic talent.

Re: North-West Campus, Victor Havoc's Lab
Joshua nodded. He had become accustomed to learning since he had spent a lot of time learning with Havoc. His memory had improved dramatically, using visualisation and association techniques that were incredibly powerful.

"Sure Miss. According to Dr Grossner, the first outbreak of a mutants ability can be used to form an assumption about the potential of a mutant. Some mutants may show an early promise, though their outbreak display is not sufficient to cause direct panic. These often go on to become more powerful than those who show a strong outbreak during puberty."

He wonders what it has to do with his parents. "Of course, if a youngster or infant were to show an incredibly large response at such an early age, the authorities and world should be concerned. From what I understand, these mutants may have world breaking powers that in the wrong hands would be incredibly dangerous."

"Joshua, on your second birthday, you had a manifestation." What she is telling you is contrary to what you previously believed. Early childhood manifestations are rare, but not unheard of. They are usually more extreme, some times outright destructive. "Your first manifestation had predicted you as being... extremely powerful."

"What your father said was that you have had psychic blocks placed to stop the more extreme use and control of your powers. Partially to make you easier to hide, but also to protect others around you."

"He never intended you to be involved in a life of violence, but knew the choice was ultimately, yours to make."

Re: North-West Campus, Victor Havoc's Lab
"Define 'extremely powerful'. And what event? I can't remember anything?"

If Josh had been a psychiatrist he would have probably told himself he was in the denial stage. What had he done?

It certainly helped him understand why he had so much trouble getting his head around his powers.

"These blocks. If I understand brain science well enough, there are neural connections that are made, right? Someone basically came in and severed the access to my ability to control my abilities on a haphazard basis. Surely that's a recipe for disaster? Look what happened during my blackouts for christ's sake!" he curses. People were blind at times, himself included.

She frowns and steadies her voice. "Extremely powerful. There was an incident that became known as Cold snap." She glances at Havoc, who leans forward to be sure that he heard what she said correctly. He leans backs and nods as he considers what she just revealed.

"Some ten years ago, a mutant manifested and managed to freeze an entire ship. It was never determined what that was, but your father told me that he believes it was your first manifestation..."

Havoc shakes his head. "Freeze an entire ship? That's how you put? Somewhere off the coast of Ascension in the South Atlantic, something turned froze an entire kilometer of seawater into a goddamn iceberg! We are talking about just under half a gigajoule of energy give or take a tactical nuke!"

"Yes Victor, Joshua has potential to be very powerful." She maintains her calm. "Joshua, your mental blocks have not severed your powers, they keyed them to your defensive survival. If you want them removed, we can do that. However I want to advise you to have it done so gradually."

Re: North-West Campus, Victor Havoc's Lab
Joshua listened as the prospect of a half a gigajoule of power filtered through his brain. Was it really that much power he had handled? As an infant, that might mean that his potential as an adult was significantly higher...

"I don't know about removing them. I mean, if keying them to my defensive survival has me in the situation I'm in right now, then so far as I'm concerned it keeps me alive and kicking. Would removing the mental blocks also remove the defensive aspect?"

He sat down on one of the stools, taking it all in for a moment.

"No not really, right now your defensive powers are essentially permanently set to autopilot."

"We will simply be setting that off. You will have access to the rest of your powers."
He shrugs. "This is likely to fry your current abilities. I've seen something like this before, and you are going to have real difficulties adjusting."

"Well I don't know then. I kinda like being me. And what if I can't control things like the first time? I mean, who wants the college to go into permafrost if I have a bad dream in the night?" replies Josh, a little fearful of what could happen if unchecked.

"Isn't that why the mental blocks were in place to start with?"

"Things can be done gradually, you won't have to worry about losing control." Elsa says comfortingly. "This place was made so we can all be better. Jason is capable, with a little guidance."

"Well, thats good. But what about your role? The way I see it, you and I seem to have a lot in common. We should at the minimum arrange some tutoring. I'm willing to bet that you can get me up to speed much quicker, even if its just by allowing Jason access to your thoughts when using your talents. " suggests the youth.

Re: North-West Campus, Victor Havoc's Lab
Victor remains tight lipped about the discussion. He eases off the more combative aspects of Joshua's apprenticeship. Of noteworthy progress, Joshua's flying machine took a metaphorical and literal leap forward. Using a capacitor device Havoc generally uses to store energy for his Warp Tech, Joshua (with some help from others) manage to create a device that lets him dump some of his own powers to temporarily charge it with kinetic energy. It launches him forward anywhere from five to fifteen feet, not to mention scaring the crap out of Caligula. Further developments look promising.

Elsa arranges a schedule for personal lessons with Joshua at the pit. There they practice the use of their powers. The energy emission has however been held back because Jason seems to be busy with something, he won't say what.

After a few days however, Rebecca manages to come through for Joshua and he has an outfit that would make any Steam-punk LARPer proud. How it will be received at the renaissance fair, well that remains to be seen.

Re: North-West Campus, Victor Havoc's Lab
With the advent of the capacitor technology, Joshua sees many practical applications; some of which are limited by the capacity of the capacitor. With a large enough pack, he could literally punch people across rooms if he configured it properly. It had definite applications.

The output right now wasn't quite stable enough for him to fly by the looks of things. But as a temporary means of upward travel it looked fine.

The access to the Dean was a blessing, though it must have felt like something of an annoyance to the Dean. There were a billion and one questions that Joshua had, but he held off for the most part and tried to listen to what she was saying rather than rushing off headlong down a path that would piss her off. He desperately wanted to learn how to control his powers beyond the level they were at already!

Re: North-West Campus, Victor Havoc's Lab
Josh was bored. No. Frustrated was the word. Dean Reign had gone over the mental exercises required to gauge the level of power contained in his body. It was quite technical, but interesting in terms of usable and practical applications. With the right use, it could potentially allow energy to be depleted at a rate equal to that being gained. It would also allow Josh to have an idea of the energy potential of his environment. The thing was, he had mastered it two days ago. Now it was getting boring.

Kicking his heels, he  wondered what the point of it was. She could fire energy blasts when she wanted, she could do light shows and all sorts of energy manipulation. Yet here he was becoming some sort of human thermometer.

He daren't risk the ire of his tutor, so he bit his lip and continued the lesson. Havoc worked in the same way, often boring the tears out of him until he had grasped some inane concept that a long dead scientist had dreamed up and then turning the table on its head completely by showing him an alternate warp theory.

It was maddening.

He had spent more and more time in the company of Viola, trying to understand just exactly what she got out of the college and what her interests outside of the college were. She had introduced him to a few third rate movies, and he could only laugh at the absurd acting and ludicrous props. He wanted to test his powers against hers, wondering how they would work against each other. If there was a mutant with a similar ability, he wanted to know if he was in danger at all. So far his mutation had canceled out all but psychic abilities. It was a definite advantage.

Change of Pace
When Joshua arrives to the lab, something is different. Elsa is crossing her arms listening to Victor talk at length about something, she rubs her temples not really wanting to listen to it but nodding at him droning on nonetheless. Of particular interest, Havoc is wearing a beat up grey blast suit generally reserved for more... exothermic experiments.

"Joshua honey..." She looks at you concerned. "I know that your working very hard... very, very, hard to bring this under control. I know things move slow but it's all for the best."

"I need to ask you, is anything wrong? You look stressed..."

"Stressed? Me? Not so much. I'm as care free as I can be. But you know, my life on the run was full of excitement. If I'm gonna be honest with you, I'm wondering what sort of field work is available for a guy like me. I know it didn't go down that great with the authorities, but the bar incident kinda got me excited. We did good work there, I think." replies the youngster.

"Field work? Field work!" He seems troubled at the notions. "You're a minor Joshua, you should intend to stay as far away from 'field work' as possible. Even if that weren't true, you are nowhere near ready." She turns to Victor shaking her head and making a fist towards Havoc.

Re: Change of Pace
Victor puts his hands up. "He needs to see what he can do. What he will be able to do Elsa." He stutters. "I mean Dean Reign." He glares lets him know that they are not exactly friends. The whole L.A. fiasco was behind her back and endangered her students. Victor was not atomized because she saw that Kimberly would have gone anyways.

"You talk about control and self discipline." He leans forward. "Why don't you show him exactly what that means." He stares at her unflinching.
