Hmm...  Nate's from Back East.  Come out to Deadwood to strike it rich and make his fortune.  Any other such folk?

Re: Nuttal

Zac's been traveling all around the country with his newspaper reporter father for about 12 years, so it's entirely possible he's crossed paths with someone in his journeys.

Re: Nuttal

Halleluja! Moses has arrived!

Sort of a travelling preacher, originally from the South.

About linked characters... a journalist might be interesting to explain some of Moses'... oddities. Interested, Zac?

Re: Nuttal

I'll throw this out there.  Anyone who wants to have a connection with the Professor, please PM me. For those of you from the East, you could have known him 2-6 years ago if you were from Boston.

For the past 2 years or so he has been wandering the west, so he could have very well met up with anyone who lives/wanders out there as well.

Just let me know if you want to set up a preexisting relationship.

Re: Connections

If people are curious about the phantom updates, I have a private thread that I use to collect the character backgrounds of those who've completed them. Once I have all these, I can begin making plots that tie into the backgrounds. The sooner I get these from people, the sooner we can begin the game.

Languages

Clever Stray is clever.

Noting Xiao's languages in the OOC thread as per house rules
whilst I remember:
- Mandarin (first language)
- Cantonese (proficient)
- English (moderate fluency)
- whatever the local L/Dakota dialect is (not fluent)

Re: Languages

Highly unlikely as it is, if by that you mean a random itinerant God-botherer speaks Angelic Cant (as in what True Name magic is based on) I will love you forever.

On the theme of superpowers and Western folk, chanced on this just recently:

...doesn't Wonderwoman look mighty fine in clothes? Kinda sad Superman's not wearing bright red trousers under dark chaps, though.

The steampunk Spiderman set's on the same site, since this is a gang that might like that sort of thing:

Re: Languages

Pretty cool pictures there, Tanxouette.

Now that my car situation is under control, I'm going to whip out my copies of Deadlands Reloaded and Savage Worlds Deluxe and pump out a character today.

Re: Languages

@ The Professor: You should. It may become important to know whether you can speak or read Cantonese as opposed to Mandarin.

So..in this era, which dialect is the most common.  Which do most residents of Shan Fan speak, for example?

Re: Languages

They are slightly more divergent from their common root than Italian and Spanish, if that helps...since both are highly tonal, trying to speak a mix would probably result in declaring one's Air-Cushion Accelerated Perambulator full of anguilliforms...go for Mandarin if you want to speak to the average coolie of the period.

Re: Languages

In reply to Thunder Walker (msg # 38):

You should also refer to the Character Creation thread, as I have some extra Edges there that don't appear in either book. Also, the Last Son's Players Guide has a TON of information about Indian characters...I strongly urge you to look at that as well.

@ Tan: The language of the local Sioux is Siouan: Mandans, Hidatsas, Crow, Lakota (Sioux), and other small Plains tribes.

In reply to ThunderVega (msg # 38):

They made me go eee. Also, cars work better with petrol in than characters, unless they're diesel cars.

@Stray: Siouan covers a lot of dialects - what I meant was that what Xiao knows will have been casually picked up around town/as per necessity; whatever's most common in the area with an even lower comprehension of other Siouan speech, rather than the general comprehension available to a lingistic scholar. Is all. You should probably stop encouraging me to ramble about linguistics whilst you can still get me to stop, though.

Re: Languages

For an Indo-European example, I can read Catalan or Occitan due to fluency in French and Spanish (the "big tribes" on either side of the dialect areas), but confronted with a speaker of either I can understand maybe one word in three, and certainly can't reply without sounding like the Incredible Hulk. Unlike me, Xiao lacks the advantage of text. Yes?

Oh, and I think Mose's "theme song" is now definitely Red Right Hand, what say you?

Hey Natewood, you ever been down as far as Albiene in your easterly wanderings? It might not be enough connection to net you an Advance, but in the right circumstances it might help glue you to the plot/posse if all else fails.
