Chapter 5.1:  Deadwood Smoldering ((Deadwood PCs))

September 17th, 1880. Midday. Deadwood, Sioux Nations

some mood music

quote:
On this day, September 14th, in the year of our Lord Eighteen Hundred and Eighty, in light of the treacherous attack on Deadwood town by renegade Indians and Indian collaborators, it is hearby decreed that the civilian government, being inadequate for the task of protecting the people and interests of Deadwood, is dissolved. A new election will be held once hostilities with the Sioux Indians has been ended. In the interim, Deadwood is hearby placed under Martial Law, in the pursuit of order and peace.

Signed

George Armstrong Custer, General, Army of the United States of America

Re: Chapter 5.1:  Deadwood Smoldering ((Deadwood PCs))

The takeover was swift and complete. The ink was not even dry on the decree of martial law when the soldiers began "enforcement."

Army medics were called to tend to the wounded. Martha and Sol Star survived the attack, though Martha was gravely injured and would require a great deal of care. Seth Bullock was informed that until new elections took place, he was no longer the Marshal of Deadwood, and someone else would be appointed to the position in his place. He was released from custody in order to provide care for his wife. Han Lee has been assisting him with his fancy healing techniques.

The mutual accusations of Jackie Wells and Janet Weiss against each other did very little except get the both of them considered troublemakers. They are being held until a new Marshal is appointed by Custer to hear the case.

James Wilder and James Lonefeather were released from custody after giving statements and receiving care for their injuries. Back they went to their rooms DMA stockade. It's suggested that if he wants to head out into Indian Country to search for his pistol, he should contact a fellow named Maddox, who is a bounty hunter.

Logan West, Freiherr von Steinhoff, Lt. Haverford, and the Indian Kohanna discussed many things, long into the night. Von Steinhoff has become something of a local hero for "valor against the renegades," and everywhere he goes soldiers wish to buy him drinks.

Ezekial Starkweather snuck into the army camp and liberated several sticks of dynamite, only to find when he went to destroy Fairchild's Boarding house that it was no longer there, and no-one he asked could remember a boarding house ever being in that spot. About the only thing left for Zek to do is settle up with Maddox.

Black Jack Bordreaux discovered that the marshal's office a smoldering wreck, and was forced to look elsewhere for answers. He ran into a bounty hunter named Maddox, who claimed he had captured Calamity Jane, but that Jane escaped his custody. Calamity Jane has not been seen since the fire and it is presumed she has skipped town to avoid murder charges. Maddox, however, has agreed to help Black Jack out, as he no longer has a shot at being elected Marshal while military rule is in effect. The two made plans to meet at the Woolly Buffalo Saloon to grab a bite and discuss their plans.

Quietly and with little fanfare, a new saloon opened up on main street, near the railroad tracks. But if you asked people about it, they would swear up and down that the Lady Gray Saloon had always been there, and that it had a colorful history...

((OOC: And that's a quick summation of the situation in Deadwood as the new thread starts. Janet and Jackie are in holding, Starkweather and Wilder being pointed toward Maddox, who is meeting up with Black Jack to discuss tracking down Charley Bull, while Von Stienhoff and Logan West are investigating things and may get drawn into this.

Everyone is healed up. Clear all your wounds.

Anything else you guys want to accomplish before we start the scene proper?))

Re: Chapter 5.1:  Deadwood Smoldering ((Deadwood PCs))

As the days roll on, life begins to get back to somewhat normal in Deadwood.

Custer's troops begin building berms and fortifications around the city.

Ground is broken on a fort half a mile from town. Fort Custer begins to take shape in the ruins of Lead, a ghost town near the Homestake Mines.

Construction begins on a building in the Gem's lot. Most of the work involves hauling away the burned, bloody wood and disposing of it.

Nuttal & Mann's No. 10 Saloon is closed following the sad news of Tom Nuttal's death. His funeral is closed-casket.

People talk about a lot of strange things. About how the Bella Union seems to have a new coat of red paint and how sometimes the roulette wheels and one-armed bandits swing by themselves. Another case of "heart failure" occurs, the withered body belonging to a soldier instead of a miner this time. Drunken, unreliable tales of appearances by Hickok's ghost rise, and are conflated with tales of a wriggling skeleton with tentacles bursting out of its chest spotted in an empty lot where nothing at all used to be. Hyrum and Cynthia Burns, wanted by the military police for "questioning," seem to have dropped off the face of the earth, their cabin out by Satan's Garden hastily abandoned. A mysterious buyer makes a generous offer on the lot, far more than it is worth, but the OMA is in no position to finish brokering the deal.

The Woolly Buffalo is down on Deadwood Street, near the creek. Jack remembers it well--he met Calamity Jane outside it just before heading up to the cemetery. The building next door to the saloon is a gutted wreck...must have caught during the fires. Jack steps inside.

Inside, Black Jack finds himself in a welcome environment. Patrons chat up saloon girls, miners play poker, a bartender pours drinks...and just about everyone in here is colored, like himself.

The bartender, a handsome fellow with long curly hair gathered up under a large sombrero, grins at him as he enters.

"Well, howdy there!" He says. "Always nice to see a new face in these parts. What'll you have?"

Han Lee strode down the street trying to ignore the overt Union presence as best as possible.  These soldiers seemed itchin' to shoot anything, and he honestly was not certain they could tell the difference between Han and a Sioux Brave. Despite the ever present risk, Han had patients to look in on.

Ancestors willing, this whole Custer mess will be over soon and the regular townsfolk may look at Han differently on account of him helping the sheriff and all. With that thought in mind he turned down the road to head to Seth Bullock's house and see on his recovering wife.

Bullock's house had been destroyed by fire by the cultists, so his friend Sol had put him up in his own home.

"Doctor Lee!" Sol says as he opens the door at Han Lee's knock. "Good to see you. Come."

Sol, being one of the respectable citizens of Deadwood, has a very nice house built in the Queen Anne style. Bullock and his wife were up in the second-flood guest room. Inside, Bullock was sitting by his wife's side, silently holding her hand.

Martha had survived the gunshot, but was still gravely wounded. The bullet had smashed her jaw, rendering her unable to speak and only able to drink liquids. Her jaw would require very advanced medicine to repair, the sort of treatment not available in Deadwood. Even Han Lee's special techniques had not been able to help much.

Bullock was still quiet. He didn't seem to have noticed Han Lee entering the room.

In reply to Ezekiel Starkweather (msg # 29):

Zek's digging bears fruit. With Custer swinging his weight around, word is that the elections for Sheriff have been put on hold. That means Maddox's political ambitions were dashed, at least for now. He'd have to return to his original profession to make ends meet. That means bounty hunting and scouting. Zek couldn't get a lead on where he was staying, but he DID get a lead on where he was meeting prospective clients.

The Woolly Buffalo Saloon was a swingin' place in the south of town. The patrons were largely African-American, but it wasn't an exclusively segregated bar and white patrons mixed with black ones. Zek would stand out a bit, but not terribly so.

Zek would not care if it was a bar that only allowed in cactus-he was going to get answers. Even if he had to beat it out of Maddox. He proceeded to head there, trying to keep his temper in check. However, that voice in his head was whispering to him. Start with the eyes. Once one is torn from the sockets, a man will suddenly do anything to save his other eye rather than live in darkness...

Normally he would tell the voice to shut up. Not that it worked, but he would say it. This time he was wondering if he would end up doing the very thing it was describing...and worse, enjoy it. What was he becoming?

He might have to spend some money, spread it around, and see if anyone was willing to tell Zek where he was. That was fine-he saved a lot of money from not having to eat, drink, or even wash his clothes too often. some mood music

@ James Wilder

Jimmy nods. "I truly hope so, as well."

The two bounty hunters made their way to the Woolly Buffalo, in the southern part of Deadwood. Jimmy looks over at the ruins of a hardware store next to the saloon, and sucks in his breath. "Damn..." he mutters, though he doesn't elaborate.

The two enter the Saloon and are greeted by a sea of brown faces. It looks like this place was popular with the African-American miners of Deadwood. A serving girl comes over to them.

"Well, howdy there!" she says. "Looking for a seat? I'm afraid we ain't got any empty tables, so you'll have to share. Or, if it's libation you're after, there are plenty of seats open at the bar."

"Actually, we're looking for a fellow named Maddox. Is he in?" Jimmy asks.

"Not that I've seen." The serving girl says. "But he usually comes in for lunch and to meet with folk, so if you boys want to have a seat and get a bite to eat, I'm sure he'll be along shortly."

Ezekiel nursed his whiskey and waited. A pair of rough-looking hardcases wandered into the saloon. One was a lanky man with a scruffy beard and a streak of white in his otherwise dark brown hair. The other was a lean man with dark skin, mixed ancestry of some sort, in dark clothes and with a gatling pistol on his hip. An ugly rope burn circled the man's neck.

Zek's ears perked up when the half-breed with the rope burn mentioned Maddox.

Zek looked over the two carefully. Chances are he was not the only fella in town who want to 'bury the hatchet' with Maddox. In his face most likely. He waited for the two to sit, and sized them up. The hanging scar was not a good sign. Nor the fancy shooter one of them wore. He waved over the waitress, and slipped her a dollar. "What did those fellas say about Maddox?" He whispered to her.

The two are seated and order. They are most of the way through their meal when a moderately handsome man with blue-black hair and green eyes steps into the Woolly Buffalo. He's got a Smith & Robards bulletproof vest on. One of the serving girls points to James and Jimmy. The man nods and tips his hat to her. He wanders over to the table, easing his coat back to reveal a revolver.

"'Allo." he says. He has a strange accent, not quite English and not quite Irish. He fiddles with his revolver a moment, making sure it's limber, but then moves his hand away from it. "You're looking for me, I understand. This is about a job, is it?"

"Tried to walk in, did you?" Maddox says. "I can see how that might not have gone over so well. All arrivals to Deadwood are supposed to come in by train, but there's enough as can't afford the prices Iron Dragon charge and try to come in by stage or horseback. I have a way around that." He slowly reaches into his jacket, careful not to make sudden movements least he provoke someone, and pulls out a hooked stick that has been notched, feathered, wrapped in colorful yarn, and beaded. "This here is a prospecting permit, though some idiots call them coup sticks. You'd think the OMA would issue a stamped handbill or certificate, but most Lakota don't read and don't care to learn to. Instead, they make up these sticks. The placement of the beads, the way the feathers are cut, the type of fur or leather used for the handle...all of it means something. If you present one of these to a Sioux patrol and claim you're out prospecting, they're supposed to notch it along the bottom here and send you on your way unless there's no space to notch, in which case they snap it and drag you behind their horses back to Deadwood. I've heard of people trying to fake them, but most yahoos who try don't know enough about what it all means to fake it convincingly, which means they get a beating when the Lakota catch them. This one is genuine. I bought it to chase bounties out in the Hills. With this we should be safe enough from most bands of Sioux. So whereabouts are we going, and what is it you lost?

That made him raise an eyebrow. Why take all that risk for a pistol? Even if it was the one your family handed down or some such? The only one he had heard recently talking about special pistols was Wild Bill. Zek had gone looking for a way to those very pistols-which were indeed very special. Could this be the same?

So when I tell you that I want that pistol back, don't think of it as petty trinket or bobble. Regard it as an item of great value me such that it causes me great pain to not have it with me. Its pain on a level which I would rather burn this town to the ground than leave that pistol to rust out in the wilderness such as it is." Re: Chapter 5.1:  Deadwood Smoldering ((Deadwood PCs))

Zek was getting tired of waiting. Was Maddox putting on another show, trying to appear as Mr Pure and Noble to take another sucker for a ride? Maybe to shoot them in the back, and take thier things? Or did he have another horrible supernatural force waiting that required 'feeding'?

Zek looked around at the crowd, and wondered if he could get the man outside somehow. Maybe making Maddox's potential employers aware of his betrayal might get them on Zek's side-but he rather doubted it. However, just jumping Maddox would certainly get everyone against him.

No, the best way might be to play it steady-and not give in to his fury. While at the same time getting the two other men at the table aware of Zek's legit grude. At the very least they may stay out of any tussle that Maddox and him end up getting into.

He signaled at waitress, and got a drink-but not for him. He walked over and placed it in front of Maddox.

"I got you a drink for old times, Maddox." He growled. "Here is your 10 dollars back...I owe you that." He put the money in front of the man as well. "Now, how about you give me what you owe...and tell me why you tried to kill me!? How about any other people you brought to that house!? How about you telling me if Jane is even alive!?"

Distracted or not, Zek is still able to get an arm around Maddox, who swings the butt of his pistol into the mountain man's face. There's a cracking of bone as Zek's nose gives...but he doesn't really seem to feel the blow. Not as he once would have.

"Setup? What the fuck are you on about?" Maddox snarls. "You skipped out on me."

((OOC: So, the trick is a -2 to Zek's Parry. He still can keep the grapple going. However, Maddox has had Deflection up since he walked into the bar.

10:38, Yesterday: Maddox rolled 13,5 using d6,d6, rerolling max with rolls of (6+6+1)13,5. Spellcasting.

That's a success and raise, so Zek's Grapple check is at -4, as are all other attempts to attack Maddox while he maintains the spell.

16:21, Today: Ezekiel Starkweather rolled 12,6 using d6+2,d12+2, rerolling max with rolls of (6+4)10,4. Grapple check.

Reduced by the deflection, that's an 8. Maddox makes an opposed Fighting check to resist.

15:16, Today: Maddox rolled 1,2 using d10,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 1,2. Resist Grapple.

...

You had one job, Maddox. One job.

That's a total of 6 for Zek, so that means Maddox is grappled, though he isn't Shaken.

Maddox's action is at the same time, and he was going to pistol whip Zek.

15:20, Today: Maddox rolled 6,1 using d10-1,d6-1, rerolling max with rolls of 7,2. Fighting! with Improvised Weapon.

That hits Zek's Parry of (5-2 from the trick) 3.

Maddox deal 16 damage, but because Harrowed don't take nonlethal damage, it really just makes Zek more mad.

Seth Bullock:
Bullock looks over at his wife. "You may be right. Him and that Princess of Worms. And then...then they will learn what it is to try and break a man and fail." He says. "Besides, I also need to get Jackie out of custody. No one is going to intimidate her."

He stands up. Martha murmers something. He bends over and gives her a quick kiss. "I'll see you soon. I have something to take care of. I love you."

Han will follow along with the Marshall, trying to project some optimism or at the very least strong support for the man who has helped him so much in Deadwood.

"Do you think the army will give you trouble, Marshall?"

The two walk as they talk, heading back into the streets of Deadwood.

"I should hope not. Custer's law or not, I'm still the...marshal...of..." Bullock trails off, and looks down the road. "Does that sound like a fight to you?" He asks, pointing toward the Woolly Buffalo.

He looked at the gun, still frowning. Having gained the advanatge on Maddox, he tossed him to the ground-but he did let him go. He then grabbed his own nose, and craked it back into postion. If it hurt, he gave no sign. (OOC-Rolled a max 5. Intimidation checked worked. Figure that will end combat.)

He did look at the gun, and at James. Then he glared down at Maddox.

"Maddox, you lying shit, why would I come here and give you BACK the money if I skipped out on you!? I wanted McCall, remember? That is the only reason I took your money-because I told you I needed to talk to Jane about McCall! You sent me to me the Fairchild House! Mr Fairchild took me to Jane...you know, dark-haired fella, gray suit stovepipe hat, tinted spectacles!? His Brother-the red head dandy? Cousin Dolores-the one who is out of her damn mind!? The other witch who lives there!? THEY HAVE JANE! THEY ARE KILLING HER! YOU SENT ME THERE!" He roared.

What Maddox did see however, is that Zek was standing on his ankel. Expect he was not 'standing' on it. His foot was passing right through Maddoxs leg like it was not even there.

He slams his fist into the window, cracking it. "FUUUUUUUUUUCK!"

"Sebastian! That fucking Sebastian! I should have known! I should have known he was leading me on! And he's brought the whole fucking family here, hasn't he?" He looks back at Zek. "I suppose I owe you a great apology. A bloody massive one, I do. I sent you there, it's true, but as God is my witness, I didn't know. I didn't know what they were planning. Hell's bells, I didn't know the others were in town! I should have told him and his whole bloody Society to sod off and die the moment I ever laid eyes on him!"

Bullock nods. "Let's go."

The two of them make their way to the Woolly Buffalo Saloon. There's a crack in one of the large bay windows, and some shouting going on inside. No gunfire as yet, so it must still be mostly fisticuffs.

Bullock draws his pistol and steps through the wing doors. He pops off two shots.

{BANG! BANG!}

"Everybody, FREEZE!" he shouts, and points his pistol towards the group of brawlers.

Han Lee can see Wilder and Lonefeather, the two bounty hunters who assisted him and Bullock last night. They have guns drawn on a thick mountain man and a sturdy fellow with blue-black hair and a Smith & Robards bulletproof vest.

Maddox:
"And as for you..." he looks Zek right in the eye. "I'm sorry. So very, very sorry. I got you into this, I did. I have to get you back out. Truce?"

Zek seemed...shocked at the words. Nobody ever apoligized to him. Really about anything. Expect Dancing Deer of course. She had apologized for being a burden-which was silly. She had given him more than he ever did for her. It was at that point he had asked her and her son to live with him. She had said yes...which most likely ended up getting her killed.

He looks lost, and he did not know what to do now. Anger was his first, second, and thrid option. All he had left was vengence. He was going to kill those bastards in the house, and destory the house-make Jane tell him how to find McCall, use that to kill Hickok, and finally, finally end Swearengen and his loathsome men. Then he could do what dead men where suppose to do...

Kill him anyways! Kill the one with the gun! Then kill the witnesses! Burn the bar to the ground, and torch the whole town to be sure you get the house! Came the insane inner voice only Zek could hear. Trying to convince Zek of the 'better' way.

"Dammit, Maddox! Why did you have to do that for!? Now I can't keep hitting you!" He grumbled, shaking his head. He sounded like he was serious, but very irrational.

{BANG! BANG!}

Zek did not see anyone hit, and he did not feel any holes in him. Not that he expected any given his 'percautions.' He turned around and saw the Tin Star. "I don't even have my gun out..." He growled, raising his clearly empty hands. He did not to his pistol still in its holster, and maybe a little dusty due to lack of use.

Re: Chapter 5.1:  Deadwood Smoldering ((Deadwood PCs))

"Well, hello again, Marshal Bullock." Lonefeather says as he stows his gun. "Don't worry, it seems to be a misunderstanding which the parties are sorting out..."

Bullock glares at the dark-haired gunman. "Maddox." He growls.

"Mr. Bullock." The gunman replies coolly, returning his pistol to his holster very, very slowly.

"What the hell is going on here, Maddox? Why are you wrapped up in all this?"

"Long story. Let me sum up. During the fire at The Gem, I apprehended Calamity Jane on suspicion of murder, attempted murder, and conspiracy to commit murder, as well as probably a dozen other charges. I tried hauling her to jail, to deposit in your custody, only you weren't there and your jail was burned to the ground. So I attempted to keep my prisoner contained until I could find out just what the bloody hell had happened. I rented a room at local boarding house by yir owned by some family of mine in order to keep her stowed somewhere handy. I then hired this gentleman," Here he points to Zek, "to watch over her until I could either find out what had happened to you or to find her accomplice, who is said to have been dressed as the deceased Wild bill Hickok. Unable to accomplish either in the time I had allotted, I returned to the boarding house, only to discover both this gentleman and Calamity Jane missing, and my relations claiming to have no idea what happened to either. I suspected that this gentleman had absconded with my money and left Jane to her own devices, allowing her to escape." He sighs. "This morning, I came here to see if anyone had a job that needed doing. I was speaking with these gentlemen," here he points to Wilder and Lonefeather, "about a proposed expedition when this gentleman," back to Zek, "attacked me in a rage, claiming that I had 'set him up.' somehow. Further discussion revealed that my relations had apparently done something, I don't know what, to him and Jane, and that he escaped the situation to confront me over it. Cooler heads were prevailing when you showed up, and that's where we are now."

Bullock listens to all this impassively. "I should bring you all in just on general principle."

"You have neither the jail nor the authority to hold us anymore." Maddox says. "Not since Custer took over. And he's suspended the elections, too, which means that I'm not your problem. My relations, however, are. Can we put our hands down now, and talk like civilized people?"

Bullock sighs, and uncocks his pistol. He looks at Zek. "Is what he's saying true, sir?"

"Yes it's true.  Marshal, this man is guilty of being a trusting idiot, something I myself am guilty of because of him!" He shakes his head.

"And he's right. That family of his is killing people in that hidden house of theirs, and using useful morons to bring them victums like Jane! And she knows about the Hickok murders and who really did them!" Technically so did Zek, but doubted anyone would believe a disappearing house, much less famous dead sharpshooters.

Re: Chapter 5.1:  Deadwood Smoldering ((Deadwood PCs))

Jack stood by listening to the story of the last few days be retold. He been at the heart of most of it, not something he was proud to say.He knew all too well that was not someone dressed up as Bill Hickok, well not exactly Bill Hickok there was something wrong with him. Something evil inside the man like a snake in the boot. Some thing like his grandmother would describe as an evil spirit they crawled up in the man to dug out of the grave. Boudreaux hoped he had put him in the grave but had is doubts.

For now Jack held his tongue. Lots of dark things that happened last night Jack didn't like the idea being hung for any of them. The name Sebastian didn't surprise him, the man had the same feel that's the thing that crawled up while bill but unlike bill Sebastian seemed glad to have such evil the glad to have such evil to draw on.

Finally as much as he wanted to stay out of it some reason Jack felt compelled to speak up. Folks were in danger, evil men at work, and  Jack hungry for payback.

"Sounds like you gentleman could use some help."

The shadow pulls itself into a more solid form at Janet's whispered words, exactly as it had done before when Roger had called it to frighten the miner, several days ago now.

"That's better. I'll be back in an hour." The shadow says, before sliding out of the room and away.
An hour later

A shadow passes underneath the door.

"Right. This bloody hotel is enormous, and it's filled with soldiers. They've made themselves right at home. One of them saw me out of the corner of his eye and took a potshot...he was shaking pretty badly, so he probably thought I was a product of his delirium tremens. There's three floors, plus the basement we're being held in. The ground floor is mostly restaurant, check-in, kitchens, storage, offices for the management, and a staff room. There was something going on in the staff room that you'll probably be interested in, but I'll get to that."

"The second floor is where most of the low-rent rooms are. Standard fare, pretty much. More bloody soldiers."

"The third floor are the posh rooms. Custer is staying in the best suite in the house, naturally, and he's made it something of a war room. Maps spread out, little figurines to represent troop movements, charts, the whole lot. It's also where I found Wells. She was in the middle of a conversation with Custer. I tried to nip closer and hear what they were talking about, and that cunt spotted me. She sprinkled some powder into the lantern that made it flare, and that hurt, so I bailed. Crept back here."

"I don't know where Custer's keeping her...she looked to be in the middle of an interrogation of some kind. You'll probably want to prepare your story sharpish, because I have the feeling you're next. But the really interesting bit was the group in the staff room. It was one of Custer's soldiers, a dapper fellow in what looked like a foreign uniform, a US Marshal, and an Injun. Picture that crew good and well, because I heard them talking about that crate Roger had you snatch."

some mood music

At Black Jack's shout, everyone in the bar looks around.

Surrounding the group, growing closer, are a band of a dozen men in black dusters, black hats, and black bandannas, with burning eyes and wicked blades clutched at the ready.

People begin screaming and running as the assassins appear. Maddox dives right through the window and out into the street. Nat Love over at the bar just stands stock still, staring.

Bullock draws his pistol. "Oh, you fuckers want some more? Last night wasn't enough? Well, I'm ready for ya! I will shoot you all down, you fucking dogs!"

Only James Lonefeather, his gatling pistol at the ready, seems calm and collected in all this. "Well. Here we go again." he says to Wilder.

((OOC: Every one of you passes. Congrats! Now you get to make Fear checks (-4 fear level, -1 monster penalty, + Grit). Also, draw a card for initiative.

I roll of the NPCs in this dance. Every one of them succeeds, too. This is not a good thing, because it means the Men In Black have no reason to keep up the pretense and go full-on monster. This provokes Fear checks from everyone. Most everyone in the bar fails.

NPC rolls

Maddox
Danger Sense: 13:36, Today: Maddox rolled 5,3 using d6,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 5,3. Danger Sense. Success, which means he skips the Smarts check
Fear: 13:57, Today: Maddox rolled 2,1 using d8-2,d6-2, rerolling max with rolls of 4,3. Fear. Fail
Fear effect: Panicked. Really, Maddox? Really? He moves his pace plus running die (total of 8 squares) and is Shaken.

James Lonefeather
Smarts: 13:37, Today: James Lonefeather rolled 3,5 using d8,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 3,5. Smarts. Success
Fear:13:59, Today: James Lonefeather rolled 10,7 using d6+2,d6+2, rerolling max with rolls of (6+2)8,5. Fear. Success. Lonefeather makes all the saves.

Fear: 13:56, Today: Seth Bullock rolled 0,-2 using d6-4,d6-4, rerolling max with rolls of 4,2. Fear. Fail
Fear Effect: Adrenaline Surge. Go Bullock! He gets +2 to all Trait and damage rolls he makes next round.

Smarts: 13:51, Today: Nat Love rolled 9,5 using d10,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 9,5. Smarts. Success
Fear: 13:55, Today: Nat Love rolled 1,2 using d6-3,d6-3, rerolling max with rolls of 4,5. Fear. Fail

If a lot of PCs fail thier fear test and are shaken, I will use the following card

6D - Rally

Spend a fate chip and play to cause all allies in sight and/or hearing to immediately lose their Shaken status.

I will use a white chip for it. I don't want to use that card if everybody makes thier fear test. I assume the card will effect NPCs that need it as well.

Janet makes her way through the walls and up into the storage room her Shadow mentioned. There, amid the boxes of cleaning supplies and clean linens, the soldiers seem to have erected a small makeshift armory. It isn't extensive, just a few Winchester '76 rifles, some bayonets, a few Colt Peacemakers, and boxes of bullets. There's also a Gatling gun, but it's the large, heavy kind that's set on a tripod, though for some obscure reason this one has been stored in what looks like a coffin. There are no Gatling pistols around.

James Wilder's gun barks, and one of the men in black goes down, dissolving with a scream into a greasy black mist that fills the air with the stench of sulfur and burnt Ghost Rock.

The rest of them converge on the group. Most of them take pleasure in attacking the bar maids trying to run for cover. One of them leaps onto a serving girl and bears her to the ground, stabbing her over and over again with gleeful abandon. Two more grab a different server and tug her in between them. She screams as they stab again and again, and there's a sickening *pop* as one of the men tears her arm out of the socket. Two more grab a defenseless old man and begin tugging him between each other, laughing at his screams as they stab him in the gut and spill his intestines.

Black Jack is tackled by two more, who begin tugging at him the same way...

Two more leap at James, knives flashing, and James sees death in their glowing red eyes...

And Han Lee is jumped by a couple more, their knives flashing, but he has a tick up his sleeve...

((OOC: One of the Men in Black goes down, the other is only grazed.

The Men in Black go.

2 move up the slice at James, two move to attack Black Jack, two go after Han Lee, and the rest attack townsfolk.

21:37, Today: Men In Black rolled 4,8 using d8+1,d8+1, rerolling max with rolls of 3,7. Grapple!

Jack, you need to make 2 Fighting Checks to avoid being grabbed. These are opposed rolls against their fighting checks above. If both hit you, they'll be able to do some massive damage.

Han Lee: You get your First Strike attack against one of the approaching bandits. I'll finish their turn on you when I know what's up.

21:42, Today: Men In Black rolled 6,6 using d8+1,d8+2, rerolling max with rolls of 5,4. Fighting! with Gang-Up bonus. 2 hits, no raise.

I resolve all the cooperative rolls, damage rolls, and so on, the upshot being that all the townies are Incapacitated, two by being torn apart and one by being stabbed repeatedly.

James' quick movements send one of the bandits careening into the other. The bandit plunges his blade into his partner's chest. The other bandit shrieks and vanishes into foul-smelling smoke.

Han Lee's attack is met with a par of flashing blades by the dark men. One of them score home, carving a nasty, bloody gash into the doctor.

"Lee!" Bullock shouts. He steps up to the man and puts his gun to the bandit's head, snapping off two quick shots. But though he's quick, the man in black is quicker, and is able to duck fast enough that the shots only send his hat flying and leave a bloody furrow in his bald head. The bandit cackles, spinning around to face the new threat. his ears are pointed.

Lonefeather scuttles around the corner, and rakes the Men in Black with Gatling fire. The men are super-humanly quick, though, and the half-breed bounty hunter is only able to score flesh wounds on them.

((OOC: The Men In Black finish their attack against Han Lee. Their gang-up bonus doesn't matter because Lee has Martial arts.

Seth Bullock takes his action. He's pumped from his adrenaline rush, which gives him +2 on trait rolls and damage. He will also Double-Tap, for an additional +1. He attacks the one that just wounded his friend, which means he has to beat their Parry of 6 since he's in Melee Range of the guy.

12:17, Today: Seth Bullock rolled 8,4 using d10+3,d6+3, rerolling max with rolls of 5,1. Shooting! Hit, but not a raise thanks to having to attack against Parry.

Damage: 11, which will make the MIB he shot Shaken but is just shy of a wound.

Card: KH.

James Lonefeather takes his action next, and he brought a Gatling Pistol to a knife fight. He moves to where he can get a good shot at two of the MIBs, and lets out a burst.

12:29, Today: James Lonefeather rolled 4,6,1 using d10,d10,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 4,6,1. Rock and Roll! 2 hits.

Damage 1: 5
Damage 2: 2.

Well, that did diddly.

Card for next turn: 7D))

Han Lee, resolve your damage and take your turn. Zek is up after that.

Wherever Han's mind was and whatever he was thinking, it is no clear of all but this moment, in this place.

The cut seared away all trappings of this world and with a deep breath in and then an exhale Han felt the pain drift away into nothing.

Han then swung his arms in a small circle in front of him, muttering in Cantonese: [Language unknown: She k stfi, an inon sta inethisan. Ine ndur sa tintic fi eltha.]

Man, your npcs are rolling like I want to roll.

Spending my last white chip to soak!

15:35, Today: Doctor Han Lee rolled 22,9 using 1d8,1d6, rerolling max with rolls of (8+8+6)22,(6+3)9. Vigor test to soak.

Now that is what I am talking about. Zen mind, no pain.

15:47, Today: Doctor Han Lee rolled 1,4 using 1d4,1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 1,4. Activate quickness.

So spent one White.

EDIT: Initiative for next turn.
17:30, Today: Doctor Han Lee drew the single card: KC using a deck of 54 cards. initiative.

Zek roars with outrage at the senseless murders. He charges the closest one on Black Jack, and proceeds to punch the...man...if they are indeed men, right in the face. "I am gonna beat you bastards to death! You don't murder old men and women in our town, you cowardly yellow bellys!" His voice carries throughout the entire bar.

(OOC-Attacking one trying to grapple Black Jack. Doing a wild attack. Possible team up bonus if I can double team one on him, but as they are two I doubt it.

15:58, Today: Ezekiel Starkweather rolled 3,7 using d6+2,d6+2, rerolling max with rolls of 1,5. Wild attack. Total of 8 with Team up.

Zek's fist sends the man staggering, and knocks his hat off in the process. His head is bald, his eyes are red, and with the hat gone Zek can see these things have pointed ears. The man giggles at him, and Zek realizes that if these things were men once, they certainly aren't any more.

((OOC: Han Lee, Zek, make sure you draw cards for your next turn's initiative once you've finished your actions.

Nice roll, Han. Though what were you spending the Red Chip for? Just trying to get a raise? Martial Artists, unlike other ABs, don't suffer any issues when they roll 1's.

Zek, your punch is going to make the thing Shaken. You probably should save the Rally for when it's really needed.))

Re: Chapter 5.1:  Deadwood Smoldering ((Deadwood PCs))

some mood music

The ground shakes, and two of the bandits go flying at Damballa's might. They're hurled back into the wall, and lay there, stunned. One of them was still standing, and took a swing as Black Jack as he passed, but the loa were still with him and the attack missed. Black Jack winds up near the broken window.
Outside, Maddox shakes glass out of his duster and stands. The fight seemed to still be ongoing. he looked around the street and saw some soldiers.

"Hey!" He shouts. "Hey you there! We got trouble by yir!"

The soldiers look at each other in askance, then run up to the bounty hunter.

"What's the fuss?" one says.

"It's a bushwacking, it is." Maddox pants. "Dozen of 'em. We need to stop them, before they kill everyone!" he pulls his pistol. "Well? Come on, then! You wanted Deadwood so badly...you're the law now. DO something!"

A small, glowing green card, the Ace of Spades, twirls through the air...and then explodes into a ball of brilliant green energy.

{{BOOM!}}

The jade fire washes over Wilder, Black Jack, Bullock, and Zek, as well as some of the bandits caught in the edge.

Wilder feels the fire burning not only his body, but his soul...

Black Jack is able to use the table and the protection of the loa to escape the worst of the blast...

Bullock's jacket catches fire as the flames wash over him, but he strips the burning coat off before he can suffer any true harm...

The spiritual energy in the green flames kicks Zek like a mule, sending him staggering...
The explosion seems to have cleared Nat Love's mind.

"You goddamn sons of whores!" He shouts, pulling a scattergun from beneath the bar. He sights along the barrel, and lets loose at two of the men in black.

{{BLAM! BLAM!}}

The shot rips through the bandits. One of them vanishes into greasy black smoke. The other stumbles, injured but still standing. He looks up to face the burning rage in the cowboy's eyes.

"I am gonna end you, you yellow-bellied cowards! Ain't no one comes into my place and kills my people and gets away with it!"

((OOC: I have a ton of NPCs to get through, but let's see how the magic Black Jack called up does.

The Men in Black make Strength checks at -2 to avoid being blasted. There are 3 of them that get caught in the template.

12:55, Today: Men In Black rolled 3,5,2 using d8-2,d8-2,d8-2, rerolling max with rolls of 5,7,4. Strength. Since this is just a normal check for them, one of them makes it. The other two go flying back into the wall, and are Prone and Shaken.

The one that made his roll tries to attack Black Jack as he moves.

12:59, Today: Men In Black rolled -1 using 1d8-4, rerolling max with rolls of 3. Fighting! Flat miss.

Maddox: Maddox, outside, attempts to Unshake.

13:01, Today: Maddox rolled 5,5 using d8,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 5,5. Unshake.

That's a success, so he gets an Action at -2. He uses it to call for the Cavalry.

Card: 10C

Nicodemus Whately: Nic attempts to toss a blast big enough to affect multiple targets and deal a bunch of damage. He will Deal with the Devil for enough power to pull this off. He needs at least a Straight in order to do this. If successful, he will catch Wilder, Black Jack, Zek, and Bullock in the Large Burst Template, as well as two of his own goons.

13:12, Today: Nicodemus Whateley drew the 14 cards: 7C, 5H, 10S, QC, JD, 8S, 4H, JC, 10D, AS, QD, 2C, 9H, 7H using the Deadlands system. Deal with the Devil. Straight, which is a success on the Deal.

13:18, Today: Nicodemus Whateley rolled 6,2 using d12+1,d6+1, rerolling max with rolls of 5,1. Spellcasting. Success.

Damage for Black Jack: 7. You have 4 Armor against this thanks to your Deflection power, so it doesn't even scratch you.

Damage for Zek: 8. That will make you Shaken. Before you ask, this is magic damage, so being ghosted wouldn't help against it. And besides, you were solid to punch a dude, and you can only switch between states once per round.

Damage for Wilder: 22. Of course. Because the die roller hates you. That's another 4 wounds and Incapacitation unless you soak.

Damage for Bullock: 18. Well, at least Wilder isn't the only one the die roller hates. That's 3 wounds and Shaken for Bullock unless he soaks.

Bullock attempts to soak: 13:30, Today: Seth Bullock rolled 1,16 using d8,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 1,(6+6+4)16. Soak! Wow.

Damage for Men in Black: 8, which makes the 3 MiBs Shaken.

Damage for the Townsfolk: 14, which drops the poor bystander.

Nic then walks calmly over to the bar and takes a drink.

Card: AD

Nat Love: Nat Love needs to unshake.

13:37, Today: Nat Love rolled 11,2 using d6,d6, rerolling max with rolls of (6+5)11,2. Unshake. He does, with a raise. He gets an action with no penalty.

He draws his scattergun from behind the bar and unloads both barrels at the nearest MIBs. He has Marksman, which cancels out the MAP. He gets a further +2 for using buckshot, which is canceled out by the Autofire penalty for using both barrels. It's a straight roll for him.

13:41, Today: Nat Love rolled 10,7,9 using d8,d8,d6, rerolling max with rolls of (8+2)10,7,(6+3)9. Shooting! Two hits with Raises.

Damage 1: 10. Shaken
Damage 2: 15. 1 Wound and Shaken, which takes it down.

Card: 3D

The Townsfolk left use their action diving under tables or otherwise running for cover.))

Turn Order:
Nicodemus Whateley: AD
Seth Bullock: KH
Han Lee: KC
Men in Black: KC
Ezekiel Starkweather: JS
Maddox: 10C
James Lonefeather: 7D
Black Jack: 6H
James Wilder: 4H (Needs to soak 3 wounds!)
Nat Love: 3D
Townsfolk: last

Wilder, resolve your damage, and then I'll move on to Nic's next action.

Zek, watching for the guy Black Jack pointed out, spots at floating shot glass...just as three nearly invisible streams of ghostly white energy slam into him with the force of high-caliber bullets...

Bullock, meanwhile, takes a step back and continues to pump shots into the man in black. It finally dissolves into greasy black smoke, leaving Han Lee only a single bandit to face.

((OOC: Nicodemus goes at the top of the round, which is bad for all of you, but most especially bad for Zek, whom he's here to deal with specifically.

He Deals with the Devil for 3 Power Points, enough to get 3 2d6 bolts going.

18:05, Today: Nicodemus Whateley drew the 14 cards: 3H, QS, AH, 10D, JC, 5S, 6S, AC, 6H, 3C, 6C, 4H, 5D, 7S using the Deadlands system. Deal with the Devil. Full House, which means his spell goes off with a Raise, bumping the damage of all his bolts to 3d6. He just has to hit with them.

18:13, Today: Nicodemus Whateley rolled 2,5,2,5 using d12+1,d12+1,d12+1,d6+1, rerolling max with rolls of 1,4,1,4. bolt. Two hits, no backlash.

Damage 1: 10. Shaken for Zek, which, since he's already Shaken, results in 1 wound unless he soaks.
Damage 2: 16. 2 wounds for Zek unless he soaks (this requires a separate roll)

Card: 3H

Bullock: Bullock wants to finish the job on the one he'd shot, so he steps back (avoiding an attack because the goon is Shaken) and Double-Taps again.

18:24, Today: Seth Bullock rolled 5,3 using d10+1,d6+1, rerolling max with rolls of 4,2. Shooting! with Double Tap.

Damage: 10, which makes the thing Shaken. Since it was already Shaken, it takes a wound and dies. Han Lee only has one dude on him now.

Card: QD))

The Man in Black strikes back at Han, but Han's righteous and harmonious kicks deflect the bandit's aim.

Meanwhile, two of the bandits reeling from the blast recover. Sensing weakness, they pounce on Zek, knives flashing, giggling with mad glee.

The Man in Black closest to Wilder also giggles madly as he stabs at the bounty hunter, again and again.

((OOC: 6 of the remaining 8 MIBs are Shaken, so I need to roll to see if they get better.

09:59, Today: Men In Black rolled 7,5,3,1,3,2 using d10,d10,d10,d10,d10,d10, rerolling max with rolls of 7,5,3,1,3,2. Unshake. That's 2 successes, no Raises, so They get attacks but at a -2 penalty.

Han Lee is attacked by one of the MiBs. The two MiBs that unshook go after the wounded Ezekiel. The last one is next to James Wilder and tries to fillet him again.

Han Lee: The bandit attacking you has no penalties or bonuses.

10:03, Today: Men In Black rolled 2 using 1d8, rerolling max with rolls of 2. Fighting! Miss.

Ezekiel: Like sharks, the MiBs smell blood and want more. They have a -2 penalty from unshaking without a raise, a +1 Gang-up bonus, and they Wild Attack for an additional +2 Attack and Damage. That makes their net bonus to hit +1.

10:06, Today: Men In Black rolled 5,7 using d8+1,d8+1, rerolling max with rolls of 4,6. Fighting! with Wild Attack. Two hits

Damage 1: 10, which will be a Wound unless you spend a chip to Soak or Unshake. If you Unshake, you're Shaken again.
Damage 2: 8, which is also a Wound unless you spend a chip to Soak or Unshake. If you Unshake, you're Shaken again.

James Wilder: The one attacking you has an Unshaken ally adjacent. The ally is attack Zek, but that doesn't really matter--he grants a +1 Gang-up bonus anyway.

"Well?" Maddox says.

"Say, ain't that the nigger bar?" one of the soldiers says.

"I do believe you are correct, Jesse." The other replies.

"Didn't we see the Marshal of this town go in there not a few minutes ago?" The first soldier says.

"Indeed we did, Jesse, indeed we did." The second nods.

"Well, then. Reckon things are well in hand there." The first soldier yawns, and then, as a unit, they spin and walk in the opposite way.

"Did you hear the Limy say something?"

"I do believe I have been struck deaf, Jesse."

"Terrible shame."

"Indeed it is, indeed it is." The two soldiers vanish around a corner, leaving Maddox alone in the street.

Han ran to the bleeding civilian near the two James. He bent down and tried to staunch the civilian's wounds.

However, he is unable to adequately stem the bleeding.

Cursing he tries to move over to the other dying civilian and hopefully save someone on this wretched evening.

Moving to the civilian on the left that is dying. 21:23, Today: Doctor Han Lee rolled 3,1 using 1d4,1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 3,1. Mundane healing, not sure of the wnd pen.

Using my other action from Quickness to move to the other bleeding civvie. Let me know if I have enough movement to do both things.

Re: Chapter 5.1:  Deadwood Smoldering ((Deadwood PCs))

some mood music

Logan's shots perforate one of the dead soldiers, sending it vanishing into mist. But one of his guns begins squealing and hissing. It doesn't explode, but it looks out of alignment.
"You there! HALT!" One of the soldiers shouts, and they all start running down the corridor.
"I'll get her!" Jackie says, turning and charging up the stairs. She leaps, attempting to down the huckster with some sort of flying tackle.
The two dead soldiers watch the scene.

"Retreat." One of them says in an eerie monotone.

"Acquire the target later." Says the other, in a similar monotone.

The two dead soldiers then vanish in a puff of greasy black smoke.

((OOC: Logan, because your pistols are Infernal devices, they suffer a malfunction on a roll of 1 on the Skill die, regardless of the Wild Die (It's usually a good idea to spend a chip for a reroll on a die roll that gets a 1 when using Infernal Devices). Your left-hand gun has suffered a Malfunction. I roll to see how bad it gets:

Re: Chapter 5.1:  Deadwood Smoldering ((Deadwood PCs))

some mood music

The shotglass falls from the air, and rolls along the floor.

The doors to the kitchen burst open, and in dances a dark-haired woman in a tattered white dress.

"Wanderers in that happy valley, Through two luminous windows, saw," she sings, skipping around an empty space. "Spirits moving musically, to a lute's well-tuned law!"

She leans over and blows a kiss to nothing at all.  She looks out over the room.

She nods absently as she looks around the bar. Her eyes lock on Zek. She grins. The light of madness shines in her eyes. "Cousin dear! You're having a party and you started without me! You even brought the lone feather with you! But I don't see the man in brown, the bald one, or the bloody coal train." she shakes her finger at him. "tsk, tsk. And I even brought some friends!"

She gestures, and suddenly a great wind whips through the bar. A dusty whirlwind with a monstrous demonic skull bursts into existence. "Carrion walker!" it shrieks, slamming into Zek with the force of a hurricane. "Murderer! You should have remained in your grave, for now I will feast on your tainted blood!"

Then it reverses course, and slams into Black Jack, the terrible wind threatening to smash him flat. "Dark creeper! Voodoo child! I smell the swamp on you! I will drink the swamp out of you, until you crumble away to dust!"

As the wind whips up to gale force, the beams of the Woolly Buffalo creak, barely abele to contain the force.

"Blow, winds, and crack your cheeks!" The crazed woman laughs, shouting to be heard over the wind. "Rage! Blow!"

((OOC: Nic Whateley spends his action monologing, though he drops the shot glass so Zek can't find him as easily, and he moves back toward the back room door. I played the Reinforcements card, so his reinforcements enter the scene at this point.

"I's didn't do nothin' I sweaaaaaaaaaaaars!" Becky wails as the soldiers drive her to the ground. "Don't shoot meeeeeeeeeeeeee!" she begins bawling...she is well and truly caught.

((OOC: Janet, that's 2 wounds and a shaken you need to soak. If you don't soak all the damage, you'll temporarily have the Lame Hindrance (-2 to pace, running die is a d4).

The Veteran Soldiers attempt to dog-pile Janet and Becky. That's two on you and two on her. These are Grapple checks, with a +1 Gang Up bonus.

09:58, Today: Union Troops rolled 7,8 using d8+1,d8+1, rerolling max with rolls of 6,7. Tackle!

Janet, those are the numbers to beat with your next Fighting rolls

Meanwhile, Becky completely fails her grapple checks, and both the soldiers have raises on her. She is Restrained and Shaken and pretty frightened out of her mind.

Soldiers: JD

On Becky's turn, she Unshakes, but she has no desire to piss off the soldiers by resisting. She instead spends her turn crying.

Card: KH. Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?))

Janet needs to Soak 2 wounds, then needs to resolve 2 Grapples (vs 7 and 8) before I can move on to Jackie Well's turn. Remember to take any wound penalties you wind up with into account.

The crazed woman in white watches the windstorm, giggling.

"'Will you walk into my parlour?' said the Spider to the Fly," she babbles as she waits to see what's become of Zek and Black Jack. "''Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy. The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, and I've a many curious things to shew when you are there.'"

((OOC: So both Zek and Black Jack pass the Vigor check, but fail the Strength check. They are knocked prone (2 points of Pace to stand). While in the windstorm they are Blinded (-4 to most actions). On the Shiwana's action you both will need to make a second Vigor check to avoid being shaken by the wind.

Dolores Whateley decides to keep her Joker to interrupt the action of anyone who comes out of the cloud or who attacks either her or Nic. Since the Shiwana goes on her turn, it is waiting, as well.))

Black Jack, it's your turn. Keep in mind that Dolores has a Joker, and can interrupt any action you take automatically if she wants to.

Jack stood up and once clear of the blinding effects made a break for it. He had put a shot right into his target and seen it fall to the floor. No the odds had shifted and he was fighting a fight that probably could not be won for reasons he did not understand. Truth was Deadwood was proving the wrong place at the wrong time, he had come here to help out some Injuns and had found nothing but trouble. Worse yet he had not made any progress toward his original goal, lost a friend and made a pile of new enemies. So right now getting clear of this mess sounded right. Maddox looks up at the sudden windstorm, and the babbling loony-girl.

"Shit." He says under his breath. "Shitshitshitshitshit and a double shit on Tuesday."

He moves through the bar, keeping low, until he's over near Lonefeather and Wilder again. "We're in trouble, we are."

"Really." Lonefeather reaches into his jacket, pulls a gatiling pistol drum clip, and begins working the spent one out. "Hadn't noticed. Thought it was a gentle breeze."

"Windstorm isn't the problem, it's not." Maddox says, and points to the giggling mad girl. "She is. Because wherever she is, her sodding husband is, too. I can't see him, but I'll bet you a tenner he's the one what hired those bandits that jumped us. And he's a bad customer. Her name's Dolores, and his is Nicodemus. They're a pair of...I don't know, magicians. Illusionists. You know."

Lonfeather eyes the screaming, skull-faced windstorm tearing up the bar. "That is one hell of an illusion." He pulls the spent drum clip free and begins locking in the fresh one. "So these are friends of yours, I take it?"

Maddox shakes his head. "Distant relations. I'll explain later. But if you want to end this thing, see you, you'll need to find Nicodemus. He's the ringleader. Has some pretty weird tricks. Mesmerism and such. He can hypnotize you if he looks in your eyes long enough, and somehow he's able to rig wires to lift things from a distance. Did a vanishing trick that I still can't explain."

Lonefeather just...stares at Maddox. "Wow. That is some serious denial, right there. Still, good to know." He frowns as he locks the drum clip into place. "Dolores and Nicodemus...their last name wouldn't happen to be Whateley, would it?"

"Why, yes." Maddox says, clearly bemused. "How did you..."

"Wilder and I faced them before." Lonefeather says. He looks at Wilder. "Remember? The cult leader in Derry's Ford? The one we wound up burying under a ton of snow?"

Re: Chapter 5.1:  Deadwood Smoldering ((Deadwood PCs))

Several things happen all at once.

Zek breaks from the dark, swirling storm...and runs right into a second howling, ferocious wind. He spots the mad girl for just an instant, squeaking in terror and clutching something he can't see properly...then the wind hits, sending bottles, glasses, and plates of food whirling around him, blocking his view. Still, it was enough. He could guess where the wizard was.

He charged through the wind, and down into the ground...

The wind demon shrieked as Black Jack's conjured wind kicked at it, discorporating it for a moment. "Death! Murder! You will suffer for this outrage!" it shrieks.

"Right." Nat says. "I've done roped everything on two, four, and no feet. I reckon that if you can get some mojo on my lariet," He holds up a coil of rope, "I can hold it in place long enough for your spirit friends to take it apart."

Just then, the screaming windstorm blows over the bar, and Black Jack finds himself blasted by hot, searing winds, winds that seem to be sucking all the moisture from the air around him, turning him dangerously dry...
"Almost certainly." Maddox growls as the dual windstorm swallows The mad girl, obscuring her from view. "And I think I know who by yir she's workin' with. I should have seen it before, I should. No wonder that bastard Sebastian and his girlfriend Janet thought I'd be needin' his help. He must be relations to Dolores there, and thus thought that because we're distant kin I'd be leaping in on his schemes and plannings."

"Great. More Whateleys. Just what we need." Lonefeather grumbles. "I'm beginning to wish we'd stayed in Laramie." He points to the windstorm. "So how the hell do we deal with that?"
((OOC: Alrighty, so we have a lot of overlapping actions. I roll Agility for Ezekiel and Black Jack to see which order the actions happen in, and i get a tie, which means they happen simultaneously.

This means that Zek is caught in the Windstorm. Since he's insubstantial, this doesn't do anything more than Blind him, though it's a spiritually-powered wind which means that, were he to stay in it, he'd have to make checks to avoid being Shaken.

Dolores uses her Joker to try and interrupt Zek's movement with her confusion power, but the sudden windstorm forces her to attempt a Vigor roll to avoid being Shaken. If she succeeds, she's suddenly at a -4 penalty to hit anything (-4 blinded, -2 windstorm, +2 Joker). If she fails, she loses the spell and spends her action attempting to Unshake

17:50, Today: Dolores Whateley rolled 3,3 using d6,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 3,3. Vigor. Fail. She's shaken and must Unshake.

17:51, Today: Dolores Whateley rolled 4,1 using d10,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 4,1. Unshake. She succeeds, but wouldn't be able to hit anything with that -6 penalty.

Meanwhile, Zek managed to Run without interruption. He passes through Nic's space on his way and, as we discussed in private, catches a glimpse of the Huckster.

The Shiwana gets to go now. It takes 3d6 damage from the whipping wind.

damage: 16. This is 2 wounds for the Shiwana. It attempts to Soak.

17:53, Today: Shiwana rolled 14 using 1d6, rerolling max with rolls of (6+6+2)14. Soak! Success and 2 raises, which is enough to soak the damage.

It is rather riled at Black Jack, so it charges at him to keep him in its windstorm area and get OUT of the area created by Jack.

It also attempts to suck the moisture out of Jack.

18:01, Today: Shiwana rolled 2 using 1d10, rerolling max with rolls of 2. Drought! Chip time.
18:01, Today: Shiwana rolled 9 using 1d10, rerolling max with rolls of 9. white chip. Better.

Jack, I need you to make me a Vigor check (vs. 9) to avoid taking levels of Fatigue, one for each Success and Raise it gets over you.

Action over, I draw a card: 9S

Nic finally gets his turn. He needs to roll Vigor or be shaken thanks to the windstorm. He decides to take his lumps and spends a chip for an auto-success on the Unshake roll, and decides to get the hell out of Dodge. He grabs Dolores and attempts to Teleport with her in tow. This doesn't cost him extra PP, it just gives him a level of Fatigue.

First, he makes his Deal with the Devil for the 3 PP the spell costs. He only needs Jacks or Better for that.

AD, JC, 9S, 10C, KS, 8S, 9C, 9D, 4D, 7S, 2H, KD, 4H, RJ! Full House! He decides to skip the Joker and go with the Full House, which is more than enough mojo to pull this off. The spell goes off with a Raise, meaning he doesn't have to roll for it, and the spouse/siblings move 15 squares Out Thatta Way. They are out of this fight unless the PCs are extremely determined to chase after them.))

James, your attempted action is now Moot. Since it wasn't your turn in the Init order just yet, you get some more exposition and can choose a new action. Han Lee, you have a brand-new angry windstorm heading your way. Your action!

Jackie Wells:
Jackie guffaws. "That's rich, Elmira. You wanna pull the other one? It's got bells on." She looks over at Logan. "Well...she's done caught again. What now?"

Leopold keeps his pistol in his right, as he fumbles with his cigarette case, finally lighting one of them.
He blows a cloud of smoke out of his nose and says in his atrocious accent: "In the Silesian mines, if a worker tries to run away with some gold he digs up, we break their ankles. They can still work, but not run so good afterwards."

He chuckles.

Re: Chapter 5.1:  Deadwood Smoldering ((Deadwood PCs))

"I usually wouldn't sanction it, but it might be a good idea in this one's case," he replied dryly to Leo.

Speaking to Janet, he took a stern tone. "Ma'am, I'm a United States Marshal, and I wanted to speak to you in conjunction with an ongoing investigation. Rest assured that none of us will try and kill you while you are in my custody, unless you are brought before a lawfully ordained court and sentenced in accordance with the laws of the United States. Given that you fled my pursuit, however, I cannot but assume some guilt on your part. Should you attempt flight again, there will be little doubt of that, and I will no longer be able to vouchsafe you my protection. Have I made myself clear?"

Janet tried to struggle upright.  "I don't see a badge.  And if Miss Wells there would be kind enough to fetch my bag, there's papers in there that'll prove my position."

She turned to look Logan in the eye.  "My orders were to avoid contact with officials at all costs.  The only reason I'm coming out now is because she blew my cover sky high.  I don't always like my orders, but I follow them as best I can.  You don't like that, you can send a complaint to my superiors in Washington.  But for now, the best I can do is try and help you out of this mess.  What the hell is going on?"

In reply to Doctor Han Lee (msg # 255):

Han Lee's bullets sink into the flailing, screaming wind demon--with no apparent effect. Bullock, at his side, fires as well. His bullets have just as little an effect.

This monster was going to need something more than just lead to put down. Something charged with ki should do the trick.

((OOC: I have Bullock go at the same time as Han Lee, just to make things easier on me. This is simple, as mundane bullets don't do a thing to the Shiwana.))

James Wilder:
"Jimmy, might have to withdrawal from this slice of crazy so that we might gather munitions."

OOC: Is it obvious WHO is controlling/started the windstorm?

"I'd love to see the munitions that could deal with that." Lonefeather mutters. "Maybe if we had some of those Ghostfire bullets Smith & Robards sell...but I don't think we can really hurt it."

"I have some." Maddox says. "Not with me by yir, more's the pity, but I have some at my flat. They're bloody expensive, so I only have about a dozen in some speed-load cylinders. It's not far--I meet clients here because it's close."

((OOC: The dueling windstorms have obscured the back of the bar with flying debris and dust. You can't see past them. She's teleported out anyway, so you couldn't see her even if you wanted to.))

He wrinkled his nose.

As the soldiers started speaking to them, he turned to them and did his best to turn his charm on. As a United States Marshal, he'd have the jurisdiction to work wherever he pleased, but being that the military was running the show here, it would be best to be polite. "I'm United States Marshal Logan West, and I'm pursuing an ongoing investigation in Deadwood. I've spoken to Lieutenant Haverford, and I have in my possession papers that say I'm to be extended every courtesy while I'm in the performance of my duties," he said.

"If this woman is your prisoner, you might should thank us, because she was on the run and we've prevented her escape," he added congenially with a smile.

He holstered his gun, though he didn't let up with the hand that was restraining Janet. With one hand now free, he retrieved the papers from his coat pocket and handed them to the soldier.

"That's alright, we could use a few extra pairs of eyes and hands. This is a slippery prisoner you've got here. Oh, and this here with me is the Major Leopold, Freiherr  von Steinhof from the Great Empire of Austria and the Kindgom of Hungary, diplomatic attaché to His Imperial and Royal Majesty, the most Apostolic Franz Joseph's embassy to the United States. One of the soldiers nods at Von Steinhof. "Sure did. Mighty fine shot, there." He says as the group heads back down.

The basement of the Grand Hotel is spare, just mud and foundation and some old boxes. There's a cot, a chamber pot, and a lantern.

Two of the soldiers take up guard positions near the stairs. Jackie sits on the stairs themselves, once the rest of the group has passed. She keeps her Gatling pistol drawn, though at rest.

The other two guards flank Janet and escort her forcibly to the cot.

"I need to inform Custer about this." The solider says to Logan. "The soldiers here will keep an eye on our troublesome guest. Ask whatever questions you need to, then get going."

"Don't forget her precious bag." Jackie calls to him as he leaves. "Reckon it's got her papers, a can o' Dr. Pepper, and half a kilo o' chocolate bonbons too." She gives Janet a lopsided, feral grin.

The soldier just snorts and continues up the stair.
