Re: Any requests?

I like your Captain America quote. And I'll meet it with Metrophage:

Conover:
The Committee is a fact of life. What we do, you and I, all the dealers and smugglers, is poetry. Haiku. A form defined by its restrictions. The sooner you learn to work within those restrictions, the happier you'll be.

Knowledge speaks, but wisdom listens.

He who knows others is wise. He who knows himself is enlightened.
-- Lao Tzu

All womanhood is hampered today because the world on which it is emerging is a world that tries to worship both virgins and mothers and in the end despises motherhood and despoils virgins.
-- W. E. B. Du Bois

Why is it men are permitted to be obsessed about their work, but women are only permitted to be obsessed about men?
-- Barbra Streisand

You know, men and women are a lot alike in certain situations. Like when they're both on fire - they're exactly alike.

Re: Any requests?

If there isn't anything on it already (yes, I'm too lazy to look), could I request a game-thread?

Rules:

One person presents a topic (can be anything; cars, missionaries, extraplanar communication, what-have-you)

At that point three different presentations can be made; an Ethos argument, a Pathos Argument, and a Logos argument.

Once an argument is made, it can't be made again for the same topic, and once all three arguments have been made, the round ends.

So this is sort of an... argument practice?

Re: Any requests?

Precisely; exercising all three forms of argument, I feel, would be beneficial for increasing writing skills, and provide a few "homegrown" examples of what Pathos, Logos, and Ethos are in the context of arguments.

I'll admit, I would find this useful.  I've never been introduced to this categorization of arguments before now.

Re: Any requests?

Why not something simple like The Holy Bible I for one think we should talk about the book on several levels. The simplest for me the biggest is it a good treatise on moral teachings for humans to follow? What kind of God does it show is being worshipped? etc.

Re: Any requests?

I think we have a lot of threads on the bible. I'd tend to shy away from a general 'bible discuss' thread (actually, we might already have one of those...)

Would you like to discuss the bible as a moral authority specifically? I don't think we have one on that, but I can check!

Re: Any requests?

Yes it seems to me a rather odd book to use for that, we could toss in the Koran and some others but most people know enough of the Torah and Holy Bible to talk about it.

Re: Any requests?

I'd be interested in a thread about historical evidence of religious figures. Sure the question of 'was Jesus a historical person' gets debated a lot, but few people ask if say Buddah was a historical person. There are lots of other figures in legend and mythology (King arthur, the Jade Emperor, etc.) that could be considered questionable...

I'd like to request a new computer, please.  Just mail it to me and I'll happily sign off that I received it (just don't send it COD). :p

Falkus:
Transhumansism and the posthuman condition might make for an interesting discussion, especially as to how various religions view the concepts.
