Heaven And Hell

Katisara:
There's the bible story of the poor man named Lazarus (iirc) and a rich man.  They both die, Lazarus goes up to heaven with Moses, the rich man doesn't, and they say the gap between the two is uncrossable.  How do you explain this verse?

Obviously, I would have the stance that if one is in heaven, and another is in hell, then it would make sense in a final judgment, changing your mind is too late. It's final for all eternity after all.

Re: Heaven And Hell

A slight tangent here (feel free to ignore it until the initial question has been discussed, if you like), but I've always thought that infinite punishment for a finite crime is unjust.  Hell is supposed to be the worst possible torture ever.  One second worse than a lifetime of the worst punishment you can think of on earth.  And it last for all time.  Is there any crime so heinous that deserves such a punishment?  If any earthly government tried to introduce one second stays in hell as punishment, they'd be accused of human rights violations.  Why would a "loving" and "just" god ever subject anyone to such a thing?
