Re: new tangent

Heath:
Many people are too new to this site to have participated in any of those old discussions, which were often Rogue and myself going back and forth.

Yeah, would agree with you on that, though I think that's sort of the answer to your question:  Back then most of the discussion was between you and Rogue, but now Rogue is gone, and you're not able to spend as much time here.  Change the players, and you'll change the play. :)  The discussion is different because the discussors are different.

Heath:
You have to admit that the tone of the place has changed over the last 2-3 years.

Indeed.  Though, I'd say that's probably to be expected in a media like this one.

Yes, if they hold out too much longer from converting to Turnerology, who knows what Captain Planet might do to them next?

Re: new tangent

FYI, please don't take it as a snub if I don't respond to some issues for a long time, if at all.

My life is so hectically busy these days that for this site I tend to put a statement out there and let it stand on its own unless I get time to respond to any questions or arguments that follow it.

I have previously stated that if you have something you really want me to respond to, please send me a quick private message, and I will try to get to it.

Re: new tangent

I'm sure everyone has seen CC has closed down any discussions of a 'political nature'. So as a consequence, we'll probably be seeing a lot more members around here. In fact, we just got two more today!

Welcome aboard spoonk and C-h.

Yeah, about that, was there a particular incident that prompted that?  I saw evilkate's departure.  Was it a gender argument?  I hadn't been on CC for a bit and I didn't want to ask on CC because I didn't want feel the wrath of the mighty Mods.

EDIT: Just read BBR's reply on CC.  Understood now.

Re: new tangent

New Scientist had an interesting article about 'Choosing my Religion'. It's extremely brief, but has some stuff I didn't know and some thought-provoking notes:

Re: new tangent

The only thought it provoked as that this is a rather smarmy way of promoting the author's own ideas on a "perfect" religion.  "Utopianity"?  Really?  It is basically her politics converted into religion.  Always a good idea.

No wonder I abandoned New Scientist long ago.  What crap.

Re: new tangent

The religion comes in four flavors part is an interesting idea.  I imagine it requires really simplifying and editing out some parts of religion to be that broad, but thats what labeling is for anyway.

For those who are not keeping up with the Nuke plant. Number 2 is now in full melt down as the containment vessel has breached.  It also has been upgraded to level 6 officially.  But other professionals say this is worse then Chernobyl.

In reply to spoonk (msg #941):

Keeping up with it.  Just moved some of my Japanese relatives into a house I rented for them.  You would be amazed at how surprisingly upbeat they are.  They see this as a minor setback and I would have to agree with them.  Disasters happen and when a people decide that they will not be crippled by loss and fear they have already won the fight to rebuild.

Whenever I see mass hysteria and panic in the media I re-read this speech given by Michael Crichton.

http://www.nowandfutures.com/d...nuclear_Crichton.htm

The reactors are still a major concern and need to be dealt with.  I have hopes that they will be dealt with properly and that no one loses life to the efforts.  I still have family who remained behind to begin rebuilding.

Re: new tangent

*shrugs*  I don't keep up with main stream media so I have no idea what they really cover.  From what I hear from my family though is that there is no coverage of it any more.  Other then "every thing is fine" statement.  I am not sure how serious the plant is but if it is on the level of Chernobyl, basically most of northern japan will be inhabitable.

Here are the ones I use:

http://www.japantoday.com/
http://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/
http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/dy/
http://home.kyodo.co.jp/

Kyodo has been sporadic today.

I am mostly talking about the Chicken Little talking heads of MSNBC, ABC, CBS, Fox, and CNN.

And actually, Chernobyl was not that bad as Crichton explains far better than I.  It still has an exclusion zone of 30 kilometers but is also the work place of thousands of workers as well as being a thriving wildlife park.  Hey!  Want a tour?

http://tourkiev.com/chernobyltour/

I am not too worried about "most of northern japan being (un)inhabitable".

Re: new tangent

http://www.amazingdiscoveries.tv/

If you want weeks of religious info, this is a good site.  Most of the presentations are done by Professor Vieth.  He used to be Catholic and a Professor who taught Evolution.  The site has a number of interesting topics.  The Total Onslaught is a long one but well worth it.  I highly recommend doing that series in order but if you want one to get started.

211 - The Secret Behind Secret Societies

Has some interesting stuff as well.  Mainly because of the contravention behind it, he sticks to quoting famous historians and other public figures.  I should warn you though that most videos are about 1.5 to 2 hours long.

Then another note of interest is the science section.

Re: new tangent

Really? Most of this seems to be the old pseudo-science videos my church groups showed me when I was growing up with fake credentials "Used to teach evolution science" really? Where? Because most schools have teachers in biology whose classes touch on evolution, not an 'evolution science' class. It's hyperbole and pseudo science same as what the flat earth society puts out.

Re: new tangent

This is an OOC and I'm not trying to get into a debate here.  If you have already came to the conclusion that he doesn't know what he is talking about from one video.  I'm not going to tell you to watch them all.

"Professor Walter Veith obtained his doctorate in zoology from the University of Cape Town in 1979. He believes that the theory of evolution does not provide a plausible explanation of our origins, and that the geological and paleontological data do not support evolution over long periods of time, but rather imply catastrophism, which is consistent with the Genesis account."

"Professor Veith's research field is nutritional physiology, concentrating on the effect of modern animal husbandry on the incidence of disease transferal to humans."

"Professor Veith is one of only five scientists in South Africa honored with the Royal Society London Grant for the Reconstruction and Development Program to establish a research climate in post-apartheid South Africa. "

Re: new tangent

What I find interesting is that if you go to either the Royal Society website or the UCT website and do a search for Veith it comes up with nothing. If you do a general web search for either of tehse in conjunction with Veith it will only come up with his self-promotional web sites and web sites discussing his self promotion.
It's not like trumped up credentials are a new thing either: http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/credentials.html

Hey all.  Sorry I've been silent the last week or so.  Was out of town, and had expected to be able to check in, but didn't get to.  Am going to start plowing through all the posts now.  If there's anything you've been expecting me to reply to, it's probably a good idea to send me a PM and let me know, as otherwise I may miss it if there's been quite a few posts.

Re: new tangent

Hola, everyone.  I've been playing roleplaying games for fifteen years, starting with MUDs, moving on to MERP and AD&D 2nd, and then branching out into other systems.  I came here because I wanted to get you guys' take on D&D and roleplaying games in general and whether there's any truth to the stories floating around the web about occult ties to the game.  I'll ask the powers that be to bump or create a new thread to talk about it.
