Re: Episode 1: Gateway

"...unless they exist as such in this world already. So, basically, unless we actually make at least two copies of a certain set of items and leave them here, they will be a unique object and we will not be able to Wish for them. Which means we need to ask for Pale's help." The way Zhorr understood it, at least, if a certain item wasn't largely available, wishing for it would not work once on the other side, unless one of them had two copies of it on this side.

However, keeping hold of this kind of possession, even as an ideal rather than a physical object, would limit their ability to carry magic tattoos, and since the only one of them without a tattoo was Pale, that meant that he was the best candidate to implement the Baron's idea.

Re: Episode 1: Gateway

It didn't take long after that, at least from the perspective of those observing from outside Sider's demiplane.

Pale and Tilly both decided that they would give up their share of allowable possessions for the benefit of the group, and two kits were prepared, each in two copies, so that they could easily be wished for once on the other side.

Using his divinely granted powers, Zhorr prepared a place for the group to rest and sleep until the following morning.

After a night of good sleep, Zhorr called everybody on the mountaintop again.

"My Lady, we are ready." He said to no one in particular.

A moment later, a ray of pale light descended upon him, and his voice changed to a soprano pitch.

"Come forward, then, travelers. It is time for you to get ready for your journey."

One by one, each member of the group approached Zhorr (and the goddess who was possessing him at the moment). He touched each of them on the head, and a warm tingling went through their bodies.

"It was agreed that you would only feel the full effect when you go through the portal, but you should feel healthier already."

She had a few words with each of the travelers. [GM: Perception check DC 13 to hear.]

Sider, he complimented for his devotion ("I shall like to speak with you some more, once you come back.").

Dekar, she thanked for his service ("...even if you're not one of mine.") - and she winked meaningfully at Lareth.

To Mirelinda, she wished that she would enjoy her journey as much as she always had ("And if you should find opportunity for a little mischief... Go ahead and take it with my blessing.", she winked at the sorceress).

To Pale, he wished luck in his search ("I hope you will be pleased, perhaps even surprised.").

She pursed her lips when Tilly approached and whispered to her in a lower voice than to the others [GM: the DC for this one is 18.]. "You should take better care of yourself, my dear: some of us reserve a special spot for you in their hearts, and would be very disappointed to see you depart this plane before your time."

After that, the light disappeared. Zhorr's cleared his throat and continued in his normal voice.

"Well, that's it for now. Your bodies will be recreated on arrival by the portal magic, and they will be rejuvenated in the process. Those of us who prepare their spells may want to do so now."

Time moved quickly after that.

When the portal finally began to open, it was not subtle. The monolith at the center of the mountaintop began to glow with a strong blue light.

Zhorr looked at his fellow travelers and said simply: "Well, this is it. In a few minutes the portal will be open. Do you have any preferences about the order in which you will follow? I will remind you that takes over an hour for the portal to recharge after sending somebody through."

"That is a noble offer and of course I expected nothing less from you, lord Dekar, however there are reasons that make it necessary for me to go first, and there will be no threat for the first few days, aside from the cold. Which reminds me... May the blessing of the Lady protect us on this journey." A strange feeling descended upon the members of the group.

Tilly's wrinkled face split into a wan smile at the Lady's remark.  "I'm as tough as nails, " she ventured, her sunken eyes momentarily focusing, like an octogenarian general, who salutes the new commander, seeing not the man before him but a day long ago .  "Someone needs to watch these kids."

With unwavering pluck, she volunteers to be the second through.

As for gear, she would suggest Annihilation Spectacles, for their incredible usefulness to any transmuter wizard.  (OOC: We still have a wizard, right?)

Finishing his book that he was reading on the hammock, Baron Sider reaches for his pipe and flicks his finger to light it. Taking a few puffs a cloud of smoke erupts from it and floats to the top of the demiplane.

"Now that we are finished here, let us return to the world and continue our journey" he says to Mirelinda and the others.

"Helmut, please remind me that I need to get another case of Bushmill's the next time I am at the Bazaar in Deva. Yes, I know that you do not like the stuff but its for me, not you. Yes, I know its a vice but at my age, it is one of the few things that I still enjoy. At least I stopped drinking that junk from Nueva Rio when I was younger." he says to the flying helmet fluttering next to him. With a final puff of the pipe, he puts it back in the hut and closes the door. Holding his hands out to the others so that can join him back on the world, the dimensions fold and they have returned.

Having returned, the Baron listens to Zhorr as he addresses everyone.

He stretches his head forward to hear the whisper "I am sure that I will have much to talk to you when we return." he replies to the voice.

"Well, I have my spells prepared for the travel and have many ready to start a shelter when we get to the new realm.  As for the kits, The Annihilation Spectacles will not be as useful for me as I am a Universalist wizard and it will not do me any good. However, might I suggest that they each have 2 or 3 All tools vests. Three would be better so that we will have half a dozen vests for crafting things.  Rather than having to create tools for our crafts when we get there, we will have what we need and can use them to create more specific masterwork tools that we need later." he suggested. "Also I would suggest a Cauldron of Brewing and Plenty in each kit. It will help provide food until we get set up for long term food production and the Brewing one will help with crafting alchemical items. If we have food covered, then a lyre of building might be a good idea for manpower. Also a few Tree Feather Token's would provide us a source of wood for projects. Having them stored in a Handy Haversack would also be useful as it will hold the items and provide a safe means of storage for other items."

Re: Episode 1: Gateway

Zhorr's darkvision adapted instantaneously to the total lack of light he was in. Taking a step forward, he raised his arms, and willed light to spring into existence.

Nothing happened.

Zhorr sighed: he missed his godlike powers already.

Well, no point in moping, he had work to do.

He took another step forward, then another, and kept going until he counted fifty steps. Then he used an entirely different kind of godlike power.

[1] A few seconds later, he was holding a shining steel dagger in his hands. One spell down, only a dozen or two to go.

[2] A quick gesture of his hand, a muttered word, and the dagger was shining brightly, casting about a warm yellow light. Well, a warm-looking yellow light, at least: he was pretty sure that, without an active Endure Elements spell, he would have been well and truly frozen by now.

Time to remedy the lack of clothes, for himself and his companions.

[3] He swiped the edge of one hand across the other in a cutting motion, and suddenly his blood was flowing - and shaping into a large pile of cloth, ready to be used by a second spell.

The final result was a large square of interconnected shapes on the ground that looked like a bizarre form of art, a weird sculpture made of items of clothing sewn together.

[4] He nodded approvingly, and muttered one more incantation, then handed the dagger to... Empty air, apparently.

The empty air took the dagger and stood waiting.

Zhorr went over to the patch of clothes, and started to explain where and how to cut it, and what to do with the pieces once they had been separated from the whole. It was a really simple - one could even say mindless - task, and Zhorr put it out of his mind once he had explained it.

[5] Now, for a place to sleep... A simple shelter ought to suffice for the next 24 to 48 hours, until one of his companions found a better solution. He began to walk around, chanting and gesturing, and kept at it for several minutes. As he did so, the ground began to reshape, raising up to form a simple but sturdy building, seemingly made of dirt (or possibly mud), yet as solid as rock.

By the time he was done, the strange mosaic of clothes on the ground had been separated and neatly divided into a number of piles.

[6] The magus muttered a simple incantation - one that he had used countless times to entertain children and pretty girls alike. A moment later, with a flourish of his hand, he magically created a magic wand out of thin air.

Well, not really: the item itself was a crude stick made of conjured wood that probably wasn't worth the air it had been conjured from, and which was going to disappear in an hour anyway, but one quick incantation later it had effectively been turned into a torch, which he then handed to his Unseen Servant, so that it could return the dagger (which was currently "moonlighting", so to speak, as its torch) back to him.

Zhorr retrieved the dagger from the invisible being, and collected a pile of clothes; he then instructed his Unseen Servant to carry all the remaining piles the newly made shelter, and dressed up quickly using the clothes he had selected.

Nodding approvingly, if a bit immodestly, at the craftsmanship of his new clothes, he set the dagger into one of the loops in his belt - trying to make scabbards out of soft cloth seemed like a futile pursuit, and he didn't feel like experimenting under the current conditions anyway.

[7] Another swipe of his hand and again his blood was flowing, shaping into a big lump of glossy green metal. He thought briefly that it was a good thing the spell automatically closed the wound when it was done... The following days were going to be bloody.

This time, Zhorr's magic turned his hard-earned materials into a strange tree-like sculpture: a thin rod of greenish steel, not entirely unlike the trunk of a tiny tree in its function, supported by four equally thin legs, with six even thinner branches.

Two of the branches were bending under the weight of the items that hung from them, held by an almost invisible thread of greenish steel that looked like it was just about ready to snap under the strain.

One of said big items was a beautifully crafted scimitar, and the other was a delicate, finely ornate jug. The remaining four branches carried what looked like four simple, small rods of greenish steel, tapered at both ends.

Zhorr carefully used his dagger to cut the thin thread holding his brand-new masterwork scimitar, and regarded it approvingly, before setting it in one of the loops in his belt - he would really have to fix that with an actual scabbard, eventually, but for now it would do.

With the same care, he removed the jug and the four fountain pens - what a nice invention, fountain pens, truly a divinely inspired item - and put the pens in one of his many, many pockets, before setting the jar on the floor.

[8] One last swipe of his hand, and again his blood was flowing. A large roll of paper materialized under his hand, and was immediately collected by the reshaping magic. A few seconds later, a stack of twenty-eight books, with robust off-white hard covers, was sitting next to him.

Gently, he began cutting the thin layer of paper holding their spines together: a few minutes later, he had separated the stack into actual books. He instructed his Unseen Servant to move them inside the house, stacking them carefully next to the table, and went to collect the jug.

He had designed it with particular care, so that the long beak would easily fit in the back of the fountain pens: this was particularly important, considering how expensive the ink with which he was about to fill it was.

This spell had been cast days earlier, in another universe, but its effects had been put on hold, waiting for a very specific event. Just for heck of it, and partly because he knew he was going to miss the ability to actually make those words work, he had set the completion trigger to a sentence that he could no longer pronounce with an actual effect.

He opened the lid of the jug, pointed at the opening, and intoned: "I wish for a jug of magical ink!"

The spell finally came to fruition, completing the crafting process that combined several different - and impressively expensive - dyes into the special ink Wizards and Magi needed to write in their spellbooks.

The jug was two-thirds filled by the time the spell completed, which was as expected: he had made sure to make it larger than needed so that no ink would be wasted.

This item, he brought inside the shelter himself: he wasn't sure he trusted his Unseen Servant with what basically amounted to two-thirds of his current resources.

He filled all four fountain pens, gauging that the jug now only contained about three-fifths of the initial ink, then set the jug on the writing desk, where the ink quickly began to freeze. This wasn't a big problem - the jug was elastic enough to accommodate its expansion - but it was going to require some coaxing with prestidigitation to make the ink flow again.

[9] Zhorr touched the table inside the shelter, whispering a short incantation, and the stout piece of furniture began to shine, while the crude stick still held by his Unseen Servant faded.

[10] A careful gesture of his hand, and the off-white cover acquired a slight shade of blue; with a little know-how and patience, and possibly a few more cantrips, the dust would permanently bond with the cover but, for now, the important thing was that he could identifying the book unequivocally.

A few arcane words later, an ornate golden rune - The Mark of Zhorr, as it were - occupied the front cover of his new spellbook.

[11] The magus sat down and spent some time writing one of the spells he had prepared for the day into his spellbook - a special, expensive one that was going to come in very handy in the following days.

About an hour later, he closed his spellbook, collected a pile of clothes and a blank spellbook (just in case), and went back to where he had materialized initially: soon, it would be time to greet the next traveller.

Re: Episode 1: Gateway

It was an interesting effect, Zhorr thought as the air began to shimmer. His own departure and arrival had been, subjectively speaking, quite abrupt, so he had figured that one of his companions would simply appear out of thin air, perhaps with a flash of light.

That was not the case.

The naked, translucent image of a handsome young male had slowly begun to appear before Zhorr's eyes, becoming more and more solid with each moment passing, but the whole process actually took several seconds.

Next to him, a pretty humanoid female of undefinable age, her hand clasped in the man's own, was going through the same process.

Eventually, Dekar and Lareth finally appeared to have completed their crossing of the threshold between universes.

"Hello there!" Greeted Zhorr. "Please accept this small token, as a sign of welcome to this brave new world..." With a smile, Zhorr offered the clothes he had prepared for his companion.

He pointed behind him: "The light you see over there comes from our new home - for the next couple of days, at least. I think Sider has plans for a more permanent residence."

He smiled apologetically at Lareth: "Sorry Lee, but I don't have another set of clothes with me... I sort of expected you to cross in a form that wouldn't need them."

The girl simply shrugged, apparently unconcerned with human propriety or modesty. "If I know you, and I do, there's a pile of clothes in the house, enough for all of us thrice over. I'll just have to get some for myself."

Zhorr nodded, still smiling: "Why don't we go get some clothes for you then?"

[12] Waiting for more of his companions to appear, Zhorr took some time to write down another very special and very useful spell, and one less special but altogether essential one.

Over an hour went by as he carefully inscribed his magical knowledge in the tome.

[13] That task completed, and with still some time left to kill, Zhorr picked up one of the sacks, and once again inscribed his personal rune on it. He then set out to cast the series of spells that he knew he was going to cast over and over and over in the following days.

[14] One incantation later, the magus suddenly grew more than twice as tall, and much more muscular, and his features changed significantly - and not for the better. Another quick incantation, and his muscles doubled in size once again. Now he was ready for the last few spells of the day.

Once more he swiped the edge of one hand across the one of the other, and his blood reshaped into a large, rough diamond. One spell later, the diamond had been crushed into fine dust, which was neatly collected by the sack... And Zhorr was so tired he was staggering under the weight of his clothes.

That was what the next spell was for: a pinch of diamond dust, a few carefully spoken words, and his strength was back in full.

[15] He repeated the procedure, this time creating a beautiful gem, hard to identify but evidently very expensive, and once again restoring himself to full strength.

[16] Three more spells later, a second beautiful gem was sitting next to the first one. Now it was time for the headband that was going to hold those gems, and the sister ones he would create later.

[17] Two more spells, and there it was: a beautiful headband made of fine adamantine, with six settings for gems that precisely matched the size of the ones Zhorr had just created.

And then it was time for somebody else to arrive...

As yet another evening came, Tilly was sitting in a chair, watching the monolith.  She listened to the sound of the wind in the trees, and the evening's birdsong.  She wondered what would happen if a bird alighted on the strange artifact, but none did.  When the stars rotated up and over the world, she starred at them, asking Mirelinda to tell her what she saw, for TIlly's old eyes had grown foggy and did not pierce the sky as once they did.

Swapping sky-wisdom with Grandmother Mirelinda amused her, and Tilly shared some of her own methods of reading the stars (for clearly a Varisian would have some!).

Baron Sider had agreed to make a kit for her, since she was so tired of late.  It seemed tiredness dogged her from morning to afternoon, gave her a respite for an hour, then dogged her again unto the depths of slumber.  She was more than ready to touch the monolith and cast it aside.  Besides, she missed the energetic Zhorr and his almost naive eagerness for trouble...

She wondered how he was faring... out there.

Re: Episode 1: Gateway

"Come Helmut, it it time to cross over to the other plane and start building a base for us to operate." The Archmage says to the helmet fluttering around him "Wird es größer zu sein als die hütte rufen sie zu hause auf der anderen welt?" it says. "Now now, you know that it was a place for me to relax and get away from things". "und sich betrinken" it says in a dead pan voice. The Baron starts laughing "Careful or I will use you for a codpiece." and laughes even harder as he starts stripping off his clothes. The helmet turns a few shades of pale at that notion. "Besides, when was the last time we had gone out on an adventure?" he asks "Ein sehr langer Zeit" it replies in a soft voice.

As the Archmage takes off this clothes, he mutters a few words of a spell and as he finishes taking his loin cloth off, it appears that an illusion of a large fig leaf is covering his privates (1).  A hoot of laughter erupts from the helmet. "Nach all den Jahren, warum bist du plötzlich so bescheiden? Sie waren der ehrengast bei der Ernte im Herbst Bacchanal im Tempel des Bacchus im letzten Jahr." "Yes, that was a business matter and my liver still hates me for it. However, I am not sure if there is going to be anyone else greeting us on the other side" he mutters. he casts another spell and the goosebumps that he had from taking off the clothes is no longer there as the spell takes effect (2)

Reaching the other side, the Baron sees Zhorr, Dekar and Lareth waiting for him along with some clothes.  "Well, lets get something going like a long term structure with some security and warmth for everyone." He says. "Helmut, if you please, add some light to help the others see." (3)

Spreading his hands out, he starts by changing the surface of the ground into something firmer that will support a structure,(4) using his knowledge of engineering. Once that was completed, with another motion of his hands, walls of stone erupt from the slab and a stone building starts to take form that will later become the tower(5)

Using another spell, entrances and stairs are created in the building.(6)

"There that will have to do for today. Over the next few days, I plan on it becoming a much larger structure of 60' x 60' x 20' high with a tower that rises 80 or so off the ground to start with. The tower is going to be the thickest in order to serve for defense and observation, while the areas around it will be for housing and work shops." he says.

"Why Archmage, I was hoping you would at least come see what Lareth has been doing with our temporary accomodation... But I guess where there's a wizard there's a tower, almost like a law of nature." Smiled Zhorr.

Handing a blank spellbook to the man, Zhorr showed him one of the fountain pens he had made: "I don't know if you are familiar with these... Remarkable devices, really quite useful. Shall I show you our home for the night, until your tower is complete?"

Re: Episode 1: Gateway

[18] While he waited for his next companion, Zhorr took some time to write more spells into his book, and to make one last item that he was going to need - a small, shiny pearl.

Then it was once again time to meet one of his companions.

This time he did not take a spellbook with him, since the only other person who was going to need one was Sider, and he had already been appropriately equipped.

A female shape began to appear, hovering a few inches above the ground; a few moments later Zhorr recognized Tilly... Several decades younger than she had been when he'd last seen her.

He had known, abstractedly, that the motherly woman had been possessed of great beauty in her youth, but the concrete reality of it was quite impressive.

Handing over the clothes he had prepared, he greeted the newly young woman before him: "Savior of the North... I look forward to hearing the true stories behind some of the legends I heard."

Re: Episode 1: Gateway

When the day finally came, TIlly was sitting in her chair, rocking back and forth, musing as Dawn chased away errant stars, and, tucking them into bed, rose with a blushing readiness.

It all gave Tilly a headache.

Being close to death was exhausting.  It took so much energy to go on, that, she almost would have gotten it over with ages ago.  She was so tired of being tired all the time.

So when that dawn came, even though it wasn't time yet and she was all by herself, she stood up to go to the portal.

Halfway there, she fell over, bruised her knee on the earth, and bit her tongue.  This was followed by a stream of curses, some of which she had kept in reserve for decades.  She crawled to her knees, gasping, hair disarrayed, and a hand clenched against her guts.  "Ohhh, crickets!" she exclaimed.

She laughed at that.  She'd picked up the expression from a niece.  Gritting her teeth, she brushed white hairs out of her eyes and stared at the portal, licking her gums over and over like pondering witch.    Finally, she crawled toward it on hands and knees.  When she reached its side, she collapsed with her back against a rock.

Not bad.  From there, she contemplated the sky for the rest of the day.  Pale behind the sky, constellations passed by in a rush, meaningless and unknowable--the hallucinations of death perhaps.  The world seemed large under her, and she, her heels having dug furrows when she sat, she seemed almost part of it.  She and the world, they were one, after all.  She had always known that, from an early age.  Once, she had looked into the eyes of a cat and saw herself reflected.  She and the cat had been one.

She closed her eyes and focused on being part of the earth and stars, and when she had it, it seemed like a warm ocean sweeping her away into the infinite.  The portal glimmered open and took her, and when she went, Tilly carried over her world with her, not the dumb physical world.  Not things.  She carried the earth and the stars in her soul, because they shared a soul.

And that's something.

On the other side, Zhorr saw her before she quite saw him.  She understood his words and, forget physical beauty!  Tilly's laugh in reply, that was beauty!

"Say something else!" she demanded, suddenly shaking him with a mad intensity, looking into his eyes.  "Say anything at all!"

And when he did, she laughed again.

Only a little later was he able to remind her to try his clothes.

OOC: This scene represents Tilly obtaining the final revelation of her mystery.

Later, when she was recovered, TIlly went about using lesser restoration on anyone who needed it.  Then she sought out Baron Sider to offer him her help.

Re: Episode 1: Gateway

Zhorr was surprised at the Oracle's request, so he just said the first thing that crossed his mind - which happened to be: "You have a beautiful laugh."

This seemed to please Tilly well enough, and he was rewarded with another laugh. The Magus was surprised at the change that had come onto the woman. It was as if she had finally found something that had been missing all along.

Curious, he activated his second sight - and frowned when it failed to respond, reminding him that he was cut off from that particular power source.

Only then it finally came to him that he had been staring - quite ungentlemanly, he thought - at the attractive, newly-young, not-exactly-clothed woman for a while, and he once again offered the clothes he was carrying.

Fortunately, Tilly did not appear to be bothered by this - in fact, she looked like very little could bothered at this particular time.

For some reason, Zhorr felt particularly pleased by this.

[19] He accompanied her to the house, and got back to work. He pulled out his spellbook and, while he was waiting for his next companion, he wrote down a couple more spells.

The next newcomer turned out to be another attractive female... And there was little chance to confuse this particular woman with anybody else: Mirelinda's tattoos pretty much made her look like she was the one traveler who had arrived dressed -  albeit wearing particularly form-fitting clothes.

"Mirelinda, welcome. Well, I don't think we can call you 'grandmother' anymore... Not with a straight face, at least." Smiled Zhorr, offering her another set of clothes. "Actually, it seems I am now the oldest-looking member of the group. Perhaps I should have asked for a second rejuvenation. The others are in the small house over there, which shall presumably be our house until the good baron is done building the tower over there - or another forty or s hours, whichever comes first. There is some diamond dust ready for you, as well."

Mirelinda smiles at the man, then takes a few running steps and leaps into the air, pirouetting with her arms spread.

"How delightful ! Thank you for bringing me, young m... oh, wait, that doesn't work anymore, does it ? Well, thank you anyway. And don't worry about the dust, I brought my own."

Mirelinda grabs one of her tattoo, which promptly disappear while a small silver coffer appear in her hands1. Carefully she opens it, then touches two more tattoos2, made of identical elaborate runes this time; and the coffer fills with diamond dust. She takes a carefully measured amount, and speaks to the air3.

"You know what would be handy right now ? That Dowry Chest I made when I was young, it had such nice clothing. Oh, how I wish I had another one right now !"

At her words, a large wooden chest appears at her feet. She opens it, rummages through, and takes out a colorful dancer outfit in red and green.

"I haven't worn this since... well, since before you were born, young man. Oh, wait, I really need to change the way I speak. Anyway, this is perfect !"

Mirelinda puts on the outfit, then looks at the heavy chest.

"Now this won't do. Let's see..."

A few gestures, a few words4, and 5 large human-sized wood golem appear, crude humanoid figures made of cast-off pieces of wood. Mirelinda smiles at them.

"Right boys, you and you take my chest and bring it carefully. Let's put it somewhere safe."

Mirelinda herself takes her small silver chest and leads the way to the small house.
