Black has some quick-and-dirty mana options... and artifacts can provide faster mana too.

I never said Ramp was exclusive to Green. It's just easiest in Green. And the Rituals aren't ramp - they don't increase your mana permanently.

Uh, not-exactly-great. Only one person has sent a RTJ so far, and after a week he still hasn't finished his character sheet yet. I was expecting low rates, like four people or so, but I wasn't expecting just like one. I can't tell if this not-exactly-arena thing is going to be fun or not, because not enough people have RTJ'd :(

Would anybody mind posting how they got into Magic, just curious.
I got into it while searching through PSP homebrews and coming upon the most popular one yet, a game based on Magic called Wagic: The Homebrew. After a while I found out that it was based on Magic, and I kept that in mind.
Some notes, firstly,
Homebrew = Hacking
but
Hacking is not = Piracy
I did hack my PSP, but don't have any pirated games on it. I don't believe in piracy.
Secondly, it did get the attention of Wizards of the Coast. The lawyers sent them a Cease and Desist, and what happened was that the main developer, wololo, had to remove all copyrighted material, including the images on the cards, so I think having the old versions is illegal, but having the new versions is legal?
Thirdly, it's pretty old, and it's why when I put the cards into the Excel app, most of the cards read as illegal in Standard and Extended. I don't know the difference between Standard, Extended, Legacy, Vintage and Modern.

What exactly is {1}? Isn't that already any color, so why pay up another mana to get the same result?

Because you could also use colorless.

EDIT: {1} means Colorless, so you can only get colorless with that land or you can pay a colorless to get any color mana you want.

Technically it is colorless.  You can tap it for 1 colorless mana.

You can tap 1 mana of any color plus Shimmering Grotto to get a mana of any color.

For example:  Let's say you have 4 Forests and Shimmering Grotto in play, 5 total mana.  You have a card in your hand that cost 3W.  You tap 3 forest to fulfill the colorless mana requirement and then your last forest plus Shimmering Grotto to satisfy the W.

What are sideboards? You could just put some cards there, and when you feel like it, you swap it with a card in your hand?

Basically it's a pool of cards you can swap into your deck between rounds in a match. Also I'm back from the pit I disappeared off to, sorry about those I left hanging in games.

I feel obligated to say this as well. you cann;lt put 8 llanowar elves in the deck the max you can have is 4. and as has allready been stated you need a minimum of 60 cards total.

Ramp is a good strategy though. a few tier 1 decks use it as well as many tier 2 (tier 1 is pro level will dominate the format tier 2 are highly competative decks that give tier 1 a good run for their money)

As for how i got into magic. I joined thge RP club when i went to university. they didn't RP they just played magic. They sucked me in as well as most of my student loan. and although now i don;t still see them i now have string ties to the local magic community. even being considered one of the better players with my well known major weakness of building quirky decks rather than good ones.

Also i forgot to mention how did people find consiprasy this weekend if anyone managed to draft it

I thought it was very Meh but ok as set goes. wan't excited by any of the new cards except for Dak Fayden. and i got one Wooop. although that said a lot of the new cards look amazing for EDH play.

Just had a look at Conspiracy - a lot of stuff there that is very focused towards Draft...

Oooh!  Really?  Makes me wish I could get in on a few draft tourneys.

there is onl;y one in each pack so its not as fun as it initially looks. they take up the basic land slot and moist are taken quick enough so that you will only see one of them maybe two if you are lucky.
