That's why a lot of times if you think your opponent might have a counter and it matters to the rest of the turn, you can stop and ask if there is any responses before continuing with your turn.

I just haven't really done that because I'm running a lot of BIG creatures, so if they get countered I'm still tapped out and there's nothing I can do about it.

I didn't see any counters last game, so I wasn't sure if Matt had any. There were a lot of points where having a counterspell would have been pretty handy for him.

So question regarding the legality of playing certain cards. If you wnted to use a card with draft functionality, in a non draft format, like for example... Paliano Vangaurd

http://mythicspoiler.com/cn2/c...palianovanguard.html

Is it OK, to just play him for 1W as a 2/2 Human Soldier if you wanted to, and ignore all his draft related powers? Or does the fact that he's explicitly for draft games mean he's not legal in other formats?

If it's like how they dealt with the previous Conspiracy set, All the non-Conspiracy type cards will be legal in Commander, though the ones mostly reliant on Draft are going to not be particularly useful. This means like things like Melee, Goad, Will of the Council, and being a Monarch will all be on the table for Commander games.

Met Fischer (an M:tG artist) yesterday at DragonCon. He was not the only one in attendance and everyone I met was super awesome, but he was the only one advertising that he'd sign his own cards. I'd purchased two packs in the vendor area earlier and asked him if he knew how lucky I was. He shrugged and I pulled the packs from my pocket, asking him if what cards he'd recently done work on. He mentioned Dark Confidant, which I think he's pretty proud of since he talked about it, but then went on to say that he'd recently, in the most recent Conspiracy set, done the work on "Burning Wish."

I opened the first pack and thumbed to the rare, a card that was definitely not Burning Wish. I scowled. "Hunh," I said as I grabbed the other pack. Mr. Fischer looked at my brother for a moment as I popped it open and went straight for the rare.

"Is this your card," I asked as I showed him "Burning Wish."

It was a pretty good moment. He signed it, which may or may not effect the value of the card, but I'll always have that memory.

Hi there!

I'm a player with ancient cards from Revised onwards mainly.

I'm not sure what rules sets my cards would come under to make playing them legal, (and am too lazy to look) so I am looking for brave souls willing to leap in against my decks as they are.

Most of my decks are untuned multiplayer style with no Revised era multilands (I sold all mine off) years ago. There are no Moxes, Black Lotus' or vice/land destruction/insane killer variations... But there are mixes of cards which come from all sorts of sets from Revised through to whatever was around 10-15 years ago :D

If anyone wants a game, let me know :)

legacy and vintage are probably solid formats for you. You might be able to pull off EDH/Commander if you bought up any Legends packs, but not buying more intermediary packs (Odyssey, Kamigawa block, Zendikar kinda stuff) might make that pretty hard.

On the other hand, not owning the cards physically is not necessarily an impediment to playing them here.

Frequently I do a bit of research, put together my virtual deck here, play a few rounds to see if that works, and then build the physical one.

I also buy stupid amounts of cards IRL.

Absolutely.   I usually play the same deck multiple times, tuning it before archiving it ready to bring out later.   On the archive tab of my spreadsheet, I have about 120 decks that Ive developed over the years - some are duplicates with minor tweaks.  Some are useless and will never see the light of day again.  Some regularly get dusted off and pulled out - usually when new people join the board who won't have seen them before!

Well, Gonti Lord of Luxury was the one that got me thinking about it, but there's a bunch of them. Like Phyrexian Portal, Fortune's Favor, Grimoire Thief, Praetor's Grasp, etc.

Phrexian Portal
http://magiccards.info/ai/en/168.html
{3}: If your library has ten or more cards in it, target opponent looks at the top ten cards of your library and separates them into two face-down piles. Exile one of those piles. Search the other pile for a card, put it into your hand, then shuffle the rest of that pile into your library.

Well that one is easy  you show your library to your opponent and they tell you how many cards are in each pile.  You then choose one of the piles and your opponent tells you what cards were in it and you exile them.   The other pile you choose a card from it and then shuffle it back into your library and continue.

Fortune's Favor
http://magiccards.info/emn/en/61.html
Target opponent looks at the top four cards of your library and separates them into a face-down pile and a face-up pile. Put one pile into your hand and the other into your graveyard.

Very similar process to above

Grimoir Thief
http://magiccards.info/mt/en/35.html
Whenever Grimoire Thief becomes tapped, exile the top three cards of target opponent's library face down.

You may look at cards exiled with Grimoire Thief.

{U}, Sacrifice Grimoire Thief: Turn all cards exiled with Grimoire Thief face up. Counter all spells with those names.

This one is pretty tricky since your opponent shouldn't get to see which three cards you've exiled.  I would say that this one is definitely unplayable in this format... unless you enlist the help of a third party to "hold" your deck for you and deal you cards.

Praetor's Grasp
http://magiccards.info/nph/en/71.html
Search target opponent's library for a card and exile it face down. Then that player shuffles his or her library. You may look at and play that card for as long as it remains exiled.

Same for this one, the opponent shouldn't see which card you are choosing from his deck...  and similar for Gonti, Lord of Luxury I see.

Hey guys, I've just joined, mainly looking to play EDH, Tiny leaders, and to bounce some decklists around. My favorite EDH is a Melek spellslinger deck, but it would probably be a nightmare to play on here, and it's also not much fun to play against, because I usually reserve it for douchey opponents... So I doubt you'll see much of it. I'm also working on a loosely Garruk themed EDH, which I'd appreciate suggestions for once I get the decklist up.

It doesn't matter.  You get to search the not exiled pile, so therefore you know (by deduction) what cards were in the other pile.  The only bit you don't know is which cards are in which pile when you make the choice to exile them.   You rely on your opponent being honest and picking the pile you chose.

The point is you aren't supposed to know what either pile has before you choose.

It can make a bit of difference if You know that the top 10 cards are all Swamps or something, or if part of your killer combo is in there versus not knowing anything about which cards were in the top 10 as choices.

Just curious, how do we handle the randomness card draw in virtual? It occurs to me that a physical deck is unlikely to be truly random, due to how people shuffle. I'd expect cards to be less likely to clump than if they were truly random, resulting in physical decks typically being more reliable...

One awesome combo I ran into in a blue Planeswalker deck is Teferi, Temporal Archmage + Jace, The Mind Sculptor + The Chain veil + 4-Mana generating permanents.

If you want it to go semi-infinite, you need some way of generating more than one mana from those permanents, for the full infinite some kind of proliferate, but the basic idea is... You use Jace's +0 power to mill someone 20 cards, Teferi's +1 if you like, then tap the mana generators, to generate 4, use it to power the Chain veil, Use Jace's 0 again, then use Teferi's -1 to untap the Veil and as many Mana generators as you can. repeat until Teferi runs out of counters or you mill everyone to death.

If you already hit Teferi's Ultimate before you get the full set up going, you can even do this on opponents' turns!!

EDIT: Another fun combo I never got to pull off myself, Ajani's "take only one Damage" Ultimate, combined with Urza's Armor. Laugh as "Taking Damage" is a thing only other people do.

EDIT 2.0: That was supposed to be Jace, Memory Adept not the Mind Sculptor, and it only mills 10 a shot.

Funny you should mention chainveil+tefrei

Ral zarek + xenagaros + chain veil = ~infinite turns

I might be in for a walker deck game. I'll probably throw up my shortlist on here soon. Plenty of silly powerful stuff in there. Makes it hard to know what to cut.

Seems like I started an arms race too... Found out today that one of my buddies is working on gaddock teeg just to counter my walker deck. -_-

His +1 makes a mana for every creature in play, so he subsidises the cost of activating the chain veil. With 4 creatures, you can use it as many times as you like. He can also make the cteatures he needs to do it, at a pinch.

Hi Bill and welcome back.

I've been pretty quiet recently, partially due to a heavy work load, and partially due to me currently testing the latest version of my spreadsheet... a big rewrite in many places.   Mainly due to the need to figure out a way in which I can import card data from an official source on a regular basis WITHOUT introducing human error - which is something that had happened frequently in the past.

It is NEARLY ready for publication  so watch this space for a little longer and i'll release a new version of the spreadsheet.  i'm hoping that I can then rekindle enthusiasm here  since, as you'll have noticed, it is pretty damn quiet here at the moment...

OK folks - those of you who are still here at least - you will be pleased to know that I have finally updated my spreadsheet!!!

http://www.nj-pbem.com/Downloads/index.htm

It has been updated with a new mechanism to import cards from mtg.json - effectively a dataset provided by WoTC for companies who have online data bases of cards.  It required a fairly extensive rewrite of code and I *think* I have ironed out he bugs that naturally formed as part of the process...   Having said that  I am sure more will come out of the woodwork... hopefully not fatal ones!

I can now start to think about actually using the spreadsheet to have a game...

My first question, will be - do you use Excel?   IF you do, then it makes creating decks and playing games here on RPOL a ton easier...  if you don't then, well several other players don't either, and they manage fine...

What is your preferred type of game?  one on one?  multiplayer?  Commander?  Standard? Legacy? etc

Any format works, I don't mind :)

Re: OOC Chatter Mk III

I generally play modern format and prefer multiplayer games. I can play single player games too, they just tend to end quickly for me IRL. Local players have decks that give them the win in 4 turns in single player. I tend to survive longer if they have other targets to worry about first. I have used excel before and will see if I still remember enough to be useful. Otherwise, I will muddle through with a list and some dice.

I am just ironing out a bug in my data import - but I hope to upload a new version of my spreadsheet later today with the latest cards in it...  I will post the link.

For your info Kurin, at the moment, there are only two games currently active - a one-on-one between myself and Nyoze  and a multiplayer one between Munch, Nyoze and myself.   We have a lot of members, but the majority of them have been silent for a fair while now - so we really need some new blood like yourself to get some more games going!

Re: OOC Chatter Mk III

Hi, thanks for the welcome, and sorry about the delayed response.  I had to go somewhere over the weekend.  When I was collecting and playing M:tG, I stopped after the Nemesis set came out.  So I've clearly been out of practice for awhile.  I would like to stick to cards from Weatherlight and earlier, as I am more familiar with those, and I think the earlier days of M:tG were more fun.  Would make decks from cards up to Nemesis though, if someone wanted, it would just take more time to deckbuild as I am not familiar with those cards nearly as much.  There is one deck finished up, and working on more.  Glad to be here :)

edit - I have a Linux computer, so I guess the best way to go is make a spreadsheet and number the cards 1-60 (or however many cards are in my deck).  Then label them as I draw them from the deck after rolling a d60, and just rerolling after I get a number I already drew?  Also, casting instants like counterspell that you would like to use during an opponents turn, I guess that is handled after the player that is playing the spell which is being countered is done with his/her turn?

Re: OOC Chatter Mk III

There are certain circumstances where the playing of instants can be problematic...  generally, if you realise someone is playing a blue deck with lots of counter spells, you might pause your turn at a critical point to ask "Any response?" - though most of the time, we just retcon whatever...

For example, say I cast a spell to destroy a potential blocker, then attacked...  if my opponent then casts an instant to save his creature, it would only be appropriate to review the decision to attack - since it might no longer be the best tactic!

We are fairly laid back here - and if we need to rewind a bit to take into account the effects of a counterspell (or similar instant ability etc) then we will.

As for playing with older builds - not sure how easy that would be for me - since I just build my decks based on a particular legality rather than date of block release - I might have some old decks archived that come from very old releases...  but I'd need to check...

In reply to Kurin (msg # 193):

Just been thinking about your query about creating a spreadsheet... This is where I was - some 10 or more years ago when I first started developing my spreadsheet.

The way I started was as follows:

1 tab for the deck
1 tab for the hand/table.

The deck obviously has all the cards, numbered as you say from 1-60 (or more if you have more in your deck! :-)]  This tab has all of the card details...  If you want, I can give you a comma separated value version of my database with all the cards, you could then use that to create your decks - so you have the fields you want to use for the game itself...

On the table tab, you have different sections to reflect the top of the library, your hand, the table, the graveyard, exile and the bottom of the deck.

Various formulas lookup of the card details from the Deck tab and put them into formula so that they are ready to copy and paste into the game,

The tricky part is the "drawing" the card randomly.

The way I originally did it was to have a cell that had a formula to generate a random number between 1 and the maximum number of cards in the deck.
A second formula then checked to see if the random number generated is already on the Table deck.  If it isn't then it would simply return "OK".   When drawing a card, you would simply get the spreadsheet software to re-calculate a new random number...  If it didn't say "OK" then you try again.   My first macro was basically to simply keep recalculating till the formula said "OK".  Once it did, it would copy the randomly generated number into a different cell representing the drawn card.

I just drew two Sphinx's tutelage, Jace's one card version, and Mind's Dialation;  so with the number of cards I was drawing, that could have been quite nasty.

And within my next draw was Startled Awake, so that would have been fun.

OK guys - sounds like we have a new Modern 4-way about to start!

I'd better dig out an old Modern deck (that sounds like an oxymoron!) and brush the cobwebs off it (i.e. update it).  :-)

Lets go for Table 1

Figured I would provide an update; I've got 3 decks made, but need to test them.  There might be some fine tuning to do. I can't download the csv version, it looks like it just goes to a new webpage with lots of text.  I did download the 97-2003 version, and will try that.  LibreOffice gave me some errors when I opened it.  I'll let you know if it works.  Thank you for trying to make a csv version though.

What browser are you on?   Have you tried right clicking and "Download linked file"? (or equivalent command?)

EDIT:
BTW - I've also thought to edit the .csv version to delete the duplicates - so the file is now a more manageable 8Mb instead of 14!

I'm using Firefox 58.0.1.  There is no download option when I right click.  One would think that I could just left click and select Save File like the .xls version.  The webpage it opens is a card list, but it looks like a .txt file.

Just had another thought.  It is basically just a text file,  The other possibility is that you click on it, so it opens up, then go to the file menu and click save there... just make sure it saves with the .csv ending.

Hello I'm new, I used to play a lot back in the old days of MtG, I played from Unlimited til Ice Age, and then returned around Odyssey and played for another year. I'm just looking at some nostalgia.

Obviously my real cards are old, and some are very valuable in today's market. I also sold some off years ago to pay for car repairs (like my Lotus and Moxes :), which I no longer have).

I'm working on a deck and hope to have something ready in a week or so depending on time :). It's just been a long time since I played but looking forward to it.

Most of the cards I'm familiar with I think would be Vintage :(. I'll have to check on the different rules for the sets. I probably will make a very simple deck first just to get into the swing of things.

Hmm seems Vintage allows the Power 9, so since that's banned here don't think can do it. I guess though this might be a modified Vintage here, as Legacy has a far greater banned list, though I assume we don't use the ante cards here either since there would be no point in doing so :).

I tend to start with a search for a General (i.e. a legendary creature), filtering by multi-colour and ordering by CMC so that I look at the cheaper multi-colour generals first...  Once I spot a general that looks like it might be fun to play - or particularly useful to keep returning to the battlefield, I then think of what game mechanics/specific cards would complement it.  Having started down that path, I then  narrow my card search, looking for cards with complementary game mechanics, filtering by colours and legality to make sure I only select cards that are compatible with my Commander's colours.

I've already picked out a general :)

I'm just looking for cards to fill around him :). It's not like my old decks meant to defeat card ditching decks since I can only have 1 of each card other than land :), though there are enough similar creatures in some cases that I might still end up with 4 of some (different names, same stats/effects).

Re: OOC Chatter Mk III

I have a question.

I notice for example that there are multispell cards, I don't remember them. However in Commander it says you can't have any cards in the deck that don't share characteristics with the Commander. Now I did a search on the site given and it says this is legal but sometimes engines aren't always correct.

For example Turn/Burn one side is red and one side is blue. Now searching for a black/red commander it says this is a legal choice but that seems to violate the deck construction rules that the card can have no mana symbols not shared with its Commander.

Thus I want to know if it would be legal to put such a card in a Black/Red Commander deck. I'm thinking not but want to see what you guys say.

Still if that's a way to get a game I'll give it a go :)

According to deckstats my deck would cost $47.85 :), which means an average of less than 50 cents a card :). It has 19 Rares and 1 Mythic Rare. The most expensive card is $3.67. Yes I found far more expensive cards that would work and I own a few but I decided to limit the cost of my deck :)

I never calced out the cost of one of my decks. That could be interesting. Let me check on what I think is my cheapest Commander deck... (Granted the site I used picks only from whichever version of the card you pick, so I didn't check all the reprints for the cheapest one)

Huh, I was frankly amazed at how cheap somethings I thought were really good cards are.

OK my deck weighed in at $365.06, and literally over 2/3rds of that was one card, Gaea's Cradle. I thought my creatures and stuff were crazy powerful, but even a junk card like Spidersilk Armor was more expensive than all my non-Legendary creatures except 2. Probably put together. Most of them weighed in at under 10c. I was really surprised.

Zarrick: OK

Matthew: Hi, I was trying to use the .xls version, and when trying to compile it gives an error on a line that has the following

Dim nTime

Looking at other lines, it looks like the structure of a line that has Dim on it is structured like "Dim (variable) as such_n_such". There were other errors when it first opened, but that was the one it gave me when I compiled it.  Its in Module 1, line 1168.

Right now it won't let me make a deck or anything when I click on the Click Here to Get Started button. It gives the error "BASIC syntax error. Expected: Sub."  I hope it is just referencing the line mentioned above.

Edit: Ok, it is giving me more errors when I try to close it.
"BASIC syntax error. If not allowed outside a procedure." It highlights the #If in the line "#If Mac Then" line 49 in Document Objects.

"BASIC syntax error. Expected: Sub." It highlights nTime like it did in the above compile.  Line 1168, Document Objects

"BASIC syntax error. Statement block still open: End If missing." Line 153 in Document Objects, it has "Next" on it, with and "End If" on the line above it.

I'm pretty sure all of those same errors appeared when I tried to open it.. the text boxes, anyway.  Hopefully this is helpful and not a big headache.

Try deleting or commenting out the following. I think it is redundant orphaned code that is no longer needed.

quote:
'Dim nTime
'nTime = Timer
'nTime = Timer - nTime
'    Application.ScreenUpdating = False
'    ChangeMacroScreenDisplayStatus = False
'
'    Call unlocksheet
'
'    Call SetTableX         ' Set up the Global Variables
'
'    Call ActualDraw        ' Draw the card
'
'    Call CleanHand
'
'    Call SetTableX         ' Re-Set up the Global Variables following the card draw
'
'    Cells(TableXHand2 - 1, 2).Rows.AutoFit
'    Application.ScreenUpdating = True
'    ChangeMacroScreenDisplayStatus = True
'    ActiveWindow.ScrollRow = 1
'End Sub    ' 0.83 seconds

Not sure about the "If Mac Then" bit  since I'm pretty sure my code doesn't contain anything that I've written that refers to what OS the user is using...   I'm also unfamiliar with where the "Document Objects" is...  which leads me back to my previous question...  what version of Excel are you trying to run this on?

Looks like deleting the JsonConverter module requires me to provide a password when I try to save it, so I may have to comment out the whole section. o.o

The End If error should be an easy one to fix, but I can't figure out what is up with it.  Not that I know much about Basic anyway.

Thank you, and happy fishing!

Hey Matthew!

Yeah, I've previously used your spreadsheet, though it's been about 1.5 years. I love all formats, but Commander has a special place in my heat, 1v1 or multiplayer. I have a Rafiq of the Many deck hiding somewhere. I also love Standard, and then lastly, I like playing around with some Modern decks, but they are dead last in my priority. :P

Re: OOC Chatter Mk III

Hello. I used to play Magic regularly in high school, but I haven't played more than a few times since I graduated. Which was... wow, over ten years ago.

I was never the best player, but I have a couple of decks I'd love to play a few games with again. I guess they're pretty old, so I dunno how tournament-legal they are, but this is mostly pretty casual, right?

Since I have physical cards I guess I don't need it, but I am trying the spreadsheet. I keep getting an error message when I enter my first card. "Run-time error '1004': Unable to get the Vlookup property of the WorksheetFunction class"

I'm the furthest thing from an expert here, but something that seems strange to me is that while the error message pops up when I hit Enter or move to a new cell, the first card itself seems to be populating correctly--it's just every card after that that doesn't do anything. Any ideas?

Re: OOC Chatter Mk III

Hi Zero and welcome.

I've discovered the source of the problem...  My latest change was to include a macro that triggers every time you change selection...  if you select a card name, it looks up the card and populates the card details into a pop-up comment next to the Oracle Rules Text cell...

I failed to put some error checking - so if you select a cell that has invalid card details in it - for example cell D4 in the template deck tab where it will read "Type or copy and paste"...- which is automatically selected when you click return after entering your first card - then it fails to look that up in the card database and throws an error.  I will make sure error checking to avoid that scenario is included in the next version - in the meantime, simply select all of the "Instructions" and delete them (if you get the error pop up whilst trying to select them, then just hit END on the pop up dialog box, finish deleting the Instructions, then click one of the SORT macros just to re-enable the "change" macro - and continue to enter your deck...

Of course, if you mis-type a card name, then you'll probably hit the same bug again...   I'll post when I've fixed and uploaded the next version.

That part doesn't seem to work, but "don't make any errors" was easy enough (I'm a pretty good typist).

Version 11.7: Corrected bug on code to show comment with card text.  Corrected bug on Hide/Show Un-Sets. Added in code to show Card Text in Comment on All Cards Tab. Added a "Deck Notes" section so you can keep a note about your deck and the note gets carried through to the archive.  Amended archive Import macro to include the error                         highlighting so you can see if a deck had been archived with any errors in it.

<GRIN>  It's comments like that that make the development of my spreadsheet all worth while!!  I have tried to make it fairly feature rich :-)

For example, Zarrick recently copied his deck into a post...  I have a macro that will assist with that.   Right-click on the deck tab and you'll see an option that says "Copy Unplayed Library to Clipboard".  Clear the table and you can paste your entire deck in one go... LOL - Though I just tried that, and I seem to have broken it in some way, since it doesn't work anymore... Something else for me to debug!

For those poor souls who don't have Excel, I am close to getting a cut-down version that will work on OpenOffice... Still need a computer of some sort I'm afraid, so if you only play on an iPad or similar, then you're still going to be stuffed I'm afraid, but at least you won't need to have a copy of Excel.

Yeah - 'fraid so.

I suspect it would require a major rewrite to record the additional stuff like - tokens, tapped status, whether a creature was attacking or not, what equipment or enchantments were attached to a creature, emblems attached to a player, how other enchantments/artifacts affected all other creatures, the descriptive text about what you were spending mana on/doing during a turn, not to mention what impacts other players actions and permanents might have on the stuff on your battlefield...

Yeah, I concluded ages ago that it would be simpler to just stick to just setting up the basic layout of the post and the the user simply quotes it and edits it to reflect what has changed.

This is an activated ability.  The COST is the part before the colon.  I.E. Returning 3 lands you control to your hand.
The ability it activates is returning the creature to your hand.  Seems like a hefty cost to return it to your hand...  Especially as it's quite an expensive creature to cast in the first place.

Re: OOC Chatter Mk III

I guess you're referring to the Walking Ballista and whether you can do activate an ability when it has "summoning sickness"...

quote:
(SS)"Walking Ballista - (Artifact Construct, 1/1, {X}{X} (0)
Walking Ballista enters the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters on it.
{4}: Put a +1/+1 counter on Walking Ballista.
Remove a +1/+1 counter from Walking Ballista: It deals 1 damage to any target.)

Well, the key to the answer is if, to activate the ability, you need to tap it, then summoning sickness will apply.   In this case, there is no tappin needed, so the ability can be activated straight away.

BTW Joat, if you right click on the cell and select "Copy to Clipboard" instead of CTRL-C then you'll paste the details into your post without the quote symbols.

Re: OOC Chatter Mk III

Hmmm...  Not sure my spreadsheet can actually do that...

Of course, whilst it is face down, it is like Schrödinger's cat - until you actually open the box to look at it, you don't know whether it is dead or alive... - In this case, you don't know what card it actually is till you turn it over, and it therefore has the same probability as being any other unknown card that is still in your deck.

So leave it in your deck and simply when you need to "turn it over", draw it then.

Remember - the spreadsheet doesn't keep a track of the deck order (except in terms of what cards you've specifically stated are on the top or bottom of the library) and it is only at the moment of drawing/scrying/milling a card, that it actually creates the random number to find out what card is next.

Welcome Nyanthus Stormblade - looking forward to playing with you....  Myself and Munch are the main (only?!) active players here at the moment - and we have a habit of playing EDH (aka Commander)...  but I'm sure we wouldn't be averse to playing other formats as well...  and we always like multiplayer games - so a three-way would be most welcome :)

Happy also to play multiple games simultaneously - so Munch and I will probably start another Commander game shortly - and still be happy to incorporate you on either a one-on-one or three way game of some sort.

Well, I may have to devote a considerable amount of time to get started. It's been a long time since I played a game and I no longer have my killer deck.

One of the questions that I have is there any cards that are banned or can't have more than one per deck.

My killer deck was able to win second place in one tournament that abided by rules sponsored by Magic the gathering, but then in another tournament I lost on the first elimination round but he most certainly had banned cards in his pile. I felt cheated and robbed. It wasn't even a struggle or competition.

I soon lost interest going to tournaments after that experience.

Generally speaking, unless you agree on something with the people you're playing with, like "Un- cards are allowed" or something, it is by whatever the format's banlist. That said I'm not tournament level, so you might not WANT to steam roll me too badly with a high end tournament deck. :D

Re: OOC Chatter Mk III

Yeah - we're pretty laid back here, though if someone says they want to play a particular format, be it "Standard", "Modern", "Legacy", "Vintage", "Commander" (aka EDH), or even Highlander or Pauper, then we'd do our best to abide.  If you are using my spreadsheet (and I know that not everyone can) then it will generally test the legality of the deck for you when you build it.... though I don't tend to update the card database in it as promptly as I should when new cards come out - so sometimes the legality is very slightly behind where it should be....   :-)

If you want to get back into it quickly, grab a list of cards from a deck off the internet, dump it into the spreadsheet, tweak it if you fancy, and then boom, you're ready to go!    Developing a new deck from scratch is always the slowest thing...  I've been playing here for over 10 years, and developing my spreadsheet over the same time period.  I have over 140 different decks on my archive tab - all of varying legality - several of them no longer legal in any format!   I really should clean it up and dump some, but every now and then I like to grab out an old one and play it for nostalgia :-)

I spend most of my deck development time creating Commander decks - since that is the most fun picking 99 cards to support your General :-)

Nyanthus:

Don’t worry about that - we’ll catch you up in no time!   There are certainly a whole bunch of new game mechanics introduced over the last 15 years!  It might take you a while to get your head around them but the more games you play the quicker you will get the hang of them.

Some of the new things include :
  • Planeswalkers - like a virtual player who acts as your team mate and has loyalty and does stuff for you once each turn.  His actions typically gain or lose his loyalty to you...  Your opponent can attack him just like they can attack you...  Any damage dealt reduces his loyalty to you.  Once his loyalty hits zero, he leaves.
  • Persist and Undying - Creature ability - both very similar.   When the creature dies, it returns with either a -1/-1 counter or a +1/+1 counter respectively.  If it dies again, whilst it has a counter on it, then it dies for good.
  • Double Faced cards - use the Transform mechanism - these are basically double sided cards - once certain conditions are met, they turn over and transform into whatever is on the flip side.  Means that tournament players play with the cards are in sleeves so they can't tell that a double-sided card is next on the library to draw!
  • Meld Cards - two cards that join together to create a bigger badder version of a card.
  • Flip Cards- cards that are basically two cards in one - the older version of Transform.
  • Split Cards - 2 cards in one again - you can cast either.  Sometimes, you can pay extra and "fuse" the two halves together to cast both at the same time.
  • Leveller Cards - you pay to "level up" the card, at certain level thresholds, the creature gains new abilities.
  • Saga Cards -
  • "The Monarch" - some cards will "bestow the monarchy" on you - and grant a benefit.... if someone else gains the monarchy, they gain the benefit instead.
  • Equipment - these are artifacts that you equip to a creature to boost it.
  • Vehicles - these are artifacts that

Of course, there are a load of creature abilities - some of which you'll recognise, and many of which are self explanatory or explained on the text of the card...  Typically these are described as a simple keyword:

  • Trample,
  • Lifelink,
  • Flying,
  • Unblockable,
  • Deathtouch - any combat damage dealt to another creature kills it without needing to get it to zero toughness
  • First Strike - the combat damage step has two stages - first strike damage step and normal damage step...  if a creature WITH First Strike is blocked/blocks another creature without it, then it gets to deal its damage first... If it is enough to kill the other creature, then the other one never gets to deal its damage...
  • DoubleStrike - even better than First Strike, this creature gets to deal its damage twice!   Once in the first strike damage step, and once in the normal damage step.  If it is blocked by a creature that it kills in the first strike damage step then its normal damage is dealt to the player (or the planeswalker if that was the opponent!)
  • Protection from XXX,
  • Landwalk - is unblockable if the defender has a land of the appropriate type.
  • Intimidate -  can't be blocked except by creatures that share a colour with it
  • Fear - can't be blocked except by black or artifact creatures
  • Haste - can attack or use its tapping abilities the turn it enters the battlefield.
  • <table>Hexproof</table>
     - can't be targeted by your opponents.,
  • Shroud - can't be targeted by anyone - not even you.
  • Haunt - returns to play when it dies attached to another creature, almost like a creature enchantment (aka aura).
  • Flash - can be cast at anytime you could cast an instant.
  • Reach - can block flying creatures as if it had flying itself.
  • Vigilance - doesn't need to tap to attack
  • Banding - (old school!) can join with other creatures with banding to allow you to distribute the damage dealt to the band rather than your opponent
  • Rampage - gets a bonus based on how many creatures are assigned to block it
  • Ninjitsu - can be played tapped and attacking for a reduced cost by returning an unblocked attacker to your hand... this can take place before or after the damage dealt step.
  • Prowl - can be played for a reduced cost if a goblin or rogue creature dealt damage during the turn.
  • Infect - deals damage to players in the form of Poison Counters (10 poison counters and you die - you can't heal Poison counters!)
  • Wither - deals damage to creatures in the form of -1/-1 counters
  • Flanking - gives the blocker a -1/-1 till end of turn
  • Phasing - makes permanents disappear from the board every other turn.
  • Horsemanship - can only be blocked by other creatures with horsemanship
  • Shadow - can only be blocked by other creatures with Shadow
  • Fading -
  • Flashback -
  • Madness -
  • There are several others, but they are more specific

There are some minor changes to things like the timing in the Combat Phase, but we'll discuss that first time it becomes an issue - since most of the time, it doesn't make a difference.

Given you are probably most familiar with the oldest cards, I’ll assume we're going to play Legacy for the moment.  Are you using my spreadsheet to create your decks?  You can apply a filter to  the All Cards tab when you are building it to make sure you only pick cards of a particular legacy, however once it is built, it will tell you what it is legal in :-)

I’ll set up a new table so you and I can start a one-on-game, and another new table for the three of us to again play Legacy.   Hopefully you'll be inspired to try a Commander deck too soon and we can have a three way Commander game :-)

EDIT: Added some more abilities I'd forgotten... :-)

Re: OOC Chatter Mk III

Hexproof also has "Hexproof from " X color, in one of the recent expansions, because they didn't want to reprint Protection.

Intimidate allows Artifacts to block too, right?

And if you're bringing up Ninjutsu, you might as well bring up Bushido. That gets you +1/+1 if that creature blocks or is blocked.

Bolster gives +1/+1 counters to weaker creatures. Mentor too.

Undying and whatever the opposite version was.

Prowl.

Goad.

Skulk.

Although most of these have reminder text.

Lets see here, you brought up the Monarch, but there's also The City's Blessing if you have 10 permanents and an ascend card.

Legendary Sorceries can only be cast if you have a Legendary Creature or Planeswalker in play...

Of course, (thinking of silver linings) if you are bed-bound and sitting/lying there bored, then that could be optimal time to work on some new deck creation!  :-)  Though having a laptop you could use in bed is a bit of a prerequisite for that... and assuming you're not so ill you can't think straight!

Get well soon - looking forward to getting some more games going... I've just updated my spreadsheet with the latest cards (and even taken the time to further automate the update process so I can do it at the click of a button now!)

Thanks Zarrick - no pressure - life comes first.

On another subject - Welcome to MoriRo - a new player to join us!

MoriRo - (unless you'd prefer another handle) - feel free to introduce yourself.  Read the RTJ / READ ME FIRST... thread and feel free to ask any questions - either via private message to me, or here.

What sort of games are you interested in?  Standard one on one?   Modern?  Legacy? Vintage?  Commander?   Multiplayer?

Definitely consider playing with a virtual deck - a) you have access to pretty much whatever cards are legally allowed and you aren't limiting yourself to your own collection, and b) if you have a suitable method of managing your deck/hand/table etc (I recommend my spreadsheet but then I am biased since I developed it!), then you don't need to keep your cards physically accessible during a game.

If you are interested in the latest copy of my spreadsheet, I'll try to get the newest version uploaded so you can get access to the latest cards.

I recommend LackyCCG, as it is not reliant on Excel, shows you the card images, and more importantly has a really good shuffler.

The only problem is it doesn't analyze decks for legality in a format, which Matt's spreadsheet does.

Ah - well I confess I never have the time to play any other way than playing here...  It makes for a slow game - but I confess I actually like that - it gives me time to really think through a turn - to figure out the best play possible...  :-)

But if you want to just discuss deck building/game mechanics - hell, I'm OK with that too.   I have to admit that the number of active people on this board isn't that many at the moment - but there are at least 2 of us who are likely to give you some feedback... Munch (aka The MunchKING) is usually up on the latest cards and he and I are experienced players of quite a few years, so familiar with the rules!

Re: OOC Chatter Mk III

I started with Alpha and stopped with Ice Age, selling almost my entire collection for rent/food for 3 months. Then I got back in when I started teaching at a high school that had a 'Planes Walker' MTG club because I knew the sponsor and he needed somebody to watch the kids about once a month. Spent about $250 on Kaladesh and then only purchased 4 of a card that I wanted as singles from there, nothing higher than $5.

Most of what I will be theorizing about will be for Arena, which doesn't take that much time IMO, but I understand that many don't like the format.

So what do you guys like out of the War of Sparks? Particular Cards, the idea behind Amass, etc?

I had to google Arena :-)  (the phrase that had gone over my head) - I might have to give it a go at some point!

As for War of Sparks - not played any cards from the set yet - but from reviewing some of them - there are plenty that would fit very well with a number of decks I already have...

Particularly liked Light the Beacons as a way to pull out your planeswalkers and that quite a few planeswalkers have powerful, albeit  purely defensive always active features...

The new set seems to work well with Green Elementals, Exploration, and Proliferate couple with a few of the green/white Planeswalkers. Pretty potent unless you can kill the Elementals before they can get pumped up. Still have to deal with the explorers who get pips though.

Not sure if anybody has seen it yet, but the new Sphinx in the next corset has a guaranteed spot in my Wheel/Group Draw deck. six (6) Mana 4/5, Flying, pay 2B to Draw 2, Discard 1 card, and most importantly....whenever it deals damage to a player(not even just combat damage, but damage), you may reveal your hand.

You reveal cards with at least 6 different Converted Mana Costs, that player loses the game.

Yeah, that one looks bonkers, but it's probably going to be hard to make the 6 different CMCs work.

I personally recommend Lackey CCG if you need a card and deck building resource. It can handle loads of different card game types too. :D

I would like to point out that if Moldgraf dies, you have to pick a replacement effect, either exiling it to bring back two creatures, or bringing it back and flipping Journey. You unfortunately can't do both, as they're both replacement effects.

Well yeah, but as I don't have any creatures in my Graveyard right now, the choice should be easy.

AH yeah. Easiest way would be to quote someone else's post you like so you can get all the formatting you like in.

For example if you like everything lining up nice and neat < tt > is the way to go.

That's what I figured, yeah.

It was weird making such a low powered deck, after watching you guys play a few turns. Most of the people I play with in person have much more competitive decks so I tried to match your decks with this new one lol. Obviously this is with no offense intended, some people like less stressful decks and that's perfectly fine with me.

I mean I really like trying weird commanders out.

Grist, Thantis, ALL the XP guys, that chef with the really long name, etc.

I tell you what, when we do that big four player game, I'll show you a REALLY wacky commander. :D

If you right-click on a zone, one of the options should be who can see the cards in there. Just select Reveal to All or Reveal to Owner  then where it says ALL and you will be able to see all your cards. After your done select None and Shuffle for who should see that zone and it will both hide them again and shuffle your library for you.

If you want to look within a specific number of cards, that's an option too. It's under Reaval to all near the bottom as Top X.

When I saw Varchild, I just wanted to run a bunch of effects that would bounce him, which is unfortunate because he's mono-red and there aren't a ton of those effects in red. But it's a really good idea with him because you get to steal Survivors without having to kill him off.

Her, Varchild is a lady.

And while I had Conjurer's Closet in there; I really wanted to just go crazy with Rampage, especially with Nemesis Mask.

Especially with Varchild's War-Riders, if you give someone a ton of Survivors, then attack, He will chainsaw through all the survivors and still trample for full damage.

I honestly wasn't prepared to have that Tree stick around long enough to function multiple times, I guess I'm just used to my playgroup who run a lot of boardwipes and spot removal for threats like that. I hate winning that quickly so I wouldn't have gone that route with my playing if I had known it was going to end so soon. Don't worry though, this next deck isn't build to win fast, although you two might just end up getting tired of dealing with me and try to kill me first after you see some of the things I put in it. ;)

It doesn't really do anything special for the flip cards from Kamigawa. :D

But if you want to transform them, I think they all have a special command on the bottom of the list when you write click them that spawns in their backside. IIRC it's a token so the front side works like a card but the backside will disappear if it changes zones.

From what I understand it was a coding thing. It was easier to program it to do that than program those cards to have a custom backside.

And in eternal formats that works better when things like Ixidron. Or manifest.

It looks for the database where you downloaded the magic plugin when you start it up. If that guy has updated it (like say for a new set), it will download it and ask you to restart your session.
