Re: The Caduceus and the Dagger

Selana woke the pounding of her cabin door. The glass of whatever it was she drank last night lay half consumed on the sidetable in her quarters. Her mind numbed to the outside by it's effects. It took time for her eyes to focus. She could hear muffled voices out in the corridor, insistent voices that intruded on her fugue and grief. "mfflbghm" Selana was mildly surprised at how bad she was. Not in full control of herself. Her mind dulled by the intoxicants in the glass. She wanted nothing more than to finish off the intoxicants and go back to sleep. Her eyes drifted over to the clock in the room. It wasn't even her time awake. The door hissed open as Master Orris Koran stepped into her cabin, his face the very epitome of anger and concern.

"Mistress Venn, I don't have time for this. Some of my soldiers were injured during a fuel explosion on one of their combat shuttles. The sickbay need your attention." he grabbed Selana's arms as she fought back at him, pushing him away. It took two or three seconds for Selana to realise the words that were being spoken. "How many? What's their status?"

Selana could feel the bile rise in her stomach. All she wanted to do was to lose herself in intoxicants and one more the Indari Hegemony would not let her do so. Trying to fight the sudden nausea. Selana closed her eyes as one of her subordinates filled her in with the details she asked for. Selana rose from her bed moving to the sink. Her eyes closed, she reached into her body using her mind cleansing her body. Switching the chemical intoxicants into harmless by products. She regretted the loss, wanting to lose herself in the deep web of numbness as she listened to the reports. She didn't want to spend her life in the harshness of reality. Selana ran her hands under some water and splashed the water onto her face. As she rose, she was completely and utterly sober. "Start the burn protocols for all of the victims. Start painkillers for the walking wounded. Anyone in trauma category IV or higher needs to be tended to immediately. Have the triage team ready the patients according to the wartime regime. I'll be down shortly." She stared at the officer looking deep into his eyes, she didn't need to read his mind to feel the doubts and distaste the others had for her "You might not think much of me Master Koran, but I can assure you that your subordinates are in good hands. Now leave. I shall arrive presently."

*************************************

Selana was exhausted. She'd spent hours supervising the medical care of the injured and more to the point training the medical team in how to effectively manage mass casualties. It was plain that most had arrived direct from training and the accident had stressed the department to breaking point, yet for all of that, they'd succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. No deaths. None, though some would need to go home permanently. Selana sat at the computer filing the notes from each of the surgeries she'd had to perform and sign off on. A quick glance at the clock had told her she'd been awake for far longer than she should have. Selana sat down at the computer and as the files scrolled across the screen she cried. For the first time in two years she'd not even thought about the loss of her daughter. The tears continued to flow even as Selana drifted off to sleep at her station. The work continuing behind her as if nothing had happened.

Re: The Caduceus and the Dagger

Dreams of a confined place, cramped, noisy, the smell of blood.
Far from home.
A medical bay floating, open to the stars, illuminated with harsh light.

She is laughing, alabaster skin, the light in her eyes, her perfect smile
A face you remember.
Lying on the cold operating table, throat cut, face grey, empty lifeless eyes.

You wake up in a cold sweat, slumped over your workstation. The screen has gone dark to save power. Once you sit up, MoDet systems reactivate the screen. A message appears.
