"<If your grandfather did something that the Kahuna Nui would not dare to do, it must have been a great impropriety. To exchange a life for a life is to re-write the Kumulipo.>" The elder sits shakily on the end of the couch. "<The chant of creation and destiny should not be treated so lightly. But whatever he did it was not only dangerous, it was dangerously imperfect. How else would I remember things that never happened?>"

" I don't know. I too think of things sometimes and when I think back I have this black spot for some reason. I can remember my early years and then after grandfather's funeral but there is a period of time I just don't seem to have memories of."

He fell silent for a moment " There is another thing," he had debated if he should tell her about his powers on the way over to the island but he knew David was close to her and it would be better coming from him that from David

"Since grandfather's death I've been able to do things, things that are not possible...... Its hard to explain but it seemsI can bend time with my mind...." he let that statement hang in the air between them waiting for her reaction

Ben felt crestfallen, he couldn't believe his grandfather would do something evil but in grief he might have done something selfish and stupid.

"My grandfather was a good man whatever he did he did for no evil intent" he was getting angry, how dare this woman sit there and talk about his grandfather after knowing him for most of her life.

"These powers may have come out of a stupid act but they are not evil. Power is only evil in the hands of an evil person."

He stood and opened his bag throwing the contents of it on the floor" I have tried to live by the values my grandfather instilled in me. I have used these powers to save lives, I wear this.." He kicked his costume " to protect my family and friends but I do not count myself as an evil man.... I am trying to do the right thing...." He fell silent the implications of what he had just done weighed heavy on him but he needed to stand up for his grandfather come what may

"<The haole have an expression; 'the road to Hell is paved with good intentions'.>" She says slowly. "<Kahuna Nui is older and wiser than I am, and he has walked in the spirit world. If he says that ill fortune follows from your grandfathers actions, I cannot contradict him. Only you can prove him wrong.>"

Ben looked into the woman's eyes "then I will have to do just that" he said as he pushed all the contents back into his bag.

"Knowing what you know now will you still allow me to stay under your roof for a few days to get my thoughts together or do yiu wish me to leave?"

"<You may stay. I choose to honor the man your grandfather was, not the troubled soul he may have become.>" She says with finality. "<But what are your plans?>" She nods toward your costume. "<You did not bring that along just to talk to an old woman.>"

Ben chuckled " I remember you when I was a child and I tried to take the cookies from your jar. No matter how much I hid the crime you knew it was me. I suppose I should have known I could not have hidden anything from you."

For the first time he smiled warmly at the old woman remembering those long past days " It is good to see you again I just wish it was under different circumstances"

He picked up the suit. " I want to look around the island. I think there is something going on here that could be harmful to us all. I can't say more because I know so little myself but there has been sightings of strange things around the island and there has been an increase in shark activity in the water round here  that a friend has said is very uncharacteristic"

He sighed " it maybe nothing but then again it might be something bad. I ask your leave to investigate to get to the bottom of it."

" Thank you for your help. I will take your advice and go to the harbour and talk to the men and see if they have noticed anything strange"

With that he shouldered his pack and headed for the door " Is there any supplies you wish me to pick up while I'm there?" he said as he opened the door.

Downslope from the village of Pu'uwai, on the other side of the winding coastal roadway, small breakers lap at the beach. A family is gathering the tiny shells used locally to make crafts to sell to tourists, and a handfull of men are mending nets by a row of beached outrigger canoes. Ni'ihau is probably the only place in Hawai'i where people still fish from traditionally-constructed canoes.

A middle-aged man wearing cut-off jeans and a necklace of shark's teeth looks up as you approach. "Didn't see you at the helipad this morning." He says, twisting knots into his net without looking.

Ben looked over in the direction the voice came from "Oh I was there I just tend to blend in a lot" He replied with a smile.

"I see you're had a few encounters with sharks in these waters" he said pointing to the teeth round the man's neck " I can't imagine them being too aggressive against a fishing boat though...."

He looked out to sea then turned to the fisherman "When you go out next would you be willing to take a passenger I'd love to see some of the sea life out there and have always had fascination and fear of sharks ever since I saw Jaws as a kid.... I would love to see one just once in my life before I have to grow up and head back to the real world of work marriage, mortgages and kids"

"No room for passengers--but if you're willing to work, you can come." He says, squinting at the sunlight reflecting off the sea. "You're kanaka maoli, surely you know how to throw a net." His face is deadpan, but you can tell he's mocking you a little. Net fishing the way he does it is a very specific skill.

"I'm William, by the way." He says, holding out a hand for you to shake. "This is my son Noah, he helps me with the sail. Kanu, Ty, and Ishii over there work the nets."

Kanu, a broad-shouldered Ni'ihau native, tucks a sheaf of fishing spears and a slim water-tight nylon bag about three feet long into one of the outriggers.

"If you're lucky today, we won't see any sharks." William says, and drops into the local dialect. "<This season, the sharks are crazy.>"

"Well I used to do fishing with my grandfather here on the island as a child so I know the ropes so to speak but its been years since I've done it." Replied Ben as he took the offered hand

"Ben, Ben Martin" he said in reply " But just call me Ben."

Several hours later, the outrigger is far out of sight of land. William and Noah handle the single sail skillfully, tacking back and forth against the current. The net team is equally skillful--but they're having no more luck than you are.

Kanu pulls back his empty net for the twentieth time with a look of disgust. "The fish have all been scared away. The Navy was bad enough for fishermen like us. Now we have to deal with this!" He gives William a hard look. "<If we can't make a living catching fish, we should be making one hunting sharks.>"

Grabbing the nets he helped pull them in " The sharks might be the problem scaring the fish off but why would the sharks be acting in this way?" Ben asked the fisherman "surely finding out what has happened to the eco system to alter the sharks feeding patterns and putting that right will bring the balance into the world."

He looked at William " is that not the  Ni'ihau way?"

William nods, but Kanu scoffs. "The Ni'ihau way is to follow a bunch of haole rules! A haole owns the island we live on! Haole in Washington say we can't hunt sea turtles; they're protected. But they're not protected from sharks, so the shark population increases and the fish go away." He gestures toward the nylon bag he put aboard earlier. "I say we shoot a few sharks in 'self-defense'. At least then we can sell the teeth to haole."

As Kanu is delivering his rant, the glare from the water that's had you squinting all morning dims a bit. Clouds are blowing in, covering the sun. Tropical storms move fast, but this doesn't seem quite normal...

" The Haole way is not our way. My grandfather was an elder he believed in the old ways as do I. taking a life because it is only doing what it was created to do is not the way. We need to find the root of the problem or it will never go away no maker how many sharks you shoot."

He looked at the sky "Looks like a storm is brewing but it feels strange perhaps we should head back"

William's young son Noah agrees with you, and starts pulling the hibiscus-fiber lines to change the angle of the sail before being instructed to do so. The outrigger lifts as the long canoe begins it's turn, and William walks out along the spray-wet beam to add weight where needed. "Water's cold, suddenly. This is wrong..."

A mist is rising from the ocean, clammy and strange...

He looked at the sky again "how much time will it take to get back to the harbour?" He asked

"Longer than we have!" William has to shout over the rising wind. "Never seen a storm like this... It'll be on us in a couple minutes!"

Kanu pulls his shirt off, revealing three white scars across his shoulder, and ties it around his waist securing himself to the manu--the carved wooden prow of the canoe. Ty and Ishii grab paddles, and attempt to speed the canoe away from the oncoming storm.

Noah, leaning hard backward as he fights with the rigging suddenly yells in panic "Dad!" A coiling tendril of mist is wrapped around his ankle. It's pulling at him, trying to force him to lose his footing.

Ben acted before thinking and stretching out his hand grabbed the time stream in the area of the young man pulling it to a stop with all his might.

OOC: 09:57, Today: Time Keeper rolled 0 using 2d6-7. time control (7) spend a determination (master of time)

As everything within feet of the boy went into slow motion Ben acted. He moved swiftly across the boat and grabbed the lad pulling him away. At the same moment he sped time back up for the boy alone hoping that the boys new found speed would out pace the slowed down tentacle that had wrapped round his foot.

Re: E5S3 - Pu'uwai, Ni'ihau - TK
You get Noah free of the mist tendril--but in doing so he lost hold of the line he was pulling to control the sail! The angled spar spins around as the rising wind tears at the rigging. The whole vessel tips, raising William high in the air atop the outrigger! Ishii is paddling like mad, and Ty sprawls sideways, trying to shift the canoe's balance--as another tendril of mist curls over the side, groping for his throat!

Kanu, in the prow, slashes with a fishing spear at several more tendrils. The shaft of the spear cuts them cleanly, but they re-form just behind it. They're no more affected by the spear than they are by the wind itself...

Ben saw they were in great danger and now was not the time to put on a mask, now was the time to save his new found friends and fellow tribesmen.

Moving quickly to the front of the boat Ben's mind jumped into the time stream pushing time lines out of his way he found the one he needed one of the future maybes for the boat. The one that showed them coming home safely.

Grabbing it with his mind he pulled with all the might his power would give him. He knew something like this might phase him out of time and space again but he was willing to take the risk for the men on the boat.

OOC: 07:48, Today: Time Keeper rolled -3 using 2d6-7. time control (7) spend a determination (master of time). total 4

Re: E5S3 - Pu'uwai, Ni'ihau - TK
Pulling the entire fishing canoe and all four passengers along with you into hyper-time is a terrible strain... but as the Master of Time you manage it, barely.

The tendrils of fog gel and slow, slashing raindrops almost pause in mid-air, and the waves beneath the canoe seem to thicken as time slows relative to your own perceptions. You're used to the weirdness; your friends aren't. Kanu bellows "What's happening?" William points into the storm, at something that might be dark clouds on the horizon, or something else... "There! We're near land!" Ishi, Noah, and Ty grunt as they push paddles against the temporally-resistant water.

To an outside observer, it would seem like the canoe just became jet-propelled!

Despite the disorientation caused by the sudden storm, you're still certain that the land ahead of you isn't Ni'ihau.
