E5S7 - Somewhere Else - Todd
Todd:
The floor is very hard, and very cold, and you are about as naked as the Comics Code will allow. Opening one eye you can see, from your very low angle, Zhang Jue stalking away across the floor of the huge room. She's headed toward an ornate gold-leaf covered door with a pair of gold-leaf covered foo dogs poised holding up the columnar door frame.

Between you and the sorceress, you can see intricate gold inlay all across the floor. At least three different magic circles, linked to one another with even more elaborate traceries. The stubs of candles, burned down to mere puddles of wax, dot the floor in arrangements that look random to you--but probably aren't.

Re: E5S7 - Somewhere Else - Todd
Oops, Todd says to himself.

He carefully raises his head and checks out the room: no telephones, no windows, no doors other then the one Zhang Jue is heading towards.

So much for my promise to μ-90 to stop acting like an idiot. Time to use my head for something other than a battering ram..

Todd takes a moment to check out the foo dogs. Bet they aren't just decoration.

He closes his eyes and assesses his injuries. Battered, not broken. I need to get myself sorted, he thinks, carefully rolling into the shadows on the side of the room. Once there he draws himself up into a meditation position, establishing a connection with μ-90.

The idea is to activate Todd's "Descendent μ-90" quality so I can gain a recovery advantage to restore my Stamina. Let me know if I have to roll to avoid detection, or if there's a cost.

We can gloss over the details of the connection to keep the story moving.

Re: E5S7 - Somewhere Else - Todd
Todd:

[OOC: No need to roll, unless you're settling in for the night or something. Nobody messes with Zhang Jue's casting chamber, for all the obvious reasons. :)]

Your mentor μ-90 quickly assesses your current situation. "I'd say this isn't any of my business, except that it's totally my business: I don't know much about Late Chalcolithic reproductive rituals, but is it possible that you've already passed on your genes to the next generation?" The voice in your head--your voice, like always--sounds puzzled. "Because, esteemed cave-ancestor, that's the only way I can figure that I'm descended from you, since you are obviously going to get yourself killed here."

Re: E5S7 - Somewhere Else - Todd
"As always your motivational speeches are a source of comfort and inspiration," Todd retorts.

"When I'm out of this situation we'll set aside some time for you to gloat over how wonderful you've become over the intervening five million years. In the meantime I need to restore my internal equilibrium, and it would be enormously helpful if you could just shut up."

With that Todd concentrates on his breath, and feels the connection with μ-90 flow across the ages, rejuvenating his mind and body.

Restoring my stamina to 11!

Anything else from μ-90 before I sever the connection and try to get out of here alive?

Todd:
[OOC: He's said everything he feels is relevant. :)]

While you've been meditating, you've noticed how very quiet it is here; great for concentration. A couple of times you've heard what might have been distant voices speaking in a low register, and once a sound like a door slamming--if it was a door the size of a bus and about a mile away.

The room is a huge octagonal chamber, with carved columns at the corners and a ceiling that comes to a point in the center, about forty feet up. As you noticed before, there's only the one door...

Re: E5S7 - Somewhere Else - Todd
Todd warily steps toward door, sticking the walls as much as possible, keeping a careful eye on the Foo dogs.

I'm going to see if I can "learn a quality" about the Foo dogs. Basically I'm keeping an eye on them to see if they become a threat, and being ready for action if they suddenly come alive.

Awareness 6 + Roll 6,3 > +3 = 9.

Promising roll. Which means I don't notice the landmine I'm stepping on. ^_^

Todd:
You're looking at the foo dogs, and you get the hair-prickling sensation that they are looking at you.

[OOC: You've discovered that they have the Quality Mystically Alert and you have two free Activations.]

Faintly, from somewhere beyond the door, you hear a single musical tone.

Todd proceeds to the door, carefully, ready for the Foo dogs' attack.

Bring it on. :)

If they don't attack I advance to the door and listen closely.

The foo dogs remain as still as the carvings they seem to be. Except for that wierd sensation of being watched.

[OOC: Test Awareness vs a Difficulty of 6 to listen at the door.]

The dogs aren't attacking. Probably an early warning device. See if I can hear what's coming...

Todd leans towards the door, listening carefully.

Awareness 6 + Roll 0 = 6. Barest of successes.

In reply to Todd (msg # 10):
The heavy thudding sound of running feet--heading away from you--masks most of the conversation but you hear the rumbling voice of one of the blue demons saying "...if we keep prodding the big dumb one, he will keep mindlessly flailing away at shadows while the Feather Empress completes her plans..."

Standing there with your ear to the door, you're face-to-carved-face with one of the foo dogs. You're pretty sure the agate eye facing you just blinked. Pretty sure...

Todd:
[OOC: Sorry to hear that your holiday stuff was :-\ instead of :).]

Opening the door is no trouble for you, given your strength. It's not even locked... There's a short hallway beyond, decorated with elaborately painted scrolls hanging from ceiling to floor, and ending in a matching door--with a pair of matching gold-leafed foo dogs.

Speaking of foo dogs; as soon as the door starts to open, the one on the door-frame to your left raises its head and lets out a howl that rattles the chandeliers in the hallway! The other one lets go of the column its holding and attempts to swallow your left leg.

[OOC: Test Prowess vs a Difficulty of 5. Don't forget your free tags on their Mystically Aware Quality--you've been expecting this sort of thing after all.]

Re: E5S7 - Somewhere Else - Todd
With a single motion Todd effortlessly swings his left leg out of the foo dog's mouth, over its head, and slams it into the floor.

Lift leg, and repeat.

Coordination (6) + Martial Arts Expert (+2) + Roll (5) = 13!

According to pg 139 an attack that suffers a massive failure gives the defender an automatic counterattack with a moderate success. I'll take it.

Also the :-\ was for being late in posting. The actual holiday break was a :-)))

My attack (on the current dog if I need to finish it off, on the other if the current dog is out of action): Coordination (6) + Martial Arts Expert (+2) + Roll (-1) = 7.

Re: E5S7 - Somewhere Else - Todd
Todd:
Your counter-attack kick slams the foo dog to the floor. Your finisher sends it flying down the hall, unconscious, and through the door at the far end! That extremely vigorous method of opening the far door activates the foo dogs supporting it. They drop to their paws with low, menacing growls...

The other supporter of the door at your end of the hall takes exception to what you just did to it's (her?) mate, and tries to bite your head off--literally!

[OOC: Test Prowess vs a Difficulty of 5. You still have two free tags on their Mystically Aware Quality--not that you appear to need them! The foo dogs do 3 Stamina on a successful bite.]

Re: E5S7 - Somewhere Else - Todd
Todd backflips over the dog, landing on its back. He leans forward, grabbing its forepaws and wrestling it to submission.

Once that's done Todd has a very heavy dog-shaped missile to hurl at the two remaining dogs.

At least that's the plan.

Using acrobatics to evade for a bit of variety: co-ord 6 + acro 1 + roll 2 = 9. I'll spend one of my free invokes to turn the dog's attack into an massive failure, giving me a free moderate success. For wrestling that's a partial hold, so the dog's actions are at +2 difficulty.

I'm assuming I need a major or massive success/ complete hold before the dog is subdued enough to throw. If so: prowess 6 + wrestling 1 + roll 3 = 10. Massive success?

Re: E5S7 - Somewhere Else - Todd
The pinned foo dog is unceremoniously dead-lifted to Todd's shoulders, then jerked over Todd's head.

Two seconds later it speeds across the room towards its fellow foo dogs.

SLAAAAAAAAM!!!!

Hurling the doggie: coord 6 + roll 3 = 9. Another massive success. If I spend my last tag can I bump the throw into a "two for the price of one" result?
