Of course, the seven eventually succeeded in their quest. It wouldn't be a very good story if they hadn't. Allow me to sum up. The dimension our group of heroes found themselves in had once been populated by a peaceful people.
Raven Cantrell:
“These people called themselves Solrites and they weren’t exactly human but, they were humanoid. Their skin is a kind of copper color, like they have a permanent tan. Their fingers are elongated and their nails have sharp, hardened tips. Not so much like claws. My guess would be that would’ve been something that aided them in digging in the dirt, in an earlier phase of their evolution. This community was mostly farmers. The rituals they performed on this alter all had to do with good harvests and weather. Most Solrites have light colored hair. The dark-haired ones are an anomaly. Their language is reminiscent of Sumerian. Some Solrites could pass for human, especially if they wore gloves."
A female priestess, named Ninti, tried to warn the villagers of their impending doom, but nobody believed her. She was branded a heretic and confined to the
Cave of Regret. It was supposed to be a thirty day sentence. At some point after her banishment the population was wiped out by dozens of vampires. There was one vampire among them that was different -- larger, stronger. He’s the one that carved the C-shaped symbol on the alter before he toppled it over. Ninti managed to survive in the cave for decades until she was freed by our band of seven. She had aged, but other than that she and her pet bird were fine. Unfortunately, shortly after they freed Ninti, the group was attacked by a marauding bunch of vampires. A female vampire, named Sheena, killed the priestess. Dren took out his frustrations by beating one of Sheena's minions to a pulp before dusting him, and tortured Sheena with a little holy water before she too was dusted.
Iona had revealed to the group that she was both a telekinetic and a telepath. Before Sheena was killed, the scientist probed the vampire's mind to learn what she could. Sheena's mate, Rex, was the leader of the vampires and it was he that had carved the symbol on the alter. The vampire's were not indigenous to this dimension.
Iona McLean:
“Cleveland, they came through a Hellmouth in Cleveland. A demon came to their group and made this offer to send them here. To this world. A world of cattle, she called it; One with no Slayer, no crime to speak of, so no army or even a police force. Their nirvana. She does not know the name of the demon.”
"The Solrites developed a protection spell that blanketed the town at night, putting a stop to the vampires' hunt. According to Sheena, Rex asked that other demon for help, the one that had brought them over to this world. The demon tricked one of the Solrites. Then the demon used the magic from their own protection spell to focus its own power. The vampires extinguished the Solrites"
It turned out that Ninti's pet bird was actually the Guardian Orean that they had been sent here to rescue. She had been trapped in the cave all these years with the priestess.
quote:
The bird flew out of the cage and circled the rest area chirping wildly. After a minute, a small light was visible dancing in the sky above the valley. It grew in brightness and size. The movements became less erratic and more fluid. It developed the shape of fairly large wings and a large body mass, about the size of a large horse. The wings made a series of powerful stokes of the air, then banked and turned toward the rest area. As it approached, the head was defiantly reptilian and large. It had four legs and in whole, it looked remarkably like a dragon, with golden-yellow scales. As it approached, the glow again grew slightly brighter as the creature grew smaller in size. It now looked less like a dragon, and more like a person. She alighted on the edge of the clearing as the glowing light faded completely.
She was a young woman, twenty something in appearance, with long yellow hair and bright eyes. She wore what appeared to be a leather dress made of dragon scales, fringed with the feathery down of a canary bird. Fluttering softly on her back was a large set of gossamer wings. She bent slightly at the waist and dipped her head in a birdlike fashion. “Thank you for releasing me. I am Orean, the one you seem to be seeking.”
With Orean's help, they were able to repair the corrupted magic that protected that dimension. The vampires were all destroyed. Time itself seemed to reverse, and it appeared that the Solrites were saved. Perhaps even the priestess Ninti lived, but our heroes would never know for sure. They were immediately transported from that dimension, but not back to the Lord Guardian Gatekeeper, as they had expected.
