Lorcan Rood

=Classic Gamer;8125276:
Name: Lorcan Rood
Race: Human
House: Abhlia
Class: Ranger (Courier)
Physical Description: Unlike many men who have followed the call as couriers, rangers, scouts, and other types of outriders, Lorcan doesn't look as if he has spent the past month living in a hole of dirt beneath the bushes. He doesn't look as if he has been living without the aid of a razor, a hair comb, or a bucket of clean water.

Instead, he looks as well groomed and as precise as a soldier on the parade grounds. His face is clean shaven and his hair is well trimmed and tidy. Lorcan likewise eschews wrapping himself in robes and cloaks with a hood eternally lifted to protect his face against the elements even on a clear spring day in a town full of friendly people unlike some others he has seen do. Perhaps they have something more to hide.

Lorcan prefers clothing that is well-fitted and not only serviceable but neatly pleasing to the eye. His style could be paramilitary, but in a congenial way. His black hair is allowed just enough length to add an element of lushness and his grey eyes often crinkle underneath like a wry smile.

Whenever Lorcan enters an area, it is always with a certain sense of presence. Not in a threatening or overbearing way. But through his body language, in a way that seems confident and capable, without being cocky or bullish. More like a sleek hound who looks ready to play.

Personality:

Lorcan likes to think of himself as generally good natured. Everyone deserves respect until they prove otherwise. Being polite, friendly, and helpful is better than being a stick in the mud. He likes to use what charisma he has to his own advantage, but also just for the pleasure of interacting with people. Whenever someone does manage to get on his bad side, no fate is too vile for them.

  • Personality Trait: There is change upon the wind and I want to influence as much of it as I can.
  • Ideal: Destiny. Nothing and no one can steer me away from my higher calling.
  • Bond: I will prove myself to my family as an adventurer.
  • Flaws: I am not one to spread gossip, but I am always eager for an earful. No, honestly, you were saying... I am particular about my personal space and do not like to feel crowded or closed in upon.

Background:

Within each noble house there are a number of merchant families. This did not automatically make each merchant family one of wealth and fame. Some had only managed to eke out as meager an existence as the cabbage cart peddler at the local city market. Some failed to manage to have it so good and so fell to obscurity. Some managed a level of success that kept them thriving.

The latter happened to be the case for the Roods, a family of horse breeding merchants. They managed to achieve not only respectability, but notoriety as the finest of horse breeders in all of Abhlia. At least some claimed so.

As much as Lorcan loved his family and appreciated a well bred horse, especially those that turned out to be a swift and durable ride, he couldn't help but feel that there was more in the world for him. If not exactly adventuresome, but sometimes exactly that, then something a little more diverse. That may have been part of the reason that he chose to learn carpentry from one of his brothers-in-law.

It would be Lorcan's skills as a carpenter that would be used in later seasons to help out during the floods of Karabahk. Lorcan was able to not only craft some makeshift housing for those whose homes had been ruined by the raging waters, but also to craft some kind rafts and floating crates that helped keep the town from losing even more valuable resources. It was these actions that would cause some people to start looking at Lorcan as something of a folk hero.

It was that little bit of newfound reputation that got Lorcan the job offer as a courier. Once Lorcan hit the open road, the wanderlust took over. One couldn't go everywhere and see everything, but one could try one's best.

[SPOILERBUTTON="Folk Hero"]You come from a humble social rank, but you are destined for so much more. Already the people of your home village regard you as their champion, and your destiny calls you to stand against the tyrants and monsters that threaten the common folk everywhere.

Skill Proficiencies: Animal Handling, Survival
Tool Proficiencies: One type of artisan’s tools (carpenter's tools), vehicles (land)

Defining Event
You previously pursued a simple profession among the peasantry, perhaps as a farmer, miner, servant, shepherd, woodcutter, or gravedigger. But something happened that set you on a different path and marked you for greater things. Choose or randomly determine a defining event that marked you as a hero of the people. *** I saved people during a natural disaster (flood in Karabahk).

Feature: Rustic Hospitality
Since you come from the ranks of the common folk, you fit in among them with ease. You can find a place to hide, rest, or recuperate among other commoners, unless you have shown yourself to be a danger to them. They will shield you from the law or anyone else searching for you, though they will not risk their lives for you.[/SPOILERBUTTON]
Personal Goals:

Lorcan wants to enjoy all the people, places, and things that he discovers through his travels. With all the talk of the Emperor's failing health, and the fact that he has no clear heir, Lorcan senses change on the wind. This could mean that he will finally find himself in a position to determine if he truly has a Destiny to fulfill. He is willing to take some chances to find out just how far he can go in the world and how deep his influence with others can truly go.

Player Goals:

Combat is fun. Social interaction is rewarding. Intrigue is a treasured gem. But the heart of rp is character progression. (Some will swear that it is storytelling. But let there be a whole whirlwind of great story telling around other characters while their character is on a ship waiting, and waiting, and waiting to reach port so they can finally do something. The inward boredom monster will start to grow grumpy.)

A good team dynamic is just as rewarding because characters (and players) feel good when things are progressing for their friends. Especially when they get to experience the ride as well. So it doesn't always have to be about me, me, me. I want to see Lorcan progress, as an individual and as a team member. Much of this may revolve around being able to take advantage of situations as they arise to turn things to the greatest advantage possible. This also might revolve around Lorcan growing personally despite circumstances that aren't generally to his advantage, despite his own shortcomings, or even the shortcomings of the man behind the curtain. It is all about playing the probabilities for all they are worth.

Contacts: List three people who are tied to your character somehow. At least one has to be friendly, and one hostile. More then likely you'll be creating those characters....maybe they'll show up later...

[FIELDSET="Contacts"]
Graethe -  A smuggler from Minia who once conned Lorcan into smuggling for awhile. Graethe thinks that Lorcan smuggled of his own free will and that like everyone else, Lorcan did it because of his own human greed. Graethe also sees Lorcan as weak for leaving behind such a lucrative operation. Lorcan feels that the smuggler duped him and will try to blackmail the courier at some point because of his past. Lorcan is determined to destroy Graethe before Graethe can destroy him.

Connie Canebreak - The Huntress. She wants to make sure Lorcan doesn't become the one who got away. She is a young, ambitious lass from Karabahk who is convinced that by hitching herself to the right man, she will go much farther than her quaint little town. She was there when Lorcan helped during the floods and it was then that she determined that he was the man for her.

Geldwissel aka "Geldy" - From the Copper Crow. A good source of gossip. Geldwissel seems to be the only full time occupant of the tavern in Halland known as the Copper Crow. Not even the owners are seen there as often as Geldy. The half pint of a man (halfling?) can sometimes be found behind the bar pouring up drinks for the customers. He has also been seen helping the lovely ladies deliver trays full of food and drink to tables and acting as bouncer on unruly occasions.

More often than not though, Geldy can be seen crouched over his own mug of ale, quietly (or not so quietly) sharing forth word of "uncommon events" or the latest bit of "strange news." Geldy has taken a liking to Lorcan, and has taken him aside on more than one occasion to share information that he had not been willing to openly share with others.

Secret: Tell me a secret about your character. It can be something they consciously hide or it can be something which they are not aware of themselves. *** Lorcan did a bit of smuggling for awhile. He fears that if it is ever discovered, that his reputation will be ruined. What he doesn't admit to himself is that he partly uses that as an excuse to distance himself from the family business. Lorcan rationalizes to himself that it is for their own protection.

Lorcan again looked down at the letter in his hand with a certain tugging of his heart strings. His younger sister had been trying so hard to get Lorcan to return to Remorsegard and the family business. It seemed that none could understand his desire to become a courier instead.

Father says that now would be a perfect time to return and that he could surely use the help. With the latest news of the Emperor, Father says that every House will be looking for good horse stock from fortifying up their cavalries in case things turn dire, to buying new wagon teams for all the new trade agreements that must sway from one place to another.

Lorcan folded the letter and returned it to his pocket instead of continuing to read the rest for a fourth time. Ole Geldwissel had been correct in his whispering of the latest happenings. With the Emperor gone and no clear heir to take his place, the Empire would be atremble until someone officially sat upon the throne.

Every House among the thirteen would be jockeying for position whether they felt that they could offer up a legitimate candidate of their own, or merely try to position themselves closest to whoever would be the new emperor. It could lead to all out war. The Light send that it not last another two hundred years. The dust hadn't completely settled from the wake of that great conflict.

Even should such conflict be prevented, things would not return to their prior state within the Empire. Now was the time of greatest opportunity known to history, and Lorcan wasn't about to waste it selling horses. As much as he missed his family at times, they would garner just as much wealth in the coming days without him as with him.

In the meantime, information would be flowing across the lands like never before. Lorcan himself might even be courier to some of that information. A well placed ear would keep him privy to even more. And along with that information would come opportunities. Some the likes of which would never again be seen in his lifetime.

No, Lorcan could definitely sense change upon the wind. And that change could very well spell out his very destiny itself. It wouldn't be Remorsegard to which Lorcan sat his sights, but Kyre, and a possible empire on fire.
