Mission 1: Team Where's my Cake, Dude?

(OOC: to keep things simple and to get things rolling ASAP, everyone gets the same first mission. Let's see who can flatten the kobolds in the least amount of rounds!)

The welcome to Phlan was nice enough. A short blonde fellow named Rolf guided you through the city. He showed the major points of interest, as well as pointed out that drinking the polluted sludge of the Stojanow river was unhealthy. You made the acquaintance with the guards at the City Hall, as well as the garrison commander.

The latter introduced himself as Boros of the Red Boar. It was difficult to decide whether he was a halforc or a human - but this is not Hillsfar, and capable people are not asked what race they are. His worn scale armor an silver, perfectly polished axe speak volumes about his experience. Boros leads the merry band of soldiers that are von Urslingen's followers. These number about one hundred and fify, mostly infantry with light armor, polearm and shield. There are twenty elite archers and thirty light cavalry as well.

So Boros shows you around your new home.

The barracks are plenty large to house the garruson as well as your merry band. Its basement doubles as storage area and prison. Currently there is only one prisoner - an enormous brute snoring in the corner cell. The guards seem to avoid going near the cell.

Mercenaries' quarters are in the east wing of the barracks. It is a single big dorm, with eight solid bunk beds and appropriate chests. A fireplace on the inside wall is just waiting for a fire and a nice pot bubbling with stew.

But Boros just laughs. "I guess you'd like to rest and relax a bit? There'll be none of that. Get organized and meet me outside in ten minutes for your first assignment. Or you can run away." He harrumphs, turns around and leaves.

The first assignment sounds easy enough. You are shoved through the gate into the slums area, and told to procure half a dozen kobold heads.

"And don't return empty-handed!" Boros yells before the gate to New Phlan slams shut. The alleyway leading from the wall is narrow; the buildings in the slums are just looted and burnt-out husks. Warily, you advance for a minute or two, getting your bearings.

Someone laughs, up ahead. it is an unpleasant, animalistic sound.

"Meat!" a shrill little voice suddenly screams out. "New meat!" Kobolds stream from a house, bradishing their eating utensils. They scream and chitter madly. "Food! Food! FOOD!"

Caine draws his shortsword while moving at speed from the opening of the slums to the last wall between the kobolds and the party.

OOC:
Caine starts at F-19 and dashes though F-18, F-17, F-16, F-15, F-14,  F-13, F-12, F-11, F-10, F-9, E-8, to D-7 as his move.

His second action will be to wait for something to come within range.

Cursing her short legs (not for the first time) Sharlee careered straight forward before taking a half jink to the right.

"That's the way, Cainey" she said in a quiet voice.  "You leads them onto you and I'll smash their heads in." She grinned evilly at the thought.

With flail in hand, SHarlee Dashes from A19 all the way up to A10 line before diverting to B9.

Entering the area Ra'Mer immediately moves forward and gets to a point he can see one of the kobolds, in fact the bigger of the group.
With shield presented high in the direction of the kobolds Ra'Mer leans back and hurls a javelin at the big guy. Aiming he tries to put all his might into it and get a first kill....
11:24, Today: Ra'Mer rolled 7 using 1d20.  Attack big K.
The javelin flies right over his intended target which elicits a deep growl from the barbarian,
"Grrrrr Rah!!!"

Move from E-19 to C-15

OOC- Rolled 2 rolls back to back and both were 18+ in another game and likely will not need them but WHEN I need it...... 7!

Faire entered the area with her normal, bored expression. Hunting Kobolds? That was their mission? It was rather boorish. Crude even. Not at all suited for a woman like her, for a person who had trained in the arcane arts. Still, that didn't mean that she wouldn't complete the job. After all, she had to start somewhere before beginning her real career. She tapped her staff against the ground and began a low chant, calling upon the arcane powers of the universe. She targeted the nearest kobold. The people in front of her might not matter that much, but they would certainly thank her for extending their boring little lives for a few moments. Rime and frost gathered around the kobold, spiking furiously as she finished the final verse.

So Faire moves to where she can see one of the kobolds for the spell.

In return, the lizardlings rush forward to swarm the nearest opponent. Which would be Caine. The monk is almost buried under madly chittering, stabbing beasts. Their rusty blades finding their marks more often than not.

a1 kobold > c6 HP5/5 AC12 hits for 4 damage.
b1 kobold > d6 HP5/5 AC12 hits for 4 damage
c2 big kobold > c7 HP12/12 AC12 misses.
d3 kobold > c8 HP5/5 AC12 misses.
a5 kobold > d8 HP5/5 AC12 Hits for 3 damage.
b4 kobold > gets hit by a solid ray of frost from Faire, and becomes an icicle. One kobold less.

Things don't look so good for the team.

Sharlee swung her flail at the nearest kobold but it jinked away from her strike.

The barbarian's face reddened with embarrassment.

13:10, Today: Sharlee rolled 8 using 1d20+4.  Attack C8 (with Rage).

My usual dice luck :(

PS IS there a bonus for flanking?  A +2 would give me 10 which just might be a hit.

With Caine being swarmed there is no chance for another javelin throw, instead Ra'Mer throws himself into a rage and runs up to the nearest kobold attacking Caine.
With shield in one hand still Ra'Mer slams his warhammer into the abdomen of the little lizard. Rewarded with what some might consider sickening but Ra'mer is quite satisfied by the sound. Though it is short lived as his rage carries him on to the next or one more strike on this one if it does not fall.

Faire groans a bit as she notices the downed Monk. “Already? Come on…” She mutters under her breath. It seemed that idiots weren’t very hard to come by this early in an adventuring career. It was just like her teacher had told her. Still, he knew that she needed to do something quickly if she wanted for them to win the fight and for everyone to survive this. She normally liked to conserve her larger spells, but she supposed it was time to call upon the powers of the first level of magic. She spoke the words and incantations, making a symbol in the air in front of her with the staff she held. The power came out as a series of insidious whispers among the kobolds, bidding them to go to sleep.

OOC: 28 “Damage” From the Spell. The first 5 kobolds that fail their saves (I believe there is a save but am away from my PHB at the moment) Will fall asleep.

c9 kobold goes splat, Ra'Mer's warhammer rupturing several important internal organs.

The mighty magical spell Faire casts is enough to put all the remaining kobolds to sleep. They collapse like marionettes whose strings have been cut in mid-motion.

(yes, all - they have 27 HP total combined, and her spell affects 28 HP worth of creatures, with no saving throw.)

Everything is eerily quiet.

And we’re supposed to bring the heads <i>back<i>, remember? “ She looked over to the monk and frowned. ”Wish we had a cleric. Then you might have gotten out of that conscious.” She yawned and looked over to the Kobolds. ”A sack may be a good idea. I’m not putting those heads in my backpack.”  She rubbed her forehead with her palm. “I swear this is barbaric. Surely there’s better proof of their demise. She sighed before shrugging. “One of you can go ahead and slit their throats. I think I’ve contributed enough for this battle.” She went back to idly inspecting her fingernails for the moment.

Sharlee looked a little disgruntled at not being able to smash a few heads in but made it up by slitting the remaining throats.

She unpicked a few strands from her jerkin and twisted them into twine.  Then looped the twine through the nostrils of a couple of the kobolds and fastened them to a javelin.  This she hefted over her shoulder as a carrying pole.

"We right then?"

Ra'Mer had no issue assisting in taking the heads of the kobolds, so with a shrug of his shoulders he draws his handaxe. Sharp as his axe is it takes a few good whacks to cuts through the little lizards leathery skin and neck bones offer some resistance. Luckily his experience in the wilds taught him to avoid most of the blood splatter.
"We are good.....they are not so good."
Finishing up he hands the head(s) he collects to Sharlee to string up for easy carrying, eying her with some approval.

You didn't think you'd get off that easily, did you? A figure shimmers on the northern end of the bloodbath alley, indistinct and floating a few inches off the floor. It appears to be a large and muscular man, bald, clad in the sort of simple garb a dock worker might wear. His forearms and wrists seem wrapped with rope. He watches you, arms crossed over on his chest, and shakes his head disapprovingly. The motion making his head seems slightly indistinct.

While there is no sound coming from him, you can feel the temperature drop. Or is it just the chill of encountering something unknown?

Faire gulps a little bit and narrows her eyes at the strange creature in front of her. What in the world was going on here? None of this made any sense? Was that a ghost? Some other spirit? She couldn't be sure, but for the moment she thought about ghosts, and how best to deal with them. She had been trained officially in a great deal of academic matters, especially those related to magic and the supernatural. Ghosts were not, as many thought, some terrifying, inscrutable beings. They were as understandable as anything else. Thus, logic dictated that if she remembered what she knew, she might be able to figure out a way out of this.

That being said...logic also dictated that staying away from scary ghosts was a good idea. She decided to beat a steady retreat, keeping a hand on her staff.

The javelin flies true though he does not know what its effect it might have if it was a ghost, he had never encountered one before this. Hitting it in its left arm in such a fashion it would have killed a lesser being.

The javelin passes right through the indistinct creature, leaving a swirl behind, and buries itself in the wall behind it with considerable force. The creature seems to smile and rushes forward, towards the closest living thing, which happens to be a perky lil halfling. Sharlee grunts and smites upwards with its flail as it rushes towards her, catching it in the legs - but the heavy weapon passes through the thing as if it were a dustcloud, leaving her a bit off-balanced. In return, the thing hisses soundlessly and claws at the pesky halfling, managing to miss quite horribly. Perhaps she was just too short for him?

Faire grunted and winced a little bit as she remembered more about the ghosts. She needed to handle the ghost, and at this rate she was the only one who could handle it. She wished that they had a cleric in their group. They may have been superstitious fools sometimes, but divine magic was far more effective on ghosts and the undead. Still she knew that magic in general was far more effective than mundane arms. She spoke aloud. ”It’s a ghost! Mundane arms can’t hurt it you blasted idiots!” She shouted for the moment. She needed to increase her defense before she could continue however. She closed her eyes and muttered more words of power, the tension in the air rising around her until it manifested in some strange shimmering aura around her. Soon enough she would attempt her magic. She was unsure if her own magic would work...but it was their best shot.

Faire thought of defense and guilt-assignment first.

Sharlee and Ra'mer both miss with their attacks. Ra'mer had to step forward a bit to reach with his warhammer.

The figure (AC12 HP8/22) lashes out towards the nearest enemy, which happens to be Sharlee. It seems to punch and grab, and even though it's in slow motion, it still connects with Sharlee's  shoulder. Futilely Ra'Mer swings again and again at this misty looking creature to no avail, completely missing it in this attempt. With the suggestion that magic might prove better he looks around to see where their caster is.
"Are you with us mage? Once it goes through us you are next."

The mage frowned a bit at her fellow warriors, especially as they seemed to be angry at her. Why would they be just since she was pointing out something so obvious? It was a ridiculous notion. Regardless, she had more important things to do anyway. She tapped her staff against the ground and clutched it as she spoke a few words in the tongue of magic. To most people it would have likely been babble, but the universe understood that meant it was time for the laws of physics to shut up and sit down. A small ball of fire appeared at the top of the staff before flying towards the ghost in a bolt of force.

Casting Firebolt: Dmg = 3 :^(

10:22, Today: Faire rolled 21 using 1d20+5 ((16)).

Sharlee might be barbaric but she wasn't stupid.  Taking advantage of the flash of Faire's fireball she dodged away from the unhittable creature.

Disengage.  Move to A11

Sorry for delay; been away.

Caine's dart passes clean through the shadowy creature, barely disturbing its form.

Faire's fireball attack fares little better, tho it does manage to light up the cold darkness clinging to the creature. It flinches at the touch of hot flames, and stares at her with infinite hatred in its indistinct eyes.

Sharlee retreats hastily (but in good order) as Ra'mer tries to connect with the foe.

The figure (AC12 HP3/22) is torn for a second between continuing the assault, and retreating to regroup and plan its revenge. Finally it opts for the latter. Despite seeming to move in slow motion, it manages to slip out and through the northern wall before anyone can bat an eyelash.

XP> 125 for the kobolds, 100 for the specter
Treasure> 90 cp from the kobolds, four slings (1 cp each), four rusty daggers (worhless)
Ten coppers for each kobold head awarded on return to new Phlan and putting the heads in the collection basket.
I assume you will move back to the barracks thread for R&R.
