You would think that for a Ravenloft game, you could just go pull people in from other games whether they wanted to or not.  Maybe Jase can do something about that.

Wait.. they said yes?  Do we even want the kinds of people who would come here willingly around?  I think you should try again.

Saeko - all we need is your username ... <fiendish GM grin>

No!  Never!  I swear upon my honor, that, you shall never have!

...I mean, you've known it for, what, seven years now?  And Caesius, he knows it - he gets a little bit ill every time I'm right on a public forum, which I have to say, happens a lot.  I stay away from the public forums mostly because I worry about his health.  And I suppose all anybody else would have to do if they wanted it would be to send me an Rmail that somehow enticed me to write back.  I'd suggest they wait, like, a week or so, though - I'm wary now.

Which all sounds about right for an oath on my honor.  I stand by it.

Have you considered someone rogue-like?  I don't mean filled with procedurally generated dungeons, although that sounds like a cool Prestige class.  I'm just not sure we have anyone yet.

I love playing rogues, but my idea kind of got...sidetracked, then fell apart.  First it went non-rogue-ish, then into odd territory, then I realized it wasn't working at all and kaboomel.

Ravenloft is working its evil on me already, it appears.

I shall consider a rogue-ish sort.  I wish I still had my Book of Magic.  Had a 'wears mask to get abilities' Prestige Class I REALLY liked.

But I turfed all of my 3.5 stuff loooong ago - didn't think I'd ever use it again!  ;_;

I just picked up a set of the "Complete..." books for cheap! (Probably not yours.)  I remember that one...  it looked neat.  Um... the Master of Masks, in the Complete Scoundrel?

The pre-requisites were 8 Ranks in Bluff, Disguise, and Perform, and at least four languages, so it should be possible to qualify in time for level 6.  It looks crazy complicated, but if you want, I could make some time to type it up for you?

Lucky me!  No need to type it out, Saeko.  And if you did get my books, I'd be happy!

Now I just need to figure out what kind of character class.  Seems ready-made for Bards, but I dislike the singing thing...

...I made it for a Warlock, once.  Must look that up.

Just a couple of char sheets to go, so hoping to get organised and start you on your first faltering steps this weekend.  Why yes, you do all meet in a tavern.  An oldie but a goodie.  Besides, that's what the module says happens, so there.

No, I can't see where it says "and then the tavern catches fire" ... why do you ask ?

But you should probably intervene if random strangers, for example, start burning down a bar because the ale is poor, right?  :D

Seems the lawful good, paladiny thing to do, unless the ale is actually poisonous, in which case the lawful good, paladiny thing to do would be to burn down the bar yourself.  ^_^

In other news, I've given up on making a complicated character and am just working on a bog-standard Rogue - it'll help get the game started quicker, and I understand we need one.  ^_^

Seriously, though, Violet, don't feel rushed!  At least, not on our accounts.  I mean, eager to start the game?  Yes, of course.  In a hurry to get to Ravenloft?  Um.  So these things balance out.

Hi, Qvar!  Welcome!  I have to admit, now I'm deeply curious what makes Qvar so complicated. (Qvomplicated?  OK, now I'm just making trouble.)  That's a fantastic portrait for a Pelorestrian, though, I must say!

Horrible week - I'm now doing 3 jobs at work (if anyone mentions the Stooges, I'll set, um Arafarafarfa on them !) and cars trouble (one dead battery, on with a bright and shiny Engine Warning Light) ... but still here, and still hopeful of starting !

Just got to answer any questions, give char sheets the once over and throw you all in the deep end (hope the recent flooding in Barovia that makes this game now an aquatic adventure won't wreck anyone's build ... <grrrins>, no, not really).

On the plus side, I have finished the map and the first bit is simply getting you into the tavern to meet and greet.

Yes, meeting in the tavern does sound like the start of a joke.  Is it just me, or does anyone else think Eomer leaves us hanging in LOTR: the Two Towers when he says "What business does an elf, a man and a dwarf have in the Riddermark?"  I'm still waiting for the bazinga !

A well-rounded party ?  Hope those Weight stats reflect that ...  ;>

Apparently, the answer wasn't "funny business."

Sorry you're having such a bad week!  I hope things get better.  Car troubles are like... my third least favorite kind of trouble.  Maybe fourth, actually.  Maybe I'm overthinking it.  Maybe I should add, "Overthinking things troubles" to my list somewhere.  Do you suppose that would help?  Anyway, don't worry about us!  If we can wait for Qvar, I'm sure we can wait for you.

...Actually, even if we couldn't wait for Qvar, I'm pretty sure we'd make an exception in your case.  I mean, what choice would we have, really?

Thanks!  :D  Sometimes it works out.

I detest when other people write stuff my character does in their posts - reactions to things, for examples - that I did not, myself, write in my own post.  So, even when it's a mistake on my part rather than deliberate, I will always change when I find I have ascribed something to a character that has not been written or seriously implied in that character's own post.

You'd have my blessing.

quote:

I'd been thinking about it, like, earlier, with Saeko.  In some ways it's a little weird establishing different cultures, yet still all speaking Common.  I don't particularly have a language on Saeko's sheet that matches up with those things she says that are nonsense to the rest of you, but so much of her flavor would be lost if I just kept those all as English.

Honestly I don't know if I kind of figure she really does have an extra language that just isn't relevant to anything, or that Common just has some very wide-ranging `dialects' across the dimensions.  I suppose I lean towards the latter.  Her culture, for whatever reason, just has seriously different rules for proper nouns, but almost everything else is the same.  Maybe their names are based on an old language, otherwise dead and forgotten.  And since her Common is otherwise kind of built on that, it may still bleed in as some odd phrasings here and there, but for the most part... just names.

Which is why it's really cool to see someone like Arafarafarfa, who has really taken it and made Common a second language.  I suppose it could be irritating if it happened too often (like, I'm glad I didn't do that with Saeko - and I had considered it when I was first writing her up - because two of us in one game would be a bit much, I think, and Arafarafarfa just does it so very well.)  But since I don't see it often, I think it's awesome.

...Anyway.  Bergermeister seems like a pretty localized term IRL, and clearly not her locality, so as happy as she generally seems to be to correct people, she won't be handling this one.  Her best guess is that it's someone who sprays just a little bit of water on `bergers', which are maybe some sort of flower?  She'd be the first to admit it's not a very good guess.

Well, hey now!  First you begged to differ, and then you just went right ahead and differed without waiting for permission?  You are in so much trouble.

Secondly, I used to have a pressure cooker, and the food did not come out crushed, so clearly pressure and crushing are totally unrelated, ipso facto, gaudeamus igitur, ut proverbium loquitur vetus.

But thirdly, I second Violet, and... why do I suddenly feel like I'm counting down?  Does anybody else hear ticking?

Lol!

Saeko's old pressure cooker would impart an equal pressure in all directions upon its contents.  'Food' is usually a fluid, or permeable to pressure, therefore the pressure within the food is equal to the pressure inside the cooker.  So, whilst the food does experience pressure, it does not get crushed.  Crushing implies the pressure is acting in one direction only, eg downwards.  In regard to the anticipation of a less-than-triumphant return one may say: It's crushing... No balancing pressure is to be expected.

That reaction to the fireball was just... wow!  I'm like, actively impressed by everyone's characters in this, they're all amazing and wonderfully written, but I think Violet might be my favorite character concept... ever?  Quite possibly?  I won't say there isn't some good competition, but she's absolutely brilliant.  I adore her, and I am so happy I get to be in the game that has her.  Thank you.

I'm finding the characters from a mishmash of settings to be very encouraging when it comes to posting.  Cultural issues, and so forth.  I'm looking forward to seeing more of Saeko, herself.  ^_^

And I feel that the overall quality of posting in this game is quite high.  :D

PC deaths when they're being NPCd are always so wonderfully tragic.  There is just sufficient time for those regret-filled last words, and a final realisation of Awful Truths™ that are, somehow, only partially articulated before the last rattling breath (or scream of anguish) as the soul is torn, brutally, from the body and borne down into the most terrible pits of the Underworld.

Just so beautiful...  :)

One of those weeks - migraine for me for starters, and my wife fell while out jogging, and failed to catch herself as she went over, so hit the ground hard and badly grazed/bruised ... seen the doctor and it's possible she's fractured her arm, though he's thinking not on balance - but if the pain's not gone in a week it's off for x-rays.

Re: Ravenloft - OOC Chat #1

Alas, no, despite all the good wishes ... she must have failed a DC check somewhere.

Pain kept coming and going, so back to doctor and dutifully sent off for x-rays ... got them taken (imaging dept is part of the regional hospital), and immediately ordered down to the emergency department so they could immobilise the arm.  Turns out that it is a fracture - the good news is that it's sitting in pretty much the correct spot, the bad news is that it's an 'avulsion' which means every time she moves the arm the ligament attached to the bone pulls the fracture open.  Hence they immobilised the arm.

Immediate referral to the specialist ... who we see tomorrow morning - I guess they tell us whether immobilisation is working or whether they'll have to pin it - time for a Luck roll !

In the meantime, I've been learning to cook (it was either that or we perished from hunger).  My wife can't help, obviously, but has been giving me excellent step by step instructions and it's so far so good ...

... so that's my excuse for not posting an update here !  Maybe tomorrow if all goes well.  :>

I was going to express surprise that there is a "correct place" to have a fracture, until I realised that obviously there is.  The correct place to have a fracture is in a hospital, where help is easily available.

I hope all goes well from now on, and that you both survive your cooking.

Re: Ravenloft - OOC Chat #1

To summarise - "so far so good".  Apparently they don't use the word 'better' at this stage, the best they can say is 'no worse', but since the bit of bone that moves is 99% where it's supposed to be, we continue on.  At this point the bone is what they are happy to call "sticky" which sounds suitably gruesome and I'm sure I can use that in game, but it means it's just starting to knit together ... so my wife's arm is to remain immobilised until we seek the specialist again in 4 weeks at which point judgment will be made - either it worked out or they'll go for surgery.  My job is to stop my wife doing anything that will cause them to pick option b.  I think that DC is one of those imaginary numbers ...

So now we have to survive another 4 weeks of my cooking !  :>  Today we had vegetable fritters (my wife gets to pick the menu, I just follow direction), but that's basically just a lot of grating - the fritters even cooked on a tray in the oven.

And at last you'll get your IC update ... (not yet, Caesius ! not yet !  Give me a chance to write it !)

Aaand back again with the latest in what seems to be a chain of medical disaster.  Spoiler alert - all ends well.  :>

One of those phone calls from my youngest sister, slightly more startling because this time it didn't begin with her customary "don't panic".

To cut a long story short, my Mum had a stroke, rushed to hospital, they found two blood clots on the brain, got medicated ... and by some miracle of modern medicine is now back to normal - no physical defecits, no mental deficits (she was struggling to find words to start with and was slow to respond conversationally, but that seems to have cleared up now).

Doctors are suddenly very interested in running all manner of tests on Mum's heart to determine the underlying cause (she suffers from high blood pressure), so just keeping fingers crossed that turn out well - though there didn't seem to by much urgency in it ("come back in 4-6 weeks"), so doesn't look like that's an immediate problem anyway.

And now, I shall go see what your characters have been up to ... ;>

And I'm REAAALLY late getting in here to say I'm glad to hear that thing proceeded, well, as best possible in that situation.  Amazing and fantastic that your mother came out of that okay, and I hope that trend continues!  :D

On my side, we've been very concerned about a health issue; it could still be something very serious, but all signs are at least pointing toward 'no'.  Thank goodness.

My Mum's back to normal - and back and forth to doctor to juggle high blood pressure medication as they go through the usual process to work out what works best, so continuing well on that front.

Sorry to hear you've got health problems of your own - certainly hope it all turns out well.

Sounds highly difficult!  :(  Getting medical aid and going through all of the procedures can be very distressing these days, even when it helps.

Things are improving slowly, here.  So far, so good.  Don't know about the magic 8 ball - that thing has always disliked me!  ^_^

Also, I keep totally thinking I did this but apparently I haven't.  I'm going on a trip in about a week - actually going out of the country!  I've never actually done that before, so am super excited.  But I'm going to be Highly Unreliable for like the next... month and a half, possibly?  Like, I'm already a little overwhelmed just getting ready (but fortunately, having chunks of my shoulder ripped out by horrors from beyond the grave is a nice mental break!), but I'm told wi-fi is "spotty" where we're going and I don't know what "spotty" means in this context.

But I, too, have consulted the Magic 8 Ball, and when I asked it how this was going to go it exploded and all the pieces ran away screaming.  As with all Magic 8 Ball answers it's open to interpretation, but I'm pretty sure that's good!

...also, I'm just going to assume the GMs of my games who are also around here will see this.  Especially since two of you are also the GM of this game. grin

Spotty wifi means that they won't be held liable when you can't get a signal in an emergency.  Such as exciting weather.  F'rinstance.  ;>

On the plus side, other countries are, for the most part, free from horrors from beyond the grave that try to bite you (or at least they tend not to mention them in the adverts).  Just eat lots of garlic and carry a variety of holy symbols, just to be on the safe side.  Tickets, passports, money, Holy Water, repeating crossbow, the usual tourist mantra ...

And the Travel Bug really isn't what you think.

But seriously, have a really nice time out there, relax and enjoy yourself.  :>

As Lord Farquaad said, "Some of you may die, but it's a sacrifice I am willing to make."  ;o)

Level 2 spells Consecrate and Desecrate have durations of 2 hours per level, as Qvar would know better than Zertin. Level 5 spells Hallow and Unhallow are long term, with an associated spell effect that lasts for a year. How high is your spellcraft skill? (DC 20+spell level to identify a spell that is already in place.)

Zertin will try a spellcraft check after he's finished detecting magic but I'm not sure if a wizard would be able to identify divine/profane spells that way. The rules don't seem to distinguish between arcane vs divine spellcraft checks.

We can always come back tomorrow and see if the evil aura has dissipated?

Should clarify, I thought Saeko was moving to the north - past Zertin, to the singing one, not next to Caesius.  She thought Qvar and Caesius could handle the two down there, assuming that if she could resist the song then surely both of the holy ones could, and wanted to protect Violet and Zertin from the other one.

I don't know if that would change Qvar's choices or not, but I can see where it might.

See?  A little dab of whipped cream would just make that, um... former Senator Al Franken, perhaps? ..impression so much better!

've been absent for a week, at least.  :(  Sorry about that.

1.  My beloved Uncle passed on two weeks ago.  Not from Corona, but Parkinson's and pneumonia.
2.  My Mother in Law, with whom we had a difficult (read, abusive) relationship, passed on last Friday from Coronavirus.

Emotions have been fraught.

I'm going to try to get back into some kind of schedule.

Re: Ravenloft - OOC Chat #1

Tens of apologies ... spent a lot of the past week sorting out a mess of old tech in my study which ate most of my free time.

Decided I probably don't need all those old boxes for annual software subscriptions going back half a dozen years, nor are the seven mobile phones of much use (2 broken, 5 no longer compatible with the Oz phone networks) - but luckily I can recycle them.

Four old ADSL modems (two internal, two external) aren't going to come back in fashion, particularly as I don't have a landline nowdays, and the least said about the 3 broken laptop power bricks the better.

As for the cables ... at least there were no serial or parallel in the mad tangle, but I don't have anything to plug the SCART or Thin Ethernet ones into, and I only need one phone cable now to plug into VOIP, not the couple of dozen I found.

There's one cable that I just couldn't identify (and this after recognising a DIN plug to 4 x RCA converter which I can't ever have used) ... best guess is that it might have been an extension for a joystick for my long gone Amiga.  That's what I'm going with, anyway.

The good news is I don't have as many USB cables as I'd feared !  I was getting worried they were breeding back there ...

One of the closets in the spare bedroom is filled with boxes of obsolete hardware - old monitors, floppy disk drives, hard drives with less storage capacity than a CD, unreliable USB hubs...

I'm telling you... when the Singularity happens, and the AIs take over the world, humans will go back to using all that stuff because a computer with all that old hardware will not be able to support the AIs, and will not be infested by them.

Salvation for the Human Race lies with the Commodore 64 and the original Playstation!

Re: Ravenloft - OOC Chat #1

Ah, the good old days. One year at high school I had to do my exams with a slide rule. The next year technology had advanced so quickly we were allowed to use a calculator.

Then at university one of my courses involved using punch cards to input lines of Fortran computer programming - one card per line of the computer program - and come back the next day to check the result. I never did get that program to run all the way through.

I never did own a Commodore 64, but I did invest in a Commodore 128 a couple of years behind the craze. That was about the same time that I discovered the typists at work could type faster than their word processors could read the key strokes - when the word processor just started to beep at every keystroke the typist would pause and let the machine catch up.

So many changes in just half a lifetime. ;o)

LOL - I can't remember how to use a slide rule either. Nor logarithmic tables.

BIOS from the original Greek then !  ;>

I know I bought our laptop in August 2007 and that still works and runs Windows 10, albeit the battery won't hold much charge anymore (half an hour tops) and it's on its third power brick.

Meh, if it ain't broke then break it then it'll do until it does break.  I do recall how much I hate setting up, reinstalling programs and transferring files on a new computer though - must be writ in our DNA !  :>

Apologies for recent absence -  just a spot of redecorating that got out of hand and spread to most of the house before we got it back under control, then my wife came down with her second dose of Shingles which necessitated a trip to the Emergency Dept ... only cos there were no doctors available and you have to start taking the anti-virals within 48 hours which she did and so far so good ... THEN several days of intensive yardwork (as I believe it's known in the US), ostensibly in preparation for a termite inspection/treatment (purely precautionary, thankfully no activity found).  So busy, busy, busy !!  ;>

Deja-vu again !

My wife and I made the mistake of deciding to rationalise and standardise all our online logins ... and that took an awful lot longer than we thought possible - down to just the last couple now that require support to weigh in.

And then I sliced the top off my thumb while trying to chop up an apple.  So much for a healthy snack !  When it eventually stopped bleeding determined it wasn't terribly serious, but I've had it bandaged up for about a week and was trying not to use it - the good news is that when all the dressings came off this morning it's looking a lot better.  Still sore, but I can type OK.  :>

Apparently I'm just following in my father's footsteps - he's taken the tops off three fingers now on separate occasions, all more spectacularly so than my little effort, and requiring various degrees of medical intervention to heal.  I don't want to go there ...

Sooo ... back now !   :>

Re: Ravenloft - OOC Chat #1

Apologies for my absence (and to those who've already read this saga in my other games) - been fighting strenuously with our pool for the last three or four weeks ...

I already knew the chlorinator had given up (for those not in the know, that's the thing that converts salt to chlorine to keep the pool sanitised), but figured I could deal with the algae build up when I replaced it ... then the pool cover (which you need to stop water evaporating) reached its use by date as I noticed it was so brittle a part of it had broken off leaving a small opening.  THEN the pool started to smell.  Bad.  Soooo ...

We carefully pulled the old cover off, bundled it up and threw it over by the trailer to go to the tip ... to reveal the month-old corpse of a kangaroo.  THAT took some fishing out and after a month in the water was about as pleasant as you can imagine (rubber gloves and face masks were the order of the day), but we managed it eventually.

Then came the juggling act of trying to thoroughly clean the pool and get the chemicals back in balance.  Part way through THAT process the pool pump decided it had had enough too.  So that's a new chlorinator, pool pump and cover, plus an awful lot of chemicals ...

A lot of time and money later, and the pool is still a bit green, but today for the first time I'm actually registering chlorine in the water, which bodes well - I'll keep throwing the 'shock' quantities of chlorine in there by hand until it gets back into kilter, then I can hook the new chlorinator up and let it take over the job.  So we're finally in danger of getting there !  :>

The moral of the tale is ... next time we move we definitely don't want a pool !  <grins>

Now where were we ...

Absolutely ! <grins>  We're on 13 acres and the house/garden bit is about 1¼ acres of that.  Nice to see them out in the paddocks, though.

Been here 16 years, and this is the first time any animal bigger than a lizard has fallen in the pool - and we've had escaped sheep belonging to our neighbors (including a flock of 'em once - about 20 in total) come up the drive and wander happily around the house/gardens before now.

Welcome back, V. :)

Skald, I don't envy you that experience. I have had the pleasure of being a pool-owner - it was great when the kids were young but in the end I spent more time cleaning it than swimming in it. I once had to check the neighbours' backyards to find where our pool cover had blown off to during a storm. But a dead kangaroo in the pool? That's next level stuff!

Re: Ravenloft - OOC Chat #1

Pleased you're back with us and doing better, Violet !  :>

Our pool is stubbornly refusing to get well - I've got PH right, but Total Alkaline is still high, and Total Chlorine is good, but Free Chlorine is still not registering ... and while the water is much less green, it's still cloudy, despite all the clarifiers, phosphate killers, and algaecide we've been throwing in.

Also, our cleaning equipment keeps breaking - both the vacuum brush and heavy duty vacuum head seem to have suffered from plastic rot (on reflection, keeping them out in the sun, not used, for 10 months might not have been the best plan).  Need to buy replacements next time I'm at the hardware store.

So ... I think we're at the stage where we need Qvar to Bless it.  Or maybe an exorcism !

Ah, I've no doubt we'll get there eventually, but suspect summer might be over before that happy day ! <ROFL>

I would like to see deer out in the paddocks, though !  :>

Re: Ravenloft - OOC Chat #1

And back !   Sorry about that ... again !

Big storm blew through the regions Tues PM doing a fair bit of damage (luckily we were fine on that front) ... and not only taking out the power for three days, but also taking phone and internet down with it !   Weather was on the warm side at 40+ centigrade which didn't help.  Luckily the power came back on before the generator ran out of fuel, but phone took a bit longer and internet another day.

Of course, by then all my computers were screaming at me because the internet security software had expired and with the outages I hadn't been able to update them ... so I've been working on that (just the 8 devices between us, now 7 cos my tablet had developed the dreaded battery bulge, though THAT then meant I had to wipe it).

Hopefully that's all behind us now ... though we do have a planned outage on Wednesday (some infrastructure work in the vicinity) so fingers crossed that doesn't go pear-shaped !!  :>

Pool ... is actually looking a bit better, so seems some of Qvar's prayers were answered (the connection between the Demiplane of Dread and Elsyium might be a bit patchy).  Finally registered free chlorine, so was able to hook up the new chlorinator and put the cover on ... alas chlorine levels nosedived again in the power outage, so I'm trying to get them back up again, but at least it all looks good and my wife bravely went for a swim and hasn't developed any curses yet, so it might be properly exorcised now.  <grrrins>

So, situation fairly normal for round here !  ;P

Nooo ... that's level 8 now !  Level 7 was earned way back at msg #257 in this thread.  So anyone still on level 6 gets two levels !  Huzzah2  ;>

Except Saeko, cos Qvar killed her she died in mysterious circumstances which we will never speak of again.

Okay, done.  My saves were 2 levels behind….

Do we get a stat increase?  Not that it matters right now.

Yes stat increase at character level 8 ... more Charisma for Q ;-)

Q level up complete too.  He can now cast Daylight at will, so expect gratuitous usage to light up Castle Ravenloft like party night!

So have I !  And I'm just about to be AFK for 4 days, though I doubt anyone will notice as that's well withing my normally scheduled updates (yes, they are planned ... maybe ... they're not, not planned).  :P

Hope stuff is improving for you now ... we're definitely glad to have you back again, but don't worry - we're happy to look after Violet if you can't make it on, and to just enjoy it when you can.  :>

Re: Ravenloft - OOC Chat #1

I can see we’re entering into the quadratic spellcaster/linear fighter area of 3.5 (I mean, we were in that area before, but we’re approaching level 9 and 5th level spells).

Compounded by the usual PbP issues of ‘rapid-growth compared to exploration/finding magic items’ and spell-dumping.

…this is not a comment on this game, it’s a 3.x thing in general.  ^_^

Has 5e managed to solve this kind of thing?  I’m curious, and I’m sure some people here have some 5e experience.

Re: Ravenloft - OOC Chat #1

Yeah, thankfully Mental Health became a 'thing' not too long ago.

I'm almost afraid to look at the game thread now !  You're not supposed to kill each other !   That's what the monsters are for !!!  <grrins>

I prefer the term CvC ie Character vs Character, as opposed to Player vs Player - I don't mind at all if actions are entirely within Character, as long as the Players are having fun with it.  :>

Have had only minimal experience of 5e - got as far as rolling up a 1st level character and our first combat, but the game folded at that point and haven't found another since (to be fair I haven't been looking as I picked up another 3.5 game instead), so I don't know how the game mechanic unfolds at mid-high levels.   Though I've never had a problem with 3.x mechanism - my Fighter types still seem to find plenty to do.  :>

Re: Ravenloft - OOC Chat #1

PvP out of familiarity, nothing more.  :)  People who play with me know it's something I avoid when it's not character-breaking to do so.

So, none of the following is a critique of this game or anything, I'm just talking game design and rules issues, which is something I enjoy doing.  ^_^

I recall a podcast a friend shared with me, with an interview with one of the developers of 3.x.  The discussion was about the linear fighter/quadratic mage issue (which was acknowledged as a real thing by the designer).  The developer explained that 3.x was callibrated with the idea of '4 combat encounters a day' (which might seem like a lot, but...dungeons...).  So a mage could, if they desired, use their best stuff in the first fight...but be less and less effective as the day wore on.  So conservation and some tactical choices was the key.

However, once people get into more serious roleplaying than 'kill things and take their stuff', I notice that the 4 encounters a day tends to go out the window.

That's when what I refer to as spelldump takes place.  The mage is far more likely to simply blow through their best stuff when an encounter happens.  No fault to them, it makes sense (in character and out of character).  And without the conservation of resources being necessary, it's not a problem.  Combine that with the issue of 'mages become more and more effective than fighters/rogues as the levels go up' and it ends up with the fighters and rogues getting a little sidelined.

This can become even more exaggerated on PbP games, where there are often lengthily periods between fights.  ^_^  Often the fights aren't 'random encounters' (fights take so long on PbP that GM's tend not to push them too much) - they're storyline stuff, so they come up less frequently.

Toss onto that the lack of magic items in PbP games - this is something I've noticed - and it becomes even MORE exaggerated.

Nobody wants what used to be called a Monty Haul game, where people are festooned with magic items like a Christmas tree.  There's even a trend toward having 'low magic campaigns', where people are supposed to survive on their wits and skills.  I love that idea, myself (there's a reason I prefer Anima to D&D).

But D&D was designed with magic items in mind.  Take them away, or drastically reduce their frequency, and you end up with fifth and sixth level fighters swinging away at enemies they can't really hurt very well any more, while mages are fireballing and lightning-bolting (and succeeding).  You end up with higher-level characters with the same armor class as they had three-four levels ago, which doesn't hurt the mages as much but REALLY hurts everyone else.  The fighters are using weapons that aren't growing as much in damage or ability while the mages...well, you get the idea.

Lack of magic items would be a bigger problem for mages, as well if they had to conserve resources…but if they don't, spelldump takes care of that issue very nicely.  ^_^

All of which can add up to the non-casters being significantly less functional in fights than the casters.  NOT a GM problem, not a player problem.  It's a design problem (all games have issues of some kind or another).  And often it's not that important - these days, I tend to make up characters for 3.5 games without any care for them being super-effective because I know there are going to be characters in the group who are (if I cared for that, Violet would have been VERY differently made/set-up, and likely have branched into some kind of prestige class by this point).

I'm in it for the RP, really.  ^_^

Violet:

Me too !  I love making characters, though I'd be the first to admit I'm fairly awful at maximising a build - I always go for Skills/Feats that feel right for the character but are probably not the best move tactically.  But I never mind if my character isn't up there with the others, as long as I'm having fun with them. <grins>

Magic Items ... actually, since this adventure is a fairly direct 3.5 conversion of a 2nd Ed module, there's treasure to be found, though you might have to take it off the current owner once you've finished hitting them.  ;>

And I've just been browsing the 5e PHB - superficially (ie I didn't study it for long) ... seems only Fighters can advance to third and fourth attacks per round now (though Monks, Rangers and Paladins get a second attack, as warrior types), while Wizards get lower level spells earlier, but less spells of each spell level at higher character levels (just the 1 x 9th level spell at 20th level), so looks like they did try to address the quadratic/linear thing.

Re: Ravenloft - OOC Chat #1

I'm pretty good at maximizing, but that'll depend on the game system.  :)  And the maximization has to fit the character, if you get my drift.  I draw a firm line at powergaming.  But it's fairly logical for a character - themselves! - to try to maximize their strengths, especially if their lives might depend on said things.

We're not used to that, given our society.  At least one hopes so.  :)

For magic items here, I'm not much concerned.  We have a three people with turn undead, we have a bunch of spellcasters, and some very capable fighter-types.  Me and my +1 bow will do.  ^_^  Again, my comments were only observational, not a critique of this particular game; it's a thing in 3.x that this issue exists.

Sounds like they HAVE improved things somewhat in 5e.  Curious to see how Rogues stack up.  I'm sure there's an SRD out there somewhere...

Hm.

*checks*  If I'm reading an official SRD...sounds like sneak attack is made easier to pull off, which is a start.  Just need advantage (or someone in melee with the target).  No range max with ranged attacks.  Nice.  Uncanny dodge is waaaaay better than before.  Sense invisibility, automatically 'take 10 as minimum for a roll' for skills, that's good for a skill monkey type.  Plus various archetype bonuses (checks them out), and there are some interesting things there.

...I'm playing Baldur's Gate sometimes, so that's showing me a little more as well.

It's a little disappointing that we've lost prestige classes.  I know they got out of hand, but at the same time they were a strong point of 3.x for me.  :)  The 'must follow this series of abilities' issue with classes has always been a little bugbear for me; I'm glad there's a shift MORE towards customization, but even now it's a 'customize using THESE rigid frameworks' thing, rather than a fully 'hey, make up your own abilities!' kind of thing.

Which is tricky to do, of course, but some games manage it.

In general, I'm liking what I'm seeing of 5e just from this short perusal.  ^_^

Re: Ravenloft - OOC Chat #1

It probably doesn't help to note that they're about to release "DnD 2024"  !  ;>

After 3.5 I was hoping they'd move to a classless system - basically expand the multiclassing to allow a character build based on picking combat ability, skills (including thief skills), and magic (divine and/or arcane) so you could craft truly unique characters ... but that didn't happen !
