Re: What If?: Strange Tales, Act 1, Scene 2.
Buying the opportunity to step up a d8 to d10 doom, Conan is now at 2 pp.

2d10 Solo, d8 King of Khats (teleporters), d10 Superhuman Strength (fending off pillars), d12 Teleport (trying to get out), d8 Covert Expert (trying to disappear in the chaos to strike from hiding), d8 Conan's Mental Stress (and no complication, not in the avalanche).

17:00, Today: Erlik Khan rolled 4,9,7,1,4,8,4 using d10,d10,d8,d10,d12,d8,d8 with rolls of 4,9,7,1,4,8,4. Escape the prison of pillars

Spending a d8 doom to keep the 7.  Total: 24, Effect d12, 1 Opportunity.  Conan's complication is stepped back to d8, then up to d10 due to extraordinary success.  It's a borderline use, but I'm going to trigger his No Longer Of Earth limit; it wasn't a banishment attempt per se, but Conan explicitly described the mystic properties of the pillars and it makes sense to me that they'd be more effective because of his limit and extradimensional invader status.  So adding a d10 doom, but he now has a d12 Trapped By Sacred Pillars complication, which narratively also means he was unable to teleport away.  Per his Elder God effect, although his affiliation has d10 dice, it takes a stepped up d12 to remove one affiliation die (like Thanos, etc.) so he hasn't quite lost his first affiliation die, but it is very close and he will be strongly hampered when the next person goes, since he has both stress and a complication now.

The King of Khats hesitated just a moment too long, staring in shocked hatred and rage at the mere mortal, without even a touch of magic to his nature, who dared to act so against him!  With a snarl of frustration, he started to simply knock aside the first of the falling pillars, but realized the true scope of the attack too late as the pillars begin falling one by one.  The way they shifted, falling always towards him no matter how he moved, was clear evidence that the defenses of the Ancient One's lamasery did not welcome its new master!

Recognizing the potential danger those warding spells might pose, Erlik Khan tried to slip into the shadows and leave his exposed position, but it was too late! Already the pillars had fallen in a ring around him, the circle complete, and a wall of magic intended to ward or contain entities no longer of this plane had sprung up around him.  He could not escape!  At least, not until he could disrupt that circle...

Re: What If?: Strange Tales, Act 1, Scene 2.
The Elder Khat tried to pull itself to its feet, using the very cliff-wall it had just slammed into moments before as a support. Almost standing again, there came a series of crashes from the lamasery, accompanied by a psychic beacon from Erlik Khan to come back and lend aid. Distracted by the message from its master, the Khat slipped on an icy patch of ground and fell back against the rock again.

Magik heard the same crashes and ignored them. She was too busy feeling the rush of having the upper hand in a combat situation, a feeling she hadn't had since weeks before when she had menaced the mutant called Forge. That time had been soured when she had allowed herself to be overtaken by bloodlust, and almost killed her friends, the New Mutants. This time, she was alone with her prey. There were no such concerns of nearby innocents to stop her from enjoying this victory.

"You cower against a wall like the vermin you are, Khat," she said, with just a hint of the otherworldly demonic tone that her voice sometimes took on when she gave herself over to the darker side of her being. She stepped toward the Khat slowly, deliberately, relishing the situation she had put the demon into. With each step, it seemed, another plate of her glimmering armor slid onto one of her limbs. "How many times have you looked down on another in this predicament? Toying with them, playing with them in the manner of an alley-cat torturing a rat? The same way you did with my allies and I when we arrived?"

At this point, she was only a few feet from the demon. Her soulsword closed the distance as she held the point of it before the Khat's featureless face.

"I'm sure you usually find yourself appearing unharmed in whatever underworld hole you came from when you lose a battle... but this sword was manifested from my own essence for the very purpose of killing demons." She smiled, baring those fangs again. "Let's see if you come back this time."

Wow. I just creeped myself out a little there. So, the Magik personality has clearly taken control for now, and she plans to simply execute the Elder Khat. I assume the demon would just sort of dissipate into ether once defeated, but that won't stop Magik from the symbolic decapitation blow. I figured I'd try to end this "side-battle", so Magik can get back in the main fray.

Solo D8, Honorable but Broken Soul D8, Sorcery Mastery D10 (she must be pulling some kind of tricks to keep the Khat from simply teleporting away), Weapon 2D10 (Maim the Ethereal SFX once again), Menace Expert D8.

Magik rolled 4,7,8,6,7 using d8,d8,d10,2d10,d8 with rolls of 4,7,8,3,3,7 to destroy the Elder Khat. Oh, and I forgot his stress. Magik rolled 4 using 1d10 for the Khat's stress. Meh. Okay, so I want this fight to be over, but not enough burn my last PP, so we'll just go Total: 15, Effect: D10.

Good luck, kitty.

Re: What If?: Strange Tales, Act 1, Scene 2.
Doom strode toward the trapped Erlik Khan, pulling a sphere from his cloak and manipulating dials on it while he fed its power into the blasters on his suit.  Dr Strange thought he recognized the device...

"As I told you before Khan, Doom has faced your betters in their own realm.  Let us see how you fare against antimatter in this realm demon."

As he finished draining the antimatter into his blasters, Strange identified the device Doom tried to use on Mephisto as an antimatter bomb.  Doom then struck down at the trapped demon's head and unleashed the full power of his suit's blasters to propel the antimatter into its skull.

Rolling: d10 (Buying Opportunity for Science Master Stunt) + d6 (Team) + d8 (Doom's Genius Knows No Equals) + d10 (Energy Blast) + d10 (Super Strength - SFX Multipower) + d12 (Trapped By Sacred Pillars) + d12 (Overpowered Armor)

Re: What If?: Strange Tales, Act 1, Scene 2.
(You also forgot his complication, but it's only a d6)

The beast may have hidden from the Dhawgs hunting it down like they had its kin, but it did not seem to give into the sudden intimidation from Magik so easily. Demons that were it's equal simply did not compare to one little girl, as scary as she thought herself. "You may be a powerful sorceress in your home dimension - " it said, seemingly vanishing as Magik moved forward.

"But unlike you, I am powerful here as well," it claimed, seemingly appearing behind the girl, ready to pounce. The Limbo Sorceress's dark temper had made her far too bold. And the demon would be sure to make her pay for that mistake as the sharp teeth in its mouth formed a sadistic grin.

Solo d10 + Sadistic Predator d8 + Superhuman Reflexes d10 + Teleport d10 + Combat Expert d8

00:25, Today: Nico Minoru, for the NPC Watcher (Nico), rolled 3,3,9,1,8 using d8,d8,d10,d10,d10 with rolls of 3,3,9,1,8. Elder Khat's Reaction.
Total = 17 + d8

Can't counter attack, but the demon easily succeeds its reaction.

Re: What If?: Strange Tales, Act 1, Scene 2.
OOC: Based, with gratitude, on the original reaction proposed by Nico.

Erlik Khan raised Jigme to try to remind Doom of his hostage, but the old man would not serve as a human shield to this attack. Khan knew this - as did Doom. The anti-matter blast was too focused, with the energy siphoned into Doom's blasters hitting precisely where the Latverian megalomaniac wanted. Matter converted into light and energy, the concentrated burst thundered through the demon's head... but did not quite destroy this primal, godlike monstrosity.

Utterly devastated by the power of Doom's mad science, Erlik Khan went limp for a moment, dropping Old Jigme's mutilated but still-living body to the ground, falling partway through a space between pillars. Though breathing, Old Jigme was too broken to even crawl away.

Groggy, humbled, and trapped, the much-weakened chaos lord opened its mouth to taunt Victor von Doom about surviving his attack with sheer demonic might. But its defiant bravado failed before it could speak. What, after all, would Erlik Khan say? Never had any mortal being done such harm to the Lord of Thirty Infernos. Instead, it stared at its reflection in Doom's unmoving mask of metal, silenced.

Solo 2d10 + Lord of Thirty Infernos d8 + Godlike Durability d12 + Combat Expert d8 + Old Jigme Complication d10 + Doom die d10

13:58, Today: Nico Minoru, for the NPC Erlik Khan, rolled 1,1,2,1,2,7,7 using d8,d8,d10,d10,d10,d10,d12 with rolls of 1,1,2,1,2,7,7.

Going to spend 2d10 from doom pool to add those two 2's in... 7+7+2+2=18
(Like any normal Watcher, gotta spend to keep my bad guy up. That's what Doom dice are for, right?)

Total = 18, Effect = d10 and 3 opportunities

With the Total above 17, Doom's effect dice step up only once, to d12. This removes an affiliation die and leaves Erlik Khan with d12 physical stress, almost beaten, but not quite.

EDIT: Since Erlik Khan is partly trapped because he is too big to crawl out through the space between columns, I am going to add d6 doom with his limit and turn Growth into a d6 Too Big to Maneuver complication.

(Note that with the die on the roll and two for the total, 3d10 doom dice were spent on this reaction.)

Re: What If?: Strange Tales, Act 1, Scene 2.
The strain of bringing down the pillars had taken its toll on Conan. Despite his legendary stamina, he was panting, out of breath, his lungs struggling to take in the thin mountain air.

Once again, Conan used Doom's powerful attacks as a distraction. Using the same preternatural stealth effect his sword had lent him since he entered the temple, Conan approached the place where Old Jigme's body had fallen outside the cage of pillars, with only the guide's legs still within.

Proximity to Doom had an undesired effect. Conan knew what the blade wanted from the masked tyrant, and he feared what he must do to get it. But the blade, its true goal close, began to chatter in Conan's head again. It didn't want to bother with the old man; it wanted Doom. Too soon, the mental clarity Conan had enjoyed began to end. Seeing the old man twitch in pain, he fought to quiet the voice in his mind.

Approaching, Conan whispered to Jigme in the tongue the broken man had spoken all of his life. "Rest now, master of untamed peaks. Your unmatched prowess has made you the companion of heroes and sorcerers, but brought you to this cruel fate. No man should survive such long, nor desire to. Now your suffering ends. Any final words?"

Bent over the guide, the Cimmerian listened, his face grim, then nodded. Their eyes met. An understanding passed between them. Most of those present, distracted by the spectacular battle, did not notice this exchange. Strange, however, saw. And knew.

Conan stepped back and raised his blade. "`Tis said a valkyrie hovers near; perhaps she comes to bear your brave soul to Valhalla! Jigme of the Himalayas, farewell!"

The blade flashed green before it fell.

OOC: Conan is rolling to create an asset and end the scene complication. Dice Pool: Team d8 (acting now to ensure the group's victory) + From an Age of Sword and Sorcery d4 (killing Jigme as part of an older world's warrior ethic) + Enhanced Reflexes d10 (stepped by A Thief, A Reaver, A Slayer SFX) + Weapon d8 + Combat Master d10 + Systematic Stealth Asset d12 = d12+2d10+2d8+d4

EDIT: Also, Conan shuts down his Enhanced Stamina to earn 1 PP with his Weary With Endless Slaughter limit, and earns a second 1 PP when he steps up his emotional stress to d8 with his As Quick to Rage as Mirth limit (the chaos lord has only enraged Conan further by forcing him to take Jigme's life). Just realized I didn't want to be left without any PP after this.

02:18, Today: Conan the Accuser rolled d12,2d10,2d8,d4 with rolls of 6,8,6,6,1,3. for Conan to make an asset, etc.
(Spending 1 PP to keep the 3 on the d4 for the total, and another PP to keep the second effect die.)

Total: 17, Effect d12 to create the asset, d10 to step back the complication)

REACTION NEEDED: Doom Pool

Re: What If?: Strange Tales, Act 1, Scene 2.
OOC: Per the guidelines, since this is mostly just creating an asset (and getting rid of a complication we all seem to agree logically should go), I am just rolling the doom pool myself. Doom Pool = d10+3d8+d6, plus d6 for the scene complication being removed, and d8 for Conan's mental stress
02:36, Today: Conan the Accuser, for the NPC The Doom Pool, rolled d10,4d8,2d6 with rolls of 3,5,6,2,7,3,3 resisting Conan's asset.
Total: 13, Effect d10. Conan succeeds in removing the scene complication and creating the asset: d12 Old Jigme's Sacrifice. Unless anyone objects, I'm going to remove everyone's Old Jigme complications from the Status Block, not just the scene complication.

The strike was true. And swift. The old man died quickly.

When it was done, Conan looked right at Strange. "The demon said this sacrifice was the key to smiting it from this plane. Will you do what must be done, or did a good man lose his life in vain?"

OOC: The d12 asset is for either Valkyrie or Dr. Strange to bring in Interloper. However, I believe Strange must at least agree for Jigme's life force to be used for this...

Re: What If?: Strange Tales, Act 1, Scene 2.
It seemed as if ages had passed, many turns of the wheel since Strange felt he last had strength to even speak.  For every second of the chaotic eldritch battle that swirled around him, Stephen had lived aeons in his failure...his eyes locked on the tattered, tortured form of innocent Old Jigme.

His old ally The Cimmerian...or was it his old ally the Spaceknight, or was it merely a demon taking form and voice from Strange's memories..?  None of it mattered...the Eye of Agamotto showed him the life force leaving Jigme, almost in mockery of what he had let himself become.

But the tears flowed no longer.  Dr. Strange's jaw set firm, and he nodded low to the barbarian in otherworldly armor.  "It is what must be done.  Sometimes, we must make the necessary sacrifices...gods help me, if this is the lesson I must learn, so be it!"

Re: What If?: Strange Tales, Act 1, Scene 2.
The spirit form of Brunnhilde had watched the scene play out before her, pleased that her friend Stephen had roused from his despair.  She looked approvingly down on the bold warrior who seemed so like those Norsemen who had worshipped the Aesir centuries ago, and on Von Doom who did in truth seem to be aiding the heroes.

Upon Jigme's passing, she called his spirit to her, saying "Fear not, good man, for I have given thee my word that thine journey to what comes after shall be both swift and sure.  The foul beings that beset this place shall not have thee.  Go now to your true rest and reward!"

And as the old man's spirit faded and departed this plane, the Valkyrie raised her enchanted blade, Dragonfang, and with a slashing motion tore a rip between the worlds.  Even those without mystic senses could perceive the hole that formed in the air at the end of the vast chamber, and beyond it the forms of the four Defenders.

"We still have much work to do in the Borderlands, Steven, fixing that which the Dragon of the Moon hath wrought, and so I must depart Midgard once more.  Stalwart allies 'til the end, Andromeda and Manslaughter shalt aid me in this endeavor, while the Interloper returns now to Midgard to hunt the chaos spawn that seek to return to the mortal lands from whence they have long been banished.

"Fare thee well, my friend, and hold to thine course!  Tis a mighty force you have assembled here, and methinks thou shalt be more than the equal of the challenges thou shalt face, so long as you stay true, each to the others!  I look forward til the day we meet again!"

Silently, the hulking figure of the man behind the Valkyrie stepped forth through the portal, and He Who Goes Where He Will returned to Earth once more.

And as the portal faded, Brunnhilde's voice echoed faintly out of the closing gap.  "And Stephen, I have no doubt thou hast seen to good Aragorn's care during mine absence.  Perhaps he would welcome the chance to stretch his wings, if the time-lost warrior needs a steed while he remains here..."

OOC:  Possible unlockable for Conan:  Aragorn, the Valkyrie's winged steed.

Re: What If?: Strange Tales, Act 1, Scene 2.
The vision of the Valkyrior maid and her companions faded, and Conan blinked, hoping none of it was due to the growing fugue in his mind. The giant who appeared in the woman's place seemed real enough. "If this looming colossus be our salvation, then let us be done with these demons!" Conan said. "A good man fell for victory, let us seek revenge!"

Just posting to update the status block and Up Next. But also, since the d12 asset wasn't necessary to bring Interloper back, I think it makes sense to open it up for anyone who role-plays being driven by Jigme's death on an action. So the d12 Old Jigme's Sacrifice asset is still available for an action, to the first hero who claims it.

"Strange, I'm not certain precisely what's going on with you, but before we're all dead, I suggest you help get rid of this demon once and for all," she said, holding her staff at the ready. She puzzled for spells, but there were only so many that came to the tip of the tongue, so she was leaving this to Strange. Wasn't that his deal anyway? Every pair of eyes in the palatial room turned to Strange, including the massive eyes of Erlik Khan, peering out from underneath his prison of fallen pillars. He stood in thought for a long moment.

"This has been a harrowing time for me, and I find myself weakened," the doctor finally said, "but I can still be of some use. Interloper..!"

He turned to the hulking eternal.

"It is good to have you here," he said with a nod. "I may even have to impose upon you to lead our group for a time, as I need to... well, we can discuss that further once we have dealt with the threat at hand."

Strange put his hands to his chest and muttered a few words in a tongue none but the Interloper understood. Doom made a note to check his recording of this moment later, and research the origin of the incantation. The Sorcerer Supreme then moved his hands outward, seemingly pulling something out of his own body in the form of a pulsating crimson ball of energy.

"I give you a modicum of my own power, as only you know how to use it. Please strike down this abomination once and for all."

Re: What If?: Strange Tales, Act 1, Scene 2.
"It has been many lives of mortal man since a magus of your line has worked this spell, Stephen Strange, but I have not forgotten."

The massive man holds his hands out before him, catching the sphere of glowing energy the sorcerer sent his way.  Turning towards the caged demon lord, Interloper strides boldly forward.  His wide brimmed hat keeps his face in shadow, but within that darkness two points of light start to glow with a power older than the stars.

"Spawn of Earth and Darkness and Magic, you were banished from this world before the rise of man.  You have no place here!  Begone!  Return to your foul kingdom and trouble this plane no more!  This lamasery will stand your taint no more!"

The cosmic power that is his birthright bursts from the Eternal's eyes, channeling the power granted to him by Doctor Strange.  The brilliant beams do not strike the demon lord, however, but instead strike the faintly glowing pillars that imprison the invader.  Their power flares in response, striving to push the King of Khats back out of this plane...

Re: What If?: Strange Tales, Act 1, Scene 2.
For the first time in centuries, Erlik Khan found himself in a panic. The mystical wards placed upon the pillars that were his prison somehow interfered with his teleportation. Even worse, he could feel the combined might of Earth's Sorcerer Supreme and an Eternal compelling him to return to his own domain. Out of options, he was forced to rely on his considerable brute strength.

Erlik Khan will attempt to put all of his strength into one final desperate attempt to push the pillars off of himself. I have no reason to want the Khan to stick around, but I wouldn't be playing right if I didn't try to give him a chance. So I'll spend D6 from the doom pool to double his strength with his "Many Armed" SFX (it also lets him keep an extra effect die, so we'll see if that comes into play).

Solo 2d10 + Lord of Thirty Infernos d8 + Superhuman Strength 2d10 + Sorcery Supremacy D12 (using magic to enhance his strength) + Mystic Master d10. Magik, on behalf of Erlik Khan, rolled 18,6,11,2,4 using 2d10,d8,2d10,d12,d10 with rolls of 8,10,6,3,8,2,4 to escape imprisonment. He would need to keep three extra dice for his total to even have a chance, and I think we're all ready for this encounter to end, so that will be Total: 18, Effect D12. No need to do all the math, the Khan's D12 complication is stepped up, complicating him out.

Every muscle in Erlik Khan's massive frame tensed and strained, pushing against the pillars with all his might. It proved fruitless. The gathered warriors held their ears in pain, though it could not drown out the otherworldly roar of fury that issued from Erlik Khan's fanged mouth. The light emanating from the pillars filled the room, forcing all present to look away or risk being blinded. When the light faded and the cacophony drew to a close, there was no sign of the Khan. The columns groaned and crashed to the ground in a heap.

The group stood in relieved silence for some time, collecting their wits and letting their heartbeats die down to a normal speed. Eventually, Strange turned to survey the room, his face hardening into a look of concern.

"Where is Illyana?" he asked, to no response.

Re: What If?: Strange Tales, Act 1, Scene 2.
It's been a while, so as a reminder:
Magik:

Khat:

OOC:  This is happening right after the pillars were crashing down around the Khan and the wards were gaining strength.

Khat's predatory instincts saw that the girl was vulnerable, off balance.  As much as he liked playing with his food, this was too tempting an opportunity to give up.  Besides, there  were... uncomfortable energies beginning to permeate the air around the lamasery.  He didn't know what was happening inside, but something new and unsettling was manifesting in the freezing mountain air.  Best to finish off this snip of a girl quickly!

Without further hesitation, the demon pounced on Magik from behind, trying to knock her down, with his claws flashing forward to rip her torso while his fangs try to close on her neck!

d10 Solo, d8 Sadistic Predator, d6+d8 Superhuman Strength with Claws SFX, d10 Teleport (due to limit), d10 Covert Master, d8 Magik's ES

Re: What If?: Strange Tales, Act 1, Scene 2.
Solo d8 + The Ends Justify the Means D4+PP (her rash actions put her into this vulnerable position) + Magic Resistance d10 + Enhanced Durability d8 + Combat Expert d8 + Elder Khat's physical stress d10. I'll use Focus to combine two of those d8s into another d10.

Magik rolled 1,3,10,2,5 using d8,d4,d10,d10,d10 with rolls of 1,3,10,2,5 reacting to the Elder Khat. One opportunity for the doom pool. I'll spend the PP I just earned to add a die to my total, making it Total: 18, Effect: d10.

The Khat's attack was well-timed, but in the last split-second before he made contact, he was surprised to see movement at Magik's lower back. The final piece of Magik's visual transformation to her demonic form burst forth, a pointed tail as red as her softly glowing eyes. The tail wasn't strong enough to hurt the Elder Khat, but it lashed out at him as if acting of its own accord. It was just enough to startle him, giving Magik the opportunity to dodge out of his path.

Re: What If?: Strange Tales, Act 1, Scene 2.
"Your parlor tricks are amusing," taunted the Elder Khat, trying to elicit another emotional response from Illyana, "but I think that was the last you had."

He waited for Magik to respond, but she was still embarrassed that her threat from earlier had resulted in nothing but a misstep on her part. She would not let her confidence blind her again. Instead, she set her hooves (formerly boots) and gripped the soulsword with both hands, preparing a final strike.

Let's end this. Nothing flashy, just a simple swing at the demon's midsection, assisted by magic. Solo d8 + Demon Queen of Limbo d8 + Sorcery Mastery D10 + Weapon 2d10 (Maim the Ethereal SFX) + Combat Expert D8. I'll Focus again, so two d8s = d10. Magik rolled 8,28 using d8,4d10 with rolls of 8,10,8,8,2 to slay the Elder Khat. I forgot his stress, but no worries, the roll went about as well as it could have even without it. I'll spend my last PP in the hopes of getting a high enough total to step up twice and end the fight, so Total: 26, Effect: d10.

Total: 17, Effect d10.  I'd have to blow two doom dice to avoid, and there is no effective difference between a 17 and a 23, so I'll leave it at that.  Magik's effect is stepped up to d12.

Illyana's strike was swift, but the demon's inhuman reflexes enabled it to twist away from the blow so that the blade didn't slice it in two but only sliced a shallow cut down it's side.  Even so, the deadly power of the soulsword burned through the elder khat's essence like a poisonous fire, searing the demon far beyond the apparent injury from the wound itself.  The khat's howl of pain echoed throughout the valley, and within the halls of the lamasery itself.

Re: What If?: Strange Tales, Act 1, Scene 2.
Strange was tired. He was tired of the demons, tired of his physical exhaustion, and tired of death. With a wave of his hand, crimson bands of force cleared the stone rubble cluttering the entrance to the Ancient One's former abode.

Striding out into the howling blizzard, he saw the Elder Khat still trading blows with Illyana, the young mutant's soulsword biting deeply and weakening him.

"Enough!" Strange commanded. His mystically empowered voice echoed above the storm, as he began his incantations. "By the the Seven Rings of Raggadorr, I cast you back to whence you came! I conjure the Seven Cunning Candles of Kamar-Taj, to haste your passage! Behold the light of the Seven Suns of Cinnibus, to sear your flesh until you depart!"

Suddenly, the demon was orbited by shrinking circles of energy, and the ice beneath its feet began to shine with a scorching, all-consuming brilliance. Around it, one by one, elaborate sacred candles crafted by the priests of Kamar-Taj appeared on the ground in a ring around the demon and ignited, their flames uncannily burning tall and bright amid the gale-force winds. Still, the Elder Khat wailed in defiance as well as pain, holding onto its presence in this plane.

The Sorcerer Supreme looked on the creature's torture without pity. He examined it with his mystical sight, saw the tethers of spirit that connected to its fellow khats, saw the transmission of energy that empowered it from the chaos, even saw the connective tissue that gave its chaos form in defiance of universal order. Strange knew now, this creature was no match for him, not without Erlik Khan present to help it.

"Do not try my patience, creature. I have endured much to drive your master from this plane. I have committed an act of black magic to defeat him, allowing the sacrifice of an innocent soul to obtain victory. Don't imagine I did not foresee that this was your liege's plan all along! But now that I have broken my moral code, is this truly the time to test me?"

"This one is my prey!" the Khat screamed, bellowing with rage and agony in equal measure. "I have claimed this sorceress as mine! I will not give up my hunt!"

"I am warning you," Strange said, his magically augmented voice calm, but growing angrier as he spoke. "I gave a life to banish your master. I offer you this final chance to follow him in banishment. The spells I torment you with now cost little  effort, but if you force me to truly exert myself, I will erase you. I will call upon the Eye of Agamatto to annihilate your very spirit with its eldritch light. Defy me now, and I will blot you from the face of Eternity itself, as if you had never been."

Slowly, the eye on the golden amulet at Stephen Strange's neck began to open, and a thin, impossibly white beam of light shone forth, then began to widen...

OOC: Strange is trying to physically stress the khat into giving up and leaving Earth, Since he has emotional stress, Strange is stepping back his Mystic Regalia powers with his self-doubt limit to earn 1PP, and he is also using the once per scene optional rule to use a negative scene distinction along with a positive personal distinction, to earn another PP and bring him up to a total of 3PP before he rolls.

Oookaayyy.  I think we can call this one...  ;-)  Total:  10, Effect d4.

The writhing form of the Elder Khat quivered in pain and a terrible frustrated anger as the Sorcerer Supreme threatened it's very existence.  For a moment it held out against that threat, refusing to give up its prey.  But as the first glimmers of white light from Strange's amulet began to fall upon it, the demon's false courage fled before that radiance.  Only its wounded pride let it last long enough for one last word.

"I leave this site to you, Strange, but I do not relinquish my claim on this girl!"  Turning its glare upon Illyana, it told her "I will come for you, little sorceress.  Watch the shadows, and one day I'll be there and your soul will be miiinnneee..."  The terrible voice of the demon faded to nothing as it's form disappeared from this plane of existence, fleeing the utter destruction Strange threatened it with.

Re: What If?: Strange Tales, Act 1, Scene 2.
Erlik Khan appeared in a realm beyond even the Thirty Infernos, in a dimension of deep chaos both adjacent to and far removed from Earth.

The chaos lord appeared in the presence of a greater being of his kind. But where Erlik Khan was twisted and ugly, this chaos lord was majestic, a human-like but clearly inhuman being, the form of a man with flowing blond hair, gray skin, long gloves and high boots, a suit of chainmail beneath a green tunic, and a sword that was the essence of evil itself at his side.

This being was Arioch, one of the great lords of chaos, second only to Shuma-Gorath itself. Arioch's power was immense, limited only by his imagination, and all of it was bent on conquest and destruction.

The being raised an eyebrow, not bothering to ask for a report on Erlik Khan's progress. Arioch's voice could annihilate worlds with a single eldritch syllable. The demon knew its lord had only one question.

"It is done," Erlik Khan said, grinning though its form was injured. "As you commanded. The Sorcerer Supreme of Earth consented to a form of black magic to defeat me. His corruption will only grow further."

The placid face barely changed, but there was the hint of pleasure. Erlik Khan knew he had served his lord well.

"He will have no choice, my dread lord," Khan stated, proud of his work and happy to have pleased his master, a power of utter and complete evil. "If Stephen Strange wishes to defeat you, he must become you..."

Re: What If?: Strange Tales, Act 1, Scene 2.
Strange's allies watched the Sorcerer Supreme remove the threat of the last demon, then began to survey their surroundings. There was a moment of peace, and for a few seconds, no one even spoke.

Then Conan ran at Doom, with his sword out.

No one was quite certain why it happened. But Conan had madness in his eyes.

As he drew closer, Conan reversed his grip on the blade, so that the handle was pointing towards the Latverian dictator, the blade down.

And then the sword began to glow. A nimbus of green light extended from the sword to Doom, the aura silhouetting his armor.

Doom heard an electronic voice in his mind. "Greetings, being of Earth. I am the the Sub-Atomic Quasitron, a Kree quantum intelligence oriented towards enforcement of Imperial Security. I require your systems' access to planetary electronic communication hubs to reboot my quasitronic brain. Please do not attempt to break network connection."

Despite the distraction of the emerald energy field and the voice speaking to him, Victor von Doom's incomparable mind took less than a second to process all the factors in his decision of what to do next. The Lord of Latveria was not in the habit of allowing others to use his resources without his permission. And he was even less in the habit of allowing others access to the systems of technology he had designed. On the one hand, this barbaric figure seemed to be an associate of Strange, and he had been a great help in defeating Erlik Khan. On the other hand, the man looked deranged, and who knew what the Kree device's true motives were.

The armored mastermind only had a moment to decide whether to permit this alien artifact to perform its task, or to act to defend his systems with countermeasures, or possibly even to act against the hulking warrior directly. However, he was Doom. Weaker minds might need time to agonize over such a decision, but the Lord of Latveria would choose his action at once...

OOC: The sword's desire to reboot by connecting to Doom's systems is the whole reason it pushed Conan to follow the group, and with the threat of Erlik Khan gone, it has forced Conan to act.

What happens next is entirely up to Doom. If he lets Conan's sword access his armor's connection to the Internet and other networks, I will use the dice action as a roll against the Doom Pool to step back Conan's mental stress. If Doom chooses to resist this, then he can roll a reaction, and I will be using the roll to try to create a "Systems Compromised" Complication against Doom. (Obviously, since the action scene is likely almost over, Doom's complication would vanish almost instantly).

Helluva last minute curveball, right? Either the action scene is about to end, or it just got more complicated.

Solo d10 (definitely not acting as part of the team), A Panther's Instinctive Grace d8 (coming at Doom more quickly than he can physically react), Enhanced Reflexes d8, Weapon d8, Covert Master d8, Systematic Stealth Asset d12 = d12+d10+4d8

00:01, Today: Conan the Accuser rolled using d12,d10,4d8 with rolls of 3,5,2,5,8,1. for Conan's sword to trying to use Doom.

Spending 1PP to keep an extra die. 8+5+5=18

Total 18, Effect: d12, d10 (either vs. doom pool to recover mental stress, or against Doom, also spending 1 PP to keep a second effect die (d10) to recover emotional stress as well, by finally ending Conan's long mental torment).

1 Opportunity is available if the Doom Pool (or, under the circumstances Dr. Doom) wants to buy it.

Alright, Doom, the ball is in your court. How do you choose to react?

Re: What If?: Strange Tales, Act 1, Scene 2.
Doom things for a moment then a smile crosses his face.

"Of course, Doom will aid you in rebooting your matrix."  He opens up the communications link and allows his armor to act as a relay station for the Kree Quantum Intelligence.  Of course communications being bi-directional Doom will take his chance to acquire access to some advanced technology...

OOC: So Doom will help the quantum mind with its reboot attempt and isn't even trying to take control or anything like that (new leaf and all) but he will see what sort of information he can acquire.  Plus he will make sure the machine isn't doing anything nefarious.  Not sure if its worth rolling.

Re: What If?: Strange Tales, Act 1, Scene 2.
Buying your opportunity, and I added the PP and doom die to the status block below.

17:27, Today: Interloper rolled 6,2,2,4,1 using d6,d6,d8,d8,d8 with rolls of 6,2,2,4,1. Doom pool roll.
17:28, Today: Interloper rolled 2 using 1d8 with rolls of 2. Forgot your stress.

Total: 10, Effect D8, 1 Opportunity

You can step up one effect die with extraordinary success, but it doesn't really matter, since both are already high enough to remove your stress dice.  Updating the status block:

Re: What If?: Strange Tales, Act 1, Scene 2.
The process of connection between the Kree Sword and Doom's astoundingly advanced localized computer-system happened so fast that the others didn't even notice anything had happened. For Doom and Conan, this was not so. Conan felt a rush of information that he could not hope to understand pass not so much into, but through his nervous system, followed by merciful, blessed clarity. Doom's keen mind saw thousands of lines of unfamiliar code run through his in-helmet digital display. Not even he could process it all at once, but he made sure it was properly filed into the suit's memory banks to pore over later. He had already started to decode the secrets of what little he had been able to make out.

In a rare moment of showing something like human frailty, Conan allowed himself to fall back onto his haunches and breathe a sigh of relief. The sword, finally still, fell to the ground and drove itself into the frozen earth.

"You have my thanks, armored sorcerer," Conan said. "The blade... it has been... in my head, somehow... for months. Always calling. I knew not what it sought... until you arrived."

He stood again. Enough weakness.

"It falls silent at last. A few weeks hence, and it would have driven me mad."

"Of course, warrior," Doom intoned, "Doom is nothing if not accommodating to those in need."

Conan detected a superior tone he wasn't sure he cared for, but in his contentment to be free of the sword's constant chatter, he ignored it. Doctor Strange stepped toward him.

"I am glad you've broken free of its affliction," Strange said. "What would you do with it? It looks to be of extraterrestrial origin. Would you like me to contact one of my allies who may have knowledge of it? Or if you'd rather be rid of it now, I'm sure the Interloper and myself could see to banish it to some other plane, one where it could no longer vex you..."

"It may have quieted for now, but I don't think it's done with me." Conan held out a hand, and the Kree blade leapt to it, as he had assumed it would. "And I still need a sword."

"What now, Strange?" Interloper asked. He was still standing, arms folded, in the same spot he had since the group made their way outside.

"I have no doubt that this blizzard was the work of some foul spell. Now that the demons have been exorcised from this place, the storm should subside quickly. With the howling of the winds gone, we should find the Lamasery a much more welcoming place. I will show you all to the quarters, where there should be more than enough room for each of you to rest." He reached up a hand to one of the larger man's broad shoulders. "You and I must talk, Interloper. We must talk of the imposition I mentioned earlier, and of a path I must walk alone for a time..."

"Speaking of walking alone," Nico interjected, pointing with her staff toward the snow-blanketed plain from which the Elder Khat had just disappeared, "I think Little Miss Sunshine's break is over. And it looks like she got a heavy metal makeover."

Indeed, Magik was approaching them, her hooves making ironically heart-shaped impressions in the snow. None but Strange had seen ever seen her in her devilish form before now, and they stared with a mix of curiosity and concern. Despite having traveled with her for several days at this point, several of her compatriots stayed on guard, in case her new look came with a change in demeanor.

Indeed, not an hour before, Magik had harbored every intention of making Strange pay for the loosening of her grip that his actions had inadvertently caused on her realm. But now, sore both physically and mentally from the battle with the Khat (a battle, she couldn't help reminding herself, that she may have lost if Strange had not stepped in), she simply held her soulsword in front of her as it slipped back into whatever Limbic pocket she had pulled it from. As she did, the plates of her hellish armor began to slide back from view, as did her more horrifying features.

She stood before them for a moment, looking down at the uniform whiteness of the ground. When she finally spoke, she sounded every bit like an exhausted and irritated teenage girl.

"I'm really tired. Can we go to bed?"
