Re: What If?: Act 2, Scene 1
The mystery man had no sooner regained his footing as he had noticed the barbarian's blade had been hurled towards him saying only, "well crap..."

And with that he lept to his right, looking to dodge the fearsome projectile.

OOC: Solo d10 + Mysterious Background d8 + Enhanced Reflexes d8 + Body Armor d6 + Combat Master d10 + Conan’s Mental Stress d10

Dice Pool = 3d10 + 2d8 + d6

23:56, Fri 21 Feb 2014: New Player rolled 24,11,4 using 3d10,2d8,d6 ((9,9,6,5,6,4))

Result = 15 + d10 effect die. Since the Mystery Man's effect die was higher, he will step-down the d8 Effect Die so that he ends-up taking d6 Physical Stress.

The old man was fast, something he had up until now managed to prove in short-order. But his swarthy opponent, this time, was much fast. He did manage to dodge what would've been a fatal blow, but still managed to take a noticeable gash across his left bicep. A gash that easily tore his robe and pajama shirt, but not so much the deep green bodysuit that was revealed after the sword ended its flight in the wall behind him.

After looking over his shoulder at where the sword stuck he turned to the barbarian and said, "okay pal, kid gloves are off!"

OOC: so... who's up next Conan?

Re: What If?: Act 2, Scene 1
OOC: Conan will go first this round.

One guard fell, the other was fool enough to stand, though he stepped back a few strategic steps. At the bottom of the stairway, more guards from the other floors were assembling, but froze at the sight at the top of the stairs.

Conan put his left hand on the spot where the bannister met the wall and lifted his sword. He stood like an image of the unconquerable primordial—legs braced far apart, head thrust forward, one hand clutching the wall for support, the other gripping the sword on high, with the great corded muscles standing out in iron ridges, and his features frozen in a death snarl of fury—his eyes blazing terribly through the mist of blood which veiled them. The men faltered—ruthless, criminal and dissolute though they were, yet they came of a breed men called civilized, with a civilized background; here was the barbarian—the natural killer.

The guards shrank back, many of their memories' flashing on the same moment: the day, only months before, when they had found the bodies of their comrades, Cole, Macon and Reese, cut to ribbons, murdered by Wolverine in the Hellfire Club's first confrontation with the X-Men. Each pictured themselves ending up the same way: bloody messes on the mansion's floor.

Conan sensed their uncertainty and grinned mirthlessly and ferociously. "Who dies first?" he mumbled through smashed and bloody lips.

No one moved. There didn't seem to be any volunteers. The Cimmerian decided to waste no more time on these hirelings. Remembering what he had done in the lamasery, and how there seemed to be nothing his sword could not cut, Conan examined the image of the staircase in his mind. The steps were laid with marble, but underneath, the structure was only wooden.

With both hands, Conan brought down his sword, striking the joint where stairs met the floor of the third level. The blade flashed with emerald radiance as it struck. There was a noise like thunder as the marble cracked, and then began to shake, as Conan sought to bring the staircase down.

He turned away, not looking to see if he were successful. He could see the way out, back up to the roof; he could also see the mysterious warrior in the robe, though his sleeping clothes were falling away, revealing dark green cloth beneath.

Conan did not take the way out.

"Companion of the Hellfire Club," he said. "I do not know the ways of your fraternity, nor of the masters who trained you, nor much of this era's battle customs. If you have a ritual to enjoin single combat, I do not know it. But I have a sense of what you are, and I have seen no other foes worthy of my blade. So let us waste time no more, and let no man disrupt us-- Choose your weapon, and let jackals grow drunk on the blood of he who falls!"

OOC: Conan is trying to inflict a "Demolished Staircase" complication on the last guard to take him out of the fight, and hopefully cut off the other guards from interrupting his duel with the Mystery Man-- and of course, he is still trying to give Black Cat more time to escape, not realizing she is still trying to burgle the place. Also, getting 1 XP for expressing ignorance of civilized customs.

Solo d10 + Expansive Four Story Manor (such places are not designed for their architecture to be attacked!) d8 + Enhanced Strength d8 + A Thief, A Reaver, A Slayer SFX d8 + Weapon d8 + Combat Master d10 + 3D Mansion Map Asset (used to attack the stairs) d8 + Hellfire Guard 2's Physical Stress d12 = d12,2d10,5d8

16:58, Sat 22 Feb 2014: Conan the Accuser rolled using d12,2d10,5d8 with rolls of 4,9,6,8,6,5,8,2. To demolish the stairs.

Spending 1 PP to add a third die (since I had at least one more than previous edits to the Scene Block indicate, per my clarification in General Discussion, I will just spend that one and leave the Scene Block as is).

9+8+8 = Total 25, Effect d12.

Re: What If?: Act 2, Scene 1
Ok, given that this is less an attack on the guard and more one that would ensure no more guards can really get up (at least temporarily), I'm going to count this as a Scene Complication against the doom pool

A reaver he was, and just as castles and forts could fall to the strength of Conan, so too could the Hellfire Club's manor. The rich aesthetic of the home meant little to his blade and neither the wood nor marble stopped it from nearly collapsing the entire staircase with a single blow. It was at least in part thanks to the structural weaknesses correctly identified by his sword, but that meant little to the warrior who thought his sword a magical entity.

The guard's last noise was a yelp as he collapsed down with the steps. This would surely prove a major hindrance to any who tried to come as his replacements, but there was no guarantee that this meant safety. After all, a certain mysterious guess had proved himself quite the foe. And Conan still had not learned of the dangerous duo Black Cat had now met.

Doom Pool + Conan's Mental Stress + Expansive Four Story Manor d8 (might not be made to attack, but you're still attacking an entire staircase)
06:51, Today: Nico Minoru, for the NPC Doom Pool, rolled 10,1,5 using 2d6,d8,d10 with rolls of 5,5,1,5.
07:01, Today: Nico Minoru, for the NPC Doom Pool, rolled 5,7 using d8,d10 with rolls of 5,7. Conan's Stress + Distinction.
Total = 12 + d10

And that staircase is long gone

Re: What If?: Act 2, Scene 1
The mysterious stranger stood across the room from the muscular barbarian. The scene reminded him of a time, 1928 was it? he asked himself. Yeah, that time me and L.P. were in the savage land. He has the look of someone who…

Interrupting his own train of thought he put his hands out in a non-threatening fashion, his world-weary eyes meeting those of his enemy whose burned with the fire of rage. “Look pal, I’m no ‘Companion of the Hellfire Club’, I’m just someone who maybe let them think that so that I could get something back that means a lot to me…”

With that, he slowly reached-out with one hand to wear he set the large tome on a glass case. The book’s  golden cover slightly illuminated in the red emergency lighting of the room full of antiquities, its  Chinese characters glowing softly with a peaceful, golden light. “This is the thing that I spent quite some time looking for, something that was stolen from me by allies of this organization. The only way I could get it back was with a little… subterfuge.”

Stretching-out his right hand, he did his best to appear as non-confrontational as possible. “Let’s try this again. My name is Randall. Orson Randall. What say we beat feet out of this place together…?” He waited for his opponent to relent and introduce himself…

OOC: I will spend 1 PP to use my “SPECIAL TECHNIQUE” again to convince Conan of my desire to flee the scene and my serious intention to make peace.

Dice Pool: Solo d10, World Weary d8, Mystery Sense d8 (reading Conan’s current state), & Mystic Expert d8, plus Conan’s Mental condition at d10 (which I forgot to roll the first time). My SPECIAL TECHNIQUE will lower the highest die in my pool -1 step (& hopefully increase the Effect Die +1 step)

08:35, Tue 25 Feb 2014: New Player rolled 8,5 using 4d8,1d10 ((1,1,2,4,5)).

Well crap, I wish I kept my first roll without Conan’s Mental stress. That’s 2 opportunities I rolled. I will take a 9 with a d8 stepped up to a final effect die of a d10. I don’t think that this will go well for me…

Re: What If?: Act 2, Scene 1
(OOC: Iron Fist, I have forgotten to include stress dice a million times. If you want, when you forget a die, feel free to just roll it on its own and insert an Edit saying what it rolled, then include it in the pool you already rolled, instead of re-rolling the whole thing.
Also, putting this roll together, I realize I previously got 1 XP for when I first inflicted physical stress on Iron Fist (a mystical foe), which I will count now.
Shutting down Cosmic Influence with Gear for 1 PP, since the voice of the sword is now completely muffled in Conan's mind.

Conan's Reaction: Solo d10 + From an Age of Swords & Sorcery d8 + Psychic Resistance d8 + Mystic Expert d8 + d6 Orson Randall's Physical Stress = d10,3d8,d6
23:55, Today: Conan the Accuser rolled 6,16,5 using d10,3d8,d6 with rolls of 6,7,6,3,5. reaction to Orson Randall's mental stress attempt.
No opportunities, though the Watcher (Nico) may still want to buy the two 1's Iron Fist rolled.
6+7 = 13 Total, d10 Effect Die. Conan is unfazed!)

Conan's eyes blazed an answer.

He swung his sword about him, in a deadly combat dance he had learned of the poet-swordsman of Khitai, to show his opponent that he too was trained in the refined fighting arts of the East. Randall could sense that the barbarian's chi was wild, unrestrained, primitive, but also as powerful as tiger's, and capable of deadly focus.

Even the mere physical sight of the man betrayed his primitive power. His mighty body and thick-muscled limbs combined the strength of a grizzly with the quickness of a panther. Under his tangled black mane his blue eyes gleamed with unquenchable savagery.

The tender keen of oblivion sang in Conan's heart, fighting his rage. He heard one last whisper from his sword, and then realized the voice was smothered completely now. He almost missed it.

He ran at Iron Fist, sword held perfectly level, ready for a powerful, man-killing swing. He sprinted, then leapt...

(OOC: Tempted to spend a PP and send my effect die back at Iron Fist as physical stress, since he rolled opportunities, but I can see now is not the time for the epic Conan vs. Iron Fist fisticuffs I envisioned.)

... And landed with his sword down, not attacking. Conan fell to one knee. He could resist the siren call no more. Something of this Orson Randall's words had penetrated. This man was no enemy. The Cimmerian finally gave in to the voice in his head.

He stood to his feet, and looked the green-clad martial artist dead in the eye. They were less than a foot apart.

"They haven't seen my face yet," Conan whispered. "I must leave this place at once. The Hellfire Club's seeing eyes are blind for now. If you truly deceived this league of fiends, Randall of New York, then I can help you keep your subterfuge..."

All at once, the hands of the Zamoran-trained thief were on the large book, as he grabbed it, turned and ran.

"Chase me out of here!" Conan hissed, as he bolted for the roof with the tome under his arm.

(OOC: I have taken the option Nico suggested as Watcher, and given in to the Mind Control effect to earn 1 PP. Not sure if that affects my mental stress, but Conan will now seek to aid the Pulp-era Iron Fist as much as he can.)

Doom looks around the room as the illusion fades and shrugs.  It was to be expected of Selene and unlikely the illusion would have held up the the scrutiny of Doom for much longer.

Re: What If?: Act 2, Scene 1
Selene turned to the intruder with murder in her eyes. But Doom's measured politeness in his response seemed to dampen her instinct to strike. Clearly he was the priority for the immortal mutant, rather than dealing with Black Cat.

"A common thief," Selene observed to Doom. "A charity case for the allegedly-dead Sorcerer Supreme. Definitely not invited. If she knows what's good for her, she will remove herself forthwith." Selene's eyes narrowed, and the room seemed to become warmer.

While Doom and Selene had spoken, Black Cat's eyes had already checked out some of the cases in the room. Farthest from her, past Doctor Doom (Was that really him, or one of his robots?) was a broken green gem, looking like a fragment of something else. Its facets had the aspect of a serpent's scales. Closer was a page of dense writing in a dark red ink. The script was crowded and hard to make out, but even so, she could decipher that it didn't look to be written in any earthly language. Nearest her, almost within reach, was what looked to be an Egyptian necklace, an amulet, wrought in silver with ebony inlay. It bore the image of a sacred cat-- Black Cat was more than familiar with how the ancient Egyptians had treated cats as representatives of the gods-- and the cat's eyes were clearly diamonds.

Black Cat could see other valuables in the room, but before she could survey them. She heard a voice in her head, loud and jarring, following the mutant witch's words: LEAVE OR DIE.

Just as the voice-- Selene's mental message, she was sure of it-- spoke in her mind, the warmth in the room ignited. Black Cat saw a wide half circle of flame, centered on her and the open door, appear on the ground. Then, from the ground, the flames rose like a wall.

Within the circular wall of flame, she could reach the amulet, and maybe even the page of text, but not the green gem. There were other cases she could probably get to as well, but flames made it more difficulty to make them out without concentrating, so assessing their relative worth would take precious seconds. And if she tried to grab something, could Selene see her through the flames that were causing beads of sweat to run down Black Cat's face?

"That should restore our privacy," Selene said to Doom on the other side of the flames, an almost casual tone to her voice despite the unnatural inferno. "I'm certain you'll understand my precaution with the illusion, your majesty." Then Selene switched to Ancient Greek, following Doom's lead. "Now, where were we?"

Meanwhile, Black Cat then realized the wide arc of the fiery wall had begun to contract. It was shrinking, as if to consume her in flames or force her out the room...

OOC: Selene is trying to create a Fiery Deterrent complication on Black Cat.
Solo d8 + Sorceress of Ancient Rome d8 + Master Sorcery d10 + Menace Expert d8 = d10,3d8
(EDIT: Accidentally rolled 2d10,2d8 instead of d10,3d8 the first time. Had to re-roll it, trading an awesome roll for a crappy one.
01:13, Today: Selene rolled using d10,3d8 with rolls of 3,6,3,2 to REROLL (correctly this time) attempt to complicate out Black Cat.

6+3+3 (spending d8 Doom to enhance roll) = Total 12, d8 Effect to inflict FIERY DETERRENT Complication on Black Cat-- Black Cat, roll to avoid!

Dammit. It would be just her luck, that she of all people would stumble upon this little rendezvous of super powers. Dr. Doom was near infamous at this point, but his partner... Felicia didn't know her, but just being in her presence sent chills down her spine from the intimidating aura she radiated. There was little time to act. Her eyes darted from one part of the room to the next, eyeing up the various treasures that sat within it. She couldn't help it, her thief's instincts made her want to dive for at least one of them- that amulet in particular looked like quite a valuable trinket, and at the same time, Black Cat couldn't help but be drawn to it somehow.

But she would worry about that after she escaped from the sudden ring of fire around her. Springing upwards, she grabbed onto the top of the door frame and swung back, attempt to throw herself over the flames that threatened to graze her.

Solo d10, World Class Thief 1d4+1PP (getting treasure in the face of such danger is a detriment to her health), Superhuman Reflexes d10, Acrobatics Master d10. 3d10+1d4

God damn my hubris. That complication gets stepped up to a d10.

With a feline-like hiss, Felicia fell flat on her back, a brush with the flames enough to cause her to withdraw. This was not going to be easy. Jumping back onto her feet, she took a few steps backwards- as far as she could given the flames closing in on her- and made another attempt.

Felicia is attempting to remove the complication that's just been given to her.

Solo d10, World Class Thief d8 (d8 now, because she's using her skills primarily to escape rather than her thief's intuition telling her to steal), Superhuman Reflexes d10, Acrobatics Master d10.

15:47, Today: Black Cat rolled 17,4 using 3d10,1d8 with rolls of 7,8,2,4. Attempt to remove complication.

The cat's agility that Doctor Strange's magic had cursed her with made for incredible jumping prowess. Black Cat could scale a building in record time and beat an olympian with her high jump or long jump. And while the flame was not high enough to stop her...or wouldn't have been if it was a normal fire, it was anything but.

The second Black Cat was over it, she was blasted with the rising flames that jumped to stop her. Whatever spell or psychic power Selene had used to manipulate the fire was enchanted into a wall. At least she could count herself safe with the exception of a few burnt stray hairs on her costume.

Doom watches the flames with casual interest before turning back to his lovely hostess and continues in ancient greek "Selene, I would not be so crass as to steal from you or your club when here as your guest.  Why would I sully my honor when I could just purchase what I want, or discuses matters with the new owners should they be foolish enough to outbid me."

Taking a moment to drape his cloak over one arm before continuing "What I propose is an exchange of information to start, I could share what I've learned of Earth's mystic situation.  You could share what you know of the situation as well as the information you so graciously offered already.  Maybe the alliance could go further than that should be in our mutual benefit."

Looking around to the flames that have hidden the artifacts.  "Then maybe you would be so kind as to tell me of the artifacts.  If they are true, I would be willing to pay to add them to my collection.  Knowing what to bid on tomorrow would be appreciated."

Re: What If?: Act 2, Scene 1
Solo d8 + Sorceress of Ancient Rome (she's negotiated with demons and elder gods) d8 + Psych Expert d8 = 3d8

23:35, Today: Selene rolled using 3d8 with rolls of 3,8,3. Reacting to Doom's alliance-building.

8+3 = Total: 11, Effect: d8

Close but not quite a success for Doom. The alliance is near to being sealed, but there is still some negotiating to be done.

"I think exchanging your knowledge of Earth's mystical peril for my knowledge of the artifacts on auction is a fairer trade, Your Majesty," Selene demurred, her Attic Greek more formal and yet flowing more easily than that of Doom-- who, after all, had mastered the language but never spent decades fully immersed in a place where it was actually spoken. "After all, I suspect you know more of the thinning of dimensional barriers since the... fall of our Sorcerer Supreme than I do, and I would not seek to cheat you. Odd, don't you think, that a new Sorcerer Supreme has not yet arisen?" Though her words did not betray it, her intent was clear: to express that she knew more of the mystical score than Doom expected, and to confirm that she knew Dr. Strange's "death" was a hoax.

The ancient mutant's fiery trap roared, as the flames billowed higher to keep Black Cat boxed in.

"This one provides some entertainment, does she not?" Selene mused. "While I see much benefit to an arrangement with the illustrious Victor Von Doom, there is one benefit in particular that I seek: One of the artifacts on auction tomorrow. I wish to acquire it, but I wish no one to know that I have acquired it. Obviously, no one dares look too deeply into the disposition of any treasure once the feared and respected monarch of Latveria claims it for his own.

"The ring on offer, you see, is the object that has my interest. Obviously, you and I both know the Mandarin has never been near it. This ring is, in fact, a piece of an ancient device, developed in the land you would call Egypt, but from a time when the Sphinx was still a work in progress. It was an ancient navigation piece of sorts, a sort of primitive astrolabe. The ring is a crucial piece of this primitive device for plotting one's way by the stars. If you acquire the ring for me, with no one knowing that I have acquired it, I offer you a secret that will keep Mephisto from hounding your family once and for all.

"This transaction could be the centerpiece of our alliance. The question is, how does each of us know we can each trust the other with stakes of such great personal import?"

The issue was complicated. The onus was on the dread Latverian Lord now, not only to convince Selene that he could be trusted to keep their bargain, but that there was some way he could trust her. For if he did not trust her, she could not be satisfied that he wouldn't turn on her at the last moment, just for the sake of security. Clearly, whatever the significance of that ring, the immortal sorceress wanted it very badly-- bad enough to take her chances with the most dangerous would-be conqueror on Earth.

Re: What If?: Act 2, Scene 1
Black Cat had a limit to her patience, and frankly, she wasn't sure which at the moment frustrated her more: Selene mocking her, or the two of them going about their business as if they didn't even know that she was there. The flames had singed her slightly, her uniform now dry and brittle in places where the fire had lingered for too long. However, she certainly couldn't sit around and do nothing all day, she had to get out. So once again, she crouched, and lunged in an attempt to drive through the flames.

Solo d10, World Class Thief d8, Superhuman Reflexes d10, Acrobatics Master d10.

11:20, Fri 07 Mar 2014: Black Cat rolled 20,2 using 3d10,d8 ((4,6,10,2)).

I'll spend 1PP to add an additional die to my roll.

I'd prefer a d10 effect, but beggars can't be choosers.

OOC Reaction: Doom Pool + d10 Complication = 2d10,d8,2d6

21:24, Today: Conan the Accuser, for the NPC Doom Pool, rolled using 2d10,d8,2d6 with rolls of 9,1,6,3,5, reacting to Black Cat's attempt to remove the complication.

9+6 = 15 Total, d8 Effect
OPPORTUNITY AVAILABLE

If I'd rolled anything but a "1" on that other d10, the complication would just be stepped down (because I could've used a d10 effect die), but instead, BC beats the Doom Pool by 5, stepping up her effect die and removing the complication entirely.

The Black Cat dove straight through the fiery wall in an acrobatic lunge... and the flames vanished. Her costume was no longer singed or cracked, she was none the worse for wear. She realized the fire hadn't been real; it was all some kind of magical illusion.

Without the enchantment to bar her way, Black Cat was confronted once again with the menacing woman. Freaking Doctor Doom was in here, yet somehow, her instincts told this scantily clad woman in black was the one she should be most frightened of.

The woman turned, surprise and anger dawning on her face. A red glow began to issue from her eyes and limn her hands. Selene chanted in a tongue that had been old when Babylon was young; Black Cat's intuition told her that whatever the witch unleashed next would be more than an illusion.

However, whatever she was conjuring, it was taking a moment. There was an opening here. Black Cat saw the items within grasp, and was glad she'd taken the time to size them up before. Nearby, in their separate featured cases, were the green serpentine gem, the page of prehistoric script, and the Egyptian cat amulet. Also within reach were more priceless treasures, though seemingly less valued by the Hellfire Club: Atlantean pearls spotting a coral sceptre, a Ming vase painted with what looked like a giant robot standing over an ancient city, a half-golden statue of the villain Diablo, the head-dress of the hierophant of a Moloid cult.

The burglar realized she had enough time to grab something quickly and get out of the room, but if she got greedy, she would be facing the sorceress's wrath again... and possibly Doctor Doom.

(OOC: Black Cat, since you eliminated the complication, you have the option of scooping up one item and going back to the hallway-- to get more, you'll have to stay in the room and do some more rolling.)

Re: What If?: Act 2, Scene 1
Finally, perhaps luck was on her side, after all. There were so many grand treasures in here, she would have loved to arrive a little bit earlier and peek among them at her leisure. And if Dr. Doom and Selene were mere Hellfire Thugs, the young thief certainly would have tried her luck. However, that was quite obviously not the case. Making a beeline for that cat amulet, Felicia ripped it from its perch and, with a single fluid motion, spun around and darted out of the room.

Why that amulet, when surely there were more priceless items in the room? Well, buyers were always eager to get a piece of such an ancient and revered civilization, and perhaps Black Cat felt something from it, given her feline "heritage".

Breaking through the threshold of the doorway, Felicia made another quick turn on her heel and darted towards the staircase that lead to the roof. Her work here was done, for now, so her main concern was getting out alive.

Re: What If?: Act 2, Scene 1
"What the--!?" Randall shot-out after the barabarian grabbed the ancient tome under his arm. The book was ancient and contained powerful secret techniques dating-back over 800 years, ally-of-convenience or not, he didn't trust Conan enough with that kind of treasure. He needed to help guarantee their exit so he could get it back. It was bad enough those Crane Sisters were able to steal it from him in the first place...

With that, the former Immortal Weapon of K'un Lun ran after the Hyborean, a .45 automatic in each hand. Twisting-around as he moved forward, his hands & pistols began to glow with the golden power of Shou-Lao the Undying, releasing unfettered, ballistic chaos at any who would seek to spy on his retreat. Or destroy those foolish-enough to try and make chase...

OOC: Iron Fist is going to roll against the Doom Pool to create an asset I'll call "Escaping Through the Fog of Battle," which will hopefully enable both he and Conan to leave the Hellfire Club's mansion behind.

Dice Pool = Buddy d8, Ex-Immortal Weapon d8, Enhanced Reflexes d8, Weapons 2d10 (SFX-All or Nothing: spending 1PP to both Step-Up and Double dice w/ Weapons), & Combat Master d10. So I'm rolling 3d8 & 3d10.

16:50, Thu 13 Mar 2014: Iron Fist rolled 17,16 using 3d8,3d10 ((3,6,8,8,3,5)).

No opportunities rolled, I'm shocked! LOL. Anyhoo, I'll take a 16 with a d10 Effect.

Sorry, Iron Fist, I totally forgot that you had asked for a doom pool roll. We have a house rule that you can roll your own doom pool opposition for simple stuff like this to keep things going, so feel free to do that in the future, but I'd be glad to take care of it this time.

D6 for Iron Fist's physical stress, doom pool 2D6, D8, D10. Magik, for the NPC the doom pool, rolled 3d6,d8,d10 with rolls of 5,6,6,1,5 to oppose Iron Fist's asset. 1 opportunity if you want it. Total: 12, Effect: D10.

Iron Fist succeeds in creating an asset. Feel free to further narrate your success, or if Conan gets here first, he can take his turn.

Re: What If?: Act 2, Scene 1
The door at the end of the hall led to stairs, which in turn led back up to the storage room where Conan had first entered, and where he had met Black Cat. With the tome still under one arm, Conan charged at that door and practically tore it from its hinges with his hasty strength.

The doorknob tore into an oversized painting on the wall, of a man in sorcerous garb, labeled "Hiram Shaw." The ornate knob became lodged in the canvas as it ripped, holding the door open.

I must help the one called Randall escape, he thought, still under the martial artist's mental influence. And the black-clad burglar vixen as well. Conan felt he had to do more than just escape; he had to do it in such a way that others could follow.

The Cimmerian utilized the map in his head to figure the quickest way not only out of the mansion, but to escape from the rooftop once he reached it. This was a difficult proposition, as the mansion was massive and built to impress with its very size. Multiple plans presented themselves, but in the end, Conan just went his gut.

As he reached the storage room, he jammed his sword through the plastic ring at the center of an enormous spooled fire hose. He rolled the giant spool toward the exit leading out to the roof, like a great wheel.

His plan was the quickest he could think of, but as risky as it was fast. There was little time to second-guess it. Conan knew that in less than half a minute, he would either already have escaped, or be in throes of death. Whether that death came from guards shooting their projectile weapons up from the street level, or by a sudden fall to the grounds below.

(OOC: Rolling to create an "Escape Plan" asset.

Team d8 + Expansive Four Story Manor d4 (+1PP) (makes it harder to plan a good way out) + Enhanced Strength d10 (the door and the firehose, stepped up with A Thief, A Reaver, A Slayer SFX) + Weapon d8 (rolling the spool) + Crime Expert d8 (making a getaway) + 3D Mansion Map Asset d8 = d10,4d8,d4

23:47, Today: Conan the Accuser rolled using d10,4d8,d4 with rolls of 8,1,8,8,1,3. To create Escape Plan asset.

8+8+3 (spending 1 PP) = 19, d10 Effect

I used the PP I had just earned from the negative Scene Distinction. And now, per our agreed upon rules, rolling my own Doom Pool opposition:

00:15, Today: Conan the Accuser, for the NPC Doom Pool, rolled using 2d10,d8,2d6 with rolls of 3,3,5,1,6. To oppose Conan's asset creation.

5+6 = 11, d10 Effect

Conan wins, and his Effect die steps up +1, granting him a d12 Escape Plan asset.

OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE: Conan rolled 2 opportunities, if the Doom Pool wants them.)

Re: What If?: Act 2, Scene 1
Doom was amused at seeing the Hellfire Club burglarized before his eyes, but also saw an opportunity.

"Perhaps our alliance would be more acceptable to me if you were able to deal with intruders more effectively," Doom said. "Or if you did not seem so content to permit their intrusion. Perhaps you have gone too long without refreshment? Perhaps I should assist you."

Doom called to mind a bit of black magic that would allow him to test the nature of Selene's mutant vampirism. How akin was she to the supernatural vampires that had long plagued the peasants of Eastern Europe? Was she like enough to them to gain sustenance from the Crimson Constellations of Criamon?

The spell was cast before Selene took her eyes off of the door where Black Cat had departed. The incantation was originally intended to draw false life energy drawn from distant, dying stars, a slow and uncertain process crafted by desparet necormancers of long past ages, but Doom had modified it once, long ago, for another questionable alliance. He was able to take the energy of his armor's own energy blasts and convert it into another, mystical form, creating the same effect much more reliably.

Arteries of red energy flashed around the mutant for mere split-seconds, like vermilion lightning. Doom discharged laser blasts from his own armor, condensed into the infrared spectrum, and the energy vessels blinked into visibility again, engorged with energy. This spell would've temporarily fed a true vampire. Would the same effect happen with a vampiric mutant?

OOC: Doom is trying to create a Vampiric Boost asset for Selene.

Solo d10 + Failure is For Lesser Beings d4 (Doom's arrogance is leading him to take a risk that could potentially backfire) + Energy Blast d10 + Plans Within Plans SFX d6 + Master Sorcery d10 + Mystic Master d10 = 4d10,d6,d4

11:24, Today: Conan the Accuser, on behalf of Doom, rolled 27,6,2 using 4d10,d6,d4 with rolls of 5,10,9,3,6,2. to create asset.

10+9=19,d12 Effect (stepped up by SFX)

Re: What If?: Act 2, Scene 1
"An unpleasant effect, the Crimson Constellations," Selene whispered, even as her eyes closed and the temporary ecstasy of her life drain clearly overwhelmed her senses, if only for a second. "Rather like taking wine that has aged too long and slurping it from a housemaid's wash-bucket. And yet, I find your variant intriguing... and invigorating."

"I am happy I could help," Doom answered. So, she was not unlike the vampires he had purged from Latveria after all. Doom was confident he could defeat her, if it came to it. And now that he had made a gesture of trust by empowering her, their alliance could proceed. But he couldn't resist needling her, wanting to see how she would handle the situation. "As a token of our mutually beneficial arrangement. Perhaps now you will show less docility in the face of this pilferer's impertinence..."

"This impertinence could work in my favor," Selene answered. "You mistake my curiosity for tolerance. The item she has taken is cursed, and she will not find it easy to be rid of it... But mostly, I am curious to try this..." Selene produced an illuminated paper, clearly a page from a book of some centuries age. Not so old as the Darkhold, to be sure, but covered in dark writings that showed the influence of that more ancient blasphemous tome. "A page torn from the Codex Draculesti, not long ago, when the Lord of Vampires himself was temporarily defeated by the daywalker known as Blade. Unfortunately for Blade, he trusted the wrong occult bookhound in London. It is said Count Dracula used this particular incantation to ensure than any thieves brave and skilled enough to penetrate his sanctum turned their talents to his service. But surely one who shows such familiarity with the sorcery of the undead as to rewrite the Crimson Constellations of Criamon is well aware of this particular effect? The Thieving Hands of Endless Night?"

Doom was actually impressed. If Selene held what she claimed in her hands, her machinations were subtle indeed, and she was not so ham-fisted in her acquisitions as most of her ilk. "An experiment, then? With this interloping woman as the guinea pig?"

Selene did not speak in answer. Instead, she smiled. In her hands, the letters on the page in her hands began to glow. Still shimmering with the energies she had been granted by Doom, the immortal mutant gazed upon the unique spell before her and laughed with an evil laugh that was old when civilization was young.

At the beginning of her action, Selene takes d6 Mental Stress to keep the asset Doctor Doom just gave her from stepping down per her Limit.

Selene is grandstanding this turn with her Vampiric Boost asset, contributing d12 to the Doom Pool.

She selects herself to go next...

Re: What If?: Act 2, Scene 1
New Round: A new Threat joins the scene this round-- Spending d6 Doom to add the ancient cursing spell known as The Thieving Hands of Endless Night! (See Datafile under CAST.)

"A guinea pig? Yes, indeed a guinea pig... But she won't be the only one. All who have penetrated my erstwile home intent on perfidy this night shall be cursed and tainted... And when they finally succumb to the gentle embrace of undeath, they will become mine forever!"

Selene's voice rent the very air as she read out the incantation. Doom could feel a formidable power gathering... Surely this truly was a ritual from the legendary spellbook of Dracula. It was fortunate, Doom decided, that he and his allies had decided to inflitrate the auction tomorrow, rather than any of them attempting to break in themselves and steal artifacts directly. Otherwise, any who had penetrated the Hellfire Club's defenses tonight would be subject to the same effect.

The casting of Selene's spell ended, the air smelling of tomb-dust and ozone, and a low growling hum hanging in the air. Thunder clapped in the distance on this cloudless night. Dogs all over the city began to howl.

"Those who have invaded my home with theft in their hearts will learn a terrible lesson tonight. And soon they will serve the dark goddess of Nova Roma... serve me body and soul!"

At the beginning of the round, Selene takes d6 more Mental Stress to keep the Vampiric Boost asset from stepping down per her Limit, bringing her Mental Stress to d8. She expresses her this in her power-mad, maniacal cackling, like a classic comic book villain.

Selene is grandstanding this turn with her Vampiric Boost asset, contributing d12 to the Doom Pool.

Re: What If?: Act 2, Scene 1
Conan reached the edge of the roof, and the hurled the fire-hose spool with all of his might. Then he leapt for the outer all.

The powerful thews of his legs sprang like coiled vipers. He cleared it.

Catching the unspooled fire-hose and using it to slow his fall to the ground on the other side, the Cimmerian made it to the street. That done, he used his preternaturally sharp alien blade to pin the hose to the wall, pulling it tight to assure his comrades' escape.

The man called Orson Randall followed. He stepped onto the taut fire-hose like an acrobat onto to a tightrope. Instead of balancing slowly, he called upon his training and his chi, and ran across the entire stretched length of hose at full speed, firing behind him as he ran to cover his escape, then ran down the wall.

The Black Cat came last, but she traversed the hose even faster than the veteran wielder of the Iron Fist. She produced a length of smooth cord, threw it over the hose, and grasped each end. Then she tumbled over the side of the roof, holding her cord overhead as it slid down the hose to the outer wall. When she reached the wall, she put out her legs and caught herself, then pushed again to flip backwards over the wall and land, like any cat, on her feet.

It was a spectacular escape, and they ran off down the street, beyond the reach of the guards.

Then, they felt it.

Within them, their souls convulsed. Distant thunder sounded, then a sound like the earth itself was a growling, wounded beast caged beneath the pavement. Soon, it was followed by the howling of dogs.

They felt themselves accursed, life draining from them, some horrid force transforming them.

They had not become vampires, far from it, but they were not fully human either. Not anymore.

(OOC: Per the Insidious Curse SFX. when the 2d12 is spent to end the scene, I am spending a doom die to inflict a d6 Vampire Curse complication on any character who has participated in trespassing or theft that scene.

Iron Fist, Black Cat, Conan: Each take a d6 Vampire Curse complication. This complication does not vanish at the end of a scene, but instead steps up each time a scene ends.)
