Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

The Efreeti were a strange and ancient people, but they were still people, and their cities were laid out according to plans.  Agon drew upon his knowledge of engineering to find hidden back routes and arcano-industrial accessways.

15:05, Today: Agon rolled 39 using 1d20+29 with rolls of 10.  dungeoneering.

Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

Sonliin thought a bit about one of his visits to the city of Brass. "Let see if I remember this part of the city. I think if we go up two blocks, there was a covered part of the section that might shield us from aerial observers. It should be next to the Iron Bull tavern. The food sucked but it had a pretty good selection of beers. The townfolk tended to avoid the area since there was a gang of thieves that operated there, until two years ago when the city cleared them out.."

20:46, Today: Sonliin rolled 33 using 1d20+18 with rolls of 15.  Insight.

Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

Running ahead of the rest of the group, Darratheir was able to use Harald and Sonliin's knowledge to check different places where they could find patrols or garrisons so he could then orientate his companions to safer routes.

11:32, Today: Darratheir Burnedbear rolled 43 using 1d20+24 with rolls of 19.  Athletics Roll.

Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

Martha agrees with Agon’s engineering-led approach. ‘We need to thank life an Efreeti to understand how this city works’. Years of hatching sinister deals with all types of Tiamat’s monstrous allies have provided Martha with an exceptional ability to empathise with strange creatures, and find common points of reference.

‘Not that way’, she warns as the party almost take a turn into a very rough area, with gang signs carved into the brasswork. ‘It feels unsafe. Try to the right path’.

15:25, Today: Martha rolled 32 using 1d20+27 with rolls of 5.  Insight.

Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

You make your way through the Pyraculum quarter of the city now. The City Market in this commercial sector is larger and more controlled than the Commoner’s Market in Avencina. Many of the city’s artisans make their homes here. Of all the lower-class wards, only Pyraculum has managed to stay free of lockdown. The air above the ward is thick with patrolling dragons. This makes it all the more ironic when you weave through the streets taking advantage of Agon's ability to fly for a long stretch of it, even though you never go up so much.

You soon reach the wall of your ultimate destination, the Furnance.  The wall protecting the inner tier of the Furnace stands some hundred feet tall, a great barrier of basalt and slate whose surface roils with heat and smoke. A huge flight of steps rises from an open courtyard to the gate itself—twin brass valves 50 feet high, their surface flaring with a molten glow. An enormous red dragonspawn slouches by the stairs, its black eyes watching for any sign of trouble. A half-dozen salamanders pace around it, with more walking the wall high above.

Beyond the wall, the dark lines of the Charcoal Palace of the efreets is suddenly lit by a storm of lightning heralding the arrival of the gargantuan blue dragon you saw before. This must be the exarch that Bahamut named as Namissi, descending now to the roof of the palace. Millennia-old elemental stone shudders beneath him as he perches atop a parapet like a bloated crow. His long neck whips side to side, scanning the city as he roars in rage.

The good news is that not a lot of people will be paying attention to you if you break you way into the gate...

What do you do? You can telepathically discuss before you do anything else, of course.

Monster knowledge checks would be one Nature and two Arcana.

"OK folks.  Whit's the plan" sent Harald to the group.  "Ah dinny fancy mixin' it wi' yon big blue lad but maybe we could sneak through while he is struttin' his stuff.  Whit dae ye think?"

Not much point Harald rolling Nature or Arcana.  If everybody else fails he could maybe take a stab at nature but not otherwise.

Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

Looking up at Namissi, Sonliin is rather impressed at the size of the creature and also of the fact that the group is one step closer at dealing with the Dragon Queen as he called up what he knew in his mind concerning the horde of creatures in the plaza.

21:26, Today: Sonliin rolled 32 using 1d20+27 with rolls of 5.  Arcana.

Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

As Darratheir's eyes caught the big blue dragon, he felt the Arrow of Fate pulsing in his hands. He also felt the rage and the envy to kill the creature raising inside his body, intensified by his need to quit this city and this plane to go back to nature. The starting discussion made him look at Harald and Grompley, momentarily forgetting Namissi. "Whatever the method, we need to get closer to this blue beast. We can't let him live longer."

"Dinny be daft, man" urged Harald, looking at Darratheir's face.  He knew that look and nearly had the same mien.  "There's hundreds o' the damn beasts aroond.  We cannae fight them a'.  Remember it's yon Tiamat we're after, no' her boot boys."

He turned to Gromley.  "Gin ye can sneak us past that lot, Ah suggest we get on wi' it."

Darratheir grumbled, knowing that Harald was true and that they were way to far from the Blue dragon to do anything at the moment. "Ah. Let's move on past this creature if we can. I always like a good fight but if we can spare our force, that's better."

Zog shrugs. In his mind, he says to the others, "I think we can sneak past, most likely. Most of us. Harald, why don't you and Martha ride on Agon's floating disk, since you're most likely to bump around. The rest of us can try our hands--or feat--sneaking."

Gromley gets off his own floating disk, which he has been travelling around on from the first day he had met everybody. It may come to a surprise that his legs actually do work...even to Gromley himself. "Here's another disk to use." He said.

Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

'We need a diversion', Martha realises. The experience of years of evil scheming lets her find an opportunity fast. She spots some inexperienced rebels, plotting against Tiamat and the efreeti king. Bait.

'I could easily get them to try something', she whispers to the others. 'It would fail, of course, and they would die, but it would be a perfect distraction. The stakes are so high, now, that we need to make hard choices. Do I have your consent?', she asks, looking especially to Sonllin and Zog for confirmation of her plan, before proceeding.

"Funny, I was thinking along those lines myself." Sonliin said. "Someone that has no problem evading them could draw them away from here so that those that can be heard a mile away, like Harald and myself would be able to bypass them."

Zog scratches his chin. "Well, I have an idea. I can change shape, yes? What if I ducked out naked shaped like a different kind of humanoid, rushed back, changed shape and threw on clothing, then followed you out? They would be looking for something like me, but not. I'm quite good at such maneuvers, actually."

Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

In the interest of moving this along assuming you use Zog as a distraction:

Zog, make me a Bluff and a Stealth check.

Gromley, make an Arcana check.

Darratheir and Agon, make a Stealth check with a +2 bonus.

Martha, Harald and Sonliin, each of you make either an Endurance, Athletics or Acrobatics check.
