Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

Martha doesn't find anyone she can manipulate in the area, but she does recall what some of these rebels would look like and coaches Zog into imitating one. He then strips, runs out and hurls a series of insults at the salamanders and the dragon-kin that are too hard to ignore. He then springs back into hiding and rejoins the others, who turn invisible and sneak past this gate with little difficulty!

Full experience for defeating the encounter. That was brilliant :-)

You make your way invisibly through the Barracks of the Ring of Fire, where you go to look for the lord of the city whom you have agreed to destroy. The barracks of the elite Ring of Fire are likely well defended at the best of times, but the efreets have redoubled their e orts in preparation for siege. A wall of elemental stone has been raised around the barracks complex. Its single entrance is guarded by a dozen efreets.

Arcana checks. If anyone hits 50, nobody else needs roll. No bennies on this one.

Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

Before you go blundering in, Gromley and Agon identify wards around the perimeter of the buildings that negate invisibility. Gromley's useful Mind Blank won't help you here. This is almost certainly the place where you will find your target, though...

Discuss your plan telepathically among yourselves!

Gromley looks around at the others-who are all able to see themselves and the rest of the group. Only those outside the Mind blank zone will see nothing. So-can we undo the anti-invisibility wards without setting off any alarms? He asked everyone telepathically.

Harald shrugged and picked at his teeth, finding something unmentionable between his 2 front teeth , he plucked it out, looked at it, and popped it back in.  A quick chew and whatever it was, was gone.

"Ah don't know much aboot yon magic stuff, so youse yins just talk amang yerselves an' Ah'll fit in wi' whatever ye decide.  In the meantime Ah'll keep a lookout for onything that might be sneakin' up on us."

He chortled, happy with himself and the worlds.

"If we can't be invisible, we must either sneak our way to our target or use another diversion to free the path." added Darratheir after Harald had "cleaned" his teeth. "But how long will this trick be usable ?" The Dragonborn was concerned with the fact that they might find smarter foes as they approached their destination and it could be harder to move without a fight... What would be just as great for him.

Zog shakes his head. "Gentlemen, I think we're over-thinking this. This is the very place where we are meant to confront this Bashumgarda and take him down. We're not going to succeed in sneaking in like assassins. I say we call him out and take him down."

(All telepathically, of course.)

"Don't tell me twice that I can rush there and kill every creature I meet until this Tiamat's puppet show himself because this is all I'm waiting." answered Darratheir eagerly. He was already taking a position that would allow him to jump into a fight at the first go he would get from his companions.

Sonliin looked over the wards, trying to scan them to get an idea as to what they were and see if there was a possibility for way around them.

Not going to touch them, just see what they are so we know what to expect.

Gormley sends out another telepathic message to the group. While I might be able to sneak up the the wards and disarm them, I could not do so while invisible,  and I must stay invisible to maintain the mind blank around most of us.

Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

Agon & Gromley can inform you that you can get within 40' of the wall of elemental stone surrounding the Ring of Fire before you become visible.

You will very comfortably have a surprise round to attack with. Also, you can make 3 Arcana checks to learn about the enemies. To save everyone time, Agon should roll first (given his superlative modifier) and if he does poorly Gromley or Zog can roll.

Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

Agon succeeded in identifying all the enemies. I'll let him chime in.

Terrain Features:
Ceiling: 30 feet high.
Illumination: The City of Brass is brightly lit day and night.
Wall of Elemental Stone: The barracks com- plex of the Ring of Fire has been surrounded by a cordon of elemental stone for protection. This rough stone wall is 60 feet high, 10 feet thick, and can be climbed with a DC 19 Athletics check. Any creature that comes into contact with the wall or starts its turn there is pummeled by the wall and subject to an attack: +33 vs. Reflex; 3d8 + 10 damage, and the target falls from the wall and is knocked prone. A creature that falls from the wall takes additional fall- ing damage as normal.
The heroes are free to fly over the wall, but they draw ranged attacks and will be pursued by the ground forces here. The total flying distance from one side of the wall to the other is 130 feet (26 squares).
Rubble These areas of loose scree are difficult terrain. A creature that runs, charges, or makes a double move through rubble must make a DC 20 Acrobatics check or fall prone.
Rubble Pile Fallen rock and debris are piled to a height of 10 feet. A rubble pile must be climbed with a DC 15 Athletics check. Remember, if you have a modifier of +14 or higher, you do NOT have to roll.
Elemental Vent Vents jetting pure elemental energy dot the area before the wall. Any creature that ends its turn adjacent to an elemental vent takes 3d6 + 6 cold, fire, and lightning damage. A creature that enters an elemental vent or starts its turn there takes 3d10 + 10 cold, fire, and lightning damage, and is stunned (save ends).  Each round on initiative count 0, roll a d10 for each elemental vent. On a roll of 10, the vent flares up unpredictably. Any creature adjacent to the vent takes 3d8 + 8 fire damage.
Building: Buildings adjacent to the area are of stone construction and from 30 to 50 feet high. Bashumgarda and his Ring of Fire guards do not retreat into the barracks complex, but the characters are welcome to. If they do, expand the tactical map with efreet-sized stone furnishings as appropriate.

Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

"The flamerunners and magmacasters are dangerous enough, but those pyremasters are the real threat. They may try to drag you into the elemental vents." Agon pointed out each of the enemies they face.  He brought up a ward, a sudden chill settling over everyone skin even in the heart of the city of brass.  "This will hold against all but the strongest gout of flame. Now let's conquer for Bahamut!"

OOC: Mass Resistance: Entire party gains Resist Fire 13 Until End of Encounter

17:26, Today: Agon rolled 29 using 1d20+23 with rolls of 6.  initiative.
