Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

Seeing so many foes in one place, Gromley focuses through his projected awareness.  A large portal opens under the massed foes before the building. Dozens of tendrils come from the portal, wrapping around any foe they can catch and glowing with eldritch power. Some foes are too nimble to catch, but the portal remains open, and the tendrils lash out at any foe within reach.

(OOC-Using Far realm's embrace. Starting square in under F10's SE corner of its tolken.

From that spot creates a burst 3 effect. Int vs reflex vs M1, M2, M6, F4-7, F9, F10, & P2.

23:29, Today: Gromley Underhill rolled 40,39,34,35,49,32,49,44,36,34 using 1d20+30,1d20+30,1d20+30,1d20+30,1d20+30,1d20+30,1d20+30,1d20+30,1d20+30,1d20+30 with rolls of 10,9,4,5,19,2,19,14,6,4.  Far Realms embrace vs M1, M2, M6, F4-F7, F9, F10, P2.

Hits M1, F5, F7, F9.

All others are misses

Spending a Bennie to hit  P2, and crits.

Those that are hit take the following effect.
Hit-20 psi damage, target is restrained and takes 10 ongoing psi damage
(save ends both)

Those that are missed take the following effect
Miss-10 Psi, and target is slowed and takes 10 ongoing psi damage
(save ends both)

P2 takes a total of 48 Psi damage, is restrained and takes 10 ongoing psi damage
(save ends both)

The effect also creates a zone.
Effect-Burst creates a zone. Zone last until the end of user's next turn.
As long as zone is in effect, gets attack on any creature starting its turn
in zone.
Trigger-Creatures starts turn in zone, or adj to zone.
Int vs Reflex.
Hit=10+int mod damage, zone pulls target 2 square into zone, target is
immobilized. (Save ends)
Sustain minor: User takes 5 psi damage and zone lasts another turn.

M12 will take the above effect on the start of its next turn, as its starting adj. to zone.
Those already in zone due to hit or misses will be attacked before they get their actions.

Gromley will sustain zone next turn, but it does not do enough damage to him to bypass his Psi resistance.

23:31, Today: Gromley Underhill rolled 24 using 5d6 with rolls of 6,5,6,1,6.  Crit damage.
23:31, Today: Gromley Underhill rolled 20 using 2d6+12 with rolls of 5,3.  Damage.
23:30, Today: Gromley Underhill rolled 50 using 1d20+30 with rolls of 20.  vs P2 Bennie re-roll.)

Per your zone, Gromley, I need your attack roll on P2 as he starts his turn in your zone.

In reply to EpicOne (msg # 466):

Ooc-17:02, Today: Gromley Underhill rolled 33 using 1d20+30 with rolls of 3.  free trigger attack on P2. Even with P2 being restrained I don't think his reflex is reduced that low.

Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

The pyromancer engaged with Martha strikes and gashes her with his spiked scimitar, which hurts her leg.

Gromley’s otherworldly tentacles destroy a few of the flamerunners and leaves the wounded one reeling a bit. The pyromancer caught in the tentacles fails to get away, but he does fire up a wall of fire that drops on top of Martha.

Three other pyromancers appear in the building doorway and fire blasts of fire at Harald that hit him but hurt him minimally.

Gromley missed M1, whose Reflex is 42. You hit F5, F7 and F9. Minions take no damage from a missed attack, even a Daily. Still, lots of ongoing damage, should the minions survive long enough.

P3 double moves. P4 and P5 hit Harald for 17 and 20 fire respectively, which is reduced by his resistance. He also gains more ongoing fire that he ignores.

P1 hits Martha for 23 untyped damage and she is slowed until EOP1’sNT.

Gromley misses P2 with his start-of-turn attack, but P2 takes his ongoing.P2 tries and fails to escape being restrained with a move action.  creates a Wall of Fire that he drops right onto Martha. The wall is 6 squares high and blocks line of sight. The wall’s space is heavily obscured and is difficult terrain. A creature that starts its turn adjacent to the wall takes 10 fire damage. A creature that enters a square of the wall or starts its turn there takes 20 fire damage. Fails save vs. ongoing and restrained.

We will deal with the effects of the zone if the inhabitants survive long enough.

Terrain Features:
Ceiling: 30 feet high.
Illumination: The City of Brass is brightly lit day and night.
Wall of Fire The wall is 6 squares high and blocks line of sight. The wall’s space is heavily obscured and is difficult terrain. A creature that starts its turn adjacent to the wall takes 10 fire damage. A creature that enters a square of the wall or starts its turn there takes 20 fire damage
Wall of Elemental Stone: The barracks com- plex of the Ring of Fire has been surrounded by a cordon of elemental stone for protection. This rough stone wall is 60 feet high, 10 feet thick, and can be climbed with a DC 19 Athletics check. Any creature that comes into contact with the wall or starts its turn there is pummeled by the wall and subject to an attack: +33 vs. Reflex; 3d8 + 10 damage, and the target falls from the wall and is knocked prone. A creature that falls from the wall takes additional fall- ing damage as normal.
The heroes are free to fly over the wall, but they draw ranged attacks and will be pursued by the ground forces here. The total flying distance from one side of the wall to the other is 130 feet (26 squares).
Rubble These areas of loose scree are difficult terrain. A creature that runs, charges, or makes a double move through rubble must make a DC 20 Acrobatics check or fall prone.
Rubble Pile Fallen rock and debris are piled to a height of 10 feet. A rubble pile must be climbed with a DC 15 Athletics check. Remember, if you have a modifier of +14 or higher, you do NOT have to roll.
Elemental Vent Vents jetting pure elemental energy dot the area before the wall. Any creature that ends its turn adjacent to an elemental vent takes 3d6 + 6 cold, fire, and lightning damage. A creature that enters an elemental vent or starts its turn there takes 3d10 + 10 cold, fire, and lightning damage, and is stunned (save ends).  Each round on initiative count 0, roll a d10 for each elemental vent. On a roll of 10, the vent flares up unpredictably. Any creature adjacent to the vent takes 3d8 + 8 fire damage.
Building: Buildings adjacent to the area are of stone construction and from 30 to 50 feet high.

Zog advances and holds up his hand. A bolt of electricity dances on it and then leaps out, jumping from firedancer to firedancer...

Move, then Static Charge--close blast 3 on F1, F11 and F12. Hits F1 and F12 for 10 lightning, and adjacent enemies F11 and F3 take 31 lightning damage each. That should wipe 'em out.

21:48, Today: Zog the Faceless rolled 10 using 2d8 with rolls of 8,2.  Damage on F1, F12.

Zog wipes out all of Harald's convenient targets. Meanwhile, a booming voice can be heard shouting inside the building. It seems Bashumgarda is now aware of your presence...

B double moves.

Agon and Darratheir are up! Note that I've added the Wall of Fire to terrain details.

Note that I'm not allowing you to get Bashumgarda's box text. Arcana checks to get detailed info, but you don't get all the goodies for a unique monster like him.

In a single, fluid move, Darratheir jumped over the wall of Fire to end next to the Pyremaster and before the creature could react, the Dragonborn had already cut a slice in its flank. Trying to find Martha behind the fire, he yeld : "Get away of this inferno if you can. I can deal with him alone a few moment if you need to get around that wall."

Finding the path blocked by the wall of fire, Sonliin transformed into a huge ancient dragon, flying right into the wall. Once he got through it, a bit singed in the process, he continued his travel to the other side. Finding a patch of ground to land, he then drew the foes close to him and unleashed a blast of thunder as he took a defensive stance.

Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

Sonliin destroys almost everything in range of it and wounding the adjacent pyromancer.  The magmacasters left inside the wall turn their attention to the very-visible dragon, blasting him with waves of magical energy and fire!

Because the dicebot was mean and had you hit only minions that would die anyway, I changed the hits to M8 and M9.

I also took off all the magmacasters and flamerunners that are going to die at the beginning of their turns to save you all the trouble of targeting them.

Sonliin takes 7 damage after resistance from the wall and kills a lot of minions, damaging P3.

The remaining Ms attack; one misses, another hits and gives Sonliin Vulnerable 15 fire (save ends). The other two attack; one hits (Reflex 48) for 12 fire and 7 ongoing fire after vulnerability.

Martha and Harald are up! Note that I've added the Wall of Fire to terrain details.

Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

Harald screamed with impatience.  He couldn’t see what was happening on the other side of the inferno.  Eventually he just lowered his head and stalked through it, relying on his newly gifted flame resistance to help him.

Once through he quickly looked around and saw a valid target.  He ignored the minion and wet straight for the Pyremaster with a savage whoop.

“Tak’ that, ya eejit!” he roared as his axe sliced home with terrible force.  In fact such was the force that he knocked the creature back a couple of steps.

“That’s it” he roared, “keep moving.”

He swung again with the aim of not only pushing the beast further but perhaps ecen knocking him to the ground.

OOC:  Move: 7 through the Wall of Fire.
Minor: Check for Targets:
Standard: Minotaur Charge on P2;  CRIT!
Knock him 1 square and follow up.
Secondary attack vs Fort:  sends P2  3 squares backwards and knocks him prone.

Harald will take damage from the Wall of Fire and from the Pyremaster's aura but I don't know how much after his 13 resist.

00:28, Today: Harald Gaptooth rolled 53 using 1d20+34 with rolls of 19.  bennie.  CRIT!

Max normal damage = 45
Plus crit damage = 00:31, Today: Harald Gaptooth rolled 11 using 3d10 with rolls of 2,7,2.  Crit damage.
Plus 20 ongoing damage (save ends)
Push target 1 square and move into vacated square.

0:32, Today: Harald Gaptooth rolled 45 using 1d20+31 with rolls of 14.  Secondary attack vs Fort.  (Actually 47 to hit - forgot the CA)

As Harald woulds a  pyromancer and Martha helps Darratheir, the last flamedancer dies due to Gromley’s psionic zone.

Harald loses 7 temps by moving through the wall of fire, and as stated, Martha loses 2. Harald bloodies P2. F10 dies from ongoing damage.

Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

Gromley finds the minds of his foes rather surprisingly strong.

The pyremancer engaged with Martha gapes for a second at the remarkably fire-proof enemies. “You may be prepared for us, but you will not survive our master,” he quips. He slashes Martha with his scimitar, gashing her.

The badly-wounded pyremancer howls and, staggering to his feet, whips his lash of flame at Harald, but the dwarf is too canny for him. He keeps bleeding and gripping his head. He lets his wall of fire fall.

The pyremancer next to Sonliin is much less glib; he fights like a madman as he tries to free himself from the effects of Gromley’s power. His blade opens gashes on the great dragon’s hide.

A new pyremancer emerges from the building and raises a new wall of fire. “Prepare ye for the coming of Bashumgarda, mortals!”

A final pyremancer also emerges. He takes his fire lash and whips it around Sonliin’s leg, improbably dragging the massive dragon away from his compatriot and binding two of its legs. The fire burns Sonliin despite Agon’s magic for the moment…

P1 hits Martha for 28 hp untyped damage. He has remarkable luck rolling, that one. P2 stands up and attacks Harald with a ranged attack and misses; he fails both his saving throws. He also does not renew his wall of fire. P3 hits Sonliin for 20 hp untyped damage. P4 moves and creates a new wall of fire; Harald and Sonliin will each take 7 fire after resistance at the start of their turn and the blocked line of sight moves accordingly. P5 crits Sonliin for 30 fire damage after resistance and vulnerability and, more importantly, Sonliin gains ongoing 10 fire (superseding his ongoing 5 fire, which still persists) and is immobilized (save ends).

Zog is up!

Zog yelps when the elemental spout next to him spits energy. However, seeing that the fire-wall has moved, he moves closer to the entrance in the stone wall and blasts the visible pyro-mancer with lightning....

Started my turn next to the elemental spout; I took 15 multiple-type damage. Move as on map, hit P1 for 53 lightning damage with Elemental Bolt.

Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

A massive effreet emerges from the building—clearly Bashumgarda.

“You infidels will all fall before me as all do!” he screams. He moves near the dragon, then pointing in the opposite direction and leveling a blast of fire ion top of Harald that blinds the warrior. He then points to the dragon. “You will have the honor of dying first,” he says to Sonliin.

Big B moves, then hits Harald with a blast 2 targeting enemies only that hits Harald for 10 fire damage after resistance, but Harald is also blinded (save ends).

Agon, Darratheir and Sonliin are up! Sonliin takes 7 fire damage for starting his turn after the wall, after fire resistance.

Earing Bashumgarda's threat, Darratheir wanted to end the life of the Pyremaster quickly to engage in a battle with a more worthy enemy. Delivering a large swing with his blade, he hurt the creature but not enough to kill him. Looking at Martha, he said : "Go and help them if you can. I will kill this one shortly."

Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

Agon strode the battlefield like he was pacing before a lecture hall, about to embark on a particularly difficult arcane proof.  From the ground, the wall of fire across the gate blocked his access, but he could see an exchange of fire between the remaining enemies and Zog.  "Let here be equal to there." Agon said, and the next step took him a score of paces to the top of the wall. He looked down at the defenders, and caught a glimpse of a powerful efreet who could only be Bashumgarda engaged with Sonliin. Magic flared as Agon laid down a deadly barrage of lightning. A whoomph of force pinned several of the foes in place.

Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

"I have been dead and came back! Can you say the same?" Sonlinn said as he stared down at the effreet. "You are marked and found wanting, Come and feel the true pain of fire!"   The Blast of light erupted around Sonliin, Blasting those near him. With the burst, the bindings holding him in place dissolved around him.

Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

Agon blasts most of the enemies in sight and then paralyzes a few of them with massive hands of force.

Darratheir gravely wounds one of the non-restrained pyromancers.

Sonliin focuses on Bashumgarda, blasting the leader with an old illusionist’s standby. He rattles the minds of one of the pyromancers and, more importantly, of Bashumgarda himself, and somehow or another actually BURNS them...

The last magmacaster roars his indignation and blasts at Sonliin, needless of danger to himself…

Agon only missed P2 and M5. A Benny was not required to hit B with Crushing Titan’s Fist.

Sonliin misses P3 altogether; he hits the Fort and Will of P1 for no damage (as they’re immune to fire) but P1 is Stunned (save ends). B is hit for 36 poison/slowed, with the fire damage which B is immune to and B is stunned (save ends)!

M5 moves up and hits Sonliin for 12 fire after resist and vulnerable and 5 ongoing fire (save ends).

Martha, Harald and Gromley are up!!

Map: https://docs.google.com/drawin...Q50-wFOAK6P78Lk/edit

Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

Gromley takes control of one of the otherwordly things, and has it move over to its fellow, trying to cut the other being's head clean off.

Then he moves Harald's feet away from the burning wall and over to one of his foes.

(OOC-Using Sudden control on P4 to move and attack P3. Then using noble presence to shift Harald away from flame wall and so he does not take damage. Harald also gets +2 to all defenses

P3 takes 24 non fire damage.

15:06, Today: Gromley Underhill rolled 24 using 2d10+16 with rolls of 6,2.  Non fire damage to P3.
15:06, Today: Gromley Underhill rolled 41 using 1d20+39 with rolls of 2.  P4 attacks P3 with scimitar.
15:02, Today: Gromley Underhill rolled 41 using 1d20+28 with rolls of 13.  Sudden control vs P4.)

Re: Chapter 5--Test of Fire

"Aargh!  I can't see" screamed Harald in frustration.

But then, somehow, he felt himself being moved without his own effort.  He suddenly realised that whoever was doing this, seemed to have dropped him off next to one of the fiery creatures.  And so, despite his blindness, he swung wildly towards the new heat source.

And despite trying as hard as he could, he still could not shake the effect on his eyes.
