Re: Broderick's Expedition

In reply to Clair Leibert (msg # 603):
Each missile  spell has two steps: roll to create/summon tbe missile to hand, and an attack roll to launch it at your opponent.
Trying to fire through the bars of the gate can only be done head on;moving laterally away narrows the field of vision and the path of the projectile until you can't see the target and the projectile ricochets ofcof rhe bars instead of passing through. More than a 5 degree variance ( standing at the edge of the gate with 50% cover) makes it impossible to throw what amounts to being a baseball made of stone.
This is an access gate, one yard by two with one inch bars four inches apart.

Darius summons his preconfigured energies and prepares to unleash them on the Slorn.

Re: Broderick's Expedition

Grimaldi watches the other mages, surprised and impressed at Clair's ability. He hadn't noticed she was also a mage. He would ward off any toxic breath the creature belched forth, and leave the missles to the rest. The archer troll, Rafik that spoke of hunting and killing slorn, would also be of great use at this juncture, Grimaldi thought.

In reply to Narrator (msg # 607):

ooc Yes thank you, my post was modified to reflect the two step attack process. I assumed difficulty of getting the stone missile through the bars is covered by the -4 missile attack which has been applied. As there isn't a map showing where everyone is positioned it's logical to assume she was out of possible area effect of the breath and in a position to fling her stone missile directly at the Slorn, She didn't need to approach the gare which I assumed was glare from the sunbolt to hurl it at the creature?

Re: Broderick's Expedition

Broderick watched on as the Spell weavers plied their enchantments on the Slorn. None of which appeared to have much an effect on the brutish beast. Still their efforts were better than letting the creature past the barrier to wreak havoc among them. Well done my dear. he encouraged always pleased, puzzled and perplexed at the way Clair had of with her mystical abilities.

Re: Broderick's Expedition

With a word of power and a gesture, Darius freed magical energy. Crackling, black ice began to form around the Slorn's extremities, quickly creeping upwards.

[Private to GM:
Roll for preparation:
17:35, Today: Darius Kopaki rolled 18 using 3d6.  Retroactive preparation roll Frozen Bonds vs Elementalism-2, effective skill 15.

Using Luck to reroll. Rerolls are

17:36, Today: Darius Kopaki rolled 13 using 3d6.  Luck reroll 1: Retroactive preparation roll Frozen Bonds vs Elementalism-2, effective skill 15.
17:36, Today: Darius Kopaki rolled 11 using 3d6.  Luck reroll 2: Retroactive preparation roll Frozen Bonds vs Elementalism-2, effective skill 15.

Preparation successful.

Roll to cast
17:38, Today: Darius Kopaki rolled 10 using 3d6.  Frozen Bonds vs Elementalism, effective skill 17.

Edit: Possibly that takes the -4 from the grate? If so, it's only a success by 3.

Results:
- Quick contest vs the Slorn to actually affect it; this is against the higher of HT or will. My own MOS is 7 (roll above).
- If successful, the Slorn will be bound, with the engulfing modifier (BS40): It will have to roll a quick contest of ST vs 24 to break free (this also costs 1 FP). If it does not succeed, it will be unable to do anything but spells and its innate attack. It can repeat that every ten seconds.

In reply to Grimaldi (msg # 612):

Melchizadek is focused on targeting the creatures head with his spell. He aims very carefully through the bars, staying back at a safe distance as close to 90 degrees to the grate and using both hands to aim, he waits until just the right moment to send his bolt at the creatures head. The light beam flashes out well...

[Private to GM: Rolled 8 to hit, and damage. Target 16(Skill)+2(Acc)+2(Extra time)+1(Braced)+1(Determined)-7(Head)-4(Bars)=11, beat target by 3. Rolled 8 impaling or focused burning to head? Magic says impaling, but errata say focused burning...unless dodged!]

Re: Broderick's Expedition

In reply to Clair Leibert (msg # 614):

Once again, to fire a missile that is the same size as the opening is -4 if head on. If you step to the side of the gate more than what would allow 50% cover, you cannot see the target and the penalty to get the missile through the gate increases drastically and if it gets through tbe gate it is considered a wild swing.  You are in a 4 foot wide corridor and the gate is slightly recessed, about a foot. All of the spellcasters piled into the opening and blocked the troll and his bow.

ooc thank you, sorry had a mental image that they were in a room, which was longer than the passage they are in.

The area was far to small for the number in the group to work effectively. To avoid adding to the congestion Clair moved away from those who were attacking the Slorn.

Re: Broderick's Expedition

As the black ice closed around the Slorn, trapping its movements, Darius smiled and took a step to the side. "All yours," he said.

[Private to GM: The slorn now has to roll quick contests of ST against the binding's ST of 24. If it wins, it breaks free; otherwise it loses one FP (only recoverable through warmth) and can try again in ten seconds.

Alternatively, it can attack the binding with its innate attack. DR of a normal binding is 1/3rd of the level; since that meshes with how ST is computed, I'd say it's 1/3rd of either Elementalism skill (i.e. 17/3 = 5) or 1/3rd of the increased binding ST (i.e. 24/3 = 8). Your decision.

In reply to Darius Kopaki (msg # 622):

The Slorn rattles against the binding, foul clouds of poison errupting from its nostrils.
The beast is in midstream, facing to your left, and unable to bring its breath to bear on you. It is massively strong, and the binding looks to be weakening.

The slorn is in the middle of the chanel, about 3 yards from the edge of the gate, and currently unable to attack.
Melchizidek had injured its side minimally with the sunbolt; so far it has been struck lightly by Claire and twice by Melchizidek, and was bound by Darius.

"Anybody got a key to this gate?"

In reply to Grimaldi (msg # 628):

Broderick gave his head a shake. I suggested a plan where we could engage the creature and prevent it from passing through the gate. This was disregarded in favour of shooting the Slorn with missiles. This was the groups decision so until its killed the way you as the Professionals decided to go with that. The Slorn behind the barrier and us safe this side and the Mages and Missile armed whittling away at it.
