In reply to Broderick Leibert (msg # 930):

Gaspard and Timeon hoist the cover atop the well and screw it back down.

"There must be some kind of standard to the placement of these things... it is beyond me. If they are trying to keep water from flowing down with those wells, we probably  need to find a place where there are steps up to get down."

Broderick assists with the process of  as it's a mild distraction from the otherwise dull process. Once the cover is secure they continue on heading away from the direction they came.[Private to GM: Broderick updates his map accordingly]

Re: Broderick's Expedition

In reply to Broderick Leibert (msg # 935):

The corridor has increasingly poor footing, with the cracked flagstones shifting under the feet of even the lighter people traipsing over it. Smasher's heavy tread is cracking some of the flooring as he goes, and there are creaking sounds and a hissing of sand after his steps. The walls and ceiling are still braced every ten feet or so with slender bands of shint black stone devoid of any joins, as is the floor, but the quality of stone between the reinforcing material leaves a great deal to be desired.

The sounds of flooring cracking was quite concerning. I suspect further progression along this path will be hazardous to us all. We shall head black and search elsewhere. declared Broderick leading the group back the way they came. On reaching the first intersection they head down a passage they hadn't been.

Re: Broderick's Expedition

In reply to Broderick Leibert (msg # 937):

Smasher might well have been too much for the flooring there.

You head back through the smoke to the gate that was etched clean. Ti eon makes quick, if squeaky work with the key, and after a little bit, you find that you can travel south, or north, parallel to the damaged area. There are a few bicked over archways to either side, but the stonework seems to be reasonably intact, although a great deal of it has a slightly tacky sheen to it. Your map of the upper level indicates that the southhand path would lead you to the near vicinity of Ashbury's establishment,  although below it, and edging into Shevnian territory, while the more northernly passage would eventually lead toward the area of the cathedral, the ropemaking guild, and that black spire known as Twilight House. Of course, you would be some thirty feet below the surface, and a good sixteen feet below the area where you encountered the hobgoblin bridge to their tenament tower, which is also more easterly than your current location.

Re: Broderick's Expedition

In reply to Narrator (msg # 938):

Proceeding north, you notice that this section has also had reinforcements added, but this looks like more mundane masonry, although there are stretches in the arches supporting the roof above where it looks like magical shaping of stone was employed, just not the slick black adamantine work you have seen elsewhere. There also appears to have been an attempt to replace the frieze of green tile at shoulder level, but the color isn't quite right. You pass a few doors, one of them chained shut, and come to an unusual feature.
The intersection has a circular mosaic on the ground, and pillars rise from each corner to create a decorative fan vault. This time, there is some of that black stone, in delacate vines interlaced around the pillars, and creeping along the delicate edges of the fans. Below, you realize that the mosaic is not grouted, but suffused with a lacelike layer of the black stone.

In reply to Broderick Leibert (msg # 940):

The style of the design is much more elaborate and delicate than other similar construction you have seen with the black stone. It is also very symmetrical. You have seen a little fan caultig in the Cathedral, but not this fine, presumably indestructible.

The room with the chained door is about five yards before the intersection.

Re: Broderick's Expedition

In reply to Broderick Leibert (msg # 942):

The door is in keeping with numerous ones you have passed, but definitely of a different style of construction than the filigreed intersection.

The chain looks to have been rusted, and still is on the door side, but the corridor facing portions are bright and shiny, if a little rough and tacky to the touch. As you inspect the chain, something pushes against the door and emits a low moan.

The otyugh starts to back away.

Broderick Durmised that everyone would include them. That's a pity, I was thinking we may have been able to assist it. Guess it'll have to stay where it is. We'll move along then. heading back to the intersection that was being renovated.  Heading along the first passage on their left, that they haven't explored.

Which room being renovated? you are a few yards away from the four-way intersection with the fan vaulting. A ways back (and almost parallel to the corridor you are in, although about twenty yards to the left of you) there was a sundered area with somewhat sparse repairs that looked like it would collapse.

Re: Broderick's Expedition

In reply to Broderick Leibert (msg # 954):

Hoping to have bypassed the bad floiring in that direction, you head down the left hand path. The flooring is uneven, the large stone slabs of the flooring appear tho have shifted, and every four feet or so the edge of a slab protrudes about a hand span.  The ceiling is patchy, with some of the old-empire concrete broken away, revealing the brickwork above.
Still, this cannot have been recent, as there is no debris from the ceiling, and the edges of the pavers show griives from a cart such as the one you are noisiy hauling.
Still, the flooring is fairly stable until you come to an area where both the floir and ceiling have a hole, slightly apart, at a diagnal. The floor here is patched witha bronze grate set into a frame of that black stone, although in amuch simpler layout than you saw at the intersection. The arched ceiling has a set of cross braced arches made of ordinary stone, with another bronze grate set into it. That one is about a foot in diameter, the one in the floor, something like a yard.
