Crossbow was cocked (and loaded, but bolt later removed) when he was coming down into the
 structure...he will use 2 hands when he has the crossbow in hand to load it, but the shield
 stays on his arm. It takes too long to remove it, and it does not need removing to fire a
crossbow, as I understand. It is just unreadied.

The bolt strikes the rat thing true, impaling it in the vitals, and it coughs up blood and falls over. This was a living creature, and never one you have ever heard of as being undead...
