Two levels deep: Broderick's expedition continues

Continuing from Broderick's expedition:

The corridor continues past the unusual configuration of floor and ceiling grates and there are a pair of double doors to the right hand side of the corridor fatened with a thick, rusty chain.

Broderic examines the chains, then turns to the  Fre Noe do you think this also restraints those who perrished and are risen. If so would you be able to rectify both this and the previous restless forms by correctly laying them to rest?

[Private to GM: Are the chains of a similar age and make as the one they found earlier? Does there appear to be any trap?

"Lay them to rest? Final rest takes most of my energy to bestow and almost a quarter of an hour to perform, and that is for one corpse at a time. I have not the ability to repel them, but there are means to dispose of them, if that is which you desire."
He pats his mace with the palm of his hand.

[Private to Narrator: there are 12 plague zombies within. They can be outrun easily, and below is a staircase into a large area with side rooms. The Hadereum wi.l want this site]

Before the chain securing the door is removed we should decide if we either allow these creatures full access or bar one door. If full access Frer Noe should be in the centre Smasher the Right, I'll take the left; the rest of you in the second and third ranks wherever you think best. If limited access Smasher to the front with Frer Noe and I in support, the rest of the group as they wish behind us.

From the doorway you can see:  8 bodies, a mutilated undead struggling with Frer Noe and Gaspard, which has just gouged the swordsman's arm,

Smasher lying on the edge of the landing, which looks like it is space he can fall off
(there are two areas like this, one to either side of the steps)

and two undead coming up the steps, which you cannot actually see, but the way these things are slowly rising and advancing at the same time would imply a set of stairs about two yards wide with a gap to either side of about a yard and a half.

One of those two was struck with a stone missile.  both seem to be having difficulty climbing up, and the injured one falls off to the side with a subsequent splash.

As smasher struggles to walk over a pile of corpses (roll DX-2)

Frer Noe strikes a glancing blow against the wounded dead.
Gaspard tries to stab it in the head, and because it lurches from being struck, he misses, and fails to parry as it claws deeply into his shoulder under his coat of plates, drawing a considerable amount of blood with its talons!

The other one that made it up the stairs trips and collapses onto the other bodies.

Within the room is a pile of corpses that Smasher has just stepped over.

Margeaux casts light into the space, and you can see a stairway that descends to a landing and then splits into two staircases.
There is one zombie (injured) on the stair, and below the staircases is s pool, with a fountain spewing water into the pool from the base of the landing.
Below you can see two six foot tall obelisks capped with unlit torcheres
The ceiling is supported by vaulting that ties into pilasters along the walls. There are steps up to a door in the right hand wall.

Below, three badly damaged zombies are half in and half out of the pool, they can be dispatched  easily. There are bodies on the landings and in the pool.

The fountain at the front of the lower landing is shaped like a roaring lion. The water in the pool is murky.

The obelisks are almost nine feet tall, and have iron baskets filled with dry wood.

The arched door to the side is between the pilasters that hold up the arched roof, and a couple steps up.
There does not seem to have been a purpose for the undead being here, unless they were merely tossed in to keep them from rotting in the hallway.

Re: Two levels deep: Broderick's expedition continues

In reply to Clair Leibert (msg # 126):

The swordsman crashes to the floor as smasher pulps the tentacle holding him.  A rather angry looking eye and a mouth lined with teeth form on the stump of the tentacle still wrapped around him. The other end of it disappears into the water.
Meanwhile the second tentacle wrapped on Gaspard's ankle has a hole in it... that looks the same all the way through, as if the thing was completely solid, and it retracts into the water, leaving the swordsman struggling with an apparent eel.

Directing Smasher to continue attacking the beast in the water Broderick thrusts at a tentacle that is accessible his rapier piercing its sinewy appendage.

In reply to Smasher (msg # 130):

The thing, struck hard enough from above with Claire's missile, for it to set off a bit of thrashing in the water, wraps a tentacle around smasher's maul and yanks on it.

Broderick stabbed at the tentacle that was attempting to wrestle Smashers Maul from him, just as the creatures tentacle was yanked out of the way by Smashers tug.

In reply to Smasher (msg # 132):

As a 17, that is a failure (a simple failure, not a crit, which would have knocked onto the ground as well), and the creature pulls away the maul. Smasher is nearly lifted off the ground as it does.

Re: Two levels deep: Broderick's expedition continues

Seeing the creature yank the Maul away from Smasher, Broderick directs Smasher to squish the Teethed portion that's attacking Gaspard. Broderick then stabs at the creature determined not to miss it this time. His rapier pierces the beast solidly

In reply to Smasher (msg # 138):

Smasher punches the partial tentacle wrapped around Gaspard, who is doing poorly.

The rest of the beast retreats below the water, and to the back of the pool after being wounded.

[Private to Smasher:

Just looking over Smasher- were his $1500 (each) weapons accounted for in his cost? That is 6 points alone, and counts for the value, even if manufactured and not bought. Again, orichalcum is usually produced in a time consuming way; first essential earth with a 10x cost in fp, then shape earth with a 10x cost, (and an appropriate  armory roll)followed by earth to stone (metal) with a 10x cost. The first two spells might only cost 10fp each, which is doable, but earth to metal costs 30fp in this respect. Energy reserve and power items are useable, but it would take that and about 3-4 doses of paut.
It this happened off screen, it needs be paid for in points.

His armor (plate) costs $20k, or 40 points, the weapons 6 points, and the golem quite a few as well.

Re: Two levels deep: Broderick's expedition continues

In reply to Void brute (msg # 143):

Epilog:

The void brute rips out Frer Noe's throat, the pool creature staches hold
osf Smasher and pulls it into the pool, where it rusts immobile without someone to command it.
The void brute is struck by Claire's missile, and it turns and pursues her.
Broderick runs up the stairs to save her, both are killed, along with Carruthers, who tried to interpose himself between the creature and Claire. Phyliycity the sprite is eaten whole by the void brute.

Gaspard bleeds to death when Frer Noe's lend vitality spell wears off.

Timeon flees out the side door...and somewhere onto tne third level, where he eventually becomes part of a horde of zombies.

Margeaux runs away when she sees the void brute manifest, closing and chaining the door behind her. It never sees her, and Claude, the ghost of her dead husband guides her back to Ashbury's.

The young otyugh runs away, eventually finding its way back to the catchment room, where it locks itself in to be safe.

The curse that animated the zombies reanimates Clair, Gaspard, Carruthers, and Broderick as horde zombies; Frer Noe's devotion leaves him unraiseable as the unnameable thing he served consumes his soul.

The pool creature regenerates its lost limbs and retreats to the deeper pool when the torchieres burn out and the fountain resets...
