Saishi greets his fellow priest and asks why a priest of Grom has so many followers here.

Kirpich explains that they have just defeated the tower full of Vampires and were going to the Baron to claim the promised tower as their reward. He had the followers in order to build a shrine to Grom there.

I assume Saishi would know Grom as a good god of Earth?

At the mention of the Baron, Saishi raises an eyebrow, and mentions that there is a new Baron.

"It's true. Pequenaud has been replaced by his brother-in-law, James. He is an honorable man.", Kichiro added.

"The walls you see, in the road and the paddies, were raised to defend against Pequenaud's soldiers, who were sent to extract tribute from this village.  The new Baron, Ser James, assisted us in ending such actions, and we assisted him in resuming his seat in Brouse.

"One of our purposes in returning here is to restore the road and paddies, since the defenses are no longer needed.  Ming-Sa, a woman of this village, and I were able to raise these works in three days, and I would expect to be able to bring them down in a similar time."

The man speaking is, when close up, clearly not quite human, with his bright yellow skin and glossy queue that doesn't seem to be hair.  He arrived riding a beast that isn't quite a horse, and keeping well away from the other horses in the group.

"I see. We can possibly help, and moving Groms earth is a part of what we do. If we do assist, could we rely on you to act as character references to the new Baron? I would also need to feed my followers of Grom."

"I would welcome help, as I'm sure Ming-Sa would -- she is a mage, but doesn't yet know the spells of Earth to turn the stone back into soil, or to smooth the road.  If there are more mages who can assist with their energy, the group of us might be able to clear this sooner.

"I, at least, find working Earth to be fatiguing."

"I can shape 2 cubic yards of earth all day, and Benny can shape earth too, while Tommy can lend energy. Most of the followers have learnt the words for shape earth to assist also. Balir and Gunther are dwarven men at arms, while Aethul and Hennati are also able combatants. Can we rely on your support to claim what we have earnt if we do assist?"

"Each wall is cased with stone, transformed from earth when the walls were erected.  We will also need to change Stone to Earth for each section, and such is the most tiring part of the process.  The stone is half a foot thick on both sides and the top, as well as down into the ground on one side.  The walls were as large as I could make before needing to rest.  Ming-Sa shared her energy to allow us to divide the resting time."

Kirpich is not shy about Grom. He also asks about the god of Saishi. It is likely to be a very long religious discussion as both priests talk at length about their beliefs to all who will listen.

While the priests talked religion and the mages worked to dismantle the ramparts, Kichiro took it upon himself to visit with the village elders to tell them of the new Baron.

"It's a pleasure to deliver good news for a change.", Kichiro replied.

After we finish up our tasks here we will be returning to Northport to report to Lord Sakemoko.  Do you have any messages or information for us to take back to him?"

Kirpich and his followers will make quick work of the earthworks, with any spare energy going to assist the village growing food. A resource they would likely need soon. Kirpich will want to discuss an ongoing arrangement for food for the tower and workers within, approaching the village elder about the subject.

Given helpful actions so far and the option of a nearby regular trade, and a place of defence nearby, Saishi is willing to negotiate, though whether he is more supportive of the Villagers or the priest is yet to be seen.

Chou-Zhen also speaks both Aralaise and Sahudese (and Shevnian, if needed), though all have a hard-to-place accent.

Balir starts talking just as Kirpich does. The dwarf lets the human finish, and then says his piece: "I don't know what salted dead are, but yeah, especially the last two we fought were pretty bad. That was partially our own fault though, because we forgot to use the tools we had brought.
But to answer the other half of the previous question, we intend to live there, as it was given to us by the previous baron. We hope that farmers, and maybe even tradesmen, will come to the area and perhaps we can have a flourishing economy."

"The difference between taxes and tribute is that taxes fund necessary services like city guards and maintenance of sewers, while tribute is merely theft from working folk by nobility."

"Taxes can be excessive too, depending on what is given in return. Tribute is usually demanded of conquered peoples as a sign of servitude. But how did he treat villagers? Did he demand tribute? If so, did he invade, or threaten to?"

Balir suddenly realizes how much more appealing taxes look when you are the one collecting them. "Yes, it is probably worth adding that the tower is in a rather sorry state, presently, having been left unmaintained for decades. And in general the whole area needs much investment, starting new fields, building roads, and such. But we will, of course, do our utmost to balance these endeavours with the needs of the people. A good way to obtain extra gold is always to go get it yourself - from villains, of course - so hopefully the guild will have much work for us. We will need to hire a steward to take care of the fiefdom while we are out."

Kichiro carefully listened to back and forth until a comment made him stop and speak.

"Are you planning on this village becoming part of your supposed fiefdom?  What do think Baron James would think of this plan?", he asked

"Oh no. At the moment we are not entirely sure where that fiefdom ends and begins."

"Meanwhile, the road is passable once more, the paddies can be planted in their season.  Have the yokai remained in control?"  Chou-Zhen looks around for the oil-drinker, who had agreed to join the village as a productive citizen.

After buying some rice for an offering to Akitsu-san and more for his rice porridge creature (about $20 worth in total), Ales heads in the direction of the dragfly protector.

Carefully suppressing a smile (which humans tend to find discomforting), Chou-Zhen begins to instruct Ming-Sa, first teaching Seek Water.

"Very good.  Now, to Purify water, you must pour it through a circular opening, whether the neck of a bottle or jug, a hoop, or even if nothing else a circle formed by your fingers or arms."  He begins to instruct Ming-Sa in this spell.

Ales readies his scimitar and then he quickly approaches to render assistance to the great dragonfly.

As if sensing the warrior mage's intent, the great dragonfly drives the stirge toward Ales that he might attack it.

Kichiro patiently observed the hunters as they made their way through the forest on their hunt.  When they successfully copied his form, he gave enthusiastic praise to encourage them.  If not, Kichiro corrected mistakes in a firm but still respectful manner, and demonstrated the task or action again.

there are a handful of stirges below the treeline,where Akitsu-san with his broad wingspan cannot fit.

Not sufficiently intelligent to see the eminent danger of the dragonfly, and motivated by hunger, you are able to draw out four of them into diving range, but two of them rush you -

the stirges seem confused by the smoke, and startvto slow down their assault as they lose sight of you.

Ales blasts one of the stirges, which crashes flaming to the ground and is consumed by a fireball!
The remaining stirges flee the area, but are hunted down swiftly by the great dragonfly.

the smog lifts, revealing some downed stirge bits, which the warbling ooze slithers over to envelop.

While his pet eats up the stirges' remains, Ales goes and creates an altar for Akitsu-san, complete with rice and clean water.

Presuming the instruction is completed and Ming-Sa has successfully learned to Purify Water...

"You have done well once again.  Let us rest and recover our energy."

After Ales sets out the rice and clean water, Ales also sets out $25 in various coins in alms to Akitsu-san. He then unrolls his prayer mat and enters a meditative state, waiting for the great Dragonfly to return so he may petition Akitsu-san for its blessing.

OOC: How did Kichiro and the hunters do on their trip?

the hunters, who are stealthy and know the area did pick up some pointers
from Kichiro and now take their time aiming.

you were able to get a brace of pheasants, four hares, and a young deer.

Kichiro followed the hunters back into the village.   He hung back several paces and let them enter first and show off the results of their hunt.

"Your skilled hunters have returned.  Come look at their success!", he shouted in Sahudese. The hunters were competent hunters and good students.  He wanted to give them a chance to shine a bit.

The hunters glow with pride and are well recieved by the villagers.
The elder sees what Kichiro has done and gives a subtle nod.

Kichiro returned the nod with a slight smile and he took a seat near the elder.

"We plan to return to town tomorrow and report back to Lord Sakemoko.   If you have a message for him, you can tell us or write a write a letter and we will deliver it to him when we arrive.", he said simply.

"Ah, many thanks we send to you. I have a missive prepared for him."

Chou-Zhen seeks out Ming-Sa.

"It seems we must return to Northport and resume our regular duties to the Omo.  I hope that what I have been able to teach you will serve you and the village well."

"There is no need to thank me, Elder.  This village is a second home to me.   I'm happy to help when I can.", Kichiro replied.

Saishi, fully recovered by the morning, prepares to head off.

Chou-Zhen saddles Guai Ma, keeping her well away from the horses, and passes among the villagers to say his goodbyes to Ming-Sa and the oil drinking yokai, as well as the elders and those who stood to defend the road during the first attack by Pequenaud's men.

To Ming-Sa, he quietly adds, "If you should come to visit Northport, I would welcome you."

Kichiro visited the elder early in the morning and got the letter to deliver to Lord Sakemoko.  He bid him farewell and promised to come back again.  With fresh water in his skin and a couple small meals stowed in his pack, he joined his friends on the road for the trip back to Northport.

the long necked yokai woman bows to Chou-Zhen Mou, and Ming Sa does as well, with a smile.

The road ahead awaits you, and you begin to make your way along the iter to the north.

They are mostly selling faire foods- fried dough, kebabs, hand pies and honeyed puffed grain, along with barley and cider spirits to drink.

"Everything here is most likely overpriced.  And for anomalies of nature, we have our own."  Chou-Zhen's voice is at a level intended for the immediate group.

"Agreed.", Kichiro said.   They still had to see someone.

"It is good to return to my home city once more.  It seems we have been away for years, though it has only been a month."

"Perhaps so.  The Omo has been generous with us in the past, when there was no emergency.  As I told the man at the faire, Guai Ma was a gift from him -- or perhaps from my father, via our Lord.  He has provided healing, when possible, gifted me this armor, and most importantly offered his trust that I would serve him well."

You are greeted at the compound by the familiar scarred ashigaru and by Chung Wang and Xu, who greet you and Miko and guide neko servants to help with the ox carts.

In reply to Di San Ge Er Zi (msg # 160):

Saishi follows in silence.

Chou-Zhen will follow Ales, to give his own report in turn, emphasizing the progress at the village (yokai being captured, slain, driven away, or recruited to become productive villagers, "Lazy eta" becoming recognized hunters and defenders, Ming Sa gaining magic, etc.) more than the deposition of Baron Pequenaud.

Kichiro greeted the guards and the helpers as they entered the gate.

"It's good to see you again.  I trust you've been well?", he asked as they passed the gate and went with the others to meet with Lord Sakemoko.

There would be little to add after Ales and Chou-Zen told the tale, so Kichiro just confirmed that the story told was true and filled in a detail or two if asked directly.  As far as he was concerned, he merely competed a task that was assigned to the best of his abilities.  He had no need for acolades as long as his Lord was pleased with his work.

Saishi watches with a smile.

Kichiro stood a respectful distance away from his Omo so that he didn't interfere with his activity.   He waited quietly until he was acknowledged.

Chou-Zhen also waits quietly.

The Omo carefully apples a few drops of water to his floral arrangement, then leans back and puts down the dipper.

Slowly he turns and sits, surveying the lot of you in your clean robes.

"I have heard of many brave doings to the south.  You are a credit to our community"

In reply to Sakemoko (msg # 168):

Saishi acknowledges with the slightest bow of the head, but waits for him to continue.

Kichiro smiled.  He had merely been doing his duty but nevertheless, it felt good to receive a compliment from the Omo.

Chou-Zhen, well aware of the effect of his smile on humans, suppresses such a reaction and instead bows his respect to the Omo.

The Omo bows in return.
"We shall have much to discuss with the envoys of the new baron you helped install.
I am pleased with the defenses you have raised for the village.
 I have received word from Master Phuong, and he should be returning from our homeland in a matter of weeks, having recovered genealogies so that the villagers might invoke the protection of their ancestors against the yokai who followed them here."

In reply to Sakemoko (msg # 172):

"Excuse me for speaking, but not all yokai are evil, as you are aware. How will such invitations effect them?"

Kichiro said nothing but listened closely. He was not involved in the previous plan to pacify the yokai and didn't know much about them, except for the giant dragonfly.

Ales spoke up as well. "Yes, Akitsu-san, the giant dragonfly seems to protect them, and has been helpful on several occasions."

Chou-Zhen deeply bows his thanks to the Omo as the cat folk bring out the parcels.

Kichiro bowed when he was presented with his gift.

"You humble me, Omo-sama.  I merely do my duty as you request.", he said.

Kichiro and Saishi Jin are first granted silk garments marked with the Omo's seal, essentially the same livery as the others.  These items are fairly expensive, but there is more to come.

Kichiro is given a bundle of three arrows of superior manufacture and unusual appearance 

Sashi Jin is given a necklace with 5 salt crystal beads

Chou-Zhen Mou is given and a silver dragonfly pin (may be added to power item to increase value by $400) a bottle of the eclipse, and a peculiar pouch

Ales Konstantin is given a peculiar book, a tassel and a silver Dragonfly pin (may be added to power item to increase value by $400)

Ales wonders if the Omo has forgot about him, but puts those thoughts to the side. It would be rude to think such things....

Ales realizes the errors of his ways and bows deeply before the Omo in contrition and gratitude.

Kichiro again bows deeply in gratitude and waits to be dismissed so that he can go change into his new clothes.

Chou-Zhen makes his way to his assigned quarters, there to examine the Omo's gifts in detail.

Kichiro also retired to his quarters and changed into to his new clothes.  Wearing the Omo's sigil made him feel more accepted within the clan.

The neku girl raps softly on the frame of the shoji door to Kichiro's quarters.

"Coming."  Kichiro said, loud enough to be heard at the door.

Having changed and stowed all of his belonging, he had found time to relax for a bit.  He was about to light his pipe and enjoy a bit of fine tobacco.  He hadn't expected a visitor for a while. Kichiro set down his pipe and went to the door to see who it was.

"Miko-san. Would you like to come in?  I have tea and snacks.", , he Kichiro asked, recognizing his visitor.

While ostensibly a servant of the household, you are fairly certain that Miko has some kind of ranking in the Omo's organization and has labored as a handler for the non Sahudese within the group.

"Please make yourself comfortable, Miko-san.   Lord Sakemoko mentioned a trip back to Brouse but I didn't think it would be happening so soon.  Will you be coming with us?", Kichiro said as he started to get the refreshments ready.

The Omo has great faith in Chou-Zen Mou and Ales Konstantin, but they associate with elder things,

and appreciated by the Omo; they are to be his primary envoys to the village."
She pauses here and  bows her head.

Baron James, I observed directly to determine which of the group he admired most.
Sashai Jin he criticized for overuse of wasps, and he showed revulsion to Chou-Zen Mou.
I do not think he grasped the subtlety of Ales-san's aid in dispatching the champion of the former Baron,
which is a pity, as it was very clever working, and the Master is proud of him.
So the mantle of the envoy of the Omo to Brouse falls upon you, who were highly complimented by Baron James.

Kichiro instantly stopped what he was doing and turned to the Neko girl.

"Surely, this is a mistake, Miko-san.  I'm a scout, an archer.  Not a diplomat.  Regardless of what Baron James might say about me,  I have no place at the table to bargain in the Omo's stead.", he replied.

"I am grateful for Yeogja Matin's assistance, but I still wonder if I have the ability to carry out this mission to the Omo's satisfaction.", Kichiro answered.

He gently placed two cups of tea and a small plate of snacks on the table between them and took a seat opposite of the Miko. He took a deep breath and released it with a look of resolve, or resignation.

"I will take on this mission as it is my duty to Lord Sakemoko.  As always, I will carry out this mission to the best of my ability, but please convey my reservations to the Omo.   I believe I require much preparation to carry out this task before we leave for Brouse."

Miko bows and exits, and a few moments later there is another knock on the door.

"Kiricho-san, may I enter?"

Though I am partly of that blood, on my father's side, those people have never fully accepted me.
The baron's folk will be just as unaccepting of all of us. I think they would have accepted Ales-san before any of us
but I believe h has work to do in confronting the old baron's wizard.  There seems to be something personal there."

"Oh, yes. It was personal for Ales.  He and the wizard have a history apparently.", Kichiro acknowledged.

He found a seat across the table from Yeogja.  He settled in and finally lit his pipe.

"First of all.  I am a warrior, not a diplomat.  We seem to have a difficult task ahead of us, Yeogja-san.  Like you said, we are not like them.  They are not like us either. That doesn't mean that we cannot be successful.  We just have to find something that we can use as leverage.  A common goal.", he said and took a puff on his pipe.  A trail of smoke and the smell of sweet tobacco trailed around the room.

I was told that Baron James spoke well of me in his message to the Omo.  I suspect that as a warrior, he has respect for my ability on the battlefield and I did caution him to guard his treasury and armory during the transition of power. Perhaps we can use that as currency during the negotiations.  James is an honorable man so I don't think he will try to cheat us but may be tough in his negotiation.  His underlings on the other hand may not be as trustworthy.

The book that Ales has is forbidden, and allows him to add 2 points to Hidden Lore: Elder Things, with a +@ on rolls pertinent to his little pet.

Saishi just meditates some, and reads about exotic animals at the local library then?

Chou-Zhen rises and bows when Miko enters, giving her the respect most would reserve for humans and those of the upper class, rather than servants.

"Chou-Zhen san. I merely mean to reassure you of the Omo's trust in you and Alses-san.  Kichiro has favor with the new baron, and as a result, he will be the face of the Omo's interests in the south."

"That seems very sensible to me.  I am...what I am, and my talents do not run to diplomacy in any case.  Ales is not Sahudese, loyal and powerful as he is.  Kichiro is the better choice as a face for the Omo's liaison with Brouse.
