You are led through the tunnels of the trolls, until you begin to feel a
draft, and hear the sounds of rushing water. Angrid points through an archway
and beyond, you can see a great chasm, so wide you can barely make out the
opposite side. There are several small waterfalls, running from many feet
above you and pouring into the abyss.
  In the center or the pit, there is a bizarre structure made of smooth black
stone. Shaped almost like an egg balanced on a pillar, it has spires and
statues, and more importantly, slender bridges that reach to the sides of the
pit, acting as buttresses. This is the island.

Approaching the edge, you can just make out a gossamer strand of spuder silk
trailing from a bolt sunk into a wall on your side off the pit and trailing
accross to the structure just a few feet from one of  the bridges.

"Spider silk. Of course, we go around them, right?"

She calls upon her Nature Spirit Ally to assist her, then casts a spell, and becomes a bat!

"Hey, we can't all just flitter off.  Some of us have to do this the hard way."

I check the spidersilk line to see if it's still taut.  Gently at first, then a bit harder.

The spans are thirty yards by about two yards. The lone line of spidersilk
is actually attached to a crossbow bolt.

Gigi feels refreshed; how close are Gigi and Aoife flying?

I am flying about 3 feet off the wire. I am guessing Gigi, if she does fly with me, is flying along the spidersilk line. My nature spirit is flying above me and slightly behind, I assume.

Ooc:things got behind trying to differentiate a single climing rope from a mass of webs

A few yards out, you can see that the pit continues downward hundreds of feet
although much is obscured by mist rising from the waterfalls.

Once you ate a third of the way accross the chasm, you espy movement atop the
structure; a number of apparent statues of gargoyles are stirring!
