Re: Role call

In reply to Oren (msg # 970):

Yeah, Christine is not squishy if she can stay far enough from the fight!

As for overpacking...she is a woman! By the time you apply the 6lb limit for the various body of... Spells, and the weight of her makeup, she would be wearing a bikini...very much not her style!

As for cost, I think you are forgetting the spell prerequisites, especially for Golem, and the skill of sculpting. Animation also not so useful, and enchant has a bucket of prerequisites as well.

Oren:
Overpacking is the most common mistake of the novice adventurer.

With a ST of 9 even the basics feels like overpacking.

So you hire a Torchbearer carry some of it.  And then you hire a Guard to protect the Torchbearer.  Then a Laborer to carry the supplies for the other two guys you hired. Then...

So just take spells that replace whatever stuff you're bringing instead.

Mind you I say this as the proud owner of a squashed mule.

Jareth, just for clarity, Ardenas was never in the "Juniors" group, he picked up the lead that turned into "Day at the Dojo" after returning from an aborted mapping expedition with Huey and Mythos.

In reply to Oren (msg # 973):

Yes, I know about taking spells to replace goods carried, as you have noticed. But still, even armour can bring up the encumbrance for a strong fighter. That is why I have chunky as an elemental ally.

We may need Ooc 3 soon...

Yeah, that 6 pound limit means you need someone there to either A) pick up your stuff, or B) just be carrying it already.

I agree with going for B.

</quote>As for cost, I think you are forgetting the spell prerequisites, especially for Golem...</quote>
Nope, just ignored them.  Every single spell (except Golem and Enchant) has a use.

Okay... Summon Spirit is of very limited use...  I'll grant you that one, but it's no worse than say Seek Air.

quote:
... and the skill of sculpting.

I missed that.  The basic Artist/Smithing skill involved (Blacksmith if you say made an Iron Golem) is a necessity, but has it's own uses as well.

If nothing else as a "make some coin in town" skill.

quote:
Animation also not so useful...

Making the expensive statue you found walk itself to the art dealer?  CHA-CHING!

Making doors fight to stay closed or smack people that try to go through?

Okay, sure, Animation is right up there with Seek Air (mostly because it's so bloody expensive).  It damn sure wasn't on Ulo's list.

So... sure, 2 useless spells and 2 'not-very-useful' spells.

quote:
and enchant has a bucket of prerequisites as well.

1 spell from 10 different colleges.  I bet you hit that just filling in the spells you actually wanted and planned to use.

Air, Earth, Fire, Food, Knowledge, Light and Darkness, Meta-Spells, Movement, Protection, and Water just to name the most common choices...

Granted you bee-lined for the Elemental spells... so that would cause for some serious hard choices early on.

As a non-mage Jareth can't just do that.  Jednesa just carries whatever she needs, and the party needs, and the mules (giving them a break) and pulls the wagon... and barely breaks No Encumberance (I kid.  She's not that strong.  Yet).

Ardenas Barehand:
Jareth, just for clarity, Ardenas was never in the "Juniors" group, he picked up the lead that turned into "Day at the Dojo" after returning from an aborted mapping expedition with Huey and Mythos.

That's why I put him as 'Left "Wastrel's Hope" for "A day at the dojo"'.  I didn't go back to reread how connected you were to Nodwin, Grimbo, and Mario... but Ardenas was there (as you said, it's where he picked up the plot thread).

Azrael:
Summon Spirit is awesome, I don't know what you're talking about.

I KNOW!  Jareth wishes he had someone with him right now who could cast it (and do so with skill).  The dead are so much easier to question than the living.

Jocelyn Lemru:
Jocelyn IS NOT an Apprentice! She is a Mage ... well almost for sure ... maybe a journeyman mage ...  And you totally missed Mellaril... even though you are currently staring at her backside in the game...

Whoops!  And Mell was on my list too.  I'll add her in in a moment.

Christine Bjorn:
Lol, you forgot Death Vision...

Death Vision is awesome! Had Christine used it against that monstrously huge troll that that you guys had to spend so long hacking up it could have been a fight ender.

No resistance, just an IQ roll to shake off the Mental Stun?  Drops big guys like that's it's job.*

* Unless it has Combat Reflexes.  Cheaty big guys with their Combat Reflexes... /shakes fist

quote:
and Inspired creation.

That's not on the list of prereqs for Enchant or Golem.  I think you're using a different prereq chain GURPS Magic 4e (or a different set of required spells for making Golems*).

Inspired Creation is only a prereq for Awaken Craft Spirit which isn't a prereq for anything else.  Likely you needed Inspired Creation to sculpt the body... and Inspired Creation is not useless!**  It's a critical success on a crafting/artist roll with a +5 to your skill!  Sure... if you've other ways to make bank...

* Which makes sense... RAW Golems can only be healed by the Mage who created them... which means in DF... hmmm.  Definitely has to be a different style of Golem than RAW Magic 4e.  Unless Chris is unhealable?

** To anyone other than your stereotypical dungeon diving Firecasting DF Wizard...  heck Jareth would love to have that spell.  Get back from a delve and make a masterpiece Map that sells for $500?  Sign him up!

quote:
I have <b>scroll<b> and Lighten to make some case when bored in town...

Okay... now I really need to ask what spells the Narrator's allowing that aren't normally allowed!  ;)

quote:
He is a clay Golem, so skulpting is for clay...less useful. As for that statue, Chris can carru it!

If you've got other skills to make bank with?  Yeah, it's less useful.  But it's still not Seek Air.*

*I've yet to have a Wizard in any GURPS Fantasy game ever that found a use for Seek Air.  But every one of them had it...

Yeah, inspired creation was used to make him lifelike.

Death Vision? Maybe I should check that out. Summon Spirit not so useful when she is often the cause of death...Attitude apparently transcends death.

She does also have a spell specifically for healing Golems. She actually has a wide variety of spells...but lots of Fire ones! Almost all...

Death Vision? Maybe I should check that out.

There are a lot of spells that don't look very useful at first blush, but have subtle uses.

Agian though, Combat Reflexes makes it almost useless to use on most fighters (and it's an IQ check so useless versus most casters).  But on a big Brute?  Often they lack that advantage.

quote:

Ya just need to be a skillful caster... and have useful questions to ask.

quote:

I expected as such.  Golems would be useless in DF otherwise (for most PCs anyway, NPC Enchanter Clerics though?).

I made allowances  for enchanters, but as we are pbp and a grand total of three weeks has gone by in the last three YEARS of play, either you start with gear or you are an npc. Xandalar, who makes a living casting Manastone (the power item charging spell) became too boring for them to play.

I was referring to looking for Chris in the extremely long cast list to get to his description.

Anyway, what Chris is well established now!

And speaking of searching, Narrator, would you please open the next one before this thread becomes unsearchable?  Jareth's lists will be very handy to be able to find again!
