Assault on Eel's End

Maps should be uploaded. Group 0 map is the pier. C2 is Devargo's ship. Group 1 map will be the play map.

The boat turns out to be older than any of you and small enough to make sure you are all uncomfortably sitting in each other's laps. Fortune favors you with a thick cover of clouds. The moon winks from behind it now and again, but Malder proves to be adept at guiding your craft from shadow to shadow until you are under the pier.

Above, you can see the soles of countless boots and dirty, bare feet. The bang of a bass drum thrums above the noise of the crowd. The wooden boards above you creak and groan. A few sag and one actually bounces over your head, but they all hold. Whatever else will happen tonight, the pier at least will not come crashing down on your heads.

Ahead the hull of the Eel's End slides into view. Just as you saw from the brothel's porthole, large chunks of the hull are missing. Verik surveys the water and hefts his spear. Without a word he slides over the side and into the water. He surfaces just outside a large hole and then slips insode the ship. He signals for you all to follow.

The water is icy cold and black. Your body goes numb, but your fingers feel the side of the ship. Soon you force yourselves through a hole and into a small hold beyond inside the ship.

The floor here is almost non existant. As you attempt to pull yourself on to it, the wood gives way. You give up and tread water. A small light suddenly fills the room. Verik holds a small stone which appears to be glamoured with a light spell. He covers part of it with his sleeve, but enough light leaks out to show a wall seperating this part of the hold from the rest. Two doors are built into the wall, both decayed from years of neglect and water damage.

Malder breaks surface next to Vaddis. He blows water out of his nose and frowns at Verik. He then nods to the doors. "Shall we?"

Re: Assault on Eel's End

Tarrov was glad he had changed into something a little less ostentatious and a little more suited to swimming through dark waters to assault the boat of an infamous, spider-commanding criminal.  The bard was now wearing a loose-fitting pair of black trousers, a black undershirt, and a black cloak folded up and tied in a square that he did his best to keep out of the water as he stole into the ship alongside Malder, Vaddis, and the rest.

He emerged from the water and threw his cloak up onto what remained of the rotted wooden floor, gently testing it to ensure it would hold his weight.  His drenched trousers were no longer so loose-fitting, and his undershirt wasn't much better.

It was COLD.

Well, there was nothing for it now.  As he unhooked the whip from his belt, Tarrov nodded at Malder and Vaddis, indicating that one of them should have a go at opening one of the doors.  If combat was necessary, the bard much preferred experiencing it from behind the well-trained torsos of one of his more martial companions.

Vaddis pulls himself up out of the water enough to reach the door handle, and tests it to see if it is locked.

OOC - Is there a space where we can get up on the 'deck' or 'ribs' or keel of the ship to get out of the water?

Selvin summons his ally while they are waiting so he can be ready. He wasn't happy being cooped up and cramped in the boat with everyone but he kept silent and kept his grumbling in his head. He tries to huddle down further when the boards above their heads are sagging and bouncing. That would be just his luck to get knocked out by a stray board before the actual mission begins.

He sighs and slips into the water, shivering a bit and trying to hurry. He does, however, keep an eye on Toke and the person helping him to make sure the alchemist makes it okay. Not that Selvin is really a strong swimmer himself normally. He's only been in the water maybe twice in his whole life!

Selvin gives a nod and tries to get some of the water off of him but restrains himself from shaking himself dry like a big cat. "Which door? An' we should check fer traps, yah?"

Re: Assault on Eel's End

Toke broke surface with Malder, having used him as a guide and ballast. He spat out water and wiped away the water from his eyes, his whimpering barely audible amongst the splashing and spitting of the group. This was even worse than he thought; cold and wet and scary. He regretted his silence immediately upon entering the water and even more now.  He had to keep calm, keep from panicking, focus on the prize. He heard someone speaking.

That's it, focus on the words not on where you are. He replied in a hoarse whipser. "Sorry, in my job it pays to look the other way, though if you find something, I might be able to help with that." He paused a moment, thinking about how he could help. His eyes brightened as he remembered, he held up a vial of dull violet liquid. "Oh yeah, I have this if you need it, it'll allow you to see better in dim light."

The vial is the Keen Senses, extract.

Re: Assault on Eel's End

As Vaddis tries to pull himself onto the flooring, the wood groans and snaps. It seems a little more solid the closer to the wall and doors. The burly warrior manages to pull himself onto a ledge in front of one of the doors. Malder manages the same in front of the other. "This 'un looks clear..." the mercenary hisses. The door before Vaddis appears clear as well.

Malder nods to Vaddis, holds up three fingers, counts down, and opens his door. He scans inside and then nods. "Both doors lead inta a hold," he whispers.

The large area beyond is ankle deep in water. What it lacks in mold, it makes up for in odor. But it seems to be clear and the floor here is mercifully stronger. You all haul yourselves up into the hold. Outside of the brackish water, the only feature is a hole cut in the ceiling. A slimy rope hangs from the hole and down into the water at your feet, offering the only way up to the level above. Torchlight spills through the hole. From somewhere above you hear voices raised in raucous laughter. But they sound far away. A few small spiders skitter along the ceiling. Other than that, there is no sign of life.

Updating group 1 map. C16 is your current location. C10 is the mouth of the hole in the floor of the level above you.

Tarrov sloshed carefully through the water to look up at the hole in his ceiling, glad he wasn't wearing his good boots but still uncomfortably aware of his soaked socks.  He was grateful for the firmer footing, though.  "What an incredible smell you've discovered," he whispered, grinning at Vaddis and Malder.

The bard pointed at the rope.  "Looks like there's only one way up?"  He looked at the slime-covered hemp with distaste.  Maybe some of it would rub off when the others climbed up.  "Who wants to go first?"

Game Map 1 updated.

The rope is slimy and frayed in spots. But Selvin's claws help him scurry up the rope and over the lip if the hole.

The hole stands at the end of a hallway. At the other end of the hall is a set of double doors. Other doors, two on each side, line the hallway. A small corridor branches off to the west. The sound of voices seems to be coming from down this side hall.

A few small spiders scurry along the walls up here. But you see no guards or any other sign of life.

"Okay," Tarrov said, looking around at their many door-using options.  "We're trying to find the creature that controls these spiders for Devargo.  Our intelligence suggests that its under Devargo's audience chamber.  And Madame Helvara indicated that the audience chamber was in the back of the boat."  The bard jerked a thumb over his shoulder in a generally aft direction.

"Those double doors across the room," he pointed, "go fore, not aft.  Looks to me like we need to take one of these two nearest doors," he put out his hand, thumb and pinky finger extended, and wiggled it slightly, "and try to find which one takes us to the creature."

He looked at his drenched associates.  "Either one is fine with me."

Re: Assault on Eel's End

The reason for the spider motif on the door becomes readily apparent. Light shones down through the cracks in the floor above, illuminating a jungle of spider webs. Almost every inch of the room beyond is laced over and again with thick layers of cobweb. What used to be a hold is now an a veritable maze of sticky silk strands. The levels of silk do not hide the bones though. Human. Cat. Gnome. What may be a shark. Bones are displayed in various poses along the walls, with some dangling from parts of the ceiling.

You spy numerous spiders of regular size scurrying around. In a far corner ( southeast corner)) something larger moves. From the shadows that way a high, scritchy voice says, "Zhe comz 'n?"

Selvin charges forward as Vaddis charges backwards. In the midst of this ballet, Tarrov you see a small glass phial of foaming liquid sail through the air. It lands and bounces, suddenly erupting in a small spray of sulfurous smelling black liquid that seems to burn the deck and spiders in it's reach.

Toke, your shot went a little wild, as a sudden sound of boots outside startle you.

Vaddis, you sweep the deck with your blade, doing more with the flwt than the edge in this case. You manage to make a handful of spiders into long greasy smears. But more are pouring out.

Selvin, you charge into the room, moving to swipe at the...whatever it is. But your animal like ears hear a oise above you. A large spider, easily as big as you, is clinnging to the roof in this room, hidden by the webbing and it's molty greyish color. It is dropping towards you... Selvin, you did spectacularly well on this perception. I'll allow you to apply your attacks to either the big spider dropping on you or the wharever(Ettercap). Let me know.

Malder was starting to charge into the room behind Selvin, but pulls up short. "Damn. There's men outside. 's an ambush!" He bolts for the door. "I'll hold 'em back! Keep after these. Where tha hell is Verik?"

Why do things always seem to go from bad to worse?  Tarrov asked himself glumly, surveying the rapidly-deteriorating combat situation.  And were was Verik?  Had he gone to confront Devargo himself?  Or was he involved in what looked like a pre-planned ambush?  So many questions.

So few answers.

Well, there was nothing for it now.  They had to fight their way out, through this ettercap and his minions.  But taking down the ettercap seemed to be the first order of business.

"Sleep," Tarrov sang, waving his arm through the air, calling on the power of music to relieve the creature of consciousness.

Selvin, and here I thought you went with the mecha-style Summoner vs. the Pokemon model you rip into the spider's belly as he rips into your chest. The fangs, which you have a glorious clse up view of, puncture your friend 6 pts and deposit a sticky green pus like venom onto your chest. It's not the greatest feeling in the world, but it doesn't seem to be making you lightheaded. So you think you aren't poisoned.

As Vaddis swats at the northern swarm, Toke hears Tarrov sing a lullabye. Thesong seems to drift through the air and through the door into the next room where it settles around the Whatever-It-Is An Ettercap. Whatever-It-Is  seems to nod and droops it's shoulders. It rubs it's head but remains standing.

Malder hts the door to the hallway. In a moment outside you hear him curse and there's the sound of his sword smashing a wall. You hear a few other voices as well. Three, maybe four men. But since they are outside in the hallway, you aren't sure.

Unlike his previous throw, this throw seemed perfect; from the weight of the bomb, to shape of the catalyst, everything seemed the right size and shape for this exact trajectory. Though he wasn't exactly a fan of explosives, he was certainly going to miss that little bomb.

Re: Assault on Eel's End

The Little Bomb That Could turns the spiders at your feet to a thick bubbling goo Toke. At the same time, Vaddis makes a couple of long, sweeping blows that sends the swarm to the north scattering. Selvin's claw slices deep into the large spider's underbelly. The spider makes a sort of gurgling noise as the contents of it's thorax spills out over Selvin,  as if to make sure that the elf and his ally are doused in every possible filth imaginable as retribution for it's demise.

The Whatever-It-Is has started to climb the walls in the hold. It moves up the webbing as if it were so much netting.

Outside in the hall, Malder is cursing. But it sounds odd. Like he is coughing on something.

Vaddis is by the northern door in the room. He can look out into the hallway from where he is, but I would want a perception check to see how much he can see. I'll let Vaddis roll that.

Toke and Tarov are middle of the room.

Selvin is just inside the door to the hold. The spider is on top of him but Selvin will be able to push it off. I've already made the strength check.

The only concerns at the moment are the ettercap who is climbing up the wall, and whatever is going on out in the hallway.

He's been implaed quite nicely. You can't see the face of the man holding the other end of the spear. But you can make out his arm. The cloth of the sleeve is soppng wet.

Vaddis, you can see better as you approach the door. Out in the hallway there are four men besides Malder. The burly mercenary has indeed been stabbed through by the spear. But he is still managing to swing away. He is fending off one of the thugs at the moment.

Holding the other end of the spear is Verrick. The ex-Watch captain smiles at you and then speaks to one of the thugs, nodding in your direction. "That's Vaddis. He's one of their fighters. Take him down quickly."

Tarrov wasn't too happy with how things were going.  How could Verik betray them to Kindness like this?  And his own loyal lieutenant Malder in to the mix?  Something was going on here to which Tarrov wasn't privy, that was for certain.  And from the looks of things, Malder wasn't either.  The bard glanced around the corner at the full hallway.  This is becoming quite the party, he thought to himself.

Well, Selvin and Toke were going to have to deal with the Ettercap; they were much better equipped to do so than Tarrov.  But a bunch of warriors in a hallway?  Tarrov had just the answer for that.

He stepped into the doorway.  "Sleep," he sang, hoping that the spell would knock out the enemy fighters and not Vaddis or Malder.

OOC:  Tarrov moves into the doorway and casts Sleep on the opponents in the hallway.  (DC 15).

Re: Assault on Eel's End

Tarrov adjusted for you Vaddis

You slam open the doorway and swing, Vaddis, as Tarrov comes up behind you. The hallway outside is practically full to bursting. Six armed men stand there, each trying to look more thuggish than the others. Verik stands there, trying to force his spear deeper into Malder's guts. Malder has hold of the haft of the spear with one hand, trying to stop him, while flailing away with his sword to kwep two of the thugs at bay. One of the thugs dodges around Malder and your initial swing Vaddis and moves towards you, sword raised.

Behind Verik, three of the thugs suddenly go limp and slump to the ground. Verik snarls. "Someone kill the silver hair."

The Whatever -It-Is makes an annoyed grunt as Selvin's  crossbow bolt slams into it's thigh. The grunt becomes a screech a second later as one of Toke's miraculous phials spreads a searing caustic goo over it's back.

It's feet come off the ceiling but it manages to hang on with one hand. It dangles there, like a flopping tree root growing through the roof of a rodent's burrowed tunnel. It opens it's ugly maw and spews out a stream of thick silk towards Selvin.

Verik is SUCH a bastard, Tarrov couldn't help thinking to himself.  The young bard felt for Malder, who must feel run through by more than a spear.  Getting betrayed by someone you trusted?  Always a harsh experience.

Tarrov grinned as three of the four thugs-in-waiting slumped to the ground in response to his spell.  A good start, in Tarrov's opinion, and a much-better reaction than the one from the ettercap.  But it was not nearly enough.  They were still hard pressed from all sides.

Time for action.  Tarrov unspooled his scorpion whip and sent it flashing out towards the thug engaging Vaddis, sending the man crashing towards the ground.  The bard grinned.  If Vaddis couldn't dispatch a man lying sprawled in front of him, well, he probably needed to have a hard discussion with his favored deity.

Tarrov's whip brings the thug down. Vaddis' blade catches him on the way there. He is jerked sideways and hits the floor. The thug bounces and doesn't rise.

Verik drops the spear and backs up, pulling his bow from off his shoulder. Malder collapses to one knee. One of the two remaining thugs rushes towards you while the other raises his sword to give Malder a haircut. A very severe haircut.

The Whatever-It-Is moves along the ceiling, though oddly not towards you Selvin.  He stops and presses his hand into the wood on the ceiling and as you study it, it looks like there is a trap door in the ceiling above. The Whatever-It-Is seem sto be trying to open it. Toke sticks his head in, eyeing the Whatever-It-Is. The skinny alchemist is pouring a few drops of liquid into another small phial and shaking it. "You want me to bomb him or cut you out?" he asks you.

Re: Assault on Eel's End

The bomb drifts up lazily from your hand Toke. It slaps against the ceiling just to the things right. As the vial explodes some of the caustic elements splash against it's side. The Whatever-It-Is makes a sort of screechy sound and convulses as it slaps at the burning areas. It shudders and then droops, hanging by one hand from the ceiling, swaying back and forth like some Inn sign caught in a strong wind.

Selvin and Toke, you think it's dead. Probably.

The thug steps sideways to avoid Vaddis' wild swing and begins to bring his sword down on Malder's head. Tarrov's whip slashes at his wrist. Not securing it, but it's enough to make his swing go wide as well. The blade crashes down on the haft of the spear and slices it neatly in half. Malder collapses to the floor.

The other thug advances, thrusting his sword towards Vaddis  . The paladin steps aside neatly. Verik notches an arrow to his bowstring.

Toke and Selvin, you think the ettercap is dead. But it's hard to tell from this angle and he is still attached to the ceiling with one hand. Tarrov and Vaddis, there are two thugs, one of whom is advancing on Vaddis. Verik is set to fire next round. Please post actions.

Selvin, as you wrench your arm free of the goo, you hear something. Someone is screaming on the floor above. There are other voices being raised as well. The Whatever-It-Is sags a little. You flinch, thinking it's stirring, but it appears the ceiling above it's still wall-crawling hand is moving. Suddenly a section of the ceiling comes away. You realize with a start there was a trap door in the ceiling. Whatever-It-Is...Was...must have been trying to open it and now it's body weight has finished the job. Whatever-It-Is slumps to the floor. Above the trapdoor opens into a large room. You can see a man dressed in black leather screaming as spiders swarm over his body. Other men, thugs by the look of them, are yelling, apparwntly confused by the whatever's going on up there.

One of the thugs looks down at you through the trap door and says, "What tha hell..."

The thug becomes so much next week's special at All World's Meat under Vaddis' blade. The paladin backs up when there's a sharp pain in his side. Vaddis, you have an arrow sticking through your ribcage just under your armpit. 5 pts damage.

The last upright thug changes direction towards Tarrov as Toke appears in the doorway. Verik is nocking another arrow and shouting, "Don't let him throw that phial!"

Toke, Vaddis is clear if the target is Verik. Not clear if the target is the thug. Vaddis, the thug isn't too bright. He's charging past you. You get an Attk of Opportunity if you want it. Tarrov, Verik is within range.

Selvin, the trapdoor is ten feet off the floor. Besides the leather and spider clad doofus, you see three thugs up there. But it sounds like there are more out of your field of vision.

Re: Assault on Eel's End

Sorry folks. I was ill when I wrote my last post, so I can see where it has caused some confusion.

Verik is indeed down on the ground (Dead now probably). The three thugs Tarrov hit with a sleep spell are still snoring away.

There were reinforcements coming down the side hall to the east. However, a voice behind them...you think it was Helvara the Madam's...called them back, saying the guard was raiding the pier. The 'boots' seem to be retreating the way they came.

I'm working up the next post. Sorry again for the trouble.

In reply to The Dealer (msg # 92):

Verik raises a hand as Vaddis slices downwards. It does him little good. The blade passes through his chest and he begins to bleed out.

The noise from down the hall lessens. Above however, there seems to be some kind of melee. Through the ceiling, you can hear what sounds like fighting on the deck above.

A moment later, Helvara herself peeks around the corner of the hallway to the east. She glances around nervously. "Is it done?"

"Helvara!"  Tarrov said with relief.  "It's good to see you.  I think we've accomplished our goals, but we cannot say for sure.  I think I saw Devargo being attacked by his own spiders, but it's hard to say."

He followed the rest of the group as they began heading abovedecks, continuing his conversation with the madame.  "What does the situation look like up there?"

Helvara laughs a nit nervously. "About what you would imagine. Devargo was set upon by his own...'pets'. Now his crew is fighting amongst themselves or looting what they can." She holds up a hand to stop you all from advancing down the hallway. "I would let them finish themselves off. One way or the other, Devargo's organization is coming apart at the joints." Her smile is a bit more satisfied at the thought. "What about your allies? How soon will they move in to take over?"

"Well, about that," said Tarrov, a rueful look on his face.  "That is one of our allies right there," he pointed at Verik's supine form, "and this is another."  He walked over to Malder and helped the man drag himself to his feet.  "The bad news is that we were betrayed right in the midst of our assault on the ship.  The good news is that we seem to have survived that betrayal none the worse for wear."  He gave Malder a sympathetic look.  "Well, mostly."

"But as I told you when we met earlier, Helvara, we have no desire to 'take over.'  Your palace of pleasures is yours free and clear, as far as we are concerned.  We stake no claim to it."

The bard turned to the big warrior.  "Malder, what happened here?  Any idea what came over Verik?  Did he say anything to you?"  Tarrov scratched his head as he looked down at Verik's body.  "I'm a little taken aback by this.  More than normal, even.  It seems so . . . uncharacteristic of him, from what I could tell."

Well.  Tarrov looked down at Verik, back to Malder, then back to Verik again.  I guess we've accomplished our task for Field Marshal Kroft.  Most of it, anyway.

"This has to be tough for you, Malder, having worked with Verik so closely.  Had he given any signs that he wasn't everything he seemed?  What about this woman he'd been reputedly seeing?  Do you know who she is, or where she is?  Maybe she knows something."  Tarrov continued to contemplate Verik's body, thoughtfully rubbing his chin with his forefinger and thumb.  "I'd like to figure out why someone who had such a grudge against Kindness would suddenly turn on us just as we were assaulting him in his lair."

"Also, there's the matter of," Tarrov lowered his voice.  "The Queen.  You know what Verik knew about her, and according to him once we knew what he knew we'd have a much-different opinion of Her Recently-Elevated Majesty.  I'd still like to know what that was, and I think," he waved his arm through the air, indicating the Eel's End, "we've come through with our part of the bargain."

Selvin sat back on his haunches and began cleaning himself as he listened to Malder and eyed the man. He listened to what Tarrov said in response and the question....and again he wondered if he really wanted to know the information about the Queen. He had never been what might be called patriotic, but he didn't know that getting caught up with secret knowledge of a royal was a good thing.

Malder rubs the back of his neck and leans against the wall. "Yeah. He was shackin' up with some lady. She musta had some money too. Cos he would sometimes come up with stuff. Ya know. A ring which wasn't just cheap junk. And this fur lined cape. But I don' know who she was. We weren't drinkin' buddies. But...I do know she lived somewhere north in the city. Maybe Old Korvosa or such. I never paid much attention to it."

He frowns and thinks a moment. "He's got some letters. Back in the meat market. Maybe that's got somethin'. As ta tha Queen...well. Verik was always one a' those who talked bad about her. She was a gold diggin' whore. No offense," he adds, looking at Helvara. The madame shrugs it off. Malder continues. "But...well. Right afore we deserted...tha night tha King died...Verik got kinda weird. Especially towards the female officers. He got kinda cagey and told me that once tha Queen an' 'her tramp' took over, no one would get promoted 'less they had blond hair, two tits, an' a tan." Malder waves a hand. "It was kinda odd. "But those letters sound like a good place to start.  How about we search the Eel's End for any useful information or equipment, then head back to All the World's Meat to take a look at those letters and see what they can tell us?"  He looked around at his companions.  "What do you gentlemen think?"

Re: Assault on Eel's End

You all scamper about the deck you're on, noses twitching, nostrils flaring as you search for the knick knacks and shiny thongs which make everyone's heart go pitter-pat.

There is a hold at the far end of the hallway, but it is crammed with suprisingly dull things. Table cloths. Buckets of nails. A chest of drawers where all the compartments are filled woth strings of gaudily colored wooden beads. Bottles of wine which have been uncorked, watered down, and resealed. A box of differently colored feathers. Crates which contain cooking pots. A few coils of sevicable rope. Nothing much.

You find a small room which Toke verifies as a shover lab. There are a few small, empty vials and tools your resident alchemist can make use of, all of a fine variety. There are seven stoppered tubes which contain liquid. Six are refined Shiver. The last is pure dream spider venom. Treasure here: masterwork alchemists kit. Six vials of shiver worth 25 gp each. Three doses dream spider venom.

Of more interest to the rest of you is the room the northern swarm of spiders came out. It appears to have been Devargo's personal quarters. A foot locker is pushed under the bed. Inside you find what must have been Devargo's nest egg. Devargo did not seem to like coins. There are only a few handfuls here. Instead he appears to have prefered to convert cash to more portable currency. A fine amulet of jasper. A gold necklace studded with emeralds. A small horn inlaid with mother of pearl. A ring with a tiny jade dragonfly engraved on it. Also inside are a bundle of letters, a satchet with some odd greyish dust, and a plain cap such as huntsmen wear. The kind lined with wool and sporting earflaps that come down on each side of it. Not exactly chic. There is also a bundle of letters tied up with string. The letters appear to be some correspondence between a Dulac Rossen, a Chelish ambassador to the city, and some woman who goes by the initials A.N. The contents of the letters are what you would expect. Devargo must have been blackmailing one or both of the authors. The druglord does have some finely tailored suits on hangers in his room. He was nothing if not stylish in his evil. Treasure here: the first three pieces of jewelry listed are worth maybe about 1100 gp combined. The dragonfly ring, the dust, and the hat all sniff of magic. The blackmail letters are yours to do with as you wish.

Also in Devargo's room are several versions of a letter he was drafting. The best version reads as follows:

To my dearest Patience,

Your offer is an interesting one, though one I must pass on. I have not, nor have ever been, interested in the world of politics. Kings and nobles come and go. Only vice is constant. Everyman wants to fuck and smoke and drink himself into oblivion, in order to forget the cares of this world. I have made quite a nice little perch for myself providing those needs. Why would I want to come down from it?

As to your insinuation that if we can not be allies then we must be enemies...well. I hope your faith in your fine stone walls is well placed. Everything dies fine lady. Everything. Why not live until that moment comes?

From Kindness with kindness
To Patience impatient

By the time you get to the deck above, the party has moved elsewhere. A quick glance outside shows that there's a riot on the pier. The guard has arrved in small batches but more can be seen coming down the way. You quickly head back inside to see what valuables are still available.

The room above where you killed Whatever-It-Was is a small audience chamber, complete with gaudy wooden throne. A spider covered corpse, ypu assume this is Devargo, lays on the floor. His facial expression is nothing short of horrific. If you wee hoping for a grisly end to the man known as Kindness, you have gotten your wish. Some of you go about the delicate task of searching his spider covered body while the rest search the rest of the parlor.

Devargo's corpse is dressed in a finely made suit of black leather armor. Small glyphs are stitched along one side of it. He wears two well made bladed gauntlets and a light, finely crafted crossbow sits to one side of his throne. There are two stoppered vials in a pouch on his belt. One contains a light purplish looking liquid. The other liquid is mostly clear and thick. He wears two rings, one set with a diamond and one silver one carved with a spider.

There are a few other bodies. Most have a handful of coins on them, but little else of interest.

Hanging from the ceiling by a fine chain is a small cage. Inside is a sleek, winged lizard. A psuedodragon. They are common to the city. As you go about your business, the psuedodragon looks at each of you. The words "Free me..." form in your minds.

Treasure here: Leather armor of the magical variety. +1 to be exact. Two masterwork bladed gauntlets. Masterwork light crossbow. The two rings are simple jewelery worth 300 gp in total. The purplish liquid is cure light wounds, two doses. Purple potions are always healing in  my games. The clear liquid is anyone's guess. The coins you find amount to 55 gp. The psuedodragon is what it is.
