Assault on Eel's End

Maps should be uploaded. Group 0 map is the pier. C2 is Devargo's ship. Group 1 map will be the play map.

The boat turns out to be older than any of you and small enough to make sure you are all uncomfortably sitting in each other's laps. Fortune favors you with a thick cover of clouds. The moon winks from behind it now and again, but Malder proves to be adept at guiding your craft from shadow to shadow until you are under the pier.

Above, you can see the soles of countless boots and dirty, bare feet. The bang of a bass drum thrums above the noise of the crowd. The wooden boards above you creak and groan. A few sag and one actually bounces over your head, but they all hold. Whatever else will happen tonight, the pier at least will not come crashing down on your heads.

Ahead the hull of the Eel's End slides into view. Just as you saw from the brothel's porthole, large chunks of the hull are missing. Verik surveys the water and hefts his spear. Without a word he slides over the side and into the water. He surfaces just outside a large hole and then slips insode the ship. He signals for you all to follow.

The water is icy cold and black. Your body goes numb, but your fingers feel the side of the ship. Soon you force yourselves through a hole and into a small hold beyond inside the ship.

The floor here is almost non existant. As you attempt to pull yourself on to it, the wood gives way. You give up and tread water. A small light suddenly fills the room. Verik holds a small stone which appears to be glamoured with a light spell. He covers part of it with his sleeve, but enough light leaks out to show a wall seperating this part of the hold from the rest. Two doors are built into the wall, both decayed from years of neglect and water damage.

Malder breaks surface next to Vaddis. He blows water out of his nose and frowns at Verik. He then nods to the doors. "Shall we?"

Re: Assault on Eel's End

Tarrov was glad he had changed into something a little less ostentatious and a little more suited to swimming through dark waters to assault the boat of an infamous, spider-commanding criminal.  The bard was now wearing a loose-fitting pair of black trousers, a black undershirt, and a black cloak folded up and tied in a square that he did his best to keep out of the water as he stole into the ship alongside Malder, Vaddis, and the rest.

He emerged from the water and threw his cloak up onto what remained of the rotted wooden floor, gently testing it to ensure it would hold his weight.  His drenched trousers were no longer so loose-fitting, and his undershirt wasn't much better.

It was COLD.

Well, there was nothing for it now.  As he unhooked the whip from his belt, Tarrov nodded at Malder and Vaddis, indicating that one of them should have a go at opening one of the doors.  If combat was necessary, the bard much preferred experiencing it from behind the well-trained torsos of one of his more martial companions.

Re: Assault on Eel's End

Vaddis pulls himself up out of the water enough to reach the door handle, and tests it to see if it is locked.

OOC - Is there a space where we can get up on the 'deck' or 'ribs' or keel of the ship to get out of the water?

Re: Assault on Eel's End

Selvin summons his ally while they are waiting so he can be ready. He wasn't happy being cooped up and cramped in the boat with everyone but he kept silent and kept his grumbling in his head. He tries to huddle down further when the boards above their heads are sagging and bouncing. That would be just his luck to get knocked out by a stray board before the actual mission begins.

He sighs and slips into the water, shivering a bit and trying to hurry. He does, however, keep an eye on Toke and the person helping him to make sure the alchemist makes it okay. Not that Selvin is really a strong swimmer himself normally. He's only been in the water maybe twice in his whole life!

Selvin gives a nod and tries to get some of the water off of him but restrains himself from shaking himself dry like a big cat. "Which door? An' we should check fer traps, yah?"

Re: Assault on Eel's End

Toke broke surface with Malder, having used him as a guide and ballast. He spat out water and wiped away the water from his eyes, his whimpering barely audible amongst the splashing and spitting of the group. This was even worse than he thought; cold and wet and scary. He regretted his silence immediately upon entering the water and even more now.  He had to keep calm, keep from panicking, focus on the prize. He heard someone speaking.

That's it, focus on the words not on where you are. He replied in a hoarse whipser. "Sorry, in my job it pays to look the other way, though if you find something, I might be able to help with that." He paused a moment, thinking about how he could help. His eyes brightened as he remembered, he held up a vial of dull violet liquid. "Oh yeah, I have this if you need it, it'll allow you to see better in dim light."

The vial is the Keen Senses, extract.

Re: Assault on Eel's End

As Vaddis tries to pull himself onto the flooring, the wood groans and snaps. It seems a little more solid the closer to the wall and doors. The burly warrior manages to pull himself onto a ledge in front of one of the doors. Malder manages the same in front of the other. "This 'un looks clear..." the mercenary hisses. The door before Vaddis appears clear as well.

Malder nods to Vaddis, holds up three fingers, counts down, and opens his door. He scans inside and then nods. "Both doors lead inta a hold," he whispers.

The large area beyond is ankle deep in water. What it lacks in mold, it makes up for in odor. But it seems to be clear and the floor here is mercifully stronger. You all haul yourselves up into the hold. Outside of the brackish water, the only feature is a hole cut in the ceiling. A slimy rope hangs from the hole and down into the water at your feet, offering the only way up to the level above. Torchlight spills through the hole. From somewhere above you hear voices raised in raucous laughter. But they sound far away. A few small spiders skitter along the ceiling. Other than that, there is no sign of life.

Updating group 1 map. C16 is your current location. C10 is the mouth of the hole in the floor of the level above you.

Re: Assault on Eel's End

Tarrov sloshed carefully through the water to look up at the hole in his ceiling, glad he wasn't wearing his good boots but still uncomfortably aware of his soaked socks.  He was grateful for the firmer footing, though.  "What an incredible smell you've discovered," he whispered, grinning at Vaddis and Malder.

The bard pointed at the rope.  "Looks like there's only one way up?"  He looked at the slime-covered hemp with distaste.  Maybe some of it would rub off when the others climbed up.  "Who wants to go first?"

Re: Assault on Eel's End

Game Map 1 updated.

The rope is slimy and frayed in spots. But Selvin's claws help him scurry up the rope and over the lip if the hole.

The hole stands at the end of a hallway. At the other end of the hall is a set of double doors. Other doors, two on each side, line the hallway. A small corridor branches off to the west. The sound of voices seems to be coming from down this side hall.

A few small spiders scurry along the walls up here. But you see no guards or any other sign of life.

Tarrov grabbed the rope and attempted to climb up, but it was difficult going.  He wasn't sure he'd be able to make it to the top.  He looked up at Selvin.  "Selvin," he said in a loud whisper.  "Do you think you can pull me up?"

Selvin peeked down the hole again when he heard his name. He frowned down and hesitated but then nodded. He tried to steady the rope and/or pull it up towards him to help the other people as needed. The problem was, he wasn't an exceptional climber himself so he wasn't very good at helping others.

15:47, Today: Selvin Larst rolled 8 using 1d20+2. Climbing assist.

"Okay," Tarrov said, looking around at their many door-using options.  "We're trying to find the creature that controls these spiders for Devargo.  Our intelligence suggests that its under Devargo's audience chamber.  And Madame Helvara indicated that the audience chamber was in the back of the boat."  The bard jerked a thumb over his shoulder in a generally aft direction.

"Those double doors across the room," he pointed, "go fore, not aft.  Looks to me like we need to take one of these two nearest doors," he put out his hand, thumb and pinky finger extended, and wiggled it slightly, "and try to find which one takes us to the creature."

He looked at his drenched associates.  "Either one is fine with me."

Selvin listened and nodded. That made sense, to check under Devargo first. He wondered what was controlling the spiders. He made his way in the direction they were going: aft.

Re: Assault on Eel's End

Let's assume north is the top of the map. There are aft doors to the east and west. No noise can be heard coming from either one.
