Summoning Street

Lavendar's Fine Perfumes sits in the middle of a row of shops on Summoning Street. The store fronts around it all reflect fine goods for sale. A lace shop. Two different milliner's. A cobbler specializing in riding boots. This isn't a section of town frequented by those that need to struggle to survive in Korvosa.

Yet those people seem to be the bulk of today's customers. There is a line that extends halfway down the block, all waiting to get into Lavendar's. You note the tell tale rash on a few people's hand. But most seem to be here on behalf of a loved one. Or just because they want to purchase in case of infection. From what you can gather, many of the people have brought their life's savings to make the purchase. One woman says she has sold her wedding ring to help come up with the money. There are some in line who are better off. But they appear just as worried and scared as everyone else.

Two large, well dressed men with saps stand by the front door keeping an eye on the line. The line moves at a decent pace. Apparently there are workers inside who count the money quickly and then hand a small vial to each customer. You have to linger for an hour before your turn at the door comes.

One of the burly men nods at your weapons. "Leave those out here please." There is a box set just beside pne of them. It is mostly full of knives.

A young lady who seems tired from the never ending work smiles feebly at you and says, "How many doses please?"

Re: Summoning Street

The clerk smiles and hands over two small vials with nary a question. "Thank you for your business," she chirps.

Kasak is waiting a block away. He smiles and takes a vial from you. He uncorks it and sniffs. It smells vaguely floral. Not unpleasantly so. He lets a drop fall on his fingers and rubs it between them. "Oily....I would guess tearoot oil and maybe a bit of ambergris." He puts it to his lips and drinks a small bit. The cleric swishes it around his mouth and then spits it out. He takes a small, introcately carved wand from his bag and mutters a nonsensical phrase while he points the wand at the bottle. He studies the glass and then his hand where he rubbed the drop and sighs. "It's not magical. The herbs used are standard and completely useless in curing anything outside a bad taste in the mouth. I know an alchemist who can confirm it. But this is a sham. I'd bet my life on it." He smiles sadly at the statement and then shakes his head. "Assuming the alchemist agrees with my assessment, we need to shut her down. I want to send a message to anyone who will try something similar. Praying on people's fear and despair is not acceptable. "

You accompany him to an old shop run by a gnome. The gnome runs the sample through several tests and confirms Kasak's opinion. Kasak nods and looks at you all. "I am going to go to the Guard. Will you keep an eye on Vendra's shop? I am afraid she may try and make a break for it seeing as how she has made quite a profit today."

Izzick had not headed inside, instead remaining with Kasak, but once they returned, he took his own whiff of the concoction. His orc nose was more delicate than a human's, but he doubted he'd pick up anything more. A sham was a sham. "That we can't shut it down without her packing up for certain is even worse," he said, lips curling around his tusks. "Or at least get that money for the Vault. I'm sure that would go a good way in paying for actual healers."

Re: Summoning Street

You all return to Summoning Street shortly before sunset and take up a position in an alley across the way and two doors down. The shop is in plain view.  The line of hopeful customers  is still there, though much shorter. But apparenty the people are out of luck. The strapping young men with saps are telling people the shop is closing for the night. Some...many actually...protest. But the guards are firm though polite. The crod begins to break up. You do see some people who move away but don't quit the scene. Perhaps they are planning to stay overnight so as to secure a place near the front of tomorrow's line.

The shop's assistants leave, and it appears the shop is locking up when someone shouts, "WAIT!" A middle aged woman comes barreling down the street. You see one of the vials clutched in her hand. "WAIT!!!"

She nearly plows into one of the guards, who stops her as gently as her momentum allows. You hear him say something but the woman leaps back and waves the vial in his face. "It didn'work! My Johann is still with tha sickness! He still got the Veil! It didn' work!"

She says it loud enough thst everyone on the street can hear her. The guard is asking her to quiet down but she is amost screaming the same thing over and over. The guards look confused and those who were going to spend the night are muttering angrily. Things look like they may go bad quickly.

Before you can move to intervene though, a woman comes out of the shop and uickly approaches the screaming woman. "Hey now. Hey. I am Vendra. This is my shop. What's wrong here?" Vendra is a beauty. Her small moon like face is crwned by a full head of rich brown hair. Even from here you can see her deep green eyes. She smiles and it is quite a radiant smile. The distraught customer begins to calm down.

Vendra speaks to her in a low soft voice and soon calms the woman down. Yu can't hear what either says but in a few moments, Vendra is leading the woman into the shop. She says something to the guards. Most of the men leave though one takes up a station just outside the door. Vendra opens the door for the lady and enters behind her. The door shuts firmly.

The sun sets.

Some of the crowd wander away. Others find places to sit or lay down for the night. The guard on duty yawns and looks up at the sky. After an hour, neither Vendra or the distraught woman have emerged from the shop.

The guard blinks sleepily than not so sleepily. He scrambles backwards and falls as Selvin et al smashes through the thin wooden door into the shop.

Izzick and Vaddis, you see the people down the block who were camping out begin to rise, awakened by the commotion. The guard crabwalks backwards and runs. Apparently he isn't getting paid too much.

The front room of the shop is as you recall it. There is a open doorway in the back of the room with a curtain drawn across it. It leads to a short hallway. Three doors open off the hallway. One seems to be a store room of sorts. Another a small office. As expected, the old woman is laying crumpled on the floor. The last doorway seems to lead back on to the alley.

Re: Summoning Street

The woman was dead at least a half hour ago Vaddis . The stab wound is through the back of her neck.

The back door lets out on to a small courtyard of sorts. It looks like the backs of all the neighboring shops back up to it and create a closed cul de sac. One of the shops across the way appears to have turned it's backspace into a small row of rooms for rent. Probably living spaces for shop workers or merchants who don't have room above the shop to live. There is a small sewer grate in the middle of the courtyard, but unless Vendra went on a radical diet, you doubt she slipped through that way. The spaces between the shops is similarly small. Not even a greased gnome could slide between them. Vendra's only means of exit were through her shop, over the roof, or through one of the other shop's doors.

There are five total doors in the area, not counting the one into Lavendar. One of them is boarded up. Two are to other shops and appear to be locked. The other two look to go into small rooms as described before. Both of the doors are closed.

Outside of some residual malice in the room, you detect nothing in the shop Vaddis. The courtyard also has some residual spoor. One of the apartment doors whiffs more strongly.

There's one likely spot she may have shimmied up to the roof of an adjoining shop. A drain pipe barely nailed against the wall. It is pulled part way out.

Tarrov made his way back across the city to Lavendar's Fine Perfumes, the last place to which he'd heard his companions were headed.  He felt sure he could pick up their trail there and rejoin them before too much of the evening had gone by.

But when he arrived, the huge commotion indicated that they might still be there. Conversations with some of those in the street got him up to speed on the situation, conversations in which the name "Vendra" figured prominently.  He canvassed those gathered for information about Vendra, what she might be up to, and where she might have gone.

Tarrov sighed as he looked at the smashed, splintered door.  Always the very-direct approach.

The bard walked inside the store just in time to see Vaddis kick in yet another door . . . .

Re: Summoning Street

The door swings wildly open and slams into the wall. The four of you stare inside.

The room beyond is weakly lit by the flame inside a small paper lantern. It appears to be a small two room apartment. The walls are adorned with delicate wall hangings. Candles of various hues and sizes are set out on every piece of furniture around. A second door just off the small kitchenette leads to a cramped but nicely furnished bedroom. The air inside smells of cherry wood.

A satchel stuffed with clothes sits on the floor of the bedroom. A couple of sheets of paper lay on the bed. Letters from the look of it. A small bag filled to the brim with coins is set next to the letters.

There's no one here though.

Vendra is well known as a perfumer. She's one of the premier 'scents of the elite' in town. Of course, she has a history. When she first came to Korvosa she was hocking a cure all called Luxurious Linement. The stuff was snake oil but Vendra makes a good sales pitch. She supposedly does some work for a few small guilds in town. Learning when her clients won't be at home, the schedule for their security details. That sort of thing. But other than an information broker and cheap charlatan, she isn't hooked into anyone heavy thay you know of Tarrov. Honestly she is fairly good as a perfumer. Why she even bothers with crime is a bit of a mystery.

The two letters are...surprise...vague and mysterious. One is to a Loretta Scaripani. The Scaripani family are actually a powerful noble family in Old Korvosa. They may be one of the most powerful families in the city actually. The letter seems to be just a sales order really. ...loved the jasmine fragrance you sent, it reads. I simply must have more. And perhaps some of those candles with the honeysuckle scent. Unlike you, my night vision is not so good... it reads.

The other letter is an oddity. It is a love letter but in the same way a whore is a girlfriend. The author, one Girrigiz, seems to be well accquainted with Vendra's charms. The content of the letter is pretty much what you would imagine. What makes it odd is the writing. The print is labored, as if done by a young schoolchild still learning his letters. The spelling and grammar though are on an adult level. There are also small tears in the paper as if the writer put too much pressure on the quill and actually poked the tip through. The paper also has an unpleasant odor. Like a refuse dump or open sewer.

Under the letter from Girrigiz is a small opened vial. A drop of some kind of greyish liquid still clings to the rim.

Re: Summoning Street

The stench is indeed strong Izzick. However you pick up what you think are traces of her scent. It's not hard. She must have bathed in her terrible perfumes. There does seem to be some sort of 'understench', for lack of a better term. A smell like wet, dirty fur. It is similarto the stink on the letter.

Vaddis, you find a small catch on one wall. Flipping it releases a section of the wall which swings open on a hinge. From the location, it must open onto the next apartment. The one ith the boarded up door.

The net apartment is a mess. There are several patches in the roof where parts of it collapsed. Along one wall is what must hve been Vendra's work space. Lines of small vials and tubes cover shelves on the wall. Most seem to be ordinry perfumer's materials. There is a box sitting on a small work bench under them. Black wood...it is the same kind of box that's been washing up on shore. There is a small notebook set next to it. It is mostly full of perfume recipies. But the last two pages seem to contain notes about the box. It appears Vendra was actually researching it.

...not sure what she's looking for here... the notes read. Most assuredly necromantic. But not in and of itself deadly...

There are some nonsense symbols. Alchemical ones perhaps. They make little sense and seem to be musings about some kind of concoction. The notes continue. THE COINS!!! This is underlined. Paid Ehert for wand. Need to pick it up. Probably already infected. And then, It would take months to work out an antidote. Draws blood upwards. Not worth going back to Racker's. Cash in and get out. Ehert should have wand ready tomorrow. I got order in just in time...

Ehert is a fairly well known enchanter who specializes in custom making wands. Racker's might mean Racker's Alley. A fairly infamous little spot in North Point that's well known as a haunt for pickpockets and thugs. The rest...well. You'll figure it out.

Ehert's shop is on the corner of two lanes, not far down the way. The building looks secured when you arrive. Shortly before dawn, staff begin to arrive and go about setting up for the day's business. No one seems to be acting suspiciously.

Shortly after wunrise, the traffic on the streets begins to pick up. Regardless of whether there are plague concerns or not, people still have work or business to attend to. When the clerk unlocks the front door there is a customer waiting. An elderly lady dressed like someone's maid. She hands the clerk a note and small pouch. He checks it and then disappears into the depths of the shop. He reappears with a package, about a foot long and a few inches wide and hands it to the maid. They seem to make some small talk and then the maid leaves.

No one else is queueing up this early.

The two of you with canine like noses both catch the same scent. The elderly maid smells like Vendra's shop.

"Mercy," she says, almost pulling her bonnet down over her ears. "Why bless you! Things in Korvosa have become awful, ain't they?"

She accepts the package from the clerk and tucks it under one arm. "Oh my. I'm almost terrified to step foot outside in the mornings. And my Lady was so frantic! She came by before sun was up, poundin' on my door and askin' me to fetch this." As you step outside she huddles a bit closer to Tarrov and Vaddis as she eyes Izzick and Selvin/Etc

"Oh, it's quite all right," said Tarrov, waving a hand towards Izzick and Selvin, "they look menacing, but they're good men both.  And these days it pays to have a little menace on your side, am I right?"  He raised an eyebrow, then offered an arm to the woman.  "Let me escort you, milady.  Now, where exactly is it that we are going?  And why don't you tell me about your lady as we walk?  She sounds fascinating, and she's certainly lucky to have you for an assistant!"

I wonder if she ain't gone an' gotten herself in o'er her head." She licks her lips nervously. "She...uh...seemed a might distressed when she showed up this morn. Selvin and Vaddis, you notice someone following you. It could be he's going the same way. But as the maid takes you off the main road and through some of the less cleaner paths in the dorection of North Point, the odds of someone jut happening to be going in the same direction diminish.

He is young. Perhaps twelve or thirteen summers. Human. He wears tattered clothes nd no shoes. But what makes him distinctive is the eyepatch. And his feet look brown. As if covered in mud.

They are a nasty bunch." She shakes her head. "My Lady can be quite the fool sometimes when it comes ta men." She frowns. "Quite the fool," she mutters.

The boy has been joined. A larger fellow walking along the other side of the street. The area you are in is much more run down. You are coming into some of the worst tha Korvosa has to offer. The buildings around are sparsely populated. Those that do are here because they have no further to fall. Turning to whoring or selling rugs is a step up for these people. You're coming to the area known as Racker's Alley. No one goes to Racker's unless they are looking to end things.

"Should we call them out," Izzick says in a hushed whisper to his companions. Before, certainly, they could have been mistaken, but now it was almost certain that they were being followed and by more than one. Then again, in the part of town they were in, it was just as likely to be dangerous to stop as to go on. "And are we certain we're going the right way?"

I'm going to try and use Sense Motive to see if the maid actually seems to be under the spell or lying if that's possible?

Selvin frowned. This seemed very too...odd and convenient. The maid knew who might be following them. He had doubts that this was a maid to the woman they were after. He was still pretty suspicious it was the woman they were after disguised. He wanted to turn and fight those coming up behind them before the trap closed in front of them as well. But he had no proof, just suspicions.

"Is it time yet t'take care o'the ones followin' us? Or are we waitin' 'til she takes us where ever the best spot for them is at?"

The rat man bats Zac's stinger aside Selvin, which leaves him open for your claws. You manage to gouge him, but it is like tearing at a sack of wet cement. He bleeds red though.

The one charging the bard and sorcerer leaps aside as Tarrov's whip cracks at the place he was. He lands nimbly and begins charging at you again.

King Rat ducks under the swish of Vaddis' blade. He tries to turn it into an uppercut/slash but the paladin steps back with ease. Over Vaddis' shoulder comes a beam of light. It strikes King Rat in the eyes and he swears. "Damn Bitch!"

Things were going from bad to worse.  Tarrov had been embarrassed that he hadn't seen through Vendra's deception, but a little embarrassment was pretty small potatoes when compared with an attack by a committed clan of wererats.  The bard backed away from the onrushing wererat, his whip snaking out in an attempt to bring it to the ground . . .

The rat charging Izzick and Tarrov again dances to one side to avoid the whip. He backs up and takes a few steps before leaping. He seems to have decided just to jump at you rather than try charging.

Selvin's rat moves his head to avoid being bitten. The Elf/Zac slam their claws upwards while the stinger slams downwards. All pointy edges connect under the wererat's chin and above his snout. He goes down with his throat torn open.

King Rat tries to dance backwards but being blinded, he manages to just present an openong for Vaddis. The paladin strikes downward and manages a savage blow on the big wererat's shoulder. King Rat is still up though.
