Hospice of the Blessed Maiden

The guard at least was helpful.

You found no survivors in the wreck of the Corawyn ball. But you managed to escape alive and with some information. The guard you alerted came and gave you no grief. So at least they were helpful. But as they took your statements, a couple of those Grey Maidens appeared. Fierce and brutal looking female knights wrapped completely in iron armor. The Grey Maidens looked at you through the thin eye slits in their full helms as if you weren't there. They simply ordered you away from the scene. The guard officer who had been taking your statements told you to go ahead and head out. "Damn harpies..."he had muttered under his breath.

The four of you went back to the Inn and fell into your beds. You spent the nxt couple of days recuperating. And outside, the Blood Veil sank it's talons deeper into the city. News of riots in north Korvosa filtered throught the streets. Death carts stacked with bodies made their way along the lane three or four times a day. You healed up, sharpened your blades, studied your books, and considered.

Tarrov, you checked around about B7 but came up with nothing. No one seems to know a thing.

The tattoo...well. You all figured that out after the part. When the two Grey Maidens showed up. The scar on the monk's chest looked like one of the overly armored knights. Could the monk have connections with the Grey Maidens?

Rumors about the Queen's new all female guard swim along the streets of Korvosa almost as thick as does news of the plague. The Maidens are almost universally despised. They are merciless in the performance of their duties. Bar brawls are settled with the beheading of everyone involved. Thieves are crucified, often with no trial. Edicts from the Queen are ruthlessly enforced. The Grey Maidens are quiet as they perform their duties. Few claim to have heard any of them speak aloud.

The remaining clue available to you is the note on Yelley's body. Rolth commanded her to seek him out at a Hospice. The location in the letter points to the Hospice of the Blessed Maiden. A make shift plague hospital being run from a confiscated warehouse. The hospice is supposedly being run by the Queen's Physicians. Security is provided by the Grey Maidens.

Surely Rolth couldn't be there. Right?

Re: Hospice of the Blessed Maiden

Selvin gave the guard an appreciative nod at his help. It was always nice to have someone to work with, rather than someone being an obstinate a-hole. Like, for instance, the Grey Maidens who showed up. Selvin couldn't help but growl slightly at them when they ordered the group to leave. He agreed with the guard's comment silently as he left.

Relaxation was nice. Healing up his ally felt good - he didn't like having Zak damaged. He felt bad that thought they were working together, the symbiotic Eidolon took the brunt of the damage in their fights.

"So. We should follow the note t'this Hospice place then. I wanna find this Rolth, find out if he's connected t'the Queen an' her new...guardswomen...or not an' stop all this craziness. Does anyone need t'do anything t'prepare?"

Re: Hospice of the Blessed Maiden

Okay. Let me know in the OOC thread what the decision is on selling items and if you're buying anything by Friday. We can assume ya'll do it on the way. Thanks.

Korvosa is quiet this afternoon. The heat of summer is starting but this isn't the typical quiet because of the afternoon sun. You pass several buildings with boarded up windows. The trash lays in larger piles. The garbage collectors are either hauling body wagons or have fled or have died. Korvosa smells worse than usual. Like a whale that's been beached and has died, now left rotting in the sun. That's Korvosa this afternoon. You may wonder if there's anything left worth saving.

There aren't many of the Watch out. The Inn Keeper had told you that there were bad riots last night in the north of town. Someone made the decision to seal off the island of Old Korvosa and it had lead to panic which lead to the riots. When the slight breeze that is blowing blows from that direction you catch the faint whiff of smoke.

But you are heading East. The district the Hospice is in is along the wharfs. The Hospice of the Blessed Maiden is a converted warehouse. You view it from across the street. One of the many buildings converted by the Queen's Physicians to house the affected, it sits on a corner of two roads. A few of the jacketed and masked plague doctors are entering and leaving. As well as a couple of the overly armored female warriors called the Grey Maidens. A few prospective patients strafgle in as well.

There is a main entrance in front. There also looks to be an entry in back: the old loading bay from when this was a warehouse. Three large thick doors allow entry there. They are all closed.

The people around the building clear. There is no one in the street at the moment.

Tarrov knelt next to the group, observing the building.  "Shall we enter through the back?"  He inquires.  "I might be able to talk us out of any trouble we might encounter.  And perhaps find out of Rolth is in there."

The silver-haired entertainer gives the Grey Maidens a sour look.  "I'm pretty sure that organization is up to no good.  That tattoo . . . ."  He grunts in frustration.  "We just don't know enough about what's going on around here.  But I'm betting we'll find some answers," he nods at the building in front of them, "in there."

"Is there going to be an unguarded back here?" Izzick suggested, though as he pointed out a few of the doctors, he considered aloud, "If we could get our hands on a plague doctor's suit, we might be able to get inside fairly easily." His morning reading of the harrow had boded a Chaotic Evil card - The Lost. A warning - and yet, he knew that whatever they faced, a calm mind would serve him well. "We could fake illness easily enough I suppose, but I don't think I don't think our lot to mind a little force against those masked frauds."

Thats a +2 to one Wisdom check today - these cards love giving me wisdom.

Selvin nodded at Tarrov. "I vote the back." He looked down at himself, 'covered' by his otherworldly ally as they hid across the street. "It....may be a problem for me to enter with you. I am quite noticeable. I could...dismiss Zac, but it takes a minute to re-summon him, not something I can do in the midst of combat."

"Hmmm," said Tarrov, thinking.  "Well, I do have this handy magical chapeau," he pointed to his head, "that would allow me to take on the appearance of a doctor."  He grinned.  "Or even a Gray Maiden!  Although I think that would probably not be the best choice."

The performer nodded at Selvin.  "Well, I think I have a solution.  I can deflect people's attention from you.  It's almost like you're . . . invisible.  As long as you don't take a hostile action, you can remain unnoticed for several minutes."  He looked around the group.  "I can do the same for any of you, although it does take some effort and will make me less effective as the day progresses."

"How about this?"  He suggested.  "I disguise myself as a doctor and render Selvin unnoticeable.  The rest of you can accompany me in through the back.  And if we get stopped?  Well, hopefully I can talk us out of it.  If I can't?"  He grinned.  "Well, I'm sure you'll all be ready for that, won't you?"

Oddly there is no one in back. There are three large doors leading in, though all are shut tight and appear to be barred on the other side from opening. It would probably be possible to slide a blade through the crack in the door and lift the bar up on any of them. But you might not be able to set it down quietly.

All three doors are barred on the other side. There are probably multiple ways to open them. Just giving the obvious suggestion.

Peering through the crack in any of the doors doesn't provide much of a view. It seems to be a large, dark room full of crates.

"Perhaps if we make Selvin invisible, the front is our best option," Izzick considered, though he had no such magical ability to do that, he did have his own illusions. A simple spell seemed to have coated him in a glamor of a human sick with the plague. Though his voice sounded the same and he'd intentionally made the sickness look minor, he hoped it would suffice as long as Tarrov could lie for them all.

Selvin, you take a step after chanting and end up in a dimly lit room full of crates. It seems your spell went off without a hitch. The room looks like it has been unused in a while. You slip a bar off one od the doors leadong to the outside, and soon everyone is standing inside.

Other than the crates, there are doors in the south and east wall.

You can hear voices from beyond the doors. Moans and sighs of pain. The thump of boots along a stone floor. People calling for water.

The doors are old and it's easy to see through the cracks. It appears the area beyond this room is one large open space. Beds hve been lined up in rows. Victims of the plague lay in the beds, making pitiable cries. You see a few of those masked plague doctors roaming the area, as well as at least a couple of the heavily armored Gray Maidens. The door to the south seems to let out into the main area while the east door lets out onto some kind of administrative area. You see a desk, but can't make out much more without opening the door.

There is quite a bit of the areas beyond both doors you can't see yet.

Thanks Vaddis. This scouting shouldn't take too long...

The door opens up into the ward. The beds lining the floor are filled with oatients. A few beds hold more than one person. Four of the misquito masked Plague Doctors are wandering the beds, examining patients or offering them small vials of greenish liquid. There are also four of the Grey Maidens. The burly female warriors seem to have assigned posts, two near the front of the ward, one to the east, and one standing by the administrative area in the west.

At the moment no one seems to be paying attention to you.

Map is updated in Group 1. Grey blobs are grey maidens. Yellow blobs are Plague Doctors. I am assuming those venturing out the southern door from F3.

Selvin, the actual ceiling is at least forty feet above you. However, a layer of catwalks overhangs the main area. You can see some movement from up there. Another Grey Maiden at least. They have a sniper up there in case...what?

Tarrov, you start to cross to the doors when something catches your eye. One of the Plague Doctors is waving at you. He waits until you look at him. He then raises his right hand. He makes a fist, keeping the ring and little finger pointed out. He points these straight up at the ceiling and then moves his hand so they point to the left. He then rotates his fist, now sticking out the thumb and pointer so they form an L.

His mask stares at you, as if waiting for you to do something.

And no. You have no idea what that means other than it's some kind of signal.

"Hey there, my friend.  I'm new here, and my goodness, I'm already so busy that one thing just drives another straight out of my head."  He lowers his voice and leans in.  "Could you remind me about our signals?  I really don't want to get in trouble just starting out.  Also," he flicks a glance towards one of the room's grey guardians, "do I need to know anything to stay friendly with the Grey Maidens?"  Kerr leans closer.  "They're a little intimidating.  Also, can you tell anything else I might need to know about this building and the people in it?  I don't want to go accidentally wondering into the wrong place."

Re: Hospice of the Blessed Maiden

It is a great roll. This one is a bit difficult to adjucate. We'll go with this..

Selvin you notice the Grey Maiden by the admin desk in the northwest corner look up as Tarrov  approaches the Plague Doctor. She doesn't make any moves, other than to cock her head at an odd angle. Like a big dog might who is trying to understand what it's master is saying.

The Doctor looks at you fo a moment Tarrov. It's hard to read his expression since that misquito like mask is covering his face. Tarrov, as a side note, you have the same knd of mask on as well since you are disguised like they are. So he can't see your devilish smile. That has no impact on your bluff however. "I see.." he says after a moment. His voice is a bit craggy and rough. It may be an effect of the mask.

He raises a hand, palm turned away from you, and the last three fingers pointed up. "This is...'assist me'. When did you get in?"

Izzick, you notice one of the other Doctors look up when this guy makes his hand sign. Doctor Two sets down the vial of green fluid he was trying to pour down a comatose patients throat and begins to walk over to Tarrov and Doctor One.

I made some rolls.

Tarrov: This guy seems a bit suspicious but he isn't quite sure what to think. Something you said early on seemed to raise a flag to him.

Vaddis: I'm assuming you are watching what you can. You aren't seeing any hostile movement from anyone.

Selvin: The Grey Maiden is acting like she's surprised or confused about something. But she's not making any moves.

Izzy: Doctor 2 is just walking over in respinse to the signal. He isn't making an overt hostile moves at the moment.

Everyone: It's been a while since we described the Docs or the Greys. The Docs are wearing plague doctor masks and wearing leather trench coats with many pockets. The Grey Maidens are wearing full plate and only their eyes, lips,  and the backs of their hands are visible.

I'll update the map on positions later tonight. Thanks.

Not nearly soon enough, by the look of things.”  Tarrov kept his voice down, in keeping with the somber nature of the ward.  “I was told how things were here, but I didn’t realize how serious the situation was until I actually arrived and looked for myself.”  He gave the man a beseeching look.  “How about you give me a tour of the place, and help me keep my nose clean as best you can?”  He shrugged shamefacedly.  “You can start by refreshing my recollection on the rules of this place.

"Oh...ah...uhm..." Doctor 1 looks a bit woozy for a moment Tarrov, then he straightens up and turns, leading you to the administrative area. He says nothing for a moment, but as you get out of earshot of the patients, he speaks in a low, raspy whisper. "The sheep are stacked in color coded beds. There's a small dot on the lower right corner of each bedframe. This area serves as a testing center. Lady Andasin or Conte will send up batches dyed certain hues. You feed the concotion to anyone in a bed with a similarly colored dot. You serve a shift here and a shift on patrol." He shrugs. "Just act like a doctor and give any sheep who bleats some pain killer. It will make them feel well long enough for you to move on. Dead are sent below for Rolth. Simply stack them by the stairwell. Tarrov quickly subvocalized the information he'd gleaned from the doctor to the others before continuing with the conversation.

"Are there any other passwords or hand-signals I need to remember?"  Tarrov was extremely glad their gambit seemed to be working.  The doctor should be interested in helping him keep his nose clean for the duration of their stay.  At least Tarrov heartily hoped that their stay at this place wouldn't last long enough for his suggestive magic to wear off.

Izzick's incredibly-good idea came through almost as soon as the doctor was finished responding to Tarrov's question.  The disguised entertainer nodded thankfully at the bewitched doctor, then headed out to where Izzick was located.  "I'm going to be taking Izzick downstairs," Tarrov informed the group.  "Selvin and Vaddis, you need to come along as well.  Selvin, can you make Vaddis invisible?  I'll open the door for him to get out of the storage room like I am accidentally going the wrong way and realizing my mistake."

Izzick isn't  the lightest package you've ever carried, Tarrov. But then again, during your triumphant turn as Acasio in The Dragon Sings At Midnight you had to carry a rather large leading lady up the side of a scaffold while reciting an entire monolouge about porridge. So you manage.

Selvin and Vaddis, you fall in line behind the struggling bard as he moves to the double doors in the back of the administrative area. Area G4 everyone The doors open silently to reveal a lift.

It's an old wooden platform suspended by a thick chain set in the middle. A lever to one side must control it's movement. It can go upwards or down.

There are no guards here. The Doctor seemed to indicate you shoud go down. But from abpve you can hear voices. There must be more patients up there, becaue most of the voices are groans and whimpers as well as the odd scream. But you can hear more cm voices as well. All you can make out is "...make sure the south side infections run on schedule..." and "...she's been a most agreeable client..."

Up or down?

Unseen gears begin to grind and the lift lowers itself. The veiw of the warehouse is replaced by a sheer stone wall for about thirty feet before the space opens again.

You re looking into a large underground vault. It may hve been a cold storage for the warehouse at one time. The chamber is bare save for torches in sconces along the wall and two of the armored Grey Maidens. One stands on the other side of the chambr before a set of doors. Another stands not far from the lift entrance. Two other doors, one to the north and one to the south, are also visible.

The Maiden closest to the lift entrance looks at you and then at Izzick's 'body'. She gestures at a spot on the floor before the lift door, indicating he should be placed there, but says nothing.

Map should be uploaded. Red dots are the maidens. Thanks.

Re: Hospice of the Blessed Maiden

Let's move things along.

Selvin-your invisibility has about a minute and a half to go. Vaddis, you have about four minutes left.

The door in the south opens and one of the Plague Doctors steps out. He pauses, looking at the 'corpse'. "Ah..." his voice says, almost a droning sort of buzz. "...good. I needed some brain tissue. Bring him in here. We can bleed him and cut off his head," he motions at the door he just came through. Beyond you can see a smaller room. The room reeks of blood even from a distance. You can see a large grate in the floor, probably so various fluids can be drained into the sewers of the city. In short, the room resembles a butcher's counter. You can see a couple of other Doctor's at work on a corpse, cutting it into pieces.

My goodness how many of these Maidens are there?”  Tarrov subvocalizes as he moves to lay Izzick’s body in the standard spot.  “I’m going to try and convince them to help us, but it might not work.  So be on your guard, because this could get very ugly very quickly.

Hey there,” Tarrov says, standing up and turning to the closest maiden.  “I was told that I needed to deliver this one special, directly to Rolth.”  Tarrov shrugged.  “They said he’d know why, and I’d rather not be the one to disappoint him.”  He made a show of stretching his shoulders.  “Weird, right?  But I don’t ask questions.  Which way should I go?

Tarrov, I agree your post and mine aren't exclusive. The Doctor came out just after your bluff.

The Maiden remains standing still a moment, looking between Tarrov  and this new Doctor. She finally strides forward and grabs Izzick by the collar. "I'll take him," she says in a high pitched but burly voice and begins dragging him towards the butcher's room.

Then she stops and look down. "He still breathes I think..."

The Doctor shakes his head and pulls a scalpel from his pocket. "That will just make his tissue fresher."

The Maiden shrugs and pulls the half orc towards the door in the south. The other Maiden standing before the far doors looks at Tarrov. "Was there something else?"

The dim, sickly glow of evil's aura washes over the room as you look around Vaddis. Each of the people you see seem to crackle in diseased colors of varying hues, like the filmy sheen of the thin skn between sections of a dragnfly's wings. The maidens crackle in an unhealthy pink and yellow, like the skin of a cholera baby. The doctors, save Tarrov, are drenched in tones of dried blood black and vomit green. The chamber itself is awash in agony reds and graveyard browns.

And the smell...

This is, without any doubt, the most evil spot you have yet seen in your soon to be over young life.

Izzy...she's got you by the scruff of the neck. I'm taking 'the maiden' to mean the one who's carrying you and not the one over by the other doors.

And she's woozy because of the whole Suggestion/countermanded by the Doc thing. I mean she's right there! And she's not expecting it.  Normally you'd miss...but sorry to all the Paizo rules lawyers. Your beam's a hit. Sometimes common sense has to override die rolls.

The Maiden carrying Izzick suddenly wobbles as the flash of magic strikes her leg. She stumbles back a step. The Doctor whistles loudly. Three more Doctors are coming out of that far room. The Maiden by the double doors is starting to turn. Apparently she means to open the double doors and perhaps shout a warning.

Vaddis and Selvin, act now. I'm giving ya'll an action.

There's no point Tarrov. When Vaddis and Selvin attack the same target, it's like feeding pork into a grinder. You just get sausage.

The Maiden at the door has time to say, "Well hell..." before that's where she goes. Vaddis and Selvin/Zac can now look for new playmates.

Speaking of which, the four Doctors go all kinds of ninja by throwing an assortment of small, sharp, shiny bits of metal. Izzick, Vaddis, and Zac play pin cushions.

The remaining Maiden draws out a big sword. Izzick rolls sideways and manages to keep his head where it's located. The blade smashes the ground where he was, leaving fine spider webs of cracks. She is apparently not happy with the half orc.

Izzy and Vaddis take 3 dam. Zac gets 4 dam. Everyone give me your actions and rolls. I will get the map updated.

Oh and thanks for being understanding about the coming month. It is appreciated.

Vaddis  tears into one of the Doctors as Selvin  barrells into the remaining Maiden. She raises her shield arm but suddenly screams as the gauntlet on her sword arm glows an inferno red. She swings it atIzzick but is thrown off balance by the elf/eidolon barrahe.

One of the Doctors slides in the ooze Tarrov, but the two others neatly dodge it. Vey neatly. These aren't the usual kind of physicians. Not many can do cartwheels and rebound off the walls like monkeys.

Vaddis, as you take a chunk out of the Doctor you're engaged with, he swipes at your face with a small knife he's somehow managed to get into his hand. Tarrov, one of the doctors turned gymnastists let's fly with a couple of small sharp looking disks. One manages to land in your outer thigh.

Okay. Take your actions and make your rolls. One maiden and four docs up though one doc isn't doing too hot.

Vaddis, the doctor before you comes apart. As your blade rips open his chest you see part of his skin. He has some kind of red tattoo, a rather large and elaborate one, over his pecs.

Re: Hospice of the Blessed Maiden

"There is no glory for you here," Tarrov reasons, walking towards the doctor.  "What makes you think that you are dying in the service of glory?  Rather than in the service of, say, an insane megalomaniac who will soon face the sharp blade of justice?"

"You can die here, today.  But do you really want to spend your afterlife in the service of some devil of hell?  Surely you realize that you are not prominent enough to warrant a lofty position in their infernal halls?"  Tarrov shook his head, sadly.  "You've been sold a bill of goods, my friend.  I know it's hard to admit, but it's true."

The silver-haired bard gestured around the room.  "Look at what has become of your companions.  They have moved on to damnation.  But you?  You have a chance.  One final chance for redemption.  To turn your life from its current inexorable course towards eternal languishment in hellfire, the plaything for some powerful being of evil."

"This is your time.  To make the right choice.  To serve the greater good, rather than the selfish whims of those drunk on ill-gotten power."  He reaches a hand toward the doctor.  "Make that choice, my friend.  And save your eternal soul."

The Doctor bats at Vaddis'  sword, pushing it aside. "Rolth? Who cares? In his little lab, fondling his little monsters more than like. Through the double doors and bear left."

He looks at Tarrov's hand. "You're a fool. Killing for Acchekek is glory. And when I stand before him in his barrows, I can at least say I took you with me."

He lunges forward of a sudden and slashes at the bard's leg with a small thin blade. It jabs into Tarrov's ankle. Not deep. But it breaks the skin.

1 pt Tarrov. Give me a Fort save DC 12 please. Vaddis...I am assuming you are chopping? You do get the extra attack as he is basically passing you by.

He looked around. "So. Finish lookin' 'round, or go straight the way he said after Rolth? I suggest caution either way. He might'a been tryin' t'send us towards a trap at the last."

"Achekek," said Tarrov, a troubled look on his face.  "The Mantis God of Assassins.  Few serve him.  That we have an entire hospital worth of 'physicians' in his service is troubling.  Who knows how keep this goes?"  His expression grew bleak.  "Has Korvosa attracted the attention of the Red Mantis Assassins?"

He shook his head, as if clearing it.  "But the Mantis Assassins, at least, venerate rightful royalty.  They see monarchs as the divinely-appointed instruments of the gods."  The bard scratched his scalp in confusion.  "It would be strange for them to be working with the queen, given all the doubts surrounding her legitimacy."

"But they were also talking about 'feeding Urgathoa's maw.'  Urgathoa is the goddess of physical excess, disease, and undead.  Why she would be working with Achekek?  And if they are allied?  I can only imagine that means trouble.  The disease running its course through the city might be only the first step in some grand campaign."

"There is more to know here.  Much more.  And I bet Rolth knows quite a bit.  Sounds like Rolth and the Achekek-followers," he nudged a dead doctor with his foot, "weren't exactly the best of friends.  Maybe that means Urgathoa and Achekek aren't that close after all."

"Either way, we should clear and search this area to find out what its occupants know.  Especially Rolth."

He stalked up to the doors and headed inside to see if they could find Rolth.

Stepping over the greasy smears of your opponents, you head for the double doors the last Doctor indicated.. They are thick and painted with pictures of cavorting skeletons capering around the sight ofma massacre. The doors open easily with a push...

Beyond is a long rectangular hall. You freeze in a moment of shock.

Dozens of the living dead line the walls of this chamber, their rotting faces sneering and broken fingers clawing at each other. A layer of rotting bodies lines the floor, the shattered forms twitching in vain, bones and splintered appendages grasping hopelessly. Yet, rather than some massive, nightmare grave, this horror-show seems instead to be a stomach-churning attempt at art, as the mangled living dead lie trapped behind walls and beneath a floor of thick glass.

The undead are pinned behind the thick panes of glass on the floor and walls. I am uploading a new map. You would be crossing from G1 to G4.

The glass is thick. It appears to have been trod on recently. So that should not be a concern.

Also, the risk posed by the undead seems minimum. These corpses aren't...complete. Legs are missing on some. Others are cross sections of a body reanimated just for the purpose of watching it twitch you suppose. Overall, this display seems more style than substance. Perhaps it's meant to distract you or terrify you. Whatever the case, it seems to pose danger only to your sensibilities.

Re: Hospice of the Blessed Maiden

Oh Vaddy Baby...don't ever change...

Vaddis strides across the glass floor, heels thump thumping over the twitching and writhing half dead beneath his feet. He walks to the end of the bizzare hall and throws open the double doors...

The stinging scent of harsh chemicals chokes this high-ceilinged chamber. Three huge metal vats bubble here, each more than six feet tall. A sturdy series of catwalks ten feet off the ground stretches over and around the vats, allowing those above to attend whatever slurry produces the foul green-brown mist emanating from each gigantic vessel. Circling the upper portion of the room is an elaborate mosaic of white, black, and green stone that depicts a giant half-corpse woman in black veils dancing among fields of the dead, undead, and dying.

Along the catwalks you see six men, clad in stained ceremonial robes going about various tasks. One looks up, hearing the doors and says, rather loudly, "Hey! What tha hell man?!"

This causes the other five to look up. Three of them peal off, running for various doors...one each to the norht and south and one towards the back of the hall. Two grab small amulets that are pinned to their robes and begin chanting. Another grabs a long, thin pole out of one of the vats and hefts it, making sure the long line of foul greyish ooze that came along with it slides down the length of the pole.

Ya'll are coming in from G4 to G8. New map uplaoded. Dots are the positions of the priests. Let's dispense with init. Ya'll can have it.

Tarrov watched in stunned disbelief as Vaddis reached for the door.  "Vaddis, don't . . .," he said, but the deed was already done.  Apparently it was going to be the straightforward, hail-of-arrows approach.

The bard moved into the room and took in the situation.  It looked as if some of the room's occupants were about to flee.  That . . . or summon reinforcements.  Well, the less of that the better, he thought to himself.  He flung out a hand, uttering a brief word of arcane power to again summon a thin film of grease under the T-junction where one of the men was standing near the southern doors.

Re: Hospice of the Blessed Maiden

Vaddis,  it s a veritable cornucopia of perfidy and malevolence. Oddly the men, while certainly dastardly, are not as vie as the contents of the vats. In any case, the man you sink your sword into stops his chanting nd fumbles in his robes to pull out a long, sinister looking blade.

The man at the far end of the room makes it to the double doors and bangs on them before you can get there Selvin. You were delayed by a crossbow bolt and some kind of baneful magic You/Zac took 5 and 2 points in two attacks.  He truns and tries to swing a small scthye at you, but only manages to scream as you rip him apart.

"Ah man. Not cool!" screams another man as he stumbles to his knees in your oil slick Tarrov. He grabs at the catwalk's railing and is trying to use it to slide himself towards the door.

Then of course there's a FWOOSH. Well. More like a fwoosh. Maybe just a woosh. You maybe curse your magic Izzick, but luck seems to be on your side. Two of the men suddenly combust in such a way, it leads you to suspect they were probably soaking in lamp oil moments before you walked through the doorway. Seriously. They are just burning all over the place.   None of them saved. Two of them came close to critically fumbling their saves..

Selvin...thanks for the idea. Roll your save vs the fireball. As for the priests remaining, not a single one did any damage other than the attacks on Selvin and Zac. Ya'lls move.

The silvery bard moves to unfurl his trusty whip...and lands flat on his face. A slick of a greasy substance has appeared under your feet Tarrov. The goo is familar, though not your own brew. Someone stole your schtick.

Behind you, coming in through the door you entered are three men. To appear much like the others on the catwalk. The third...oh he just screams necromancer. He wears dirty, greasy black leather aprons in which are tucked all kinds of diabolical looking devices, as well as the odd halfling hand and elven ear. His face is covered in pasty, cadavear colored skin bu his eyes, as disgusting a shae of yellow as they are, very much have the spark of life. A spiteful, sickening sort of life. His whole demeanor just screams Hi. My name is Rolth.

Rolth points a boney hand towards Selvin/Zac and says in a suprisingly deep voice, "Gerhok. That one. Whatever it is. Suppression fire."

One of the men who came in with him raises a wand and points it towrds the elf-eilidon. A volley of small bluish orbs of energy streak out and smash into the Summoner just as he shreds the priest he was attacking.

"Go back and alert anyone you find," Rolth says to the other man, eyeing Izzick and then Vaddis, who has destroyed his opponent. "Well. At least anyone they've left alive. We have to stop them here. Before they disrupt My Lovely..."

Tarrov begins to sing as he tries to pick himself up. Izzick's friend materializes. The lackey with the wand manages one more barrage which strikes before Selvin lays Zac's various appendages across the man's chest and throat, ending his threat.

Your blade strikes Vaddis, and though you draw blood it is like stabbing into an oak. Blue energy sparks and seethes under the point of contact, the reason for the added resistance obviously. Rolth has ensorcelled himself.

Rolth takes a step back, ignoring his bleeding shoulder and lifts a hand, wavng it and tossing a few drops of water and some dust into the air. He says something in some language. And the temperature drops. Of a sudden, the air is filled with stinging bits of hail and ice of a sudden. They are starting to move.

You can see over Rolth's shoulder that the other lackey who came with him has run across the glass-over-undead room and headed for one of the doors in the north. He is probably going to get reinforcements. There are two other lackeys in the room from before you know. But what they are doing you can't say. They are behind you on ths scaffolds still. Though they were both on fire until recently. So really. What could they possibly do now? Right?

Okay. The wand priest is dead. In the room...currently...are Rolth who is blocking the door and two other priests. Another priest is running into the last room, going for reinforcements. Updated the map. Yellow is Rolth. Brownish spots are priests.

Rolth has cast Ice Storm. It is materializing right now. You do get actions before it hits.

Tarrov did his Inspire bit. Please make sure to include the bonus in your rolls.

Thanks.

Rolth catches flame and the buffering wind blows the smell of burning necromancer right into everyone's face. Ugh. And the aftertaste...

Reinforcement-Fetching Lackey is on the floor, a disembodied dog chewing at his arm. But the door he opened is opening wider. And you can hear shouts coming from inside it.

You have Plague Doctors and lackeys pouring out from the room behind you. And a herd of zombies coming down the catwalks at you.

But at least you have your health...well. Never mind.

CURRENT ROUND

Selvin felt Zac take more damage than he was capable of, so Selvin took some of the damage himself, grunting with the pain of it. He then flew farther back in the room to try and get out of the area of the ice storm and away from the coming zombies....at least for a moment.

He then cast a spell to heal his ally a bit.

OOC: Sacrificing hit points to keep Zac around (Selvin takes 15 damage).

Flying back to where he got fireballed by Izzick almost to get out of the ice storm (I think that will get him out of the area of effect). If not, I'll revise.

Casting Lesser Eidolon Rejuvenate after movement.

22:29, Today: Selvin Larst rolled 11 using 1d10+6. Rejuvenate Eidolon Lesser.

Tarrov stepped in front of the doctors and priests, snapping his whip with an expertise honed over scores of performances in Korvosa's finest theater.  "Take to your heels, dogs," he snarled.  "We've killed your master, and we've killed your colleagues, and we'll kill you too.  Your dark gods cannot protect you.  Flee now, if you have any sense of self-preservation.  If not?"

He paused.

"Die."  The performer's whip cracked to emphasize the word, as if the gates of hell were opening to eagerly receive its newest residents.

The priests, blind as they are, fall fairly easily. The doctor seems to be made of sterner stuff as he takes Izzick's blast and tries to crouch into a defensive position. He's blind though. So the effort makes him resemble more a sitting duck than a crouching tiger.

However there is good news. The missing doctor does not remain missing. As Tarrov can attest, for it seems the good doctor has somehow appeared behind him. He sinks a long sharp blade into the bard's side. The doctor barks, "You're it!" and begins to giggle as he twists the knife...

Tarrov...8 points damage.

Only one blind doctor, the blinkng doctor, and one priest left standing.

You manage to gather a handful of coins. Blinky has a rather intricate ring on one finger. Black metal with an intricate inlay of silver.

The vats hold nothing but gallons of a disgusting goo. You notice racks where the goo has been spread, allowing it to dry to an ashy colored powder. For some reason it reminds you of the inside of those coffers.

Re: Hospice of the Blessed Maiden

New map uploaded to group 0. Selvin will be looking into G13. Everyone else is in G8.

Fire appears to be the only solution readily available Vaddis. Though destroying it may hamper efforts to find a cure.

But let's not worry about that now.

The doors fly open easily Selvin. You are staring into a large chamber. Everything in here seems to be bathed with a kind of sickly, greenish glow. Around the perimeter of the room are work tables and benchs, each seeming to overflow with paper, odd medical instruments, alchemical equipment, and nasty smelling lit candles. But the source of the light comes from the center of the room.

Four sealed glass columns, each taller than Zac, stand in the center. Each is filled with a greenish tinged fluid. In each column stands...something. Beings you guess. They seem part man, part angel, part horse. Three of the the odd beings remain still, while from the fourth you can see movement. It is pressing it's odd horse skull face against the glass and staring at you. Slowly it raises a long talon like finger and taps the glass from the inside.

There are two priests as well. One is sitting on the floor, staring up at you. You knocked him over when you kicked open the door. The other priest is standing beside the glass tube, holding a hammer. Hammer Priest looks at you with a puzzled expression. "Friend or foe? Really? Ya just came in and slaughtered most of me mates. Tch. Friend or foe this."

And he raises the hammer and brings it down on the glass tube. The hammer makes a small hole in the tube, but in a moment the hole widens as the bird-horse-man thing slams an arm through it. It grabs Hammer Priest by the throat.

Hammer Priest manages to say "I wallow in the pits of my Lady of Filth. She carresses me with lepers-"

Whatever else she does for him gets lost as his head comes off hos shoulders and flops to the ground.

The priest who was seated on the floor looks at his dead comrade, blinks, and looks up at you Selvin. "Me? I'm all about Team You Guys. Right here for ya buddy!"

Bwah ha ha ha

The -angel-horse-man thing dives straight into the rush of Izzick's rays of flame. The blasts leave black soot marks on it's skin, but it continues to rush forward.

Selvin pounces and strikes. But the creature pivots and steps aside once, twice, and then a third time. Vaddis' first swing is close. It seems to catch the thing off guard, and though it sidesteps it, it does so by stepping right in the way of Selvin. The thrust of Zac's last attack pushes the thing into Vaddis' range and the paladin strikes a solid blow.

The thing flips backwards and lands on it's feet. Hooves. Whatever. It opens it's skull-beak and leans forward....

From inside it a great wave of flies erupts out, like a swollen river bursting through a levee of cheap sandbags. Each fly seems as big as the end of your thumb and swells with some kind of noxious pus that seeps out from every one of it's imaginable crevices....

Is there any part of this place that is not disgusting?

The save on Ray of Enfeeblement is for half, so it's one of those quasi saves.

Mr Dead Ed makes a choked BAH KWaaaakkk sound as the thin beam from Izzick's  hand strikes him. Then it makes an umph noise as the Twin Furies Vaddis and Selvin smack him around like the pimps they are.

He does give as good as he gets though. Zac/Selvin takes a sideways blow but he manages to back slash Vaddis fairly solidly. His claws are weaker though then you might expect. They only feel like a warhammer as opposed to a balista.

He jumps backwards slightly and shakes his skull head. He then surges forward...

The fat thick flies shudder and turn to fat thick drops of nauseating goo that splatter on the floor with a sound that can only be described as tiny babies being dropped from the roof onto the street.

The smell lingers. As does the victory.

It appears the priest made tracks during your fight. So much for Team Us.

A second search turns up little of immediate use. The priests have a few coins on them. And there are some substances that may be toxic. But to what extent or use you aren't sure. There are notes, and they could be useful, but it would take some time to piece them together.

Sorry. Not much in this room. There are some vials of what may be acid. Three vials of one use each. How strong an acid you don't know.

Going forward?

Re: Hospice of the Blessed Maiden

The long hall opens into a circular chamber rising into a high dome. Seven basins jut from the walls, ensconced within evenly spaced alcoves that circle the room. Each is filled to the brim with a unique liquid corruption—blood, bile, milk, or other unidentifiable fluid. Each fills the air with its own distinct reek, creating a noxious, eye-watering bouquet. Upon the floor around each basin lie several small, empty metal boxes, each carved with images of skulls. At the room’s center, rising from a wide pool of crystalline water, rises a golden statue of a sight both erotic and horrifying. The statue is that of a beautiful nude woman, human above the waist, but below this the figure is nothing more than a skeleton.

Scattered about the room are several of those coffers ypu suspect were used to house the coins thay carried the plague to Korvosa. Some are open, revealing the bodies of dead rats or severed human fingers. Others are closed, waiting to be opened and unveil their toy surprises to the world.

Standing at the base of the large fountain is a woman. She is beautiful. Pale skin with long, luxurious black hair tied in a knot behind her head. But she is also, without a doubt, evil. There can be no doubt about it. Even at a glance it is obvious. She wears black leather armor cut so as to leave no doubt about where her various curves are. Her nails and full lips are painted the color of fresh blood. Small skull motifs are fitted about her costume to leave no doubt she is into death. And she holds a large war scythe by the haft, resting the pointy tip of one of her knee high steel tipped boots on the large blade at the end of the shaft. She is such the picture of evil, the only way she could possibly prove herself more evil is if she were to begin some kind of menacing villanous monolouges the villans in plays often make at about this time.

She opens her mouth.

" And so you have found your way to me, hopeful heroes. Know that you stand before the architect of your city’s death. You call this sending blood veil, yet I know it as the gentle kiss of the Pallid Princess. Your reward shall be great—choose of the seven scourges to become one with the goddess. Those who drink, I shall only cripple, leaving you alive to enjoy her as she quickens inside your flesh. Those who abstain are fools, not fit to house the divine gift. You may prostrate yourselves at my feet and I shall make your end all the more swift for it. Swifter, in any event, than this delightful end your lovely queen has enjoined me to create! "

Wow. She is evil.

She growls at the two front line fighters, sneers at Tarrov as he busts a fresh rhyme, and glances at the swirling ball of energy in front of Izzick that is becoming wolf shaped. She is muttering something as she does so and then jumps straight up into the air....and stays there. She pushes up with her heels, forcing herself higher. She ducks low and manages to avoid both the bolts from Vaddis' crossbow and the sizzling beams from Izzick.

Unfortunately, this leaves her open for a slam dunk from Selvin. The force of the two attacks actually knocks her down. She slams into the liquid gathering at the feet of the bizzare statue.

She does not rise.

Re: Hospice of the Blessed Maiden

The water in the main fountain is murky Izzick. But ypu can see the dead priestess, her blood pouring out and clouding the water further.

As you start to reach down, you get a chill in your spine. Just a premonition of sorts. You glance upwards.

The creepy statue is looking down at you. Was it's face looking downwards before? You can't recall. But what grabs your attention is the smile on it's face. The smile is a large one. Not a malicious smirk, but an actual honest...almost loving...smile. Considering the statue depicts the goddess of filth and disease, and that it is of a naked woma who is a skipeleton from the waist down, it is easy to say the smile seems out of place.

You follow the eyes of the statue. It is not looking at you, but at her. The woman in the water. You look down.

The priestess has opened her eyes. But there are no orbs inside the sockets. Instead there is a glow. Diffused by the water, but still visible none the less. The skin around her eyes is flaking off like old paint on the wall of an old cottage by the sea. The skin flakes and disintergrates, revealing not muscle and sinew, but a second skin that glows as well. The priestess is raising her hand. As she does so the nails fall of and the palm splits open, revealing more glowing surface underneath.

It seems you are witnessing the birth of a fallen angel.

The rest of you aren't finding anything.

Izzick, she is still under the water at this point and still transforming.

Suddenly, the priestess rises from the water, visible to all.

She is looking a lot different. Her skin and clothes are falling away, turning into ash in the air. Beneath she is aglow. Literally. Large butterfly like wings are unfolding from her back.

She looks like an angel. Sort of. There's something off about the whole effect though. The light she gives off is slightly painful to look at. Her fingers come to in end in sharp points now. And she still has that same look on her face as when you first came into the room. A look of cool arrogance mixed with pure contempt.

And the air in the room goes stale.

Vaddis, the evil level all around just took a sharp spike upwards.

She makes a motion. The air seems to constrict around Selvin/Zac...

Like a well oiled machine, you all move in fluid concert. Selvin and Vaddis strike in perfect point-counterpoint while Izzick's ray neatly strikes her from behind. Tarrov finishes his recitation and steps back to ready himself.

Gloworm gives some ground under the various assaults. Her off kilter glowing face makes a grimace of distaste. She reaches out and slaps at the two tanks, striking one than the other. Her blows carry an impact, though perhaps not as powerful as one would perhaps expect.

Re: Hospice of the Blessed Maiden

Selvin let out a small grunt as he was swatted off a bit. He attacked again but the Maidens were bobbing unexpectedly due to the grease he thought, and so he missed most of his attacks.

Hit AC 19 once for 12 damage. Sad panda.

12:46, Today: Selvin Larst rolled 16,18,12,19 using d20+10,d20+10,d20+10,d20+10. Full power attack against the two maidens near him (trying to finish off the wounded one first).
12:47, Today: Selvin Larst rolled 11,1 using d6+9,d6. Damage.

There is a resounding ker-thunk as Vaddis blade cleaves into the maiden. She counters with a decent cut, though it is obvious her gauntet situation is giving her trouble.

There is a cry under Zac's claw Selvin. The maiden falls backwards and does not stir.

The greasy one slips around in the pool again.

The punctuated, sizzling, heated maiden falls back into the puddle of oil. Ker-splat.

Selvin strikes down on the oily maiden. She makes a soft uph sound and tries to pull a dagger from her belt.

Hey Selvin. Are you stepping into the grease puddle to hit her?

Okay.Let's get everyone on the same page...

Vaddis, Selvin, Izzick, and Tarrov...

You cross the room with the undead under glass, heading back to the entry. There you see the lift shaft. The platform has lowered to this level. Crumpled on top of it are two men. One of the masked doctors and the other...Davalus. The physician the Queen brought in to oversee the 'response' to the plague. Both lay dead on the platform. They must have fallen down the shaft from the level above.

As you glance upwards, you see someone abpve looking down at you...

Chandanar...

You make it to the edge of the lift shaft and look down. Davalus and one of the two doctors lay below, both dead from the fall. There are four others down there below, looking up at you. A warrior. A half orc. A handsome man. And an elf who has been eatten bu some kind of see through, glowing tiger bird thing.

You all look at each other.

Chandanar curses under his breath as he realizes that the second doctor has escaped his notice.
" Are you with the Queen's man Davalus? ", he shouts down to the strange quartett below, still suspicious about the vile plans of Davalus.
Then again, these might be the people Davalus had been intent to thwart.
Very much aware that the escapee mjght still hide and attack him at any time, Chandanar keeps up his guard.

"I am Chandanar Jedekiah of the Church of Iomedae. Who are you? And how did you get down there? Did you get down there via this lift? There are bad guys up here, too. I fought them, but some may have fled. They tried to sabotage the lift, supposedly to keep you stranded down there.", he shouts back

Izzick hoped that Vaddis' credentials had earned them another ally, but he himself refrained from introducing himself (at least just yet). The expelled member of the Academe would rather that kind of infamy be reserved for those he knew rather than introductions in the midst of an escape. Tarrov shielded his eyes as he looked up towards the sudden brightness and the alleged Iomedean at the top of the lift.  He glanced towards the paladin.  "Vaddis, what sense do you get?"  The bard said in a lowered tone of voice.  "Is he really a worshipper of your goddess?"  The silver-haired man looked back up towards the top of the lift, grinning slightly.  "If he isn't, he sure picked the wrong deity to faux follow."

"Yes, getting us out of this place would be great."  Tarrov figured that if this person meant them harm, he probably would have just sent a kill squad of Grey Maidens after them rather than exposing himself.  But who knew?  "Lift or rope."  He parroted the paladin.  "Your choice.  But quicker is better."

Once everybody was up with him, the cleric tells them of how he had found the hospital, the doctors killing the patients, Davalus mentioning some papers and grey maidens obviously involved in the whole plot, too.
If the group is obviously in bad health state, Chandanar channels the divine power to heal their wounds.

Re: Hospice of the Blessed Maiden

You all watch the Hospice burn from across the street. The tide of evil never materialized. But then again, with smoke from the fire upstairs starting to fill the shaft, there were other matters occupying your attention.

You all piled out the front door, dragging the body of Davalus. The roof came dwn soon after.

The Guard showed up rather quickly. A few spell tossers to handle the blaze were sent for. The officer in charge seems to recognize you. He asks if you have injured and then motions for you to follow him towards an alley way.

He seems nervous.

He looks around quickly and then speaks.

"I am glad to see you are all well. But I bear bad news. Did you hear what happened this morning?  " Whatever he's referring to must have happened rather recently. Even Chandanar has heard of no recent news to explain the man's panic. The officer wipes his mouth. "Odic Casaban, head of the Marines, tried to kill the Queen."

Come to think of it, none of you have seen the hippogriffs the Marines use as transport in the air today. "It was at a ceremony. Word is the Queen was planning to decommision both the Marines and us on the Guard. Commander Odic tried to drove a sword into the Queen's throat. He was screaming she was a devil. He...well. You know what we all suspect, eh? She is not just some gold digger who married well. I wasn't there. But the rumors are he truck her. Right on point. And...and she didn't die. She just pulled it outta her neck and tossed it aside. Her guards...the Maidens...tore Odic to pieces. But now it's all gone ta hell. The Maidens arrested Marshall Cressidia an hour ago."

Some of you, Izzick, Tarrov, Selvin, and Vaddis, may have mixed feelings about that. Your relationship with her has been rocky. But would she be involved in a plot to kill the Queen? Or is this just the Queen purging the ranks of those who might oppose her? Either way, she was your employer on occasion. And the Queen knows it.

The Officer scans the crowd that is assembling to watch the fire. "They are already rounding up Odic's and Commander Cressidia's officers. They'll probably come for me to. But I know that you lot have been fighting the good fight. You deserve a heads up.

"The Maidens have taken control of the city gates and the docks. And I hear they've surronded the Bank and other temples. I would guess they got your names on a list. I'm sure they got mine. So trying to escape that way or to reach help is suicice. But there's a chance. Head north. To Old Korvosa. Apparently the riots there have left the place chaotic. The Queen has just sealed off the bridges on this side. She isn't in control on the other side of the bridge. I don't know if anyone is. But if there's a way outta the city, you might find it there.
"

Old Korvosa, the island to the north of the city, has long been at odds with the Palace. It is said old noble families of some power are the real rulers there. And Vencarlo has his fencing school there. The man who helped you explore the shipwreck in the river and sneak the girl falsely accused of killing the king out of the city certainly seems to have connections.

The officer steps back. "I need to get this fire put...my last duty...then I'm getting my family and going into hiding. You men do as you see best. But whatever you do watch your backs. " He scowls and shakes his head. "I've lived in Korvosa my whole life. I grew up here. My father and his father are buried here. It's my home. I wish there was a way to save it.  " He rubs his mouth. " Damn the King for marrying that bitch. Good luck to you. "
